I enjoyed picking tea at the Tea emporium. The display for smelling the different tea varieties as well as the sliding shelves of canisters make the shopping experience quite easy. For a small space they are able to house an extensive variety of loose teas with the cool sliding shelf unit. I'm not going to give this loved tea store a terrible review, just commenting on my experience. First off, the people that work here are awesome, incredibly hard working and knowledgeable. It's very cramped in there so they are running around helping people as they have all these tins and you have to look at then and choose what tea you want. They then package it for you. I purchased 5 different kinds. I've tried 2 of them now (Red Chai and Hibiscus). I had them steep more than the 7 minutes, in fact both have sat in there way longer. It just tastes like watered down tea with hardly any flavor or smell. I usually get organic tea in the bag from grocery stores that tasted much better so I won't be returning. My daughter has a tea party coming up which is why we came here, but after spending $50 on tea and filters, I feel like I wasted money as it's not tasty. The experience is cute though. read more

Shab Row chic. Warm and inviting. Unique and cozy. This is my go-to self-date spot. Aside from the extremely cozy atmosphere, the staff is extremely informative and helpful. The tea options are in labeled vials and organized by tea-type in a dresser-type drawer. I have spent more time smelling the different types of tea than I care to admit... an olfactory haven. They always have options available to taste in the small shop. As a teacher, my personal favorite tea is the immunity blend tea. It is phenomenal and you MUST check it out! If you're into flavored teas, they have many options in addition to your traditional black, green, and herbal varieties. One of the best parts about the Tea Emporium is the upstairs (if you're not afraid to climb a fairly steep staircase). They have a small sitting area above the main shop that accommodates approximately 6-8 people. There is also a small bathroom upstairs for those of you who drank too much tea. One tip for visiting the Tea Emporium, ask the employees about possible tea-blends. They give wonderful suggestions and are super nice! read more

Despite being the only customer in the store, I was apparently imposing on the three sales clerks there at the time, none of whom had heard of the tea I was looking for and all of whom were sure they had never carried it. The first time I came in, I expected the store to be like it's sister store next door, Frederick Coffee Co, but with tea. Instead, the shop's focus is on selling loose teas. My knowledge of tea is that I like Earl Grey in the morning and chamomile at night so the enormous selection was overwhelming. However you're encouraged to ask questions and play around with the displays. Diana has been working on all of my visits and she's great! She's knowledgable and friendly, and keeps her cool when it's busy. And it can get very busy since every single tea can be brewed to order as a single cup, hot or iced. Besides tea, there's a small selection of pastries for sale, as well as vintage teapots and accessories. There's a very small seating area upstairs so this is not the best place to come with a group (though there is plenty of outside seating). I would this place 5 stars if they had a sampler package of some sort. It is very overwhelming coming into a store with a gazillion different teas. I love tea but I am not familiar with a lot of them. I am a beginner tea-drinker so having a sampler/starter kit makes the experience less in-your-face and more relaxing and enjoyable. The place itself is lovely and has a lot of personality. They have a record playing soft, calming music. When you enter you see the canisters of teas and to the right of that you'll see teas in test tubes. Instead of opening up the cans of teas you can explore the plethora of teas in the tubes. Open them up, examine them, smell them! Really neat way to make the tea accessible. The gentleman working that day was very nice as well. He probably noticed that we looked overwhelmed so he went ahead and gave a quick overview of the store. They also had tea tasting up in the second floor but we weren't able to try them due to time constraint. They also had steeped tea in the merchandise/hardware section of the store. This place alone makes the drive from the DC area to Frederick worth it. They have every tea you could dream up, a cozy place to drink it, and startlingly low prices. If you've been buying tea from Capital Teas or Teavana, you need to stop. This place is better and more cost-effective in every way, even after you factor in gas. They always have a few teas out to sample, too, which is nice. You can order tea to go or drink in the store, including tea lattes (except on saturdays). The place is organized like a library. The teas are kept in test tubes from smelling, and there are drawers that come out of the wall with the meticulously organized teas. On the walls, there are much larger tins for buying bulk. The last time we were here, we bought a lot of almond rooibos. It was so great that we bought even more this time. It's $3/oz, and one oz makes about 7 cups. We also tried some new, interesting flavors, like a coconut cream flavored white tea. We are excited to have more of it! Give us a few months and we'll be back, Frederick! read more

Love this little tea shop in downtown Frederick! It smells wonderful the moment you walk in and the teas are arranged by type in test tubes to smell. We brought my mother in law this past weekend during their first Saturday tea tasting and it was very impressive. We both loved the chai and the carrot cake seemed to be very popular. The Shab Row Tea Emporium is part of a group of sister businesses, independently owned and operated by the Winders. They strive to provide the most extensive list of highest quality tea in MD and also make it 'exciting' (to not make drinking tea a pretentious activity). There was a very sweet employee in there who gave a little run-down of the little store - there were vials on one side of their whole collection, where you can pick up the plastic vials with the stoppers and sniff away on the blends (whole leaf loose leaf teas); if you cross over, there was also a shelf of local honey jars, baked goods, and tea pots and accessories. Some sampling of the teas were available to give you an idea of the blends that they feature. Upstairs is a little lounge with some chairs where you can enjoy the tea that you purchased and/or do some work. In addition, if you bring your own 'jar' to fill up on their loose teas, you save an additional 15% off of your total purchase :D Custom blending is also available, which I thought was pretty neat. The store itself has a little patio so you can also drink your tea and/or have your treat al fresco. If you're curious or just a tea lover in general, check this really cute place out :D read more

I want to live here. Mind you, I feel like Gandalf the Earl Grey as I carefully worked my way through the shop. But the energy is beautiful, the saleswoman was brilliant, the teas!! OH, the teas!!!! The Buccaneer Black seems to be their most popular blend...and I see why!!! They have soaps, honey, rolled tea balls, loose leaf, spoons, infusers, pots, everything you can think of!!!!! Also, when I asked the saleswoman for her advice on which infuser would work best for the teapot I described, she honestly told me which one would work best. I know because it was the least expensive one they sell. And she honestly answered my query about whether an infuser I fancied had issues with leakage due to the size of the holes. Pretty little packaging for the teas.....tissue paper around my infuser.....I will be back every time I am in Frederick! read more

I stopped by The Shab Row Tea Emporium briefly on my way home from work, as I had read they had recently opened. I love this little place! After visiting many tea rooms and discovering all they sell is a lot of tisanes/herbal infusions a few greens and blends, and providing me with blank stares free of charge when I inquire about any first flush Darjeelings, I am so excited to find this place. Enough that I actually am taking the time to add their business to Yelp - I want them to stay! :-) Possibly my 5 star rating is partly due to my excitement that I may not have to buy all my tea online any longer, so please forgive me for that. While smallish, the interior is attractive with all that they have clearly labelled with test tubes of samples to inspect. There is a seating area upstairs, as well as a few tables outside to linger as you enjoy a fresh brewed cup. They have ice tea of course, and I am led to understand they will help you try any tea iced if you so desire. But best of all, they had real tea and the woman working there was knowledgeable. And there was definitely eagerness to make your visit worthwhile. It really was a nice selection of Darjeelings and Oolongs and Greens from what I scanned during my short visit, and I bought a current crop Darjeeling (which is terrific). The only thing missing was a personal favorite, a Ceylon known as Vithanakande, and they seemed serious about checking it out when I suggested it. We came here when it just opened and instantly feel in love as were huge tea drinkers, and we've been coming back almost every weekend since. It's a very quaint little shop and in the back they have test tubes filled with lots of loose leaf teas. Once you choose the teas you like you can either buy them by the ounce or have them make you a Pot or a cup or hot or iced tea. It's great to sit outside on the patio on a warm day and enjoy some iced tea (ginger pear/peach are the best) or upstairs in the little seating area. I walked in her today when I was in town during First Saturday. This shop is absolutely lovely, and a very nice contrast to Voila, the other tea shop in downtown Frederick. The store has three rooms. The tea is in the back room, and upstairs there is a tiny sitting area to sip and enjoy tea and snacks. I was extremely impressed at the presentation - there is a wall of tea in canisters. There is a rack of loose tea in test tubes so you can smell sample the tea. The offerings were also extremely impressive. I walked away with three different teas that smelled amazing and of very good quality. There was a huge selection of traditional teas, and an equally nice selection of blends. I bought a caramel apple that smelled more strongly of caramel than any other caramel tea I've ever smelled before. They have a selection of organic, fair trade, and kosher teas too. The staff are very knowledgeable, and I wish that it hadn't been as busy so I could have really chatted with the woman who was working the back room. I did tell her my trick of putting chili powder into lapsang souchong. The clerk put my pouches of tea into the cutest drawstring cloth bag printed with the shop's name and logo. I hope when they get their website up they list all the tea ingredients up there, so I can cross-reference. I like keeping track of what is in each of my teas. read more

As a frantic tea fanatic, I can safely say that this is a fantastic place for anyone who is hoping to dive into the world of tea! The building is quaint and rustic, and it seemed as if there was only one employee in the shop. She greeted us kindly and asked if we had been there before, then directed us to some free tea tastings and the back room where rows and rows of "tea" test tubes were held. Every tube held tea leaves for you to smell and sniff to your heart's content! I believe I could have stayed there for 30+ minutes to whiff every tea available. They have a wide assortment of black teas on the top shelf, and oolongs/greens/white/herbals on the bottom. They also had little descriptions of the tea flavor/aroma (which was very spot on for every tea I sniffed). One gripe though: there was another lady perusing the black teas, and since the oolong shelf is right underneath, I could not look at the other teas until she left. Next, my friend and I ordered a pot of tea to enjoy in their upstairs sitting area. There aren't many tables, mostly just armchairs and it is a small space. We had the Jin Xuan Milk Oolong, and it was buttery and delicious! It was perfectly brewed and we had quite a large pot for only $6. In fact, I loved the tea so much that I bought 2 oz. to take home ($12/oz). Overall, I had a lovely experience. The staff was nice and helpful, and the shop had a huge assortment of teas as well as tea utensils and teaware. I will definitely be back soon! read more

So adorable! They have two large pull-out trays full of loose-leaf tea samples in large corked "test tubes." The tubes are all organized by type (black, green, herbal, etc), and you can smell and inspect to your heart's content. The price per ounce is also on each tube - prices range from less than $3/oz to close to $20/oz for the very rare white teas, but most teas are about $3-$4/oz (and you can usually make about 7 cups of tea/oz). When you've made your selections, the gals will measure out the tea from large tins. They also sell new and vintage tea sets, local honey, and various tea accessories (strainers, etc). They also have a tea room upstairs and outside, but I haven't eaten there in person yet. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Frederick. read more

I went to Shab Row to find my boyfriend's sister some tea for her birthday. The man working was very kind and informative. He gave me time to mosey around and examine almost every variety of tea. When he noticed I was feeling under the weather, he made me a cup of tea to help me with my cough. What a lovely place! I went into Frederick Coffee Co. for lunch, which was delicious, but also very busy at the time. I really wanted a quieter spot to sit and relax so I ventured next door. I am glad that I did! There is a shop downstairs and a tea parlor upstairs. I asked for a basic green tea and they provided exactly what I was craving. I was in Maryland for a wedding and found myself exploring downtown Frederick. Shab row is a cute area located off of the main Market Street. Shab row Tea Emporium is a charming little tea shop. You are welcomed in by the aroma of all different types of tea. Any tea accessory you need is available for purchase in their front area. I explained to the shop employee Nada that I am very particular about my tea. She brought me into the back area which was a bookshelf style display of hundreds of different loose teas. She really took the time listen to what I like and helped simplify the process. Another thing that I found super helpful was the fact that she went over the brewing instructions, and even provided me with a reference card. It is refreshing to find that their staff is so knowledgeable. Whether you want to sip on some tea at the shop or try one of their blends, this is an awesome place to check out. read more

I love this little tea store. I could spend a long time smelling all their blends in their adorable little test tubes. The prices are very reasonable and all the staff I've encountered have been very friendly and knowledgeable. I love the selection, I'm always finding something new to try when I stop in to get more of my favorite blend (The Buckaneer Black Tea, it's sooooo good.) What a great gem added to the downtown area of Frederick. We missed their grand opening, but were able to go last weekend. I enjoy my tea, but am more of a coffee drinker. The selection was overwhelming, but they had it organized well. One can smell test tube bottles of the mix to decide if they'd like to buy a couple oz or have a cup upstairs. We bought cups to take upstairs, which I definitely recommend doing. I had the English breakfast which was very smooth. I was able to get 2 cups from the one bag. My cousin, who is very familiar with teas, loved this place. She enjoyed her jasmine green, which was fragrant, but not overpowering. The min amount you can buy loose to take home is 2oz, price varies per tea as well as the number of cups from the amount purchased. The gentleman working there when we went was very knowledgeable. My S.O. Enjoyed his very much as well. If you'd like food, just take your cup of tea next door to the Coffee Co., both owned by the same people. I can't say I will be going here to purchase loose tea to take home, but I will definitely pop in for a cup. I hope they eventually offer an afternoon tea service (using local foods?) because I can only imagine how fast they would expand by doing that. read more

Don't waste your time. Given I love tea, my wife and I tried this spot even though I'm fairly loyal to Voila! This seems to be a half-baked attempt to copy them. If you're going to sell tea, you should probably know how to brew it. The samples didn't taste very good and the brewing instructions they provided with my purchase were incorrect. They don't give you proper packaging so that the tea stays fresh. And in comparison, their prices are a bit higher. I bought a rose tea that frankly tasted artificial. It appears the owner (who also owns the coffee shop and fudge shop across the street) is just trying to capitalize on the tea market without really knowing or caring about the tea business. They seemed to have some flavors that they are already phasing out. Didn't they do their homework before opening? Oh, one last thing! I saw a cute little vintage teapot in a consignment shop on Patrick Street. I almost bought it but for some reason, I changed my mind. The same teapot was here!
