Why, when the entire length of the bar is unoccupied, do people line up single file behind the cash registers? It makes zero sense to me when the bar is long to accommodate as many people as possible. Perhaps it's just a pet peeve of mine, but dang, get a move on. The whole place is about the outside patio. While it's very large and impressive it's not very welcoming. Nor is it conducive with moving freely because it gets SO packed. While that might be the scene some enjoy, I don't think it's fun to squeeze. On the positive side, the bartenders are sexy af. Eye candy never hurt anybody so that's a good thing. There is a decent selection of beers and drinks and they aren't overpriced, which sometimes you get at a place like this. It would be a cool spot to hang out if it weren't always so crowded. The first time I ever set foot in the Eagle Tavern was with Nadja M. and her then-boyfriend, about two years ago. It was the memorable night of "these cheaps are drink!" fame, and the kickass bartender who looked like Sammy Hagar, and the gay porn, and oh, the good times... A year later, my would-be SuperBF stumbled in there looking for an ATM on the way to our first booty call (yes, you read that right). He found the ATM, and he also discovered that the Eagle Tavern, though filled with gay men who might be checking him out in a manly-gay-man kind of way, looked like a really cool place to hang out. A year later, SuperBF and I found ourselves back there, at a fundraiser for Dykes on Bikes, drinking free beer and eating free food, listening to our friends singing with the soul cover band Kyra and the Tender Morsels on the back patio. Rockin' our socks off. Getting drunker than skunks with a lot of tough lesbian chicks, even though we were due at his elderly aunt and uncle's in Palo Alto for dinner later that evening. Well, it's kinda hard for me to review this bar. I've danced on it, played the stage, puked in corners, been naked, pissed in jars in the DJ booth, shown my bush in order to get happy hour prices on beard night, and once got kissed by one of the owners to show me that gay men kiss better. To be fair, I'd just say that he didn't prove that gay guys kiss better, he proved that maybe gay BIKERS kiss better, but that's another story. This bar was taken over by its current owners because the Hole was, at the time, getting taken over by Castro boys, and they needed to take the party elsewhere. But they went hog wild. These two men KNOW what a bar shoud be like. Amongst the many special touches are the benches out on the patio. Notice that they're cut into three slabs. That middle slab? The thin one? Was built deliberately to have some give. This is so your ass doesn't get sore from sitting on some unforgiving, flat bench. Also note the heat lamps above so's you don't freeze said ass off in the colder months. The driftwood chair's got a drink tray and it and the gearhead fountain next to it were made by one of the owners. And it's fun to straddle the fence above the grill and spit into the fire. Beer bust on Sundays is really more for the nouveau leather boy crew, in my experience---but I haven't been to a beer bust here in so long who knows what goes on now. Maybe our thoughts and discussions revolved around the dark and filthy nature of what happens behind these closed doors but the reality is, it's pretty damn cool. Walk in and find yourself inside a dark bar with gazing eyes all around and perhaps a dancer or two. But who doesn't enjoy a stuffed banana hammock everyone once in a while? Grab a decently made drink at the bar and make your way outside. This is where the magic happens. Step outside and all of a sudden you're transported into a world that could only excite my child-like giddiness for memories of laser tag and leather. At four of them, you break even on your cover charge, and the rest is icing on the cake---or head on the beer. It seems like most big cities have their version of the Eagle--often called the Eagle--but I have to prefer ours best. It's a leather bar. It's a dive bar. It's a... big space with a brick BBQ fire pit. The Eagle truly attracts all types and doesn't bat an eyelash at, well, anything. Like many, I make an almost weekly pilgrimage to SoMa for their anything-goes Sunday beer bust. It's probably some of the most fun you can have in San Francisco with alcohol in public. Smoking: should be only in one section of the patio as not everyone smokes. This day and age smoking cigars or cigarettes should not be allowed at all in bars. It turns peoples stomachs. Door guys: super friendly Bartenders: this is where things go bad. The bartenders are the worst. Super rude and slow. One huge thing that turned me off was a "manager guy" (bigger guy) was walking to the back employee area on the patio and was forcing himself through the crowd even though there was plenty of room. He was pushing people out of the way. This was so unprofessional. I am so sad to see this rude behavior in a bar. I know it gets crowded but there is a way of working your self through the crowd. This is an amended review, because in my previous review, I had said that one bartender was not friendly to women, when in fact I totally misunderstood the guy, and hope he accepts my apology...A couple of women friends had told me that I was wrong about him, and then last night he talked to me about it, and was a complete gentleman about it, even though it really offended him that I said he was sexist, because he is in fact not at all sexist, but has a lot of women in his life. This is a great bar....Music is excellent- not that discoey crap...The Cramps, Led Zepplin...even some oldies...all stuff I like....They have bands on Thursday nights....Sunday beer busts are butt to butt packed but fun. It's also a great place to bring a pack of people on a Saturday night- there's plenty of room and it's not obnoxiously crowded for a Saturday. You can hang out in the large back area and smoke, and be in the sun, so you don't have that feeling of being in a dark bar during the day. This place is also very woman friendly- so it's one of the few gay bars in SF where both men women, gay and straight hang, and get along , and are not isolated from one another. read more

There are two functions for the SF Eagle: Gay bar and rock show venue. This review is for the ladder. Came here to see Thee Oh Sees and Total Control last night. A sign on their door stated the club's doors would open at 7:30 and they didn't actually open up until 8:00. They hire douchey security to patrol out front. One of the little Napoleonic guards was taking people's tallboys away and trashing them while they waited in line for doors to open. The staff inside the bar (not the security force, mind you) is pretty friendly and attentive. We went up to the bar multiple times and never waited more than 30 seconds for a drink. The patio is has heat lamps and was even set up with a bootblack station where a guy in assless leather chaps was shining away boots. At one point I wanted to leave briefly for a pack of smokes and come back, so I asked the staff inside the doorway if that would be okay. No problem at all, they said. But then the security guards outside said we would have to wait in the massive line again. Really? Because I did, after all, pay $15 for this show and am wearing my wristband. Also, show was way overpacked. read more

I would give the Eagle 5 stars if it weren't for the cigarettes everywhere!! Cigarettes, cigarettes everywhere!! There is no way to get away from it unless you go inside ... and if you know The Eagle, why would you want to be inside. Especially on a Sunday Beer Bust day. I've been a patron of this bar for over 20 years and have had some amazing Sundays here. And I was incredibly happy when it reopened after being closed for over a year. But lately the smoking outside has become absolutely unbearable. The attitude here is that if you don't like breathing cigarette smoke, then you should just leave. This is a really sad reality. Especially 50 years after the Surgeon General said that smoking causes lung disease and it's now well known that 2nd hand smoke is dangerous. Smokers here will light up and blow smoke in your face and nearly burn you with their lit cigarette and it doesn't matter where you try to take refuge. Heck, I've actually been burned by their cigarettes being carelessly waved around. Even if you're in the more covered parts of the bar, like the pergola style cover, where the airspace is even more confined. I've also seen people light up INSIDE at the back bar, which is an INDOOR space just off the back patio. And no one says anything. But if you're someone, like me (and my friends), who doesn't wish to breath their smoke... well, then it's just up to you to find some place else to stand. The management of this bar doesn't care because they are all smokers and want to be able to smoke anywhere. It's really sad for those of us who are not addicted to tobacco. Because there is no place for us to enjoy ourselves on a sunny Sunday afternoon, except for the dark, mostly empty interior of the front bar. I would like to see the management set up the UPPER back patio area as a smoking area and not allow people to smoke elsewhere. Or at the very least not allow people to smoke under the pergola, since the airspace is so confined under there that it's almost like an indoor space. Now for the reasons I give this bar 4 stars. Great place to hang out with your friends on a Sunday afternoon. Well priced drinks and friendly sexy bartenders. A really amazingly diverse crowd of hot men and complete freaks. A very nicely done space too. A lot of history here as one of San Francisco great Bohemian and Leather Gay Sunday Beer Bust spaces. I hope it stays around forever!! read more

The patio is awesome. There's enough space to get away from the crowd but there's plenty of opportunities to mingle with the leather daddies and bears if you so desire.The entire bar is done in a motorcycle / woodlands theme that feels cozy or dirty, which ever you prefer. The toilet is a trough that 3 guys can squeeze into if the mood is right. I'm sure there's a proper toilet somewhere, but I've never seen it. Personally, I'd like to see more real bikers at the bar. I rarely see any Harleys parked out front, but still all the men are dressed in Harley tees and leather gear. I assume they are bike lovers but decided a Prius would be more practical. On second thought, drinking and bike riding probably isn't a good combination, so perhaps they are smart by not riding their bikes to the bar. The last time I was there, the music was far out, old trippy rock n roll that was way too mellow for such a rambunctious crowd. Maybe it was a special night for old stoners that I wasn't aware of. I hope that the next time I'm out there, the music in modern rock and up beat. I'll update this soon, I need to go back for another round. read more

This review is only for Thursday Nite Live because I've never been to the glorious Eagle Tavern any other night besides. My verdict is that Thursday Nite Live is one of the best music nights around the Bay Area. Even though after this past Thursday I don't really wanna write anything because there were SO MANY FREAKING PEOPLE THERE it was hard to move, get a drink, find friends, hear yourself talk, etc. I've never seen so many people at the Eagle Tavern which is, I guess, good for the spot's cred and longevity, but it also seemed to be contaminated by more than it's share of douches (of which they are usually a negligible amount) this particular Thursday. Even the outside patio, usually a spacious respite from the microscopic inner bar, felt like a can of sardines. Really, really good looking sardines. ANYWAY, onto the music--Bay Area gems like Thee Oh Sees, the Fresh & Onlys, Mayyors, etc. etc. etc. play here on the regular and give SPECTACULAR shows--there's something about the totally cramped, weirdly shaped audience area that just sends people into hysterics and it makes it hard not to get caught up in everyone else's energy. Plus, drinks are cheap and the staff is friendly. It all makes for late, awesome nights that remind you why it rules to be young. read more

First time back here since the new owners. I have to see it's much improved. They seemed to open things up, clean things up, get rid of the crap taking up space, and really make it more inviting. The Sunday crowd was really inviting. Staff was friendly and welcoming. Plus, it was quite so packed, so one could walk around for a change. The deck, in particular, was more conducive to people. There were some women making turkey burgers (??) by the grill. They did not look appealing at all!! (Take a lesson from the guys who make the AMAZGING hamburgers at The Hole in San Diego on Sunday's Beer Bust. Then you're have a REAL burger!) Only complaint (like last time) was the smokers/smoking EVERYWEHRE!!! There was little escaping it. It would be so nice to have the smokers in one section so the non-smokers don't have to deal with it. I "get it" that it's a liberal, leather bar, but that does not change the fact that some of use are health-conscious. Overall, Nicely done SF Eagle. read more

I've been here a handful of times, but each time, it's a memorable occasion. The first time, I saw Raunchy Reckless & the Amazons, a Xena tribute band. Their hit song is What Would Xena Do? Words to live by. The 2nd time, I was on my first date with a priest. (Okay, really a pastor, whatever, priest sounds cooler, right?) So naturally, we go to the bear bar & no one had the slightest problem with the straight couple making out. Very open-minded. Of course, they didn't know he was a priest, I guess. Most recently I saw the Guy-Guys there, an all guys Go-Go's cover band, kind of like a cross between the Go-Go's and maybe the New York Dolls, only crazier. Totally awesome. Space out back with a fire. And, added bonus, you can usually find parking nearby, though I wouldn't vouch for the safety of the neighborhood. UPDATE - The Eagle was the venue for my band's first gig. We had a great time, the bartender/sound guy was incredibly patient with my nervous first-time micro-managing, the stage was ample for our needs, the audience seemed happy with the ambience, drinks, and back patio. Loved playing there! Only complaint - the fact that people have to go across the stage to get to the bathroom...which, incidentally, does not have a door. read more

Great place to go on a hot Sunday afternoon to celebrate your completion of the dreaded but required laundry chores that morning! I have been going off and on here for years and I have to say that it is rather consistent in its loyalty to provide a good time. Sunday beer bust are always packed, the best music (metal and rock n roll, thank god), and the occasional "show" for mature audiences only, well semi mature... Huge patio with a bar in the back. fire pit, stage area. During festivals and holidays there can be a line out from to get in. Two man enter...one man leave...or vise versa... Thursdays can be quite interesting when the bands start to play. One Thursday a couple of years ago I thought I heard a "the new genre" of music here....stuffed animals jumping around playing wacky beats obviously on some sort of supplements, but it was interesting and well received as a good night. Most other nights (except Sundays & Thursdays, see above) is a hit or miss, or quite frankly dead in bar terms...they do however have some occasional fundrasier here so you never know... Though I am not a part the leather community and have no intentions of joining (hey, my mother reads Yelp...O...K!) but a key "must not miss party" is the Golden Dildo Awards that coincide with the Golden Globe Awards...find out who will get the award for "Best Double Penetration" . It is a hoot! ;-) Good times, good times. The Eagle Tavern: Its oh so gay, but sometimes straight San Francisco done oh so right. Its really just a San Francisco place. Dirty is some spots but surprisingly charming and comfortble, like the city herself. No labels...No lube...No mercy....that should be their slogan! One of my friends got me to start frequenting this place. They have a large space, and they're almost always rolling out new events. I usually encounter the events by chance more than planning, but they're happy coincidences nonetheless with plenty of eye candy. Their patio is heated as well as host to SF's largest beer bust weekly. If you get into the beer bust, don't leave, you might not be able to get back in. It's a maximum occupancy thing, and I get why they have to do it, but it sucks anyway. However, they won't sell you food unless you buy a beer cup, in spite the fact I'm making them more money paying full price for my cocktails, The bouncers are also pretty friendly. Though, one gripe they have control of was charging me to get back in when I went and grabbed food. Most bars won't charge you to get back in if you just step out, but I was, which was a little lame. read more

When my friend suggested that my wife and I go to see a show near where I work, I thought "Why not"? After visiting the SF eagle's website I did manage to speculate on a few very good reasons why not and I am really glad that we ended up going. The place is a biker bar (you get happy hour prices if you have a motorcycle helmet) and there is more than just a hint of lavender about the place. "Is this a gay bar?" the missus innocently enquired as we darkened its door. "I don't think so, my mate didn't mention......." I replied just as we both enter to be confronted with one gentleman groping the other's arse as when ambled over to the bar. Without breaking stride we order our drinks and wander out to the patio. The missus was the only girl. Not only that but the vast majority of gents present were now looking in our direction and I swear the amount of facial hair on show could have insulated a small maisonette. With 30 seconds a huge man with flowing a flowing ginger beard introduced himself as 'Tank' and after that we were treated like honoured guests and had a great night. Shout out to Roman and 'The Big Bear' and also met Gary Floyd out of The Dicks. Great place. We went several times after that. Amazing variety of people there. Great bands too. NOFX went there after their show. You can hear them on their 2nd live album saying "See y'all at The Eagle", by the way. I've been to the eagle a few times with friends and always enjoyed it. The bartenders are attentive and kind, the drinks are good and the atmosphere is nice. It's always been a sort of neutral place for me but tonight my expectations were greatly exceeded. The whole energy tonight was great the bartenders were especially great, refilling a drink that someone had knocked over by accident. Also tonight I accidently left my phone in the bathroom and within ten minutes one of the security guards CJ had found the phone and returned it to me. CJ was fabulous and I really appreciated how he helped me but also how kind he was about the whole thing! read more
