2026 review This place is a hidden gem. The food is authentic Chinese. The chef has been cooking for a very long time, and the staff are the sweetest. Every time I go there, I leave satisfied in food, taste, and service. If you're lucky, the Cook will give you free items, like eggrolls or Chinese donuts. The portions are shareable, and the prices are decent. Unfortunately, the shopping center does not look attractive, but this restaurant has been here since the beginning. Don't miss this one out. This place gets a lot of points for its service. Our waiter was super friendly and came by to check on us several times during our meal. My family and I came pretty late on a random Wednesday. We needed a quick bite to eat after attending a function up near Cypress. After looking at a few reviews we decided to stop by this place. We got the lunch specials which come with an egg roll and a soup. I got the egg drop and everyone else got the hot and sour. I think it compares pretty well with what I was expecting. The egg roll was also pretty good. It and the food were freshly made so they came out hot and delicious. I got the stir fry beef and I liked it. You know why I have not written a review after so many years? I really want to collect enough dining experience here. Yesterday, I was craving for noodle soup but don't feel like fighting the traffic to my usual restaurants 2 miles away. My coworkers always ask me about Shanghai Inn restaurant. To be honest. I don't find the food here delicious. But since it's far away from Chinatown, I have to say just okay. I'd rather go to Panda Express for Americanized Chinese food or Mambo Seafood for shrimp fried rice. I don't have a strong stomach to experiment lunch at Shanghai Inn. I've been here a couple of times when I stayed at Studio 8 next door over a decade ago. I didn't like it then. But I'm willing to try again for my coworkers. Last time I was here 4 years ago I ordered noodle dish called ja chan mien 炸酱面. I ordered a noodle soup yesterday. They had similar runny gravy. Sorry, not my style. Then, the meats had absurd taste. The only thing saved this review from being a 1 star was the eggroll. I considered it authentic to Mandarin cuisine standard that I'm accustomed to. It's a popular lunch spot for some in Northwest side of town and Highway 290. But you just come here to eat food and don't use the bathroom. That was the tiniest men's restroom I've ever seen. I was in a car accident and had to tell my husband to pick up my order. This guy, manager/owner I assume, called me 5 minutes after my order was ready and told me to pick up my order ASAP. Low and behold, when I get home I found out my order was missing an item. Seriously? I had given this place a chance because it's comfort food, not because of taste. On top of that, when I called to inform him he told me to either pick up the item in 10 minutes or that he would give me "store credit" but not before asking me if I was sure the $5.99 item was missing. Lunch specials include pork fried rice, soup and an egg roll. I ordered the Orange Chicken lunch special, which is my go-to dish at a Chinese restaurant. Not to enticed by "pork fried rice", so I opted for the steamed white rice. No option for chicken or shrimp-fried rice. The wonton soup was okay, nothing special about it. Lunch arrived a few minutes later, perfect timing. The orange chicken serving was very generous and a large scoop of steam rice. The chicken was covered in a glaze of orange sauce. The sauce was okay, tangy and reminded me of sweet and sour. I am used to a little spice in my orange chicken. The waitress happily brought me hot sauce aka chili sauce upon request. The orange chicken was okay, most of the pieces were "fork tender", the others were cut with some moderate effort. The egg roll was crispy, but a little below par. The steamed white rice was done just right. Overall, I am satisfied. The generous portions overcame "okay" quality. $8 (with tip) was a good value for the variety and quantity. I am very full at the moment. The staff were attentive and polite. I noticed they cleaned the tables promptly. In the end, generous portions, lunch specials at a decent price. I remember my family ordering from Shanghai Inn when I was younger, possibly 5-10 years ago and it being delicious. I stopped by today and ordered a House Chow Mein and maybe I meant to get Lo Mein but either way, their chow mein is like goop. A very thick gravy like consistency. When I waited for my food to be ready since I ordered to go, I sat in the bar area. Behind the bar is now used for storage and the glass cups hanging from the bar were filthy and covered in dust. It also did not smell of food in this restaurant, it smelled more old and dusty. I would not recommend this place and seeing as only 2 tables were sat in the entire place during the lunch hour, I do not think I am the only one who has this opinion. read more

It was really cheap with lots of food but with it being so cold our food had to be eaten very fast. The staff was friendly and efficient. I actually set up a yelp account just so I could warn potential customers. Don't expect to get your sweet & sour sauce with your sweet & sour chicken. It would make too much sense to do so. Don't order Hot & Sour soup and Sweet & Sour anything in the same order...he says they sound the same and that is why I didn't get my sauce or soup in my order. Also if you want delivery, no one in the building can do it before 5pm because they are too busy sitting in the front of the restaurant hanging out. I saw 3 to 4 people sitting there and my order for 3 couldn't be completed or packed correctly. The food is so-so but I personally have a hard time with stupidity and laziness, so I will take my business elsewhere. read more
