Wowza!!! We selected this restaurant to celebrate our Slugs graduation and it did not disappoint! The serves and staff are AMAZING! The interior is cozy and warm. We were seated by a window with a bench seat and chairs. Very inviting. Let's get to the very best part-FOOD! Unfortunately we did not get to try the Focaccia (out) or the lamb(out). Our seating was later in the evening so that is understandable. We dined in lasagna, Sirlon tips with roasted carrots and a burger. All were amazingly flavorful.

We loved Oswald. We had heard it referenced as a classic spot in Santa Cruz, so it had been on our list for a while. The burger was, easily, the best burger I've had in Santa Cruz. They cooked it perfectly medium rare, and the add-ons to the burger were wonderful. The Dungeness crab was solid as well (though in my opinion a bit overpriced at $36 for the quantity). Would definitely recommend as a whole!

Food is really good here. Hands down best bistro style burger around here. Drinks are solid too. Happy hour is 100% worth it. Service is great and the bartender cares about making good drinks. Not a huge fan of the location, but I'd imagine it will get super busy in a year or two once those apartments are complete.

In downtown Santa Cruz, there's a lovely restaurant that makes wonderful food. It was my daughter's choice for her 20th bday family dinner. We were sat promptly, brought our bread appetizer and drinks once prepared and then the order was taken. It was a Friday but despite it being full, it wasn't noisy with loud people. It was very relaxing. I had the best duck breast and ate so much, we couldn't get the chocolate soufflé. I'll have to go back for that some time.

Summary: decent food, good drinks, attentive staff, needs more ambiance Details: Oswald has been around for 30 plus years so you know they are doing some things right. Most weekdays, it's full of locals who have their favorite tables or eat at the bar. Weekends the tourists take over. I suppose it's like an old pair of jeans -- comforting and not surprising. Heads up: the house made focaccia s quite good but an extra charge. Some severe explain this and others don't. A few items from my recent visits: Halibut served with lentils and rice. The pesto really makes the dish. This one wowed me. Mushroom bread pudding. Sounds odd, tastes good. By all accounts, this is their most popular dish. Lasagna (beef) served with an unusual salad they label ozzie (not sure why). The lasagna is a comfort dish. Fine but not special. Fried chicken: I'm a bit of a fried chicken snob. This one is middle of the road. The crust needs extra seasoning and the bird was a touch overcooked. Generous portion though. The desserts are all pretty good too. The almond custard torte was flavorful but not too heavy. Amusing note from the menu: "Please note that we do not have a hard close time. We close at the discretion of our owner. " Oswald's may not be fine dining but you'll be fine dining here.

We completely stumbled onto Oswald because we were in the area and had a terrible experience somewhere else. Oswald saved our night! Oswald had the ideal blend of sultry ambiance, swanky decor with local artwork and cool lighting fixtures, great cocktails, delicious bites, and too-notch attentive service! Our server checked on us so much that I knew she caught whenever we finished a plate or a drink because she'd swoop in to take it or offer something else. She was fastastic. Customers seemed happy and the noise level was medium. It's not a family/kids place; more of an adult vibe, just fyi. I can't wait to return to Oswald for a full dining experience.

Lunch today with a friend to celebrate my birthday --we met in the middle and ended up at Oswald. I hadn't been here in over 10 years and wax looking forward to trying it. One thing about laid back Santa Cruz is well, it's way laid back. The restaurant was mostly empty today. Rather sterile interior. Our server was the bartender, bus person, food server -- I didn't see any other staff in the restaurant the whole time we were there. Felt a little strange but he did a good job and was helpful. The food: speaking just for me I thought it was pretty bad. I had fish and chips. No self respecting Brit would have eaten one bit of what they called, Fish and Chips. Funny I looked at the current reviews and pics and not one picture of P and C-- I should have guessed why. Ok here's the bottom line -- 5 very small little thin pieces of fish deep fried in a non traditional batter. Literally zero fish maybe 1/8 inch thick 4-5 inches long and 1 inch wide. Zero taste. Zero fish and batter that looked like it was cooked 3 days ago. Fries were ok. Just to be fair, my friend had the fried chicken sandwich that came with a slab of cheese melted on top (?) and said it was ok. The extra salad side looked ok too. I know it's not fair to judge the whole restaurant on one dish so I am reviewing just my meal. I won't be running back but maybe you'll have better luck.

We went for our anniversary and the food did not disappoint yet again. We ordered the halibut and a Caesar with trout. Both were scrumptious and we were members of the clean plate club. Service was good as always. However, our cocktails were good but not of the caliber that we usually experience there, hence the one star deduction.

The servers are fast and make sure you have everything you need. It is a very nice place to sit and have a quiet meal.

There were combinations I hadn't seen before and it seemed that the chef was bouncing around the globe choosing ingredients to combine. The result? Every bite is a sensation in your mouth! Different spices, flavors and textures combined to make you slow down and savor the experience. We shared a salad and two entrees (pork and filet) and tried to make sure we saved room for dessert since I had read that the owner was master. Every dish we had we enjoyed from the first bite to the last! And the desserts? Holy smokes! The chef is known for the chocolate cake (which was divine and very rich) but the cheesecake was another level! It was like eating creamy clouds of deliciousness. The service was spectacular! In a world where customer service is sometimes hard to come by, VIM knocks it out of the park. Our waiter, Cole, was incredibly knowledgeable, personable and attentive. I have read a couple reviews knocking the ambiance or configuration of the restaurant . There are limited tables and a lot of space between them. The ceilings are high, also giving a lot of space to the restaurant. It definitely has a different feel, but what it does is allow is for you to talk to and actually hear your dinner companions!! That is nearly unheard of in restaurants now, where they are optimizing every square space by cramming tables so close to each other that you can barely hear yourself think. I appreciated that as an additional part of the wonderful dining experience. You are best to get a reservation. There is a bar that I believe takes walk-ins, but when we got there at 6:30 it was full. We will definitely be coming back!

The food was delicious, great flavors and unique combinations that excite the palette, the watermelon was a big highlight for me. In addition the desserts are amazing, the head chef was a pastry chef I am not mistaken and it really showed! Everything was so tasty and well made. This will not be my last visit, I look forward to coming back hungry for more!

My entree I ordered the beef check gnocchi, they make their pasta in house and this was so rich and freaking tasty! Absolutely similar to a short rib. 10/10 recommend!! My husband ordered the CA strip loin, cooked perfect medium served with a garlic aioli and crispy potatoes. I got to try his and his was equally fantastic! My mother in law ordered the rock cod crudo and she shared with me as well, the chili oil really came out in flavor in the dish, it was plated beautifully as well. I think this would be a great shared appetizer for groups too. Father in law got the fried chicken, and WOW - an entire HALF chicken! So large, local chicken, fresh and flavorful. Desserts we had the pistachio pana cotta and olive oil cake, the panna cotta was FANTASTIC. You should absolutely order this if you have room! The green sauce was light but paired really well with the potatoes. I loved how fluffy the interior of each potato was. We also had the steak tartar with house made potato chips. The potato chips were so light and thin, and the steak tartar was super soft and salty from the fish eggs. I almost forgot we were eating raw beef and thought it was raw fish. For entrees we had the lasagnette & beef cheek. The lasagnette's flavor was reminiscent of american chili. Not bad but not my favorite flavor. The beef cheek was my favorite dish of the night! Sooo tender and the sauce it was in was so buttery. The gnocchi it came with was really soft and almost tasted cheesy. The food was good and fresh, but I feel that every dish ran on the saltier side. I'd highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time for convenience. The place itself is so cozy and the vibes were so refreshing outdoors during sunset. The servers are attentive. Food takes a bit longer to come out but it's because everything is being prepared fresh. The place is pricy but it makes you full! My friends and I each paid around $47 for this meal.
