My best friend and I drove down from San Francisco for a two day getaway. We waited for the cable car- like elevator to take us to the restaurant. We were greeted and seated right away with no reservations on a Monday night. Our server was decent. Inside was cozy, with a romantic tropical feel, creative decor with multi floor dining rooms capturing views in every room! We ordered light because we had eaten a few hours prior and ordered the calamari. It was fried to perfection with a drizzle of Parmesan cheese. The sauce that accompanied this dish was cocktail sauce, Tartar sauce, and an orange flavored aïoli, which was magnificent!!! The bacon wrapped shrimp was cooked perfectly!! After our appetizers, we ordered the Jack Daniels Mud Pie with ice cream, toffee, and chocolate with a side of whip whipped cream. It was 10 out of 10. I especially loved the little chunks of toffee and caramel to sop up with the ice cream. The bread pudding was disappointing. I guess we expected traditionally made bread pudding. It just didn't meet our expectations. They used strawberry sauce instead of fresh strawberries, which we anticipated When we return, we will try more items on the menu and try a few choices from the wine selection !! read more

Really beautiful views and decor along the descent to and inside the restaurant. There are so many themed areas (garden room, river side seats, outdoor patio) Overall food was decent. Halibut was overcooked but the steaks were very nice and tender - truffle flavor comes through in the gnocchi too. Drinks are also quite tasty - the coconut lavender lemonade is something I've never tried before! Starting with a grand entrance by taking the super cute cable car down to the restaurant which puts you in the right mood to enjoy your time there. Unfortunately the food and service didn't live up to the hype. The service was extremely slow . We waited a long time just to get acknowledged and another long wait just to get water. Our strategy was to put our whole order in with the drink order so that we didn't have to wait so long to see our waiter again. Shadowbrook does not need any Michelin star because it is better culinary experience than most 3 Michelin star restaurants. The restaurant geography (built on a slope) and setting alone with graded construction so that each level has a stunning view. The menu is "Extensive" with a cornucopia of dishes that are cooked so delicious. I had the steak and my wife had the prime rib. The meat was tender. We also ordered the calamari appetizer which is served with a coleslaw side and two different sauces. The prices are ridiculously inexpensive in a era of obscene inflation. Also their cocktails are made flawlessly. I prefer to dine here than in any laundry in Napa. read more

The food and ambiance of this restaurant is amazing and unique. From the start, you take a small old-timey funicular down from the parking lot at the top of the hill down to the front door of the restaurant. In this ride, you see the whole of the restaurant spread across multiple buildings and levels, as well as the river abutting the lowest level of the restaurant. Inside, it has a feel like a mix of a chalet and a classic steakhouse. There are many cozy tables in different spots (like in a nook on the landing of a stairwell) as well as many dining rooms. The food was outstanding. We got the calamari (which was perfectly fried and had nice, tender, thick pieces of squid) and the wedge and Caesar salad to start. For mains, I went with the slow-roasted prime rib. It was perfect: cooked to an exact medium rare, served with delicious mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, and a flavorful horseradish cream. I've eaten prime rib often in my life, and yet this one was notable. read more

If you're reading this and on the fence, I would recommend going with a different option unless the specific ambiance is really important to you. This is a restaurant you have to go to at least once in your life. Can't recommend enough! We got a steak and the pork chop. Both of us agreed it was the best we have ever had, along with their clam chowder also being the best we've tried. Took my husband here for his birthday! The ambiance deserves a 5 ! The drinks very good- service - we had clam chowder, Cesar salad to start off with. They were very good. I ordered the shrimp scampi with linguine and it needed some flavor - my husband had the NY steak with fries and asparagus and the steak was a disappointment- a bit overcooked and lacking taste - the asparagus were very good ! You can either take the gondola to head down to the restaurant or take the scenic way down. We opted to take the gondola to get down! Warning: There will most likely be a line/wait for the gondola, and make sure you press the button for it to come... everyone in line (including us) thought it was automated. Everyone waited like 5 minutes for the gondola to come back up and we collectively figured out that we had to press the button for it LOL All of the staff members were so welcoming and helpful! As for food, everything was delicious here. For appetizers, we got Bacon-Wrapped Prawns and these were flavorful and great to start our dinner with! We wanted to try the Blackened Lamb, but sadly they were out when we got there (we had a reservation for 8PM). Instead, we got the Blackened Prime Rib and Shrimp Scampi. Both were so good, but my boyfriend and I enjoyed the Blackened Prime Rib more! It was tender and the spinach and mashed potatoes were also good! My boyfriend usually doesn't like mashed potatoes, but he said he really enjoyed this one so that definitely means something!! With its stone, wood, and lushly clad interior, it almost gives off a Jurassic Park meets log cabin vibe, kitschy but fun. The menu has a variety of meat and seafood options, the classic surf n' turf, and rotating weekly specials. I've dined in both the lounge/bar room and the dining room, and both have different menus, with the bar offering some more casual bites. The food is pricey, but that is to be expected for a more upscale spot with the views and proximity close to the water. The food is always good, not amazing, but pretty solid. If I wanted a great steak, this isn't where I'd come, but if I wanted to show some out-of-towners a fun spot and get a good meal in the process, this would be a great option. Celebrated our 30th anniversary with a trip to Monterey. Decided to cap it off with a late lunch at Shadowbrook before returning home. Didn't realize that seating options would be limited if not making reservations in advance, since we planned on being there around 3:30, I made them on my phone with little advance notice. Since my wife was planning on dinner with her sister in just a few hours, we ate lighter than usual for us. We were given a window seat with a view of Soquel creek in a smaller but very comfortable dining room. We loved the fried/baked crispy parmesan crisps and additional anchovies on the caesar salad we split also the fried artichoke hearts. I had the blackened lamb, and my wife the sirloin and 8 oz lobster tail. Everything was delicious and perfectly prepared to order (medium rare). We didn't have time for dessert, and since waze showed that 17 was badly backed up, and that 1to 92 was a breeze, we took the beautiful coast highway home, nearly no traffic at all. We can hardly wait for the next special occasion, maybe my birthday in April, so we can bring our kids here to experience some Shadowbrook magic. read more

We had a fantastic time on our post Valentine's date last night. We made a reservation in their website a week in advance. They accept walk ins but you have to wait and there's no guarantee you'll be seated in their dine in area, but they have a bar and they have some tables in the bar, I don't know what food they serve there, we didn't try it. First, they have their own parking. The walk from the parking to their hillavator or cable car wasn't that far. You can either use the stairs or the hillavator/cable car to go down or up. There was a wedding when we came so you can book parties,too. Also they are wheelchair friendly. The meal was so delicious. The ambiance was so romantic, we had a view of the river beside the restaurant. Our server Matt was so polite, kind and knowledgeable. We ordered the baked Brie for appetizer-it was a 5/5 Then we ordered the shadowbrook house salad 3/5 We ordered the 14 oz prime grade New York steak 4.5/5, it was a 4.5/5 because it came with French fries and 3 pieces of asparagus, it would have been a 5/5 if it came with baked or mashed potatoes. The steak was so soft, flavorful and very delicious. Also we ordered the non alcoholic nada colada 5/5 The bill was not bad, it was $212 with tip and 20% gratuities. They charged 4% service charge. Way overhyped! Unfortunately, we got a table that was right near the service station. Out server as friendly and definitely knew the menu so that was a plus. We got the bacon wrapped shrimp appetizer and the shrimp were very overcooked. For entrees we got one special, beef Wellington and the gnocchi with filet add on. The Wellington is two mini 3oz. The first one was very rare. And we love a medium rare steak but this was bloody. We cut in into the second one and it was literally purple and not warm. I think my gnocchi had been sitting waiting for the Wellington as it was cold, meat quality was low and the whole dish was over salted, They did take off the Wellington but basically we paid $130 for two overcooked shrimp and a martini each. Ambience was nice but dated, server was friendly but honestly the food is not good and I think they rely on a long reputation and the venue itself. We wanted to at least take the cable car back up. Host station was abandoned and the bartenders could care less. We figured it out but was annoying given we were told "the hostess will help you". We came here to celebrate our child's birthday- we thought it would be a fun, unique, and special treat to have dinner here. The overall experience was great- we stayed about a mile away so we were able to arrange for the taxi to come pick us up. And the location is amazing- either walking down the stairs to the restaurant or taking the tram down is very unique. You feel like you're eating in some faraway exotic retreat. Once inside, it has a great atmosphere as well. Rustic, romantic, homey, fancy, retro... it checks a lot of boxes in terms of the feeling it evokes. I think it helps that they have a suggested dress code that keeps things feeling classy. There are so many little nooks and seating areas, there is a different vibe depending on where you sit. We got the prime rib since it seems to be known for that and the kiddo got a cheeseburger. The prime rib was good. Solid but definitely not to die for. Mashed potatoes and creamed spinach that came with it were good as well. The cheeseburger was way overcooked, crunchy on the outer rim, I didn't even want to finish it. For dessert we had a raspberry pie with a scoop of ice cream, that was a winner! Overall, the food is decent. If you come here, the star of the show will really be the experience, setting, and atmosphere. The service was attentive through the meal, the staff did a good job. The potatoes au'gratin were very good, and the broccolini was al dente without being bitter. I tell you hwut, I cleaned that plate.. dang near licked it.. the chowder was good.. not as good as the best which was Lamda Lamda Clamda that one year at the chowder festival.. that steak was cooked to perfection, I haven't had a good steak in a long time, so I was very pleased. Food was mediocre at best and not very impressive. Wife and I shared a wedge salad that was great except the rock hard, overcooked and tasteless cubes of pork belly. Should replace with what a traditional wedge salad comes with, quality smoked bacon. My wife ordered one of the special's which was a Chilean sea bass. Very dry, overcooked and tasteless for such a delicate and moist white fish. The sweet plum sauce was too sweet and did not go with the rest of that dish. I ordered the blackened prime rib. I had the better of the two meals, but again it was nothing extraordinary. Glad we went and experienced such a pretty and special place. If we go again, it's not for the food. read more

I like the idea of the elevator going down to the restaurant but if not then there's also a cute stair way that takes you to different directions to explore the outside of the restaurant. We had a party of 6 so there was a lot of food. They all thoroughly enjoyed their dishes. Our server was just ok. I saw other servers and they were a lot friendlier but our was just there to take our orders. That, I thought, took away from the experience a little bit. read more

The service was good but we sat in (what felt like ) a secluded area of the restaurant. But....This place is gigantic & has so many rooms or seating nooks! Party of 2 had no wait on a Friday at 4. We opted for the heated patio which gives you a nice view of the river. Service and food was spectacular! Calamari had a nice crunch and came with a variety of dips. Clam chowder had a lot of sustenance, not just liquid. Wood fired pizza could do no wrong. Shadowbrooke has become a new tradition for us for Valentine's Day dinner. It was a restaurant that was on my bucket list that I wanted to try and I was not disappointed. Ambience is casual, however, it can be intimate and romantic, depending on where you're seated. The first time we came, we were seated at the bottom level, which gives you a good view of the river running alongside it. This time we seated on the middle level. The top level of the restaurant has a dining area with a bar area, and there is also a private room dining area that seats about 14 with its own bar. They also have an outdoor dining area on the patio on the top floor. Employees here are always welcoming, friendly and execute their job roles very well. Servers are very knowledgeable of menu items and when suggesting menu choices they give you thorough descriptions of how the food is prepared and ingredients in them. I have now been twice to Shadowbrook in the last 12 months, and I look forward to another visit sometime. Though I enjoyed myself the first time, I enjoyed myself and especially the food, more on my second visit. Of course, the theatrics and fun that are couched inside the more sober surroundings are a good reason to come. Certainly the 'Angel's Flight' style cable car, known as 'The Hillivator' allows for a splendid view of the entire area. This includes the Soquel Creek that will eventually spill out into the ocean. It does get chilly at night -- at least in April -- so dress accordingly. OK. Once you're seated (you DID make a reservation, right?), take your seat at one of the many rooms here. There is also the front room that includes the bar. I could imagine sitting there sometime, but not for the first time or so. Way too much to take in with the views. We had some slightly unconventional choices - yet everything was on the menu. But really. The Wedge? It's a classic, all right, and Shadowbrook really makes it memorable. 'Baby Iceberg lettuce, grape tomatoes, Baker's Bacon lardons, house-made croutons, Danish blue cheese dressing'. The bacon lardons are a wonderfully savory and salty counterpoint to the basic of basic lettuces then brought together with the blue cheese. So good. It's a huge salad, too, so very shareable. The Prime Rib is a stable here. It would not be mistaken for Lawry's, however, it is still good. They offer it 'blackened,' which means prior to serving, it gets seared in a pan with pepper. This is the way to go. The first time I came here, I got it the regular way. That was fine -- and of course the horshradish that comes with all Prime Rib will give you lots of flavor. However, 'Blackened' elevates (or should I say 'Hillivates') this dish to much more satisfying taste. We also ordered the Pork Chop. 'HONEY GLAZED, BONE-IN PORK CHOP 14oz pork chop, char-grilled, sweet potato puree, diced "Baker's Bacon", roasted Brussels sprouts'. Winner. As random and seemingly ordinary a choice Pork Chop may have seemed, the Pork Chop was the dish of the night. It was perfectly cooked, savory, juicy and all the trimmings that accompany it make for a fantastic (and very large) entree. We finished with the Chocolate Meltdown (with Vanilla Bean ice cream). A great send off into the night where you may return via the Tram, or brave the many steps back up to the parking lot. However you go, Shadowbrook more than lives up to the hype. read more

This is my second visit to Shadowbrook. My first was great, however, the food was just ok. In my opinion my the location and views were pretty but the place lacked in food quality. This time around was much better. Service was great and of course the beauty of the restaurant is without a doubt the main attraction. For cocktails we enjoyed a guavatini and a Moscomule. The guavatini wasn't spectacular, I say pass on this and try something else. For appetizers we tried their baked Brie with jalapeño jelly. Delicious! I wish I could buy the jalapeño jelly, lol! We also enjoyed the artichoke dip. For our main course I had the gnocchi with steak bits. She had the salmon. We both enjoyed our dinner. Overall this place is unique and worth the visit! read more

A perfect restaurant for a special occasion! It had a relaxing, resort-like atmosphere that made for a very chill and enjoyable time. One unique part of the experience was taking a ride to get to the restaurant--it made the whole outing more memorable, not just for the food but for the scenery and sensory experience too. Grilled Wild Swordfish: This was a limited-time menu item. The thick-cut swordfish steak was served over a bed of refreshing green rice, and the lemon sauce complemented it perfectly. New York Cheesecake: It came with seasonal wild berries. The berry sauce wasn't too sweet, and it balanced the richness of the cheesecake really well. Came here for my 30th birthday after seeing the trolley on social media, and I have to say--it was even more than I could've hoped for. The experience itself is so unique. The space feels like it's frozen in time in the best possible way--like stepping into the 1950s. From the layout to the wallpaper to the vintage photos, everything adds to the charm and makes the whole place feel special. The service at our table was amazing. Dimitri was our server--super knowledgeable, attentive, and gave fantastic recommendations. You can tell he really knows the menu and cares about the guest experience. And the food... wow. Truly out of this world. The pork chops and filet special were both incredible--perfectly cooked and filled with flavor. We ended with the molten cake, which was also delicious. My only critique would be the front desk experience. We had a 2:00 reservation but ended up waiting about 15-20 minutes past that. There were four hostesses up front, and unfortunately they seemed more focused on chatting about their personal lives than managing guests. For a fine dining restaurant with a strict dress code, I would expect a more polished and professional first impression. Tried the baked Brie this time- tasty with the jalapeño jam but a bit sweet with the jam and maybe rind was in Brie because had strong flavor? Still good though- glad we ordered. Couldn't pass up thé gnocchi again and it was fantastic! Just the right amount of truffle oil! Also the pork Osso Bucco- the real star of the night! Compliments also for the size of the wine pour and the tasty house made chocolate truffles so we could still celebrate our occasion while we were too stuffed for a larger dessert. James provided exceptional service to us at Shadowbrook! We stared the meal with cocktails and the calamari. For dinner I had the shrimp scampi and my spouse enjoyed the filet with vegetables. We had some wine with dinner and finished up the night with the chocolate cake topped with vanilla ice cream. The vibe to the restaurant was amazing and I recommend taking the gondola down to the restaurant. My one suggestion would be for the restaurant to have a wider wine by the glass selection. Be prepared to spend $50+ a person, and to have an incredible evening! Will definitely be back again. read more

I've been eating at the Shadowbrook since about 1973. My wife and I since 1983 ! It's always been a great experience. Once again, we had another great experience last night thanks to Eli and the staff. The food is excellent. We always have a great dining experience! This place is very beautiful and romantic! Shadowbrook requires a reservation to enter and enjoy the amazing food and the dazzling views. We got a Kids pizza, Beef Wellington, Clam chowder, and Artichoke hearts (vegan). The pizza was very cheesy and light. Their Beef Wellington was good for its size and had good mash potatoes. The combination of the clam chowder and the artichokes heart tasted amazing with the smooth soup and the crunchy artichokes. read more
