Food was excellent, but expensive! We had cheese fries, burgers and a shake. The cheese fries are good. They're crinkle fries with melted cheese on top. For those who like a cup of cheese on the side, take note. They melt it over top. The burgers are thin and excellent. I had the mound city double, which includes cheese, bacon and a special St. Louis sauce. It was amazing. We also shared a vanilla shake. It was really good. Now, my biggest gripe -- the price. For three orders of cheese fries, one single cheeseburger, one double cheeseburger, one milk shake, and two large drinks, we paid $40! The single cheeseburger was $5.25. Double was $9. No fries with either burger. They're $3.25/order. In conclusion, the place has great food, but I'm not willing to pay the prices except for special occasions. There was plenty of staff in the kitchen, but you could see them laughing, goofing off, and not caring about the speed that they filled the orders. I have to upgrade Shake Shack to five stars because apparently I'm addicted to their burgers (and so is he). We practically skipped to the Shack for lunch the other day. I feel that this is one of the best smash burgers around. Although the line is long, it moves quickly so don't give up. You are given a buzzer after you place your order and it will flash when your food is ready. Don't worry if the tables are full. They normally turn over at a fast pace. The first time we came here, I got a single and it barely covered the bun. The second time I got a double and it was just a little to much for me (although I did finish it all). This time I went back to getting a single, he got a double and we shared the French fries. My burger was delicious and covered the entire bun. What we expected to be an awesome lunch outing really turned out to be sub par. Walking up the line was out the door which told us this placed was tasty and poppin. Turns out it hasn't been open for very long which means this was just the "hot and new" rush which will die down once everyone realizes how bland the food is. Honestly, the best part was the experience of trying to find seating in a overcrowded restaurant. The burgers were so flavorless it was kind of amazing. I got the shake burger which consisted of a bland patty topped with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and shack sauce (which is no more than mayo, mustard, ketchup, and some spices, ie: bland). My husband got a plain burger with just mustard, pickles, and onions which truly accentuated the zero amount of seasoning they use. The overall flavor was just "meat". And of course we couldn't go to shake shack without trying a shake! We opted for classic chocolate which was somehow so bitter that we actually returned it for a refund. When asked what went into it they said it was just chocolate custard. It tasted like they made it out of dark chocolate. Not something we were looking for in a chocolate shake. But if that's something you think you'd like then give it a go! Attended the Opening Day Festivities and I'm so glad I did. The staff and hometown man of the hour, Danny Meyer, nailed it. I am sure there were a few bumps along the way, but for my experience it was spot on. As expected, the line was out the door and down West Pine. I arrived about 45 minutes before opening and the line was already about 40 burger fans deep. While we waited, at various times the staff would come out lead us in cheers and run down the line giving those waiting a "high-five". They also passed out samples of lemonade and cups of hot chocolate. As if that were not enough, those in line were also given; Shake Shack Texting Gloves and a Shake Shack Lollipop. Menus were passed up and down the line, to make things faster once you arrived at the counter. I had already checked things out on the web and knew what I wanted. My meal was a Double Cheese ShackBurger, with a side of Fries and a vanilla concrete with Pecan Pie from Pie Oh My. The burger was kick ass. It was totally an upscale diner burger. Flat, grilled fried with crisp edges. Being raised on a beef farm, I appreciate the 100% Angus beef. It may have upset the PETA protesters outside, but it made my taste-buds and tummy very happy. The lettuce, tomato and ShackSauce was all it needed to make it a complete. I am a huge fan of crinkle cut fries. I know it doesn't really effect the flavor, but the crinkles make it easter for dipping in ketchup. Today, mine were crispy, crunchy and just enough salt. Another thing that is one of my hot buttons, is ketchup served in little cups. Thank-you, SS for making me a happy french fry dipping man. The concrete with a local pie makers, Pecan Pie blended in to vanilla custard will have me spending an extra half hour at the gym. It was totally worth it. Yes. Yes, it's worth the hype. The last time I had Shake Shack was preparing to hopping onto a red eye flight out of JFK airport heading to Africa, and if their burger was that good in an airport restaurant that was about to close for the night?... I knew I needed to try this fresh and in a brick and mortar- so imagine my excitement when I found that one was opening in STL!? My favorite kind of burgers are the well-seasoned, smashed, diner-style, patties. When you bite into these, they are seasoned with something almost garlicky and the special shack sauce sealed the deal for me. One was enough, with a side of crinkle fries. I enjoyed a Shackmeister ale while I was waiting. We got there just a few minutes before opening and we were one of a small handful in line. The burgers are not, I repeat, not over cooked for being diner-style and thinner. As you can see from my photos, the center is still a bit pink. Delicious. They were walking around handing out small scoops of chocolate shake. Yum! Tables are made from recycled bowling alley lanes, all of the papers and plastics are recyclable, and there is an ice water station in the center condiment bar. Very neat. It's a bit more pricy than you are used to paying for what may seem to be fast food. I got: a 16oz Shackmeister ale, two original burgers (took one home for the hubs), and fries. $21.20. The food here at Shake Shack is fantastic however the line to get it is atrocious. I came here last Friday night at about 7:30 p.m. and had an hour wait to get to the register. Luckily we were all waiting in a line inside the restaurant and not having to wait in the cold outside. I had the double Shack burger, fries, and a specialty mint cookie and cream milkshake. My boyfriend had the mound Burger with fries and a Sprite. We both loved our food greatly. He was raving about how good his Sprite was, which I sampled it and I admit it was pretty great for a Sprite. I honestly can't wait for the hype to die down so I can return and not have to wait in line for an hour to get the delicious food here. It also would have helped had there been two registers open instead of just the one register. Then at least maybe the line would have moved faster. On the other hand, they might have that as a logistical system in order to allow tables to open up in the dining room. The dining area here has a lot of tables and at the same time, still not enough tables. The whole time we were eating, people were hovering waiting for a table to open up. My SO and visited for date nite. I am sorry to admit, that for all the hype this place was given, I was a bit underwhelmed. First of all, it was a record warm winter evening, so the line was ridiculously long - to the point that the cashiers were asking people to stand outside. NO THANK YOU. And since the space is pretty much open with a loft/industrial feel, it was crazy loud. The menu boards are conveniently posted on the wall, so you can at least decide what you want as you mosey to the front of the line. (Note to self: they serve wine and beer). When it was finally our turn, we were not greeted by our cashier (who apparently had had a long day, so she was literally draped over her computer) as she was too busy rearranging her hair under her cap, and checking the throngs of patrons not adhering to her periodic shouts of "stand outside". (Hey Shake Shake manager, why not have a door monitor?). When she just stared at us, I had to ask HER if she was ready for our order. (Isn't it supposed to be the other way around?). Surprisingly, our food didn't take too long (we both ordered fries, the Smoke Shack: basically a bacon cheeseburger), and I had a Red Velvet Shake. Although tasty, I was disappointed that 1. Man. We tried. We have tried since this Shake Shack opened. The first time things weren't up to par, I emailed the store leadership with my feedback and received a quick response and apology. Two subsequent visits were met with the same complaints of cold food, and lack of appropriate accompaniments and condiments. Great flavor, juicy, and a decent size. We also order fries, and 1/2 lemonade and 1/2 tea. Love the Crinkle Cut fries, which were cooked just right. The "Arnold Palmer" was also good. Before we left I bought a chocolate shake to go. Very good, but kind of small for almost $6. Since we don't get downtown much it will be a while before we return. Thankfully, I already knew what I wanted before entering ... the menu on the wall is hard to see with people waiting in line. I got the Shack Stack with their Niman Ranch bacon. The Shack Stack consists of 2 of my favorite burgers (cheeseburger and 'shroom burger) into 1 big burger. OH MAH GAWD! So mouth watering delicious. It was fast food type food but it took a while to get our eat in order. The shake stack was a thin patty burger on a soft bun with a Full size portobello mushroom that is batter and fried filled with cheese. It was good, flavorful and a bit messy. Grab a couple napkins. The chicken stack was good. Crispy chicken on a soft roll. I tend to not like flavored mayonnaise but this one was tasty. The chicken bites are really crispy little nuggets of white meat chicken. They were full of flavor however, if you want ranch- it's not going to happen. This location doesn't have ranch for some crazy reason. Ranch is a staple in our house for my daughter and she was disappointed bc other shake shacks do have ranch. I went with 3 stars for this bc although it was good I won't be rushing back. (Which they may have even stolen from Shake Shack, lol). That, with the cheese fries...they have the best crinkly fries ever! But then, when you add their cheese to them...cheese fry heaven! Best cheese fries I've ever had! I've tried their burger, which was good too, but I think the chicken is where it's at! I also love their version of chicken nuggets! Delicious! I love Shake Shack! Second to In & Out, Shake Shack is my favorite franchised burger joint! The burgers were delicious and that Shack Sauce is something epic and too be appreciated. The staff at this particular location could use some education in proper bed side manner; ie common customer service, but I am not going to let them get in the way of this review as the food was epic. Double Shack Burger with extra Shack Sauce = Win Smoke Shack Burger = Win Shack Fries = Win My only knock is that Shake Shack doesn't have more locations within the STL! Nonetheless, if you are a burger connoisseur like I am or just looking to spice up your normal burger routine, located in the heart of Central West End, try Shake Shack - you won't be disappointed, better yet you won't leave hungry!
