Long story short: Shanahan's will lie, cheat, & steal just to make a quick buck off you.
Long story: A few months ago, we noticed water leaking from our AC's return duct. We called a nearby HVAC company and, during a free consultation, were told the leak was caused by temperature differences/condensation buildup & our AC was a commercial unit, which they weren't licensed to work on. We called the prior owner & were told Shanahan's installed the unit & serviced it many times. The fact that Shanahan's installed a commercial AC unit in an 800 sq ft house should've been a red flag...but hindsight is 20/20.
I emailed Shanahan's to get the unit's service history & see if they could fix it. They sent back several prior invoices & said I'd be called by Mr. Shanahan himself. Mr. S called a few days later & said he'd review the service history & call me back with more info about how to proceed. So far, so good...but from there, it quickly went downhill.
After about 2 months of ignored emails and no call back, a dripping sound started coming from our duct. I contacted Shanahan's yet again & was abruptly told to schedule an appt for the next day. I was told nothing more than to schedule an appt, which I did.
My wife took off work & 2 techs arrived as scheduled. She explained the issue & was told it would cost $70 to check the AC unit (which is located on our roof). They also said it was useless to check the unit at that time because it wasn't running (it was winter). Instead, they recommended we schedule an appt in the spring. For this reason (and because my wife didn't think there'd be any costs associated with the visit), she told them not to go on the roof. She then mentioned the dripping sound in our duct. The techs said it could have something to do with our heating system. After quickly looking at the heating system, they said it looked fine & was likely not causing the issue. At that point, my wife thanked them for their time & was ready to see them out...until they said she owed them $99 for the visit.
My wife was surprised & called me to confirm that this wasn't a free consultation. I was also surprised. The techs told us that the price was agreed upon when I made the appt (LIE) & that they couldn't leave until we paid. Although the techs had been very nice & professional so far, this made my wife uncomfortable as (understandably) she didn't want to be alone with 2 men who claimed she owed them money & refused to leave. So, she wrote them the check so they'd leave (STEAL).
I immediately called the office & spoke with the woman I made the appt with. I told her that: (1) there wasn't any price discussion prior to the visit and (2) I wasn't sure why she told me to schedule an appt if it was too cold outside to check the AC unit.
I asked her not to cash the check until these issues were resolved & she said Mr. S would call me to discuss the matter further. Days went by with no call...and, sure enough, the check was cashed.
I emailed again and was ignored, so I left several voicemails. I eventually found Mr. S's personal cell phone number (from the one time he did call me) and called him directly. He answered & the lies began. He told me we'd agreed upon the price before the appt, he didn't know why I scheduled the appt during the winter, the techs HAD actually gone on our roof during the appt, and that he had no service history for our unit. He also said if we wanted to continue to work with Shanahan's, they'd charge us the standard rate of $70 per 15 minutes.
I pointed out that my wife had specifically told the techs NOT to go on our roof & there was no way she wouldn't have noticed if they'd done so against her wishes. He said he would ask the techs & call me back.
I tried following up by phone a week later but never heard from him again. It's been a few months now & I don't expect to ever hear back or get a refund. I strongly suggest you avoid Shanahan's at all costs. read more
