We ordered the hurricane platter for two and it was absolutely delicious we also tried their clam chowder which was delicious the meal came with salads and they were huge. The ranch was homemade and the lettuce was crisp and fresh. Our walleye shrimp and scallops were pan fried and I believe it's called blackened seasoning but it was delicious and the meal was terrific. Price was a little expensive but not outrageous it was very reasonable for the food that we had portions were very generous. 10 out of 10 will be going again. read more

To begin with...the hostess was consistently asking if we needed our table even though it was a half hour before our reservation, we wanted a drink at the bar first. We were a party of four that use this restaurant often. And over 30 years have never had a bad meal or service. Until last night, they only had three waitstaff for a full house, Saturday evening. Our server was working very hard, but it took over 30 minutes to get our drinks over an hour more before our food came, sporadically at different times...then two of us had horrible meals,unedible, my blackened cat fish was charred all through solid crisp black, the asparagus was shoestring unchewable, one meal came cold. New chef? Inexperienced? New bartender? Not enough staff assigned? We were there over 3 hours. Our server was very nice and reimbursed me for my meal. I'll try there again and hope this was a one time occurance. read more

I have to say I love LOVE this place! The food is usually good, very consistent. My men folk love the fish. The drinks are fantastic, service excellent, atmosphere plus. But MY favorite part is the bread, pickles, olive oil, balsamic vinegar they bring out - love their salads and soups too. This place has a casual Nick Nolte, John Steinbeck's Cannery Row feel to it so jeans are acceptable. I hate to admit this but It's the first time I ever had pan fried walleye and I wasn't disappointed. My wife had beef tips that were so good I'm encouraged to try to make them at home. Good selection of tasty seafood, a few steaks, homestyle soup, and a few tasty appetizers. Enjoy a casual atmosphere, but dressing up a bit would not feel out of place here. We experienced very friendly service. The bar is a nice place to stop for a before or after dinner beverage. Adequate seating for about eight customers at the bar. I kept seeing the sign "Good food. Poor Service" while we were on the way for tacos in Arcadia and one day just decided to make the drive and try Hillside instead. I'm so glad we did. We made our second trip up tonight. Both times they were reasonably busy, but able to get us in. Today, we were seated next to a woman wearing so much perfume that there was no way we were going to enjoy our meal. This isn't something I normally complain about, but it was so bad that my nose started getting stuffy. The host was incredibly accommodating when I quietly asked for another table and moved us to the other side of the room. Love the bread. The drinks are always made well. Our servers have been knowledgeable and able to make recommendations and answer all questions. The food is amazing. I have been not just satisfied, but thrilled with everything we've tried there. Hopefully we'll get to try dessert one of these days. read more

This little joint on the side of the highway was a nice find. The ambiance was fun and the place is a cool local spot. The server was very nice and helped with our order. I had the seafood platter and my wife had the walleye. Both were very good and made fresh. The bread is very different in that it's drenched in butter and Parmesan cheese. Do not drive by this little gem! Fantastic food selections and everything we ordered was expertly prepared. The scallops were so flavorful and good sized. The walleye and catfish were spot on and so fresh. I saw another yelper recommend the in-house made blue cheese dressing and so glad I did. It had a great blue cheese pungency without it being too much. We started off with the cheese curds and they were lightly breaded as well as nice n hot when served. And bread with pickles? The best restaurant in Winona, Minnesota is located in Wisconsin. Just a 5 minute drive once you're across the bridge, you will find this little hidden gem somewhere between Fountain City and Galesville. It looks like nothing on the outside but don't be fooled! So many of the best places are like this. My friend and I dined here on Friday night. The bar is very large and fully stocked. Reservations are a definite must, the place was packed! We got a booth and shortly afterwards our server arrived. Cheese curd appetizer was good, but I've had better (Wason's Supper Club a few miles away has amazing large cheese curds) When in Wisconsin do not miss out on the cheese. They bring out bread and pickles to the table and we had salads to start with. We both ordered the Ribeye and seafood combination plate. The steak came out perfectly grilled with excellent flavor and it was so large I was actually shocked. It looked bigger than 12 ounces. It was better than a lot of steaks I've had at fancier restaurants in Minneapolis. Now - the scallops! I got mine pan-fried and they were some of the juiciest, most delicious scallops I have ever had. I couldn't believe it. They came with some wild rice pilaf and drawn butter. Our Martinis were fabulous. I got a Chocolate Martini and my lovely friend got a Caramel Apple. We both exclaimed with wonder at how delicious they were. The Wine list is extensive and featured some fantastic choices from local wineries that I have been to such as Wollersheim Winery and Elmaro Vineyards. Prices are high for the area but on par with Twin City prices, perhaps even a bit lower. No complaints whatsoever. Everything from the food quality, pace of the different courses and service was just wonderful. It was a real treat dining here. I will return when in the area! read more

I also got the coleslaw which was great. It's the cream style coleslaw and very good. The garlic mashed potatoes were fantastic, too. Very big portion sizes. They also start you off with a large amount of garlic bread that is amazing! There is balsamic and olive oil on every table, which is great for the bread. They also serve that with pickles, someone called it weird, but I loved them. They are like buttered, dill pickles. Yum! The decor is very nice inside. It's a pretty fancy place for the area. I've driven by this place 1000 times during the day and always alone. My wife and I were in town and going out to dinner so I suggested Hillside. We arrived to a packer parking lot that my crew cab long box truck had some issues finding a spot that I didn't block the lane. We got inside and were told it was 45 minutes to an hour wait. So we sat at the bar and had a drink. They have a nice wine list and superb after dinner drink menu. We were seated in 25 minutes to a nice booth. We had a very friendly waitress who was very familiar with the menu. I ordered the pan fried walleye and my wife had the filet. We got a huge salad that was very good and the entrees soon followed. The food was delicious and hot. The service was great. We then ordered a Brandy Alexander to say it was out of this world is an understatement. We will be back this is a great place. read more

Usually this place is one of the best in the area.... We stopped in on a Monday night with reservation at 5:30pm. The place was not very busy, but everything seemed to take a long time. Our server had a few issues, but in her defense was very nice. The scallop appetizer was delicious. We all ordered different items. The ribeye was cooked good, but no flavor or seasoning! The other steak ordered at our table was horrible, but we didn't want to say anything because everything was a mess. The jumbo battered shrimp were wonderful. The cod was just ok, a little greasy. My wives salad had a hair in it... The cajun shrimp appetizer was not good at all, but the waitress took it off the bill which was nice of her to do. We never asked for that or even complained for that matter. She just noticed we didn't eat any of it. We all thought they just had a bad night. Every business has one or is entitled to a bad service once in a while... Maybe the main cooks were off after a busy weekend being it was a Monday.
