It has been a year since my terrible tragedy with Shake a Paw. I have gone a long time without sharing my story, debating whether I should or not. After reflecting, I have decided I must.
I purchased a pomsky puppy from the Greenbrook Shake-a-Paw location in August of 2019. Our puppy appeared to be perfect- happy, energetic and playful. I had paid for the puppy half in cash and financed the remaining cost.
About a week after getting the puppy, we took him to our own veterinarian instead of one of the Shake-a-Paw "affiliated" vets. This was probably the best choice we made in this entire process. Our vet had noticed some upper respiratory issues and put our puppy on antibiotic for Kennel Cough, a common illness amongst puppies from a store. After the puppy did not respond to the antibiotic over 2 weeks, our vet became very concerned. Our puppy looked awful- his nose was crusted in mucus, constantly coughing and sneezing, had conjunctivitis and was extremely lethargic. Our vet told us of a rare viral disease called distemper- which is fatal in 90% of puppy cases. Distemper is very rare these days due to vaccinations- so we were told the chances were slim.
Our puppy was given a distemper test that was to take 5 days for results. However, at this point, our puppy was so lethargic and ill, we were told he needed to be taken to an overnight hospital for IV treatment. We had to go to NYC to do so, in which one overnight stay was upwards of $1K. Luckily, our veterinarian was equally as disturbed as we were, and reminded us of the "not fit for sale" policy that comes with purchasing a puppy. This would mean that Shake-a-Paw was legally obligated to cover any medical bills for an illness the puppy had upon purchasing. Our veterinarian confirmed that based on his symptoms, whatever illness the puppy had was present upon the date of purchase.
I called Shake-a-Paw the next day in tears. I explained the situation at hand and I received a call back from the owner. He was defensive from the start and was very intimidating- asking questions and expressing that there is, exact quote, "no distemper in my store". However, 2 days later we received the results that our puppy had tested positive for distemper. I shared the news with the owner and he gave me two options. The first option was to return the puppy and exchange him for a new one of equal value. This solution was so disturbing to hear at this time. Why would I return my sick puppy whom I had already formed a strong bond with? Not to mention they would have very likely put him down to save themselves the cost of medical bills. He also offered to have "his" vet take a second look at the diagnosis. This was possibly the most shady comment of them all. Why would his vet be more reputable than mine? I would not take the risk of bringing my puppy to this establishment that he clearly had questionable ties to. I looked up the veterinary office he mentioned, in which they received dissatisfactory reviews. This was not even an option in my mind. The second option was to keep the puppy and try to cure him on our own accord. I stated that this was the option I chose and he expressed that he would be "happy" to cover the vet bills, however, capping off at 2x the purchase price of the dog. For those who are familiar with the cost of veterinary care, that money would not go a long way. Might I add, we had already spent a large fraction of that purchase price the first night at that hospital. We had no choice at this point but to bring our puppy home since we could not afford to keep him at that hospital for multiple nights. We made our own treatment plan with our veterinarian and were able to give him the best care for 2 months post diagnosis. We did everything we could to try and fight to virus, but were unsuccessful.
The owner did reimburse us for every vet bill and the purchase price of the dog, however, as a reminder, this was not an act of generosity, rather a legal obligation. I emailed him to let him know when our puppy passed, in which he replied "I am sorry for your loss- he put up a good fight!".
There was never any contact afterwards nor was I ever offered a new dog or compensation of any sort. I was actually surprised the owner did not hesitate at the possibility of me sharing this story. I believe he created a narrative that he did all he could and this was an unfortunate accident. I am sure I will receive some sort of hostile response to this post. However, I have gone through a year of therapy from watching my puppy slowly deteriorate and die at the age of 3 months. I am forever disturbed by this experience and having some more mental clarity a year later, I felt it was necessary to share my story and not worry about the reaction. read more
