    Mediterranean Bowl sans sauces

"As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again." (Scarlett O'hara) Don your best green-velvet curtain dress and pack a healthy appetite that Ashley Wilkes would approve of when visiting the Scarlet Kitchen. Fiddle-dee-dee! You'll never be hungry again after eating here as the portions are huge, and the desserts will call your name if there's an ounce of space left in your stomach. Located inside the historic St. James Hotel, this restaurant is a beautiful upgrade from the old Veranda. The casual classy ambiance is perfect for a business lunch, a gal pal brunch date, organizing a Tokyo prison break with Bill Murray, or enjoying patio views of the riverfront with Colin Jost. The globally-inspired menu changes periodically, is sourced with local ingredients, and includes vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. My favorite dish on the current menu is the Curry Mahi-Mahi. It is moist, flaky, flavorful, and mildly spicy, paired beautifully with a ginger rice. The Mongolian Beef in Green Curry is also wonderful, with a spicy kick that Genghis himself would be proud of! Overall, the Scarlet Kitchen is a great place to dine no matter the occasion. But as Mammy said to Scarlett, "Now don't eat too fast. Ain't no need a having for it come right back up again!"

Been here a few times with my dad and friends (brunch). Love the food and the river view! The outdoor patio is top notch if it's good weather. The service is friendly and always prompt! Make a reservation if you plan on visiting during a week night or weekend. All the food has been large portions and fairly priced for the quality. The only thing I would say is annoying is that the restaurant is hard to find.

Anika was full of smiles as she greeted us. Lovely spot overlooking the river in the beautiful St. James Hotel. No matter what we prefer, options never disappoint. Today 3 of us shared an awesome pretzel, Caesar Salad with shrimp, Poke Bowl with Ahi Tuna and Chicken Wild Rice Soup. Doesn't get any better than that.

As I arrived at the Saint James Hotel I found my way going up some stairs from the parking garage and ended up at Scarlet. The outdoor area is beautiful as it overlooks the river and train depot. I made my way to the bar and was taken care of first by Elliot who was a fabulous bartender making sure my cut never ran dry. I later arrived and the hostess Aubree was fantastic. After a long day, it was great to have someone lighten the mood. She assisted me and made my time at Scarlet memorable. Gabby the bartender was fantastic later that evening she went over the menu and recommendations and I was in the mood for local wine. So she assisted me in picking something enjoyable. Kate who was also behind the bar from time to time made the evening enjoyable with her kindness and knowledge. I had a fabulous evening at Scarlet thanks to all the amazing staff. The next day I stopped for breakfast and Kelsey was my server. I ordered the benedict and and glass of orange juice and a Prosecco. The serving size was very large and I could only eat half. The service was prompt and courteous. There is ample parking in the lot as well as street parking. Note. They dont serve alcohol till 8am so no mimosas till 8am.

Beautiful restaurant with good food. The soup needed a pinch of salt but it was delicious. The service needed to be worked when entering the front door. This restaurant is in the beautiful historical hotel in Red Wing, MN

I ordered the charcuterie board and an iced tea, just before sunset. What a beautiful setting, outside on the patio. A wonderful view of the sunset. The charcuterie board, which I've ordered at several different restaurants, was excellent. A super nice blend of different cheeses and meats and sweet. $25 seems steep, but it well can serve four people as an appetizer, or more than enough for one person as an entrée. I also had an excellent server. The inside restaurant is very well decorated, and would not disappoint.

We stayed at The St. James Hotel years ago and remembered it fondly so wanted to go back to enjoy a meal there while in town. We were extremely happy with our lunch choices! We ordered the crab Rangoon appetizer with extra pita and then just split a fish sandwich with fries. Both were done perfectly, and served promptly. So happy to have another fond memory here!

Looks great, right? It's to be a dinner salad...not a pear salad with lettuce sprinkled on top.

This place is horrible. Spend $20 for a giant salad, and you get nothin. So if you get takeout make sure you check the food beforehand. I have no idea what spent money on.

Scarlet Kitchen & Bar is located in the St. James Hotel in downtown Red Wing. There is some street parking, but as this was a sub-zero January night with snow on the ground, we drove into the attached parking garage. It is not a straightforward parking garage but labyrinthine, requiring low speeds and care; judging by the scrapes on the ceiling, more people should pay attention to their vehicle height, too! We found a spot and had a very short, cold walk to an elevator. Scarlet Kitchen is on the first floor. My husband arranged this dinner date for the two of us on my birthday. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, making a point of saying "happy birthday." Our server was Anna. She took great care of us the whole time. We ordered some drinks and the cheese curds to start. These curds were fantastic with a perfect hot squeak. The Sturdiwheat batter was delicious. The housemade cranberry dip was a nice change from what other restaurants serve with curds. My husband ordered the steak and fries. I snagged one of his fries--wow, was it good! Strip isn't my husband's favorite cut, but the meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned for his preference. I ordered the salmon, which was served on pearl barley with vegetables. Everything was delicious--a meal that felt indulgent yet healthy at the same time. Because it was my birthday, the dessert was included for free. I had my choice of the chocolate cake, creme brulee, and hummingbird cake, and I went for the chocolate. While we were waiting for that, my husband requested a whisky listed in the menu, but he was soon informed that they were out. So, the cake. Let me tell you, as a passionate home baker, this thing was GOOD. I could tell it was made fresh in-house. The chocolate and cherries were vibrant. Great frosting. Sweet but not overkill. Seriously, people should go here just for cake. Just as I was reaching for my coat, our server Anna returned. The whisky had been found to be in stock after all, and she offered us a serving on the house. Wow. We sat and enjoyed that before braving the cold. This ended up being the perfect birthday dinner. Excellent food and outright stellar customer service. We'll happily dine at Scarlet again.

    Chicken wild rice soup
    Tracey F.

Were with some friends that wanted to check out the St. James Hotel and we were feeling like an afternoon pick-me-up so we wandered into Scarlet. We were all intrigued by the mimosa list. I ended up having the watermelon one (called Worx). We were all also a little hungry and got cups of the wild rice soup, which was fabulous. The only real disappointment was the amount of time it took to get our bill and pay. We had been done with drinks and food (and had indicated this to the server) for about 20 minutes before we could actually settle up and leave. Lots of good looking stuff on the menu, so if I'm in the area again, will definitely stop in again!

    Biscuits and Gravy. SO DELICIOUS!

I consider myself a "obsessed foodie " so I was pleased when Cory the chef came out of the kitchen and walked around the dining room. We were having a cocktail at the bar so we waved him over to ask what he recommended . I took his advice and ordered the scallops. They were cooked perfectly. Very tender and paired really well with the roasted corn and bacon. The whipped feta was very cold, which was interesting, but the flavor was tangy so it offset the richness of the bacon and scallops. The beef tenderloin was delicious cooked perfect medium rare. The broccolini was a little tough and the blue cheese sauce could have been a little thicker. It was kind of runny. I will be back to try more items on the menu. Excited the restaurant is open again.

There were rolls and butter pats, and a whole array of salads that felt like the same mix you'd find at a great Midwest potluck. I sampled several, but I absolutely LOVED the broccoli bacon salad and the Snickers salad! My husband opted for the simple lettuce salad with croutons. Service was consistently slow during our visit, just as a matter of timing--they looked short-staffed during the lunch rush, and the workers were being run off their feet! They were moving nonstop. I had broiled fish with shrimp and a baked potato. Perfectly cooked, flavorful fish. I loved the breading on the shrimp. I had butter and sour cream along with my potato. I didn't get seconds. My husband had the standard fried fish, shrimp, and fries, and really enjoyed them, and he did request a few more pieces of fish. They came out, piping hot. I want to come back here sometime and try the pie!
