I wish they had half star options because I would give it a 3.5. Out server was nice and we got served right away. My bf got the lunch chicken teriyaki meal and I got the bogo sushi rolls . They have very minimal options for fried sushi rolls so I got the salmon roll which was fried and the dynamite roll which was basically a California roll topped with something on it. This is my FAVORITE Thai restaurant anywhere. The food is consistently delicious, the sushi is great, and the Japanese fried rice is so good! I also love the Thai Basil Beef, the Samui Seafood (my FAVE) and the fried ice cream is a treat! Don't bother with the spring roll appetizer--it's super tiny. Shaba Shabu I love you! I chose this restaurant because it was convenient to Trader Joe's. And I wanted to try it. So my son and I walked over. When I first walked in I was so impressed with the restaurant and I wasn't expecting the ambience and look. When I walked in there was no one there to greet us and when I looked to my left the owner came over and greeted my son and I. He was really nice, I made sure it was something on the menu for my small son and luckily they had chicken satay. Which was great for me because I wanted sushi! When we sat down we were greeted by the server. She was okay. She didn't seem very happy. Which was fine because I didn't have much time to be chatty because I was kind of rushing. I ordered water & my son a cranberry juice. She brought it immediately. I ended up ordering sushi and chicken satay and it was good. The bathroom was good. And the restaurant is huge! It was an average Thai experience. We chose to sit at the bar so we could watch basketball, I was surprised as to how cute this place was inside. I started off with a water and hoppyum IPA. We ordered the gyoza followed by the beef panang curry and chicken cashew nuts both with side salads next. Both the Thai and Japanese menus were on the smaller side. No sure why we never checked this place out before, but last week after grocery shopping, I picked up some sushi for lunch. We tried the summer roll, eel roll and some kind of awesome tempura veggie roll. I love tempura veggies and so those in a sushi roll was a real treat. It was the mixture of textures combined with the dipping sauce. The summer roll was really good an filling. Super glad we ordered. Definitely, going to try once the open back up. read more

The only con here is that i waited too long to give this place a try. I mean where do i start ??? It's located inside of a busy shopping area so there's plenty of parking but it's always a busy area. The inside of the restaurant is very modern and they have a bar lounge and seating area that is perfect for quick bites and meeting up with friends The service here was pretty good and the food was really great. I came here with my work team to celebrate a birthday during lunch. I will say it was longer than an hour for the lunch so this isn't a location for a "quick" lunch. I love that it's Thai and Japanese food all at one spot. We shared sushi and it was amazing. They have a buy one get one free option on their sushi rolls (Good luck trying to decide on just two). Why is it called Shabu Shabu, when it's not on the menu. A Thai restaurant without chilis. Cold tom kha. Thai Basil chicken was just over cooked glop. For some reason the stir fried chicken was grilled first, sliced and then put in the wok. What I just ate in no way resembled Thai food I've had any place else, and not in a good way. Tried this place during Triangle Restaurant Week. First of all, I really appreciate that they offered more than two options for entree on the TRW menu. I went with family and we got to try several different things. The miso soul and ginger dressing salad were pretty good and decent portions though the salad had quite a lot of dressing on it. Of the Japanese and Thai sampler appetizers, the Japanese one was definitely favorited by everyone. For entree, we tried shrimp Pad Thai, Fuji roll, Sumo roll, and Shaba roll. The Fuji roll was absolutely amazing! It makes sense that's their best selling roll. The sumo roll was good and very crunchy. The pad Thai and Shaba roll were pretty okay too. But keep in mind, this is not a special sushi place. On their regular menu, they had BOGO sushi and daily lunch specials which were all great deals! We were all impressed with how nice and modern the place was. Very spacious too. One odd thing we noticed was how heavy everything was---from bowls to the cube water cups to the metal chopsticks. read more

This review is an average of my two visits to this place. On my most recent visit, my wife and I had miso soup, Tom yum going soup, Pad Thai with shrimp and pineapple fried rice. The miso soup was your typical soybean broth and the Thai soup was well balanced in that the lemony taste, from lemongrass, wasn't overpowering the other spices which is a mistake that is commonly made in many places which specialize in Thai cuisines. The Pad Thai had the classic Thai taste of sweet, sour and salty. The pineapple fried rice could have used a bit more seasoning and the flavor of the pineapples was not quite emanating off the dish. All in all, it was a decent experience. On my previous visit, I had the BOGO sushi from their sushi menu. It was my best sushi experience in Raleigh to date. A perfect marriage between the sour and salty flavors. Some sushis like BK rolls offer pieces of shrimp along with the sushi. How cool is that? Overall, an amazing place for BOGO sushis. Quick review: amazing sushi (probably top 3 I've ever had), amazing Thai food, great atmosphere. For the long-winded: I am labeling this place as Wake Forest Road's hidden gem!! Went in not expecting a ton (only because it was a last minute decision and the reviews on here are surprisingly low), but left feeling happily full, impressed, & excited to go back sometime!! Food was PHENOMENAL- we got a Thai dish, the BK shrimp, and sushi rolls. It was all incredible, but especially the shrimp I mean MY GOD!! So so good- breaded and smothered in the best sauce! The sushi was huge and fresh. Probably some of the best you'll find in the area! I was also impressed with the wine list. And best of all- the prices were great, you truly get WAY more than you pay for! Servers were attentive and helpful. On a Friday night it was busy but quiet and the perfect spot for date night with the low lighting. Parking is easy right outside. Bathrooms were clean! Highly recommend!! That was weird considering the lady was serving the couple beside us. She did pour us beer but she didn't seem happy to do it . I was confused why a waitress that was serving tables was serving us when the bartender was fully capable. I really wanted to leave but he's a lot me relaxed about stuff and we stayed . The sushi was ok. Nothing to brag about . I ended up coming here to grab lunch last week and to try it again after a few months . I got the jasmine fried rice. It wasn't great either . I came here for a post-exam lunch. Shaba Shabu is a great place for lunch. They have daily $5.99 lunch specials and also buy one get one free sushi rolls (range from $7-17). I ended up getting the Diablo and Fish Lover Rolls. They were both good, but not great. Fish quality seemed decent and portion sizes were good. The sushi also came out quickly, which was another plus They have about 50 different types of rolls to choose from. While variety is good, choosing from 50 can also be a little difficult. Oh well, first world problems. Another plus is their draft beer selection. Visiting North Carolina for a few days, it was nice to try some local beers on draft. They also have nightly drink specials. Overall, Shaba Shabu is a solid sushi option. The interior decor is also nice and modern. Of course it's a Japanese-Thai fusion restaurant, so don't expect the most authentic Japanese fare. A lot of the rolls are pretty "Americanized", but I am not hating on that. I'm sure there's something for everyone. *3.5 stars* read more

Catching up on reviews. This was for a visit in September '14 I was very excited to find a restaurant that offered shabu shabu in the area. It's one of the things I really miss from the Bay Area, CA. Unfortunately, this place did not meet my expectations. Value $25 for the cheapest meat option (NY Steak). My friend and I opted to try the kobe style beef for $37. You get one small platter of meat and some veggies. I get that this area doesn't have many places that serve this kind of stuff, but I'm used to paying $18-20 for a bigger portion. $37 puts you in the range of AYCE places in CA. Quality The beef was ok. Not as marbled as you would expect from a kobe style beef. Dipping sauces were good. Service Nothing outstanding to call out. My pot was not heating up very fast, and the waitress misunderstood me when I tried to tell her and turned the heat down. Discovered 10 minutes later when I was trying to cook beef in warm water. Misc. The pot doesn't look like it was sitting on an induction style stove. Might have been the reason for the heating issues. The other thing is that the cooking pot was so far in front of us that we both had to stand up in order to reach into the pot...a minor issue but was very weird. The one thing that I really enjoyed was the banana tempura a la mode. Can't really go wrong with a fried banana topped with green tea ice cream. I might eventually go back to try the sushi, but it's hard to justify when there are so many other restaurants in the area to check out. read more

WARNING SUSHI CONTAINS GLASS If I could rate this restaurant NO STARS I would, but yelp doesn't go lower than 1 star. I found a piece of glass the size of my pinky nail but a little longer in a piece of my sushi roll. It was in my mouth!!!! What if it had shattered??? (Update as of Sat 27th 2018. The owner has reached out to me and offered me complimentary dinner. I have yet to go and take him up on the offer. But I appreciate the effort.) The owner didn't even have the decency to not charge us for the meal or at the least provide us a discount. They still charged us for the sushi that had glass in it too. I discovered the glass piece by accidentally bitting it when I put the roll in my mouth. Luckily it didn't shatter, but it wasn't great realizing that it was in my food. It did ruin my evening. They gave us a replacement roll which was actually worse then the first one. I didn't eat it bc I lost my appetite after the incident but my brother did eat the roll and told me the replacement roll sucked. The waiter said the owner was angry on our behalf and for our troubles we received a free slice of cake (similar to one I could buy at walmart). No discount btw. It's very unacceptable to find an object that doesn't belong in food like GLASS. Not to mention that a few of the dishes the food were served in were chipped. I would never serve food in damaged or broken tableware; that is unprofessional and in some cultures considered an insult. Chipped dishes should have been a sign of what was to come that evening. Although The only thing was the waiter has excellent service. Also the food that didn't have glass in it tasted alright. This place is ASS and is a scam! I've ordered and eaten here plenty of times and service was usually decent. This last time I placed a to go order of three meals, $20-30 each. When I get the food home, each bowl has half the portions they have ever had. I called over 30 times the night of the issue, no answer. I call first thing the next day, speak to a manager named Price. He took my information and informed me that it would be taken care of and I will be compensated. Cool! I call tonight to redeem, and Price proceeds to tell me "Theres is nothing we can do, check your meal next time before you leave." WTF we spent almost $100 for half the amount of food, told we would get taken care of, and then pretty much SLAPPED in the face. Don't waste your time or money there. I work in this plaza, and i have enjoyed eating lunch there a lot. Iv worked in the plaza for 3 years and would eat here b4 i worked over here. Over the past few months i have experienced a durastic change in the way iv been served and seen the staff treat other consumers. Today i am beyond offended by my experience. I was the first person in, i normally take advantage of the bogo deal. Im overly polite, but it didnt matter It seemed like my waiter was annoyed i wasnt getting more? Only thing i can come up with why i had to ask for a refill on my water, after waiting a but of time hoping hed catch it...and then also had to ask for my check and to go box... after a bit more time from another employee. . then the ticker when i asked to have some soy sauce in my to go box i was told yes but they'd have to charge for it. 75 cents After i just dinned for probably the 50th time and had all the free soy sauce with my food but if i wanted to enjoy it with my left overs i had to pay lol ???
