Hameul Pajeon (Seafood Pancake) - A seafood pancake with vegetables is presented on a white plate, accompanied by a side dish of corn salad in a small metal bowl.

I was so surprised to see that an SGD opened up in Madison. I came with two friends at around 1:45pm on a Saturday and it was packed. We joined the waitlist and were 11th in line so we weren't sure if we'd get a spot before the kitchen closed at 2:30pm. Thankfully the waitlist moved quickly and a table was ready at 2pm. We ordered a seafood pancake and each got a sundubu jjigae with the rice. The pancake was delicious- crispy and flavorful. Our tofu soups with beef came out shortly after. I got the regular spice level but could have definitely gotten it spicier. Overall, my rating would be closer to a 4.5 because instead of the hot stone bowl rice we were just given a bowl of rice which was unfortunate and they also didn't have cups for us until midway through our meal when we asked. They were very busy and they just opened so understandable. Otherwise, I'm excited to have an authentic a delicious Korean restaurant in Madison!

It's so exciting to finally have an SGD here in Madison - with so many Asian restaurants opening recently, the Asian food scene here is experiencing a dramatic rise! A group of friends and I came for their soft opening day today, and we were super impressed - with an intimate ambiance, extremely attentive service, reasonable prices, a wide selection of bonchon (side dishes) with free refills, and tasty Korean tofu dishes, this is significantly raising the bar for Korean food here in the city of Madison. We highly recommend any of the Soondubu Jjigae dishes (their specialty!) as well as their tasty side dishes.

I went here with my friends the other day and here is my honest review. First off, the place has been super busy since it opened so expect there to be some wait. There is no area for waiting since the place is really small so be prepared to just brace the cold when waiting to get seated. For food, I got the soondubu and thought it was alright, nothing special. The soup doesn't come with an egg if you get ramen, but it does if you get rice. The soup flavor wasn't very strong and it felt like I was eating ramen that I made from a packet at home. I really liked all the banchan they brought out, especially the pickled cumbers, those were chefs kiss! My bf got the beef short rib which was decent, but if you've ever had BCD they don't really compare. Only one side was really grilled, while the other side was just cooked. The portion is big but it's pricey. The short rib comes with rice. A compliant I have is that the appitizers we ordered took forever to come out. We had already eaten half our main meals before our first app came out, then when we finished all our food our second app came out. We were all full and barely finished it. We had to ask 3+ times about our order.

First I should say I judge a barbecue joint by its ribs. That's it. I have had barbecue all over…read morethe country and smoke a mean rib myself. These ribs were as good as any I've had around the country, and better than most. Some places brag about "fall of the bone tender." To me that is overcooked. Ribs should be "fairly easily coaxed off the bone tender. The need a little bit of chew to them or the are too dry. Smokey Jon's ribs were just right. Now the rest. The barbecue beans were very good. I put a little brisket burnt ends in when I make them. That would have improved these to top notch. I usually shy away from barbecue joint mac and cheese but I ordered it here. Hey, I'm in Wisconsin. It's got to be at least ok. It was better than just ok. It had a generous amount of cheese and the symtickiness that good Mac and cheese must have. For my taste, it had too much garlic. I'm a big garlic fan. When I see a recipe that says "one clove of garlic," I figure it's a misprint and they meant "one head of garlic." Here, they used powdered garlic, and I feel like the amount they used covered up the natural sweetness of the cheese. The ambiance of the place was spot on. I am visiting Madison, from Oregon (Go Ducks!) Driving by the place it looks like they've got to have at least passible 'cue. Inside it was classic back woods barbecue chic. "Log cabin" looking interior walls, red and white checkered plastic table cloths, and great old school blues on the sound system. Is this place perfect? No, won't get that until you pass through the Pearly Gates. But it's about as good as your going to get anywhere else, unless you come over to my back yard on 4th of July.

Unfortunately, Smokey Joe's doesn't have collard greens, but their mac and cheese is one of the best I have ever eaten. The consistency is perfect- creamy but not soupy. They use real cheese and it has perfect seasoning . The sugar biscuits were amazing as well. I got the burnt end plate and it was the perfect amount of meat and fat ratio. The meat should be tasty without BBQ sauce and Smoky Jon didn't dissapoint- the BBQ sauce was tangy with just the right amount of spice. Yet, the meat was absolutely delicious without it- the BBQ sauce complimented the meat. Also super nice people. I would definitely come here again. This is in the top 5 of my favorite BBQ resturaunts and judging by all the awards and trophys on the wall, I'm not alone in that opinion.

Drinks are ok, thank goodness for happy hour prices, at the bar only. The iceberg salad was very good, bacon would be great. But in our viewing, we noticed the great happy hour and decided Liberty Station would be out early evening cocktail and appetizer spot...it was the right move! The space is good sized with several areas for seating from the bar to dining room to the patio. It is industrial smokehouse for sure, which is exactly what you want from a bbq joint. We bellied up to the bar, where the bartender was prompt, friendly and helpful. Being our first time, we asked for recommendations and without missing a beat, the brisket loaded fries with a round of old fashioned's...so that is what we went with! The drinks are well, or rail as commonly referred to around this area, and only ran us $5 - $6. They were tasty, but we could definitely tell it was a happy hour special cocktail. The fries were plentiful, definitely enough to share between us two. The brisket was tasty and the fries were crisp. And combined, the old fashioned and brisket fries was a solid duo! Overall, Liberty Station was a solid spot for some tasty food and decent drinks!

Honestly, a solid BBQ option on the west side of Madison. I can tell I don't get out much anymore…read morewith how shocked I am by lunch prices. Not just here, but everywhere, really. I think my pulled pork sandwich, two sides (cole slaw and fries) and a drink pushed $17. That's more than I prefer to spend on lunch, but I was going out with some work friends and felt like treating myself. And it was, indeed, a treat! The pulled pork was very good - not overly fatty or anything. Good flavor. I tried the "original" and "sweet city" sauces - both were very good and not overpowering. The fries were good - a little greasy (but "good greasy" if there is such a thing). The creamy cole slaw confused me. It was a bit dry. I know, right? How is creamy cole slaw dry? I'm not sure if it's always like this, or maybe it was off the top of the batch and the "creamy" and dripped to lower parts. Don't get me wrong - it tasted good. We'll see how it is next time I'm there! Overall, a good BBQ stop. The pulled pork sandwich will be a standard order there, but I'm sure I'll venture out to some other dishes to see what they have to offer!

We ordered the city sampler along with a half slab of ribs, since their ribs are $1.99 on Tuesdays. The two sides that I chose were the cornbread and potato salad. As for the quality of the bbq, the brisket was not as tender as I would have expected it to be. The ribs could have also been more tender, but the flavor was good! I have only tried bbq one other time, which was in Houston, TX, so I think I had some high expectations. Everything else was pretty good though, with the pulled pork being my favorite meat. I enjoyed the potato salad as well. The staff was also friendly and helpful. They have various bbq sauces, plates, utensils, and other condiments available on the side, which is nice. For a bbq spot in Madison, it's decent. The price is also pretty affordable, which was a huge plus! I would come back if I'm ever craving bbq again.
