Hawaiin BBQ is a craving that comes up for me once a month and I typically enjoy ONO Hawaiian when I'm back home. Shaka was a new place for me but I must say that they delivered on my expectations. I appreciate the fact that they include sauces and utensils in the bag without having to ask as well. As for the food, here is what I ordered: BBQ Katsu Mix: Consists of 3 meats (which I will rate individually), 2 scoops of steamed white rice, 1 scoop of macaroni salad, and cabbage. Rice was simple and you can't mess it up. Macaroni salad was delicious and I enjoyed every creamy bite of it while pairing it with the BBQ beef. As for the cabbage, I must say that it had a strange flavor that I did not enjoy, it seems that it wasn't boiled the same way like most other Hawaiian places. Meats ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Chicken Katsu - Very crispy golden breading on this chicken katsu and tastes even better when it dipped in the accompanying sauce. I will note though that some parts of the chicken had fat. BBQ Chicken - Dark meat chicken that has been marinated in a BBQ-teriyaki tasting sauce which is then grilled. This chicken was especially good when dipped in sauce and eaten with rice. BBQ Beef - My personal favorite, chopped up pieces of beef that are heavily marinated and packed with flavor. I could eat this with the mac salad all day, thanks to the tenderness of this beef. Probably not the most popular item on the menu but it is a hidden gem. Overall ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If your looking for good and consistent Hawaiian BBQ, you should definitely hit up Shaka. The BBQ mix consist of chicken, BBQ beef and Kalbi short ribs. The beef and chicken are well marinated. Soft and moist. It's delicious! The meat here is def one of the better ones out there. Portions feel small though and location is odd. The lighter one meat one was just a single chicken thigh and all the rice scoops were small :( . Yummy yummy! We got the BBQ & Cutlet Plate + the Hawaiian BBQ Plate. Ordered inside for takeout but decided to dine-in on a Tuesday evening due to plenty of space. Friendly staff and short wait time (less than 10min) for freshly prepared food! The teriyaki chicken is by far the best item we tried! Superb, I never knew chicken thighs could be so juicy and flavorful that I would rank it over beef! Cutlet comes second - it is extremely crispy and well seasoned, and the beefs are also good but just not as good as the chicken and pork. Loved the teriyaki sauce, short grain rice perfectly cooked, and the macaroni salad went so well to balance the meats. Absolutely delicious! read more

This place was amazing! For such a new place, they are doing a fabulous job! The service was supreme! From the moment we showed up, they showed us nothing short of hospitality. They put together tables for us so our group of 10 could sit together. The food was delicious! The family meal deal says it feeds 4, but more like a family of 6. We had 2 adults and 4 kids, and lots of leftovers. The teriyaki chicken was bomb! I wish it came with more rice though. You get 6 small scoops of rice. If I lived closer, we would be back again and again. There is plenty of seating and family friendly atmosphere. I love that extra sauces are at your disposal. Very clean dining area! read more

Hooray for drive thru!!!! It looks like they are only doing to-go's but I'm so excited about not getting out of the car just to order and wait. They might have to ask you to park if you have a big order but they will bring it to your car once it's done. Usual Hawaiian joint but I've had a big lunch so I only ordered some apps. Musubi and Crab Rangoon which both are filling and tasty. Will be back again to order a full meal when I'm back in the area. read more

I am updating this review since 2019 because they so deserve a 5 star! Man, I sure do love this place. If I lived closer, I'd come here more often. Lol So I tried their Loco Moco this time along with BBQ +chicken combo with my husband which we always get when we come but Loco Moco was really good too!! Good patty, good gravy! And I sure do like their macaroni salad. So good. Another thing I found out that's awesome is that they do catering. Was in the mood for some island backyard grilling. Searching in Yelp found a few. Decided to go here. Didn't disappoint. The flavors took me back to when I was stationed in the island of Guam. Every Wednesday night in Guam we would go to Chamorro Village to enjoy the food and flavors I once again tasted tonight. I was so hungry I started eating but I remembered to snap a pic. I got the Hawaiian BBQ Chicken plate and it was delish! Great portion of protein and the sides paired well with the flavor of the chicken! The rangoons were a little cheesier than I'm used to but still paired well with the dish. Everything here is straight fire. Welby (Manager? Owner?) is super nice, he always remembered my to-go order when I worked nearby, making sure to give me a different Hawaiian Sun drink each time I visited. Portion sizes are big enough for two meals and the mac salad is the best in DFW. My favorites are the chicken bbq mix (katsu and bbq chicken) but my co-worker swears by the seafood mix (crispy shrimp, fish, and chicken) They have something on the menu for everyone, and I've never had a bad meal here. Katsu sauce and teriyaki sauce are fantastic, not too sweet with loads of flavor. They even catered my birthday party, and the price was so reasonable for 20 people. The catering order was super easy to schedule over the phone, and they had everything ready right on time for pick up. Welby and his team made it super easy to transport all the food with cardboard boxes to hold the trays up. My hot food survived a 25 minute drive without any spillage, and the mac salad was still ice cold by the time I arrived home. I ended up ordering spam musubi appetizer, 3 meats, a big pan of rice and of course, mac salad. The bbq chicken was super moist, perfectly seasoned, the kalua pork was so tender, and bbq beef was melt in your mouth good! All the meat came with some cabbage underneath to soak up all the delicious juices. My friends finished an entire pan of mac salad, and demolished 2 dozen spam musubi, and even with their huge appetites, we had plenty of meat and rice leftover for later. I would definitely book catering from them again. Shaka if you ever want to put in a location closer to the Allen area, I would be there every week! read more

I have been meaning to come to Shaka for a while. I went on a weekday evening around 6PM, and the wait was not long at all. They have a drive-thru, but a friend and I went inside to sit down and eat. They had limited seating, probably four tables (tables that seat 4, 6, 6, and 10?) and high-chair seating along the window, but we didn't have any difficulty finding seating when we got there. From the time that we ordered to when we received our food, I think it took roughly 15 minutes since they were cooking the food fresh. The service and worker who greeted us was very polite, and was the one cashier I noticed that was present the for the evening, who was efficient at getting orders out, especially since around 6:45-7:15, there was a huge dinner rush. I ordered the BBQ Hawaiian Mix Lunch Plate (~$13 post tax) and my friend ordered the chicken katsu (~$11 post tax). The BBQ plate was good, not the best I've ever had, but still good. It came with macaroni salad and rice. The meat comes on a pile of cooked veggies, which I thought was a nice touch! The chicken katsu came with salad, which my friend thoroughly enjoyed. There are self-serve katsu and teriyaki sauce pumps that you can grab yourself in small to-go sauce containers, which I really appreciated! I do wish they had napkins placed out though, but I understand why they may not because of COVID. Parking: they have a parking lot right in front, burning case they run out, they have more parking in a lot in the complex. It's not my favorite Hawaiian place that I've had, but I would go back and recommend it. read more

First off, they get my respect for doing drive-thru only during COVID. I hereby extend my middle finger at the entitled asshat who docked them stars for not having their dining room open, what a douchebag. But I digress. I have dined here half a dozen times or so and I always enjoy it. Mostly I order the Hawaiian BBQ chicken but their chicken katsu is also fantastic (just a little less healthy) and the short ribs are mmmmmm good too. I love the creamy macaroni salad more than I should given the calories but when I ordered online this most recent time there were options to shift the proportions of all the sides on the platters, ie "less rice more veggies" or what I chose, "no rice extra veggies". Hubby got no Mac extra veggies because he does not belong to the cult of macaroni salad, no one is perfect. The veggies in question are cabbage, cooked but still crunchy. I was able to split my Hawaiian bbq chicken lunch into two perfectly sized meals. In the past I used to get the mini bbq chicken lunch which is the right amount for one meal, and nice and inexpensive, but the only downside is you can't adjust proportions of sides on that. Since I doubt most people want to skip the rice like I do that is a killer deal. Anyway, I think the food is great, reasonably priced, and the owners clearly care about reducing pandemic risk to their staff and customers. So go get some great food today! read more

Found Shaka Hawaiian BBQ via a Yelp suggestion and decided to give it a try! We've been to Hawaii a couple times and really enjoyed the food there. Shaka did not disappoint! The Kalua pork, the barbecued chicken, even the macaroni salad (an island staple) had a very familiar authentic taste.....and it was wonderful! It was like a luau, sans dancers. LOL The setting is very casual and the prices were pretty reasonable. The only down side is that the restaurant is tiny and with social distancing there aren't many tables so you could show up with no place to sit. We'll be back soon to try the Moco Loco! read more

I lived in southern California for many years and loved L&L Hawaiian. This place is pretty much equal to that and that's not easy to do, I've tried a few Hawaiian places around and they haven't been very good, but this place was fantastic. I had BBQ chicken (Hawaiian style) with the Katsu and both were very tasty, tender with great flavor. The location can be challenge to find if you are coming south on 121 since the restaurant faces West -- so look for the Abuelo's and then turn in as if going to Abuelo's and then Shaka is located right beside/behind the Abuelo's in the same building. We called in and placed our order (note: please follow their instructions when it comes to picking up your order and do NOT be that person who gets into the drive-thru line and blocks everyone else because you decided to wait at the window even though your order wasn't ready yet). We got the Family Plate (great deal and enough to easily feed 4) with our 3 protein choices being Kalua Pork, BBQ Chicken, and Kalbi Short Ribs. I really had no expectations because I've never had Hawaiian BBQ, but I love all Asian food which I understand it is influenced by. We loved it so much we actually ate here two days in a row because it was that good. The first time, my boyfriend and I shared the Kalua combo with Kalua pork and chicken katsu, veggie spring rolls, crispy shrimp, and crab rangoon. Everything was amazing! Incredible flavor. The one and only Hawaiian food DRIVE THRU! Yeah! There aren't too many Hawaiian places here in DFW. I think have been to the other 3 places and they are pretty spread out. So we were really happy to find this one along 121. We are a fam of 4 so we had kind of a big order and they had us pull up to the front and brought it out to our car! Thanks! Some of us couldn't wait until the drive home to give it a taste. MAN the kalua pork has mad flavor and was tender. One kid ordered the short ribs, the other chicken. Whatever that marinade is on the chicken, it's the bomb. The kids really loved the macaroni salad. If you want a little healthier option, do think about getting the Aloha meal. Drive thru is open!!! Came across this delish find that comes with decent quality and amazing deals. I got the chicken combo for less than 10$ and shared it between my sister and I! Came with chicken katsu and Hawaiian bbq chicken on some steamed cabbage with a side of rice and mac salad. Breeding on the katsu was a little thicker but the chicken was still moist (yes moist) and the flavors were there! Rice was well cooked and mac salad was a plus too. Their service was nice and speedy. Their storefront is just around the corner of the shopping area and the drive thru is around the back so just a heads up on that.
