Owner was HORRIBLE. He cussed me out/yelled at me for talking quietly on the phone in the shop and apparently taking too long? I was there for 30 minutes. I honestly have no explanation for his behavior. He blew up on me literally out of nowhere. This was the best street on Seaside for me as so many awesome local stores. How sweet to find a rock store! And a rock store like this one which had such an amazing inventory of them available to wander through. I wanted a flat piece to put a grid on where Shamous had so many to choose from. Came here on a rainy day with my two young kids, who weren't stoked about the idea of going to a "rock shop". Shamous quickly changed their moods! What a lovely, knowledgable man. We purchased some rocks for my mom and Shamous gave both of my kids some beautiful sand dollars for free. I recently visited the coast once again, and was thrilled to find Wise Guys Burger across the street (affordable and gluten free friendly). After enjoying an early lunch there, we strolled across the street to this lapidary shop as I'm a fan of rocks, as well as my daughter. This place has everything from $1 tumbled stones, to thousands of dollars in rare, beautiful cut slabs that have been polished. They even had a whole, fossilized turtle shell. There is a lot more to see than first greets the eye upon stepping in the shop. There are two back wing rooms on the left and right, trippling the number of rocks to look through. I could have spent at least an hour there, but cut it short to accomidate the boys. There were wire wrapped, polished rocks hanging behind the counter. They man who runs the place is a font of knowledge. He finds some of the rocks himself and brings in some from other sources, but he clearly knows what he sells and what is available well. He also offers to slice rocks open for a small fee, for you. If you are traveling along Hwy 101, this rock shop and Wise Guys Burgers are two stops you need to make. read more

The owner of the store was so kind to my daughter when she asked to use his bathroom shortly after we arrived in Seaside on Easter Sunday. This store has it all, and the owner is very knowledgeable. He also gave of lots of good feedback on hikes, etc. Towns like Seaside become family favorites because of experiences with business owners like this one. It is so nice to talk with people who love what they do. He told my daughter that if she didn't find a sand dollar on the beach, to come back before we left town and he'd give her one for free. We bought an awesome petrified trilobite, and a section of rock with a seashell fossil. read more

This rock shop has a great variety of stones in different states of processing. From raw stone to completely tumbled, smooth stone/polished slabs. Shamous is passionate and knowledgeable about his stones. He's pulled a lot of it from the ground himself and certainly cut and polished/tumbled much of it with his own hands. If you're a rock hound of any level I highly recommend a visit to his store. Be prepared to spend plenty of time there perusing his excellent stock. Also, most of these specimens are not museum type pieces, so they're actually affordable to buy and appreciate at home. When we visit the coast we make sure that we always allot a trip to his shop. Went to Seaside about a month ago and one of our plans was to go find rock and gem stores. We went to Oddities just down the road from Shamous'es first because we saw that the guy at Oddities had rocks too. We ended up buying stuff from both stores, and both guys were really cool to talk to. The reason I'm giving Shamous 5 stars is because he went above and beyond what I would expect of a shop owner. He was super polite, very easy going, and didn't pressure us at all. But that's not why I think he's so great. That reason is the fact that we bought a geode from Oddities, and that guy just told us to break it open in a sock. Shamous wouldn't let us do that and destroy thousands of beautiful tiny crystals so instead he offered to cut it for us, and he did, FOR FREE! :) He told us come back in a half hour and he'd have it done. When we came back he presented us with two beautiful halves of geode, but then he even gave us another geode half for free because he "wanted us to have it." I honestly was so impressed with his professionalism and kindness that I will always be a fan of his and I will be sad when I get to be his age and my trips to the beach will no longer include visiting him. read more
