    DO NOT -- I REPEAT, DO NOT -- RENT FROM THE BUDGET/AVIS LOCATION ON LEE ROAD IN SHAKER HEIGHTS…read more This was hands down the worst rental experience I've ever had -- and I've rented cars all over the country. This location is a filthy, disorganized, and unprofessional disgrace to the Budget brand and should be investigated, if not outright shut down. The office smelled like a mixture of Black & Mild cigars and stale air, and the carpet and interior were coated in dust and grime. I had prepaid for my rental and was given a car that was completely saturated with the stench of cigarette smoke -- so strong that both my clothes and my daughter's clothes smelled after just one ride. These are supposed to be non-smoking vehicles, but clearly, this location doesn't enforce that policy. I called immediately to report the issue and was told to return the next day for an exchange. When I arrived, I was met by Presha, who claimed to be the manager. She told me she only had two cars available and that they were being held until 5 p.m. for other renters. If they didn't show up, I could maybe get one. If they did, I would have to drive myself to the airport to exchange the car. She refused to offer a refund, a gas credit, or any kind of apology or compensation for the inconvenience and health hazard. I asked if she could at least call the airport location to explain the situation ahead of time so I wouldn't have to wait in line and re-explain everything. Her response? That Budget employees aren't allowed to call other locations directly. That sounded suspicious , and I was right. When I finally got to the Cleveland Hopkins Airport Budget counter, I was helped by a professional and apologetic manager who immediately confirmed that Presha was not telling the truth. She explained that if Presha was truly a manager, she absolutely had the capability and authority to call another manager at a different location to assist with a customer issue. So either Presha lied outright or she is woefully unqualified for her position. Either way, it's unacceptable. To make matters worse, I am immunocompromised, so being forced to use a car that reeked of smoke is more than an inconvenience -- it's a serious health risk. Budget's complete lack of concern or accountability is outrageous. Thankfully, the airport team was everything the Shaker Heights team was not: professional, kind, and capable. But the damage was done. I will be filing a formal complaint with corporate and encouraging everyone I know to steer far away from this location. This Budget office on Lee Road in Shaker Heights is a joke -- dirty, dishonest, and completely unfit to be serving the public. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME, MONEY, OR ENERGY HERE. DO NOT TRUST THIS LOCATION. AND DO NOT BELIEVE A WORD PRESHA TELLS YOU. This experience has soured me completely. I will never rent from Budget or Avis again.

However, the overall experience is very bad. The young man gave us a 2018 Nissan Maxima, "a little upgrade" according to him. But upon closer look, the car has many minor scratches/dints, right-side rear-view mirror was crack'd, interior is dirty, and the back window was covered with leftover glue (he later told us a customer put on a tinted window film & can't be removed cleanly). Since the guy showed his displeasure throughout the whole process, we decided to not argue with him further. When I asked where's the key, the guy said it's in the car, and he went back to his office. We hop in, and tried to find the key. Well, we can't find it. We went back to his office and asked. He said "Oops, it's in my pocket", and then he handed it to me. He didn't say sorry or nothing. I was going to say "thank you", and I am glad that I didn't. After a day of driving, I realized the back window clearance is a big issue for me, and I tried to remove the leftover glue, but it was impossible. So we called the guy, he told us he didn't have any full-size car left, if we want to exchange, he can only give us Chevy Spark. I said okay. We look at the website, and realized it's a subcompact car, way too small for us. So I called him several times trying to cancel the appointment, but he didn't pick up the phone. The next day, we went into his office. Fortunately, we met his boss, an older gentleman. without saying much, he agreed to give us a different car. And he gave us this clean 2020 Nissan Altima, while it's not a premium model, it's good for us. Then came Saturday, it's time to return our car. We called them and again no one answered, soon we realized their office is closed. We decided to go there still. The rental is inside a Double Tree hotel, and the staff said we can leave the key in the drop box. But we preferred to have a complete & clean return, so we went to the other rental place about 15 miles away. To our surprise, even this older gentleman who gave us this newer car, while more professional than the young man, he didn't tell us that they will be closed on the day of our return. If you are determined to come here to rent a car, please lower your expectation & ask all the questions first so you won't be surprised.

When I got there, I checked the board and saw my vehicle was waiting in a designated spot. I loaded my stuff in the car, get to the exit and the person at the check out looked at the car, then the reservation, then told me, with quite a snark, my car is the "Impala in spot 111". Well, maybe I made a mistake. Went back to the spot and, nope, this was the vehicle in spot 111. Additionally there was no Impala to be found nearby. I go back to the booth and inform Mr Snarky this is the vehicle that WAS in spot 111 and there's no Impala I could see. He dismisses me, gets on the phone talks to someone, then tells me (with added snot for good measure I guess) go to spot 11 or 12. I tell him you should just let me take the Jeep Wrangler (not like it was a Caddy). He says "we can't just give these away". Not looking for a freebie. Just don't make my move all my crap and warm up another car! Not only that, 3 minutes out of the rental area, the gas is showing on the first line from full so it wasn't really full and the next day I find out there's no freakin' washer fluid!!! Never again with these twits!! TL/DR They assigned me to the wrong car, was snotty about it, didn't give me a full gas tank and no washer fluid!!

Recently…read moreI was involved in a fender bender and I required a vehicle while I was waiting for my car to come back from the shop. State Farm uses Hertz. This place is small. They are directly attached to a body shop and they seemed to only have a few vehicles for rent. Inside there are two 'stations' for customers to visit with the Hertz employees. 2014/2013 Chevy Cruze... Grey? Yeah. Grey. I personally believe that a rental shop has more duties than just handing you the keys to a car. I might not be paying for the rental... but someone is! And, If I was paying, I would be upset that they do a poor job of maintaining their vehicles. The car has bangs and bumps and bruises all over it. The employee at Hertz did not really seem to care and even mentioned how he "Wasnt worried about it". The front left wheel/tire has been damaged and vibrates at all speeds. It is also low on air and causes the car to get abysmal gas mileage. If i hadnt needed a car immediately I would have told him to take it back and gone elsewhere. I did enjoy that they picked me up in the car from the body shop.

When asked for credit for half the tank - they refused. Said they do not buy gas from customers. However, if the situation was the other way around they would charge an exorbitant rate for the gas. I would not rent from this company again
