We recently had a great dinner at Shady Grove and as per usual, the meal was very enjoyable. Three of us had the Broiled Shrimp and the other had the deep fried Walleye, all were very good. We had a magnificent evening set up by the Shady Grove wait staff to celebrate my good friend WWII B24 Co-Pilots 101st Birthday. We were greeted at the door and they helped my buddy to his seat. Fawned over him in a polite way all evening to ensure he enjoyed his Big Day. We both had their famous French Onion soup, appropriate warmed breads and took advantage of a nice wine list. The birthday boy had lobster with sweet potatoes (must have), while I enjoyed the fresh and tasty Walleye dinner. Being from Washington State, must have Walleye. Sadly, we mentioned our experience to some friends and acquaintances over the weekend. We are not the only ones who LOVED the food/atmosphere m/menu but noticed the unprofessional manner of the female owner. I would hate to think her actions can negatively impact the business that much, but I guess her actions are not easily forgotten. So disappointed in the food. Prime rib was horrible. Burnt taste and very dry. I always order med well at another supper club in Miesville. When I mentioned it to waitress and she said you ordered it well done. For the price we paid it was not worth it. A little cup of soup and a couple tablespoons of sweet potato and one bun. The other relatives had same problem. Our bill came to over $100 for my husband and I. On top of the horrible meal we were asked to leave because they had another party coming in. First time visiting inside dining since reopened from COVID. All waitresses were wearing masks, but shocked that one waitress went over had her mask off admiring a baby up close hovering over parents. I think this would have been a time to keep their mask on Had the salmon with salad and wild rice medley with cranberries. Food was good Decided to have an after dinner grasshopper drink. Very disappointed in that. We have had these there before and we're delish, but this one was made with ice not ice cream. There was large chunks of ice in it. Who makes a grasshopper with ice? Do not judge a book by its cover. Shady Grove can go toe-to-toe with pretty much any place in the Twin Cities, if you ask me. This is my second time here. I think the first time was prior to me even being aware of what Yelp was. They are under new ownership since then, but it has not skipped a beat. Definitely spendy for this part of Sconnie, but oh so worth it. Got the scallops from the nightly feature menu this evening. It's been awhile since I have been to either of the coasts, but theses scallops are the best that I have ever had anywhere in the Midwest. Topped with a sweet glaze and fruit garnish. Perfection on a dish. Shady is dinner only as the sign says. Do yourself a favor. Make a reservation for a Saturday or Sunday night. Take a leisurely drive out and enjoy a first-class Wisconsin Supper Club meal. I, for one, will not be waiting nearly as long to go back for my third visit. read more

Celebrated my father-in-law's birthday at Shady Grove last month because we were so impressed by our anniversary dinner the year before. The table was adorned with birthday decorations and the service was incredible, as always. Our meals were outstanding and my FIL still raves about his prime rib and the chocolate tart. My dermatologist who lives in Excelsior MN told me about Shady Grove which is 70 miles away. You would have a tough time finding a classic old-style supper club with gourmet food within 60 miles. Fun atmosphere, great service but the food's quality is the real hero. read more

After driving 1 hour in a snow storm we arrived 45 minutes before the closing time. After waiting to be seated we were told that they couldn't seat us because service has ended. I could understand if it was 15 minutes before closing but 45 minutes really? read more

it was a wonderful windy early spring evening and we decided to take the 20 mile drive to experience this little gem of a supper club in WI. We were the only people dining that early on a Thursday night---we got there right at 5 so we had awesome service and they were very friendly-- They have your old school comforting supper club favorites like walleye, alfredo, shrimp, steak, etc. etc. They also have some seasonal chef-inspired features too. I decided on the chicken marsala with whipped sweet potatoes and it was very satisfying and delicious. The husband got the pork medallions and he enjoyed them but was surprised that when he ordered hashbrowns that they were just plain old hashbrowns with no onion-peppers-cheese nothing special to write home about. They have a full bar and some decent wine---I totally enjoyed my little spontaneous date with my man and on the drive home we talked about how contented we were with our meal and that it was a nice drive outside of town. Despite the shortage of staff that has infiltrated the workforce the team of Shady Grove still managed to shine during our recent visit. As an out of towner, I always preface things with, "For Ellsworth..." This usually annoys my niece, but this place is actually pretty damn good. During my last visit, I started with a creamy tomato dill soup, side salad, and a duck breast with wasabi potatoes. I enjoyed my meal with a glass of Pinot Noir, and had an EXCELLENT dinner. To top it off, our server was so nice and pleasant throughout the entire service. After we left the restaurant, my spouse and I kept remarking about the high quality of the meal. We were there last night, as always a quaint little Supper club, fairly busy, so reservations are important! We had the Shrimp starter, just ok for $12... I'll rate on a 1-5 scale for quality, in my opinion. I had the Au Gratins,(4) Onion soup (4.5)and the breaded Cod(2.5) it was a poor quality, tasted fishy, decent batter... the Cod at Legion in Red Wing (4.5) as a comparison! My Friend had the Salad (2.5) mixed greens, she didn't like it at all! She also had the prime rib, and it looked like it had been sitting in a Au Jus sauce it was brown, salty and just ok.. (3).. Weiderholtz , a (4.5) as a comparison! The Wait Staff, is waaaay to Friendly, almost badgers you to order, every 5 minutes!!! Move em in.. move em out!! I cannot remember that style of service, they just hover!!! They served the starter and immediately asked for the Entree order.. And what's with the how's it Tasting? question, after a first bite!! Very Rude, in my opinion, perhaps not intentional but nevertheless annoying as Hell! Don't go if you want to relax, especially if your not drinking! It's all about turning the Tables, we may have been there 50 minutes from start to finish. They saw my Guest was not (devouring) her entree and wanted to remove the plate.? With a Do you want a box??? WTF , You can't take a break, and relax, they hover like locusts!! My husband, son and I went to Shady Grove for Dinner on Friday night, and we completely enjoyed everything about our experience! Our dinner included: Bison steak with roasted yukon gold potatoes, Jumbo shrimp with sweet potatoes, (yummy) and my son ordered the homemade pasta! We had a most disappointing meal. We had reservations for 6. Got seated to have the owner we had an hour at our table. By 630 hubby and I were looking at the clock. Finally at 645 we got our food. It was ok.. inhaled it. Only to be told at 7 we could have table til 730. I told the owner we inhaled our food. I have stomach issues so I'm a slow eater.. I cut my meal in half to take with me.. wish when I made reservations they would have told us an hour.. I didn't hear anyone around us told they had a time limit..But in the end she was calling me crazy and putting her hands on me. Told me not to come back but told hubby he was welcome to come back.. I'm thinking she may have been on something. But in 60 years I've never been treated this way. Oh, we asked to pay the bill, I had my debit card out.. she crumpled the bill and threw my card at me saying.. I supposed ur going to leave me a bad review.. Took in dinner with two family members last Friday. I had the Friday fish fry (cod) with sides of sautéed mushrooms and asparagus. The fish was tasty and the vegetables fantastic. The other two members of my party had the Sirloin steak. Both were prepared medium and both entrees received rave reviews (perfectly cooked). I can't believe it has taken me so long to write this review. Reading John O's awesome review reminded me - The Shady Grove is one of my local favorites. I have never had a bad meal or experience here. I will often ask servers if the chef is interested in making up something that is not on the menu. Usually in nice restaurants, if they're not busy, they are happy to do it. This place always says yes and never disappoints. Go here. And enjoy the beautiful drive. My family went here last night to celebrate the birthday of my son, my grandson and as it turned out my son-in-laws promotion! What a great place! We started with an order of onion rings and cheese curds which came with catsup and a nice ranch dipping sauce. Both were lightly breaded and deep fried - delicioso and yum yum yum! Wonderful sweet onions and fantastic curds. I indulged in a couple rob roys (made very well) and a stinger after dinner! No judging please - we did have a lot to celebrate. My granddaughter and I had the grilled shrimp. Two in our party had the walleye and the other three had beef. Everyone was very pleased with their meals. The service was stellar and the ambience is old time supper club. My son indulged in a Brandy Alexander after dinner. He said it was fantastic but not quite as good as our neighbor makes - lucky us to have such a wonderful neighbor!! I highly recommend this place which is just a few minutes out of Ellsworth, WI. You won't be disappointed. Don't let the exterior turn you away. Go inside and you are in a whole new world of gastronomic delight! read more

I wish I could 4.5 stars. Like another reviewer, we were seated 30 minutes after our reservation time. The place was packed completely. (That says something about the place that is only open for dinner) We waited at the bar and took quite awhile to get drinks. There were two bartenders on duty and one didn't quite seem to know the ropes yet, they were quite unorganized. They were both extremely friendly though. One of the owners was in charge of seating. She was very apologetic about the delay. Once we were seated, our server was very attentive and prompt. All of our food was amazing. What's better is that they use local farmers and ingredients from their own garden. We had the artichoke dip, both had prime rib, and handmade ice cream. Everything was so very good I can't say that enough!! It was a conversation-less dinner because we were both so busy chomping away at the steak. There was a couple that was seated about 15-20 minutes before us, and their appetizers were mixed up with another table, and we got our entree before they did. I love this place but had one of the crappiest meals ever recently. It must have been a bad night for the crew but I'll think twice about a return. We sat at our table without menus for over ten minutes, our server was scattered. When the food did come we had to send the lobster back as it was like a toy lobster--made of rubber--and it took another 25 mins for a new one. By that time I'd finished eating. So that was great. Drove here from Minneapolis to meet friends that relocated to WI. First of all the décor and ambiance of this place is a rural supper club circa 1965. Everyone in this place the Sunday night we were there was retirement age plus. Overall our food experience can be described with one word: salty. We started with the calamari, which was fried, yet undercooked. Rubbery and bland...and I love calamari in almost any form. For my entree I order the Bison filet mignon. The dry rub they used was so salty it was the predominant flavor and buried the nice cut of meat. My wife had a pasta special which was also salt city. For desert I had a flourless chocolate tort with a jalapeno/raspberry chutney. I tasted no jalapeno in the chutney, which was the reason I order it. The heat and sweat sounded good, but no heat to be had. I also order a cup of coffee, which was the nasty Bun machine burnt variety. If you're from the Twin Cities skip the drive here, it's not worth it. read more

Our group all loved our entrees and I cannot say enough about the Morrel mushrooms and asparagus starter dish. The restaurant interior is pleasant the staff friendly and efficient. What an awesome find! After years of visiting the area, I recently visited Shady Grove for the first time. The whole first page of the menu is the Chef's specials that change daily or weekly at the most. I tried the sunburst squash soup and it was unreal. It contained some chipotle peppers that added a great level of smoky spice, and it was topped with toasted and spiced sunflower seeds. For my main dish, I had the bison filet mignon, which was delicious. With an entree, you get two sides, so I tried the mashed sweet potatoes (yum!) and house salad. Their homemade Italian dressing was divine as well. I would highly recommend this spot. It's wonderful, with generous portion sizes, and better prices than neighboring favorite Harborview in Pepin, Wisconsin. read more

We got our meals to go and the female owner thought it would be so much better if we ate there on their grounds. We ordered eight different meals: the burgers were good, the salmon was good, The pastas were were OK. The green beans were horrible. Since this is a supper club and we know the prices are higher we expect to love our food I guess. The menu is very select also. We have been to so many other supper clubs that have a lot more to offer and the food is excellent. We probably will not be back to this one. read more

$25 bottles of Procesco to begin and the best creme brulé I've had to end...and everything in between. It's more expensive, but the ingredient quality and preparation makes it stand alone in the area. We've always had excellent service. The menu changes (we enjoyed oysters on valentines day!) and highlights local and seasonal offerings. the duck breast is a favorite entree and the calamari and portabella strips are favorite for appetizers. read more

Shady Grove is so special that I'm writing my first public restaurant review a week later--not because I wasn't inspired to do write it sooner, but because a week later, I'm still thinking about our lovely dinner there. We (my husband and 14 month old baby) went for dinner on a Wednesday evening at about 5:45 with a reservation. When we arrived, they had a nice table set up with a high chair already in place. We had a calamari appetizer with Asian slaw (baby's first calamari--loved it!). We frequently order calamari and it was my favorite version since J.P. American Bistro closed in Minneapolis. Our baby is an adventurous eater and enjoyed the spicy sweet potato soup--which was too bad because I would have loved to have more of it. She also enjoyed tastes of my delicious chicken spinach lasagna and my husband's walleye. All our meals were very good and worth a return trip on their own, but the real highlight was the service and atmosphere. Our waitress was attentive and responsive, but far better, she made us feel welcome and, by the end, like family. I don't expect that from every restaurant experience, but from a Wisconsin supper club? It was exactly what I didn't really know I always wanted. Ditto for the red leather chairs with huge metal tacks and the wood paneled bar. The owner was also warm and inviting--and not just to us. I could tell she genuinely cared about her guests and several of them were obviously repeat customers who cared about her and the restaurant in return. It really was a quintessential and yet authentic supper club experience and one which I hope we can repeat soon. My only request? A baby diaper changing table. I hesitate to mention it, but a mom has got to ask. P.S. I took home the chocolate caramel tart and it was so full of sticky, chocolaty wonderfulness I don't want to even talk about it in case I give away my weaknesses. read more
