I came here yesterday. I am a old guy, broken down from a great life of being a musician, motorcycle wrecks, race car wrecks, skiing disasters, playing Army for many years and basically burned the candle at five ends. Add the tum tum, and you would think this is the last place I would end up. The different orthopedic doctors and Physical Therapists all basically said go to something like this and see what makes you hurt :-( . I called and talked to the business and it turns out that they have many different types of classes, including rehab and recovery. They would make adjustments for me if needed. The business was spotless and organized to a T. Then came the class. The instructor, Jennifer, was quite charming as was the staff. The attendees were all ages, shapes, sizes, and I was not the only man there. Jennifer said she could adjust the instruction if needed due to all my damage and I said no way, go full blast and if I had problems I would adjust myself. So, full of confidence, I started immediately with the class which was a "grace", or something like that, for newbies. Jennifer was enthusiastic, and kept the tempo going. I had some problems at first following the instructions as I was new to this, but with the mirrors and her assistants, I started getting the idea. Yeah! I heard "shake it off and rest" but I could never see where "rest" was in the picture. I realized that if I totally stopped I would never be able to start up again, so I did the best I could. Then I learned to hate the words "bar and barre". When you are told to grab or lean on the bar, you are really going to get it. All in all, it was wonderful. Jennifer or one of her assistants would come and help with advice, and there was only 2 moves I could not do. When we were finally finished, my muscles were shaking so bad from lack of use in the past few years, I asked my wife to drive home, much to her glee. Fast forward 1 day and I am worn out and sore, but in a good way. I am definitely more flexible, I don't have pain where I used to have pain, so this event probably saved me a lot of money to doctors and therapists as I know now where to target and to what extent I can handle and still live. read more

Really nice studio! I attended via Classpass, and it was a fun yet challenging workout. The studio is clean, bright and welcoming, and the staff was really friendly. The instructor greeted me by name and asked if I had any injuries or needed any modifications, then walked me over to the equipment and explained that I needed two sets of free weights to add to the other set up equipment (a mat, a lower back mat, ball and resistance band). It was all women in the class, and I can't be sure but i get the feeling it's like 90%+ female most of the time. There's also a spin studio in the space. For barre devotees, I think it's a solid choice and very conveniently located. Also there's ample parking out front and in the parking garage just underneath. All in all, it was a good midday workout. read more

I went to Dancers Shape for years (until moving out of Austin) and loved it, so much so that I go back every time I'm in Austin. The instructors are knowledgeable and incredibly nice, and the classes are challenging and energetic. After starting barre as a way to strengthen the helper muscles around my knee (which I need, with two torn menisci!), I've felt minimal knee pain ever since. I credit my DS workouts and the instructors, who are corrective but never intrusive. Since moving away from Austin, I've tried in vain to find a comparable barre workout and experience, but I've failed miserably. DS is the gold standard for barre! read more

Today was my first visit to Dancer's Shape. A friend invited me and I wasn't sure what to expect but was down for some post holiday exercise. Walking into the studio you feel like you're in a trendy little boutique. Cute furniture, modern furnishings. The receptionist immediately greeted my friend and I and gave us a quick tour around. I felt very comfortable there for it being my first time. The instructor, Emily, met with us before class to explain what we were in for and reassure us that it was ok to work out within our own limits and take breaks as needed. We did the Shape class which encompasses strength training and toning. You might think a class loosely based on ballet sounds kind of like an easy work out, but it was definitely not! I work out at least a few times a week and this class really put me in my place. My arms were aching 5 minutes in and my butt was burning pretty much the whole time. I can't see how you wouldn't get in shape if you do this class regularly! There's a special right now where you get 2 classes for $22 as a new client and it was totally worth it. I have felt healthy and energized all day. It's nice to work out in such a clean and pretty environment. I really hope to make this a regular part of my week. read more

Dancers Shape is a great little studio. I've never taken a barre class anywhere else so I don't have much to compare it to, but I have enjoyed each class I've taken here. The studio itself is very clean and they provide you with everything you need: mats, towels, and any other equipment, plus wipes to clean everything off after each class. There are small hooks to hang your bags on and individual small baskets to stash your stuff. There is also plenty of parking available in the AMLI garage. There are a good variety of classes for all levels, and each seems very flexible in terms of accommodating existing injuries/pregnancy. Their beginning barre class (Graceful) is a great intro and you'll still get a good workout from it. Other than that I've only tried Shape (barre) and Core (mat pilates), and each of them burn so good. The studios are also well ventilated and don't get too warm. All the instructors I've taken classes with so far are very well trained and have great energy. Signing up for classes is easily done online, in person, or over the phone. You can also show up without having signed up beforehand and it's not a problem as long as the class isn't full. Loving it so far! I'd definitely come back on a regular basis if I have the budget for it. read more

I found this place through Class Pass, and I absolutely loved it! Everyone is so friendly here. They gave my friend and I a little thank you note and giftcard for coming, which I thought was so personal and cute. The class was fantastic. We did their Spin and Zen class, so it's half spin and then half restorative yoga. It was a great class. I was sore the next day because the spin part was so hard. I loved the yoga part- they gave lavender towels during the yoga part, which was great. The teacher helped us adjust the bikes and everything before the class; she was fantastic! Very upbeat, very encouraging. She really paid attention to everyone in the class. The studio is really cute and clean. I loved the atmosphere of it. Heads up: if you're taking their spin, you need the clip on shoes. You can rent them for $2 there or if you have some bring those. read more

As someone who hates working out, it's rare for me to find something that keeps me interested for more than a few weeks. I've been going for about 3 months now and I'm still LOVING Dancers Shape! It's a tough workout but I feel stronger after each class. There were about two weeks when I wasn't able to go last month and my body was actually missing the classes. I think my inner ballerina from when I was 6 is coming out haha. The instructors are great and provide several modifications throughout the barre class depending on your level. The classes are usually small so it feels like you are getting personal instruction. The music keeps you going and no two classes have ever been the same. I would highly recommend Dancers Shape for beginners and experts! Also, try the glutes and groove class and dance your heart out! read more

This studio has been a God-send. I've been trying to find the perfect routine that fits my body's needs as I have a complicated injury history. This really is perfect for all skill levels. The instructors are attentive and provide modifications to down or upgrade anything you're doing. Bonus that they all have different styles of teaching and routine so you never get bored. The studio is small enough that they know you when you walk in and, in my opinion, can give you more personal feedback because of this relating to progress or areas you need help. There's a lot of lower body work but also a lot of core, without neglecting the upper body; so it's a good balance (which, by the way, will ALSO improve ). Give them a shot! I have had enough of the belly rolls of fat. The last few months I have done zero exercising but plenty of eating and drinking and it is starting to really take it's toll on my body. I grew up a skinny little thing that was very athletic and have had the luxury of having a fantastic metabolism. However, as the years pass not only do I curse getting older but my metabolism seems to be slipping away. I saw my hips pop out a bit, my boobs get a little bigger (slight bonus to gaining weight) and then I started to notice MUFFIN TOP. I draw the mother fucking line at MUFFIN TOP. As I was crying into my non-fat vanilla latte over my ever expanding body, I received an e-mail from Austin Tidbits (http://austin.gotidbits.com/) with a deal for Dancers Shape. I read through the e-mail, checked out Dancers Shape and thought to myself...."Self, this is what is going to jump start your workout routine". The workout classes at Dancers Shape combines ballet, yoga, Pilates and circuit training to give you the best workout possible. The owner, Jennifer McCamish, went to school at UT and then went on to be a Radio City Rockette. You know, those ladies that have uber sculpted legs that never end,,, those Rockettes. My class on Wednesday kicked my ass. KICKED. MY. ASS. First off I was greeted by Jennifer who was very pleasant and took the time to show me around and explain the workout and what to expect. Since I was the only person in the class that morning, I had the added benefit of Jennifer correcting my posture during the workout, which helped me work my muscles correctly. Sure it hurt like hell once I was in the right position, but I knew that burn was helping me lose the fat and gain the muscle. During my other classes I had Toussaint lead the class and she was just as helpful correcting any bad posture/body positions during class. They are even sweet enough to say "Do as much as you can, push yourself but take a break if you need it". I'm pretty sure they were talking to me as the sweat rolled off and my body was shaking due to the lack of exercising over the last year. :) I have been to 3 classes so far and am excited about the potential results. They provide everything that you need for the class (mats, weights, ab thing, etc). The smiles and good vibes make the pain tolerable. Results are divine. Last November I got a postcard advertising the opening of a new workout center. Woman-owned, focused on barre-style circuit training and close to my home. I have no dance background. That hasn't been an issue. Although I am laughably uncoordinated. I've been taking their Shape, Graceful and Core classes 2-3 days a week. Here are the changes I've experienced: --visible tricep muscles and deltoids _a butt. I'm a flat-assed Pollock. Who knew that the right, targeted exercises could create a butt out of such sheer flatness? --a super strong core. Too many hours at the computer left me round shouldered. I'm now walking and sitting straighter. My mom would be proud. DS uses a combination of curcuit trainging with barre techniques. Great for getting firmed up. The teachers all clearly love their jobs and are very personnable. Classes are fun and challenging. And you see results FAST. read more

Dancers Shape is a shining five stars. I first heard of Dancers Shape from a couple of trusty Yelpers (both the awesome Anna B. and Dana B.) then had the opportunity to try out a class thanks to Kelly's CMFE at Dancers Shape. I was getting bored with my current workout routine and loved the Shape class at the CMFE so decided to purchase the introductory discount offer. I just finished my first month and am completely hooked. I can tell a difference in muscle tone after attending my first 8 classes. DS offers five types of classes: Shape (the most popular of the classes), Graceful, Core, Sport and Yoga. Out of the five class types I have tried three: Shape, Graceful and Core. All are challenging yet designed for all levels of fitness. Graceful is a slightly slower paced class than Shape and the Core class is similar in fashion to pilates. Most, if not all the instructors, are trained in dance. But don't worry, you can be a klutz like me and still make it through class without embarrassing yourself. The owner Jennifer and all of the other instructors are friendly and helpful throughout the class. They really emphasize proper technique to get the most out of your workout while doing it safely. DS has such a positive atmosphere that I actually look forward to working out. read more

Girl walks into a Barre.... No, this is no joke folks. There is Nuh. Thing. funny about this workout. That was evidenced by the looks I exchanged with my neighbor on the left, you know, the "What the fuck have we gotten ourselves into???" looks, and the angry looks from my neighbor on the right directed at Jennifer our instructor that said, "You can count to eight faster than that woman! My ass is on fire!!" I guess the whole thing would have been funny as an observer, watching me attempting to extend my right leg out behind me with a ball clenched in my knee joint, raising it and lowering all the while my left, "stabilizing" leg is shaking like an 8 on the Richter scale. I shoulda asked Jennifer for the safe word before starting, but it probably woulda been some Russian ballet composer's name that I would have fumbled anyway. I went into this thinking I would be holding lightly onto the bar, whilst raising up and down on my toes, swooping my arm gracefully into the air and dreaming of dancing with/sleeping with Mikhail Baryshnikov. Uh. No. This was holding on to the barre as if your life depended on it, while doing deep squats on your tippy toes. I seriously have waaaay more respect for sugar plum fairies now. My only problem with the class was trying to keep up and not feeling completely confident that I was doing every exercise right. It was very fast paced and I was on the wall with no mirror, so I was continuously having to look over my shoulder to see what I was supposed to be doing. I'm sure after taking a few classes, I would get the swing of it tho. When I go back, I might start with the Graceful class which is slower paced to better understand everything and then move back into the Shape class (the Sport one which includes cardio is a little intimidating for me too). I would take this class again after a weekend of being really bad....you know, as a mea culpa to karma and just let Jennifer punish me. Judging by my sore points today, this class will make your back and quads and shoulders stronger, your abs tighter and your ass rockin hard! It. hurts. to. breathe. Wish I could stop that for a little while, get some relief. read more

Burn, baby, burn ... the disco inferno I am describing here is the feeling that my muscles and I have when we go to Dancer's Shape, a place where they make you do things that most normal people would never, ever choose to do on their own. Let me give you a few examples: 1. standing on your tiptoes for extended periods of time while doing squats (!!!) 2. lifting 3 pound weights until they start to feel like 30 pounds. 3. using tiny, little medicine balls to exercise your thighs in ways that could be misconstrued as sexually explicit Who knew that 3 pounds of weight could be so challenging? Apparently, the ladies at Dancer's Shape. And that's why I keep going back for more. They studio is new, clean, and comfortable. The air condition is cool. The music is good. And, there is no way in hell I would ever do these exercises on my own. Not to mention that if you keep going back, it starts to get a little bit easier. What I have to say to Dancer's Shape is this: please, sir, may I have some more? read more

My abs haven't looked this great since college! In one short month, Dancers Shape has toned and defined my mid-section more effectively and quickly than anything I've ever tried - pilates, yoga, ab fitness dvds, ab target toning classes, etc. In fact, I could feel that oh-so-good pain, the kind you have after a great workout, throughout my core muscles after my first class and started seeing results after the first week. I've been intrigued by ballet barre classes, but never signed up because (1) I thought my pilates and yoga classes covered the same type of exercises, (2) I didn't think I'd get a good workout and (3) I'm not a dancer - unless you count booty shakin at a club. After taking weeks off from my normal workout routine, I needed something fresh and new to motivate me. I signed up for the introductory one month unlimited package with Dancers Shape after reading the glowing reviews on Yelp, and attended classes about 3 times a week. The true test for me comes when the affordable intro period expires... Do I love the classes enough to continue without a discount? In this case, YES! What I love most about Dancers Shape are the fantastic instructors. Each instructor is well trained, engaging, friendly and incredibly helpful. They really try to accommodate everyone by offering modified moves, provide individual attention and correct your form so each person gets the best workout possible. You don't need a dance background to take Dancers Shape classes. Heck, you don't even need to be athletic! Although the classes incorporate some of the same fundamental movements as pilates and yoga, it is a different beast - trust me. The positions might look pretty and the ranges of motion are small, but don't let that fool you!! You'll sweat, pant, shake and feel the burn in class and for days after. read more

As a foreigner and new comer to Austin, I chose fitness club randomly and didn't expect too much. However, After 6 classes in 2 weeks, I, a lazy woman, have to say it's really worth of the money: (1)Class content is carefully designed with enough muscle and extension exercise.(I choose to plus cardio exercising myself like jogging or swimming for 20 minutes after leaving the classroom) (2)Class length is reasonably 1 hour which makes me have maximal exercise without feeling starving. (3)Schedule is flexible. I'm an early bird so I choose the first class of every other day: 6am or 8:15am. (4) The maximal number is 19. So it is a small class.If you choose morning class there are only 4-5 people so tutors have enough time to help everybody. (5)Tutors are professional and very carefully correcting my gesture. My English is poor so I hardly understand what they say but still can catch up by observing. However,every tutor comes to me to offer advice friendly and correct me carefully. I mean every one of them. It's so surprising and touching! (6)Tutors look pretty and seems have good ballet experience which make me wanna exercise more to be like them. TIPS: (1)Even if you buy single class the first time, you can still choose to buy the 2 for 1 or 100USD/month unlimited card, which is only for new clients. (2)If you wanna buy sports wear you can shop in the dancers shape, the trousers I got there for 70 dollars was good texture.However, there is also a SAVERS just 5-minutes walk where you can also get good-quality second-hand sports wear only for 10 dollars. read more

I won a free month of classes through a Yelp giveaway and today was my first class. I went in with some confidence, knowing I have been going to a gym for the last six months at least once a week to do cardio and weight machines. Boy, I've really been cheating myself. I need to take classes so someone is there to motivate me. After taking the Shape class, every muscle is worn out. We jumped right into warming up our arms and legs with easy kicks and arm swings. Then, we pulled out small weights. I used 2-lb weights for most of the arm and shoulder work, and my shoulders were on fire at the end. I didn't know tiny weights could work my arms that much! The barre work had my legs wobbling all over the place--a sure sign I was working my muscles to the max. Most of the work involves small leg lifts using a small exercise ball as a stabilizer between your thighs, and then between your calf and hamstring. After the barre work, we did an assortment of core exercises that included pushups, planks and targeted crunches. At the end, we stretched everything out with a pilates strap. The studio supplies all of the equipment, including a yoga mat, exercise ball, ab mat, weights and pilates strap. Beverly, the instructor, was motivating and gently corrected our positions to make sure we really maximized each exercise. It's a trek to make it to the studio on Burnet from far south Austin, but it's worth it to fit it into my schedule. Now I need a nap. read more

Dancers Shape is such an outstanding addition to the workout world of Austin. Miss Amy D got me interested in this place because she likes to work out there. I grew up from the age of 4 until I was 19 as a dancer and I really believe that there is nothing that can get your body into shape quite like dance (other than maybe Crossfit which is another review for another time). The reason being is that you work all your core muscles in dance classes which include flexibility and strength. These work-outs are hard!!!! Barre is a term used to designate the ballet bar (barre) that is what you hold on to for balance. Even if you take a traditional class like the "shape" class you will only use the barre for part of the time. The rest of the time you will work-out on a mat on the floor. Be aware that most of the work-outs will be in your bare feet. The classes go like this: Shape: This is the most traditional form of class where you use the barre to hold your balance as you squeeze a ball between your legs, lift your legs in various positions and do other movements on the floor. You will also use some hand weights for interval workout. The pace moves very quickly in this class. If you can't handle that you need to take: Graceful: This is a lot like Shape but with a slower pace. Start here. Sport: Using the barre, weight, ect but with a cardio twist to get the heart moving Core class is like pilates and Yoga is Hatha yoga. And the newest addition: Groove. Groove at this time is only held on Saturday but is oh so fun!!! This is a true dance class where you get to dance on the floor to various mixes of songs and genres. If you want to get your full work out on here the recommendation is to come 5 days a week. Each class is $22 unless you buy class passes which depending on how many you purchase can get the cost down to $16 a class. If you auto debit your card for unlimited classes it will cost $160 a month. The owner and one of the instructors is named Jennifer McCamish. Jennifer is the main reason that her place is so great. She was a Rockette in NYC at Radio City Music Hall. After performing for years she had to undergo hip surgery and it was her quest during the healing stage of this that allowed her to find the methods she has personally created herself that form Dancers Shape. The methods she formed helped her to recover from her surgery and she was able to dance professionally again after a 6 year break. I am so thankful that she has come back to Austin and formed this dance studio. You definitely need to catch a class taught by Jennifer as she is the best, though the other dance instructors she has on board are awesome too. A final tip is to tell you to book your class ahead of time online. Since the class only holds about 20 people some of the more popular ones will book up (such as Groove) and if you don't book online you may not be able to get a spot. read more

So I'm getting married, and when I tried on THE perfect dress, I saw it... the back fat. The teacher arms. Some other weird chub. Ugh. I'll be damned if I have flab on my perfect day (not the back fat; NOT THE BACK FAT!). Now, here's the thing about me: to get me to exercise, there's gotta be a pretty nice carrot dangling at the end of it all for me to be even remotely interested. My sister swore by barre workouts (and has the awesome body to prove it), so I thought I'd give it a try. Carrot = smoking hot body for my wedding day. Here's the thing though; wedding or not, I actually LIKE doing this. It's a workout I look forward to, and I go out of my way to ensure I can fit it into my schedule. The first time I tried barre it was at a different studio, a nationwide chain that shall not be named, and I wasn't so much a fan. The workout was okay, but the instructor was super impersonal, I had to wear socks (or buy their own little padded things that you find in hospitals in order not to slip around), and yeah... I wasn't feeling it. But I had heard really great things about Dancer's Shape so I decided to give it a go. My experience there has been perfection. It's already been said in countless reviews, but I'll briefly add my two cents. The instructors are professional, experienced, and FRIENDLY. I think I've taken class with all but one and they've all been fantastic. After going fairly regularly for over a month, my butt still gets kicked, even though I'm noticeably stronger, more toned, and losing the dreaded back fat. Even though my work schedule is wack-a-doo, I can always find a class to go to. I never feel pressured to do more than I can handle, and all the instructors are very good about showing modifications. I mostly go to the shape classes, but I try with all my might to make the Tuesday night Yoga class too - I actually wish they offered more than just one (and that would be my ONLY complaint). I am really glad I decided to give barre a second chance, and I wouldn't go anywhere else in Austin. I can't wait to see the results after month number two (and three, and four...). read more

Not a dancer in any way (unless dance video games count) but I love going to Dancers Shape. So much in fact that this is my first ever Yelp review (congrats DS! you earned it). I've been going for about a year now, mostly taking Shape, sometimes Graceful, and Yoga. I've had most, if not all, of the teachers for Shape and they are all great and different in their own little ways. When I first started going, I was a little intimidated and wary of potential snobby or hip attitudes but I was happy to discover that the teachers & Jennifer the owner were warm and friendly. They put a lot of effort into making everyone feel welcome and comfortable, which I really appreciate. I second other reviewers' comments about Emily's yoga class. It is a wonderful yoga class. It's always been hard for me to find a yoga class that I like and I'm really happy that I can use my 20-class pass at DS for yoga as well as barre classes, and such a good yoga class at that! It's also a helpful counterpart if you feel like you're not getting enough stretching in Shape. By the way, even if you've been doing Shape for a while, try checking out Graceful every now and then. I did one evening when Shape was full and found that with the slower pace and more detailed verbal instructions, I could focus on really getting the posture / muscle form right, which led to a better / deeper workout. (It could just be me though, I'm bad at getting postures right quickly.) Another thing that I really like (which is completely subjective) is the music they play. I really love the mix of pop / upbeat dance tunes that they play, occasionally mixed in with old school hits. During one of my first classes, I was thinking what is this awesome song they are playing that I've never heard before? (I think it was Charli XCX - SuperLove) Anyway, I'm glad they play songs I like - it makes the workouts more enjoyable. :) And lastly, I really like that they offer classes later in the evening (7/8 pm). I started coming here in Feb/March 2011 after a friend referred me to this studio. I fell in love with the burn and had to keep coming back for more! Doing this twice a week definitely helped me get back into shape faster than I ever imagined after not working out for a year. I really didn't know what to expect until my first class ended. Jennifer checked up on me via email asking how I was doing, feeling, or if I was experiencing any bad pain after my first class. I definitely was sore for the next few days, but in a good way. If I had to refer a friend now, I would tell them expect to be barefoot and have the best total body workout of your life with a ballet barre. Every instructor has their own set of exercises, but they all work the same muscle group. Each shape class starts off with a warm-up with dynamic stretching. Following, an upper body workout that is not too hard, but extremely effective with a set of light a heavy weights. Afterwards, it's legs and glutes. This is definitely the hardest part for me as my legs are shaking after a few minutes. Last but not least, is core. They have an ab mat and a mini 9-inch exercise for those that have back problems like me. Stretching is done after working every major muscle group and at the very end of the class. I have also tried their core class, which I love because Toussaint kicks my butt in that class every time! Dancers Shape is BY FAR the best barre studio I've been to in Austin. I've visited a few others and not a single one corrected my posture to prevent from injury, not a single one even asked if I had any injuries, and none of the instructors were even certified for injury prevention to help me rehabilitate. Also, none of them went above and beyond to check in on me like Jennifer did. I love the close-knit feeling when I walk into a studio and can talk to any of the instructors like a friend or family member. When my Pilates instructor is raving about this place, I know I chose right. read more

Dancer's Shape is the first place I ever tried barre workouts, and it happens to be the best one. Jennifer McCamish and all of the instructors are really nice, knowledgeable and super fit! You really get your money's worth -- a good, solid hour of working out, instructor attention, and very little fluffy stuff. Unlike some other barre studios in town, they offer such a variety of classes to fit different interests and needs. In addition to three levels of the Shape class, they offer a dance class, yoga, core, pre-natal, athletic conditioning and more. It's great that they're so accommodating to different fitness levels and types of clients. In conclusion, this is the best barre studio in Austin. They'll kick your butt and you'll love it! read more

I would give Dancers Shape 6 stars if I could. After being turned away by Pure Barre because the receptionist claimed they were full, I headed over to Dancer's Shape and I SO GLAD THAT I DID. The instructors at Dancers Shape are all in incredible shape, encouraging, fun and precise. While the workout was very challenging, I find myself excited to come back the moment I leave. The atmosphere and equipment is modern and meticulously clean. My only wish is that they would reincorporate an actual dance class :) read more

I had been driving by Dancer's Shape since I moved to the neighborhood a year ago. It has been on my list to try whenever my other barre memberships are used up. This weekend they offered free classes for their anniversary so I stopped by for a sampler class. The sampler class consisted of cardio and barre and it was HARD. It was incredibly fast paced and used very different barre methods than anything I was used to. I left drenched in sweat and was sore the next day- 2 signs of a great workout. I will probably be back to Dancer's Shape, but will start with the beginner level classes so I can learn their methods a little better and work my way up to the advanced and cardio versions. My friend works here, so she invited me to a free class that was being taught by a beginning instructor. I had just finished Crosspit at Austin Fitness Martial Arts, so I was pretty tired, which made the class even more challenging. I took the Shape class, which mainly uses small weights and numerous repetitions to tone. They also use the barre and include an ab section as well. I will say that if you aren't a dancer, the beginning may be a bit confusing, especially when they use dancer lingo you don't understand. The instructor and my friend were very helpful though, and I felt like I got a great workout. I especially like stretching with the band at the end. If I wasn't moving and didn't already belong to AFMA, I would definitely sign up. read more

Many of us will experience that fateful day when we look in the mirror and realize we had better get ourselves into shape. Well, that day hit me pretty hard recently and I started looking for a workout class. Having danced ballet in my younger days, the appeal of any class with the word 'barre' in it was logical. The sign-up process was so easy. I went online and selected the new student special of $100 for a month of unlimited class. Then, after paying my fee, I logged into my new student account to make my reservations for the classes I wanted to take. This was the easiest process ever, so naturally I was lulled into complacency thinking this was going to be a breeze. I got to the studio, easy to locate off of Burnet Road. And, there is free parking in the on-site garage. I quickly found a space and darted excitedly out of my car and straight into the center. The center was beautiful. They provide everything you need for the class and even provide towels for use during class. There is a changing area and those old style gym baskets to store your street gear in. Jennifer, my instructor for the Graceful class, was so sweet and friendly, little did I appreciate that the woman could give a medieval dungeon master lesson in torture! Only her implements of choice are a mat, hand weights, a little ball and a strap! Holy mother of G*d! That woman is a task master! Right now, every major muscle I have is screaming "kill me now!" Seriously, though, Jennifer provided modifications to the exercises for a first timer like myself. She warned me prior to class starting that everything would hurt later because the purpose of the class was to work the muscles to exhaustion. During the class, Jennifer demonstrated the exercises and, if I wasn't doing it right, came over to realign my body so I would get the most benefit from the exercises. She reminded us to breathe...good thing because I discovered that when your muscles are screaming at you, you do forget to breathe. More importantly, I get the feeling that if I stick with her program, I will develop the healthy body that I want. Thanks, Dancer's Shape! EDITED TO ADD: The next day, Jennifer emailed to see how I was feeling and to encourage me in my efforts to get into shape. I'm impressed because I've never had that happen before at any class I've ever taken. It shows that she is invested in making her business a success by taking care of her clients. My friend, Beverly, is an instructor at Dancer's Shape and recommended that I attend the pre-natal workshop that was held in May of 2013. I have to admit that I was very intimidated by the movements at first and found them very challenging and awkward. However, as other users have stated, you really do get addicted to the burn once you figure out the proper positioning. I have been attending about 2-3 Graceful classes a week on average since I have been 20 weeks pregnant and am now 37 weeks along. Thanks to Jennifer's help with the pregnancy modifications, I am now stronger and more balanced than I was before I was pregnant!! My pregnancy weight gain is right on target and I have not felt very uncomfortable or achy with my growing body which I am attributing in large part to Dancer's Shape. I will say that the classes are expensive but definitely worth it. The online scheduling system is very convenient and lets you track all of the classes you have attended. Be sure to make reservations for the popular classes especially the ones on weekends. I plan to take advantage of the bounce-back, post-delivery discount and am excited to try another class other than Graceful. read more

Dancers shape is my new favorite barre studio in Austin, and I've tried just about all of them that are available through the classpass app. Just when I thought barre classes didn't make me sore anymore, I tried out dancers shape and I am definitely feeling it two says later. Who thought id actually be excited about coming back to a class that makes me sore?! If barre isn't your thing, they have several types of classes such as yoga and cardio classes. The studio is located in the first floor retail of the AMLI 5350 building so parking is easy to find (and free!) in the AMLI retail center parking garage. The front desk staff was very welcoming and thorough when showing me around the entire studio on my first visit. Some of the studio amenities include storage cubbies, hanging racks, and a large mirrored dressing area. I'd highly recommend dancers shape to anyone looking to change up their fitness routine or try out a new studio! read more

I've been taking classes here for a month now, and, let me tell you, it has made a WORLD of difference in my life. I purchased their grand opening special for a month of unlimited classes and I took about four to five classes a week. It was intense, but so worth it. Worth it even if I had paid full price, which I will be doing soon. Jennifer McCamish is the owner, and she teaches many of the classes herself. There is definitely a passion here, and you can feel it in every class. She is concerned, attentive and genuine. She is also very good at remembering names! I feel like she makes it a point to remember names and maybe even encourages the other instructors to do the same, as they seem to have similar habits. Really nice people. There are six different types of classes offered - Shape, Sport, Groove, Graceful, Core, and Yoga (and I hear that she is going to be offering a new yoga-type class as well). I haven't taken the Sport, Graceful or Core classes. The Shape class is the most offered class and the basic series this place is based on. You get about 10 or so minutes focused on different parts of the body (arms and upper body, hips, core and the bum), and those parts are worked to the max. A lot of concern is put into correct form, and you are not made to feel bad when you need to take a break and wiggle around a bit. The music is fun and a nice distraction when your legs are shaking. When I started these classes I was taking lots of breaks and sweating like crazy. By the end of the month, I have a much tighter body, defined muscles, and I can carry way more grocery bags than ever before. =D The Groove class I only took once, but it was fun. It's a lighter class that has an element of choreography in it. The Yoga class is awesome. Taught by Zakiyyah Kareem, it's got a different focus that she brings to it each week. It's always invigorating and leaves you feeling amazing. I'm so happy this place has opened up in my neighborhood! Now I am just crossing my fingers that they add a teacher's discount. read more

I've been attending Dancers Shape now for close to 3 months - and I LOVE it! Not only are the classes super fun with excellent instruction - the results are to die for! I have never had this much strength in my body before! I look DAMN GOOD! It's remarkable how quick progress is. Your first few classes might be intense and you might feel confused, but don't worry, that will pass as your body learns very quickly what it's supposed to be doing and you will settle into a steady upward road of progress. And once you feel comfortable, they have other classes to challenge and inspire you. Shape is their normal class. Graceful is a step below, very similar to Shape but perhaps a slower tempo and more focus on proper form. I would recommend just doing Graceful to start. I have not taken Restorative, but I believe it is a step below Graceful. Onto the challenging classes!! They have Advanced, Power, Core, Groove, and now they're offering chair classes! I mean, I haven't even had time to try all of these! I've been to Power, which is AWESOME, it is a crazy cardio/strength class that is way fast, no time for thinking, you just go! I just took Core for the first time a few days ago and I am still sore! I didn't even realize at the time how much work I was doing! They do also offer yoga classes, which is nice bc you really need to stretch after all that cardio and strength training. They offer A LOT of classes in general, even if you work 8 to 5, they have 545am classes and 6 or 7pm classes. You'll definitely find a time that works for you. They do an excellent job of explaining how to do the exercises properly so that you are engaging the right muscles and not injuring yourself. That right there is extremely important to me, so I just wanted to include that for anyone who is looking specifically for that. So yeah! Hands down, awesome! This is the first barre studio I ever went to, unfortunately I had to stop bc my work was too far to make it to any of the classes. The good news is that I am moving offices and now I can resume classes. I've been to barre method , but compared to dancers shape they have nothing. At dancers I feel the improvement and the studio is more personal, Jennifer the owner takes time to help her clients and will send individual emails to help with adjusted techniques. I have been visiting from Sydney and was lucky enough to be staying above Dancer's Shape Studio. The unlimited pass was too hard to pass up after visting the studio and meeting some of the instructors and then seeing all the reviews on Yelp. Everything you read is true. All the classes I have taken in the last 3 weeks have been fantastic. I would recommend trying Graceful as a first option as Shape is quite fast moving for new starters. Core is really challenging, but in a good way. Jennifer, Mariclaire, Kari and Toussaint are really encouraging and help make sure I have good form to get the most of out of my workouts. I have to say, that I have been going about 5 times a week for the last 3 weeks and it is addictive! I am really going to miss it now I have to return home, but I will be back!! So, these classes are pretty hard. I won't lie, if you haven't been in a gym in a couple of months it's going to be a rough start. I joined because I wanted something to strengthen my body without causing injury since I was only 5 months out of spine surgery. The wonderful thing about ALL the classes at DS is that every instructor will ask you if you have injuries and then help modify exercises through out the class. They are excellent at remembering each student and what their injuries are. After only one month of classes I could notice a visible difference in my arms, legs, and butt. The main difference I noticed was that I honestly just felt better mentally. Even when the scale wasn't moving, I still felt strong and toned. These classes focus mainly on stabilization and isolation, so they're perfect if you're a dancer or athlete and want to strengthen all those tiny muscles we don't know we have. I absolutely loved taking classes with the owner Jennifer because you just know she's going to kick your butt. The only downside to Dancers Shape is that it is pretty pricey, although I understand why- because those ladies give you results! Bam! Here's to being back down to a size 4! read more

I cannot even begin to describe how much I LOVE DANCERS SHAPE. I've been going for about two years now and am emotionally attached. I really really wish Jennifer would open up a location in Houston so I can continue my DS routine after I graduate. The instructors here are AWESOME. They are so motivating and compliment you personally during class. Equipment is always clean; you wipe down your mats after every class. I also love the variety of classes they offer; I don't have to sign up for a yoga studio just to take a yoga class once in a while. I am seriously in love and sooo attached. Ok. I've been taking classes at Pure Barre down on 2244 for about 4 months and just moved to the neighborhood. I was excited to see a studio nearby (I can walk!) that seemed to offer the same kind of workout. Let me tell you - Dancers Shape is friendlier, more relaxed, and a better workout. Down south I felt out of place surrounded by snooty head-to-toe Lululemon'ed soccer moms. At DS the atmosphere was laid back and welcoming. The other students and the teachers were happy to chat and share their experiences. The class was taught by Jennifer, the owner. The pace was fast and the workout was challenging. At the end of class Jennifer spent extra time with me showing some other stretching equipment they have in the studio to help with a super-tight IT Band. Jennifer even followed up a few days later via email to make sure I was doing ok after the class (yes, I was insanely sore in muscles that I didn't know I had). I probably can't afford a 4xweek habit, but I will certainly be back. :) read more

What more shall I say that hasn't been said? I, too, had an amazing time getting my ass kicked at Dancers Shape. It's been years since I've really gotten any exercise; graduating & getting a full-time job was sadly the end of my daily morning run and the beginning of endless stress and comfort-eating. So, I wanted something intense enough to kick my lazy self into gear, something gentle enough to reintroduce my unfit body to exercise, and something fun that will make me want to keep going back. Dancers Shape definitely meets all three. I'd never done Barre Fitness before, so if you're not familiar, they'll work all your muscle groups to fatigue (intense!) with lots of stretching and meticulous attention to technique (gentle/low-impact!), all to upbeat music in a clean, pretty space, with super friendly staff (makes you want to keep coming back!) Yay! I started with the slower-paced ("Graceful") class, but all the normal classes ("Shape") are open-level. They encourage you to work at your own level, while still challenging yourself, and not to feel bad if you need to take a break or have to fall out of a pose. I feel pretty sore today, but I absolutely cannot wait to go back. It wasn't hard to catch on to what was going on, and the teachers keep a special eye out for you when you're new. It's a totally welcoming environment. They're in the middle of expanding their studio, which currently only contains one room, in order to accommodate more people and more classes, so that's exciting. It does mean that for the meanwhile their water fountains are out of order, so bring your own water or $2 for a large bottle of SmartWater from the front desk. Other plusses: they have new client specials on class prices, the online scheduler is super easy and convenient, and there's free parking! I began attending classes at Dancer's Shape on and off a couple of years ago, but have been going consistently (5-6 times/week) for the past 10 months. During this time, I've lost nearly 40 pounds, have become more toned, and my energy has sky-rocketed! I have nothing but good things to say about this place! The Instructors: Absolutely the most energetic and kind group of people I have ever encountered. They really help you perfect your form so that you get the most out of your workout. The Emily's also have a tendency to make you laugh during class, which really does help you forget how much your legs are shaking! DS feels like a second home to me, and it's because the staff are so welcoming and encouraging. The girls are just simply fantastic! The Classes: Shape is their foundation class - and paired with Core, it's a killer way to get toned. They are challenging, but so incredibly rewarding (especially when you are able to do a pike for the first time ever!). I have these class to thank for my newly found muscle definition. I regularly take their Power and Advanced classes, which are very high cardio but they incorporate the foundations of Shape as well. These classes help me wipe the stress of the day away and always leave me feeling energized! They offer several other classes as well, including Chair workouts, Athletic Conditioning, and Yoga, which I do enjoy whenever I can make it! They have specials for new-comers - so go try out a class! I am confident that you'll love it just as much as I do! read more

I aspire to be as fit as Jennifer, the owner and instructor. I love this place! I am fairly fit and am a runner, but the workout here kicks my butt. Muscles that I didn't know I had were sore after each class. The shape class is a great full-body workout, but you are not dripping in sweat. Jennifer is a great instructor! She is very friendly and helps you get the most out of your workout. Although you are in a class, Jennifer's makes it feel like you are getting a personal trainer since she is very attune to how you are performing your moves. read more

The place is filled with beautiful people many of whom already have beautiful dancer bodies. If this is a motivation for you, as it is for me, then go for it. If that is annoying, then avoid! The class was intense. I felt like a pansy for having to stop every now and then, but my expertise is cardio not strength. This class is not very cardio based, but primarily based on core and strengthening. What a wonderful experience! Jennifer, the owner, was such a delight to have teaching the class. The Shape class was an effective combination of weights, the ballet barre & interval training, which worked every muscle group (hence, my soreness the day after). I honestly thought this class would be a breeze since I am on the Insanity workout schedule [the Insanity workout is interval training, which consists of long bursts of ultra-high intensity moves followed by brief periods of rest], but the class provided a totally different kind of work out that my body was not ready for & boy, did I feel the burn! Just after spending a few minutes with Jennifer, you will realize how well-trained & motivating she is. She was definitely a plus in this experience. I was in awe when I walked around the studio, as it was so clean & inviting. The equipment was pristine & it's always great when you don't cringe at the thought of having to use shared equipment.
