Never before had I realised where everyone goes to in San Francisco on a Saturday night who may have once gone out in what's now a very desolate Castro, currently a dim shadow of what once was. However, on this quarterly visit from London, I may have stumbled on the watering hole. There were perhaps 200+ people there, which i hope is a Saturday night norm, rather than a long holiday weekend uptick. That said, it was a fun evening and one I hope to repeat in future visits, long after my time living in San Francisco, in a distant past when I only knew The Eagle for its Sunday beer bust, which hopefully is still going strong at this institution. read more

I have a confession to make. For the longest time, I was afraid of going to the Eagle. I just figured I wasn't burly enough or had enough leather and link chain in my wardrobe. However, over a year ago, I finally steeled myself and entered through the foreboding black curtain. Hey, it wasn't scary at all. In fact, it was damn near empty at around 6:30PM on a weeknight. What was I so worried about? If you didn't know, the Eagle has a huge space with a huge patio. Only one of the two bar counters was open, but they were offering outrageously reasonable $6 Eagle Margaritas during Happy Hour (photo: https://yelp.to/GY98AyGOv5). Nothing to sneeze at or tangle with a den of bears about. Even though it's not part of a chain, did you know there are over thirty gay bars named Eagle around the world? They all focus on bears but in different ways indicative of each culture. Jamie W and I have been to Eagle Tokyo and Eagle Tokyo Blue recently (review: https://yelp.to/k6YVl5Jb4C), so I wasn't completely in the dark about the scene. I think SF Eagle may have a stronger sense of community because I've stopped by when they offered holiday meal buffets and OK, that might've been me at Last Chance Underpants and Daddy Issues. SF Eagle also known as The Eagle of San Francisco or San Francisco Eagle is apart of a historic line of queer bars celebrating all parts of LGBTQ+ but especially the communities within the community (leather, bear, kink, fetish, pup)... and brings people together. "Each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess, and a criminal"... Nobody left behind. They display the flags for pride, leather, bear and so many I'm still constantly learning about proudly on the top outside of the bar. Checking IDs at the door always so no matter your age, carry your ID. They sometimes have a cover depending on the day or time of day hosting a lot of non-profit and community events as well as giving back. My first time in of I want to say several over the weekend. I was impressed by the grungy yet vibrant layout, friendly bartenders at so many bar areas (three - two inside and one deep in back off the patio) and those drinks! Never have I ever had better ones at an Eagle, enjoyed the music non-stop and the many places to either sit, linger, lean or take in the entire bar which extends into a den area, item check area, several gender friendly restrooms though not so much the one on the patio. Cash is preferred, but they do accept cards with a small service fee to offset. From being a frequenter of the Eagle LA I knew to have cash regardless (as they don't accept cards at all there). One thing that was pretty cool is them serving food on weekends, but only until a certain time - think burgers and fried sides. The french fries are stellar and too my surprised they offer a vegan burger that I'll be back for. Enjoyed several beverages between Friday, Saturday and Sunday here - gay bar level pours for sure, but even better (stronger cocktails). Spending time with my boyfriend, making new friends and running into so many from Los Angeles up for the weekend made SF Eagle feel like home. Neighborhood elevated big dive bar vibes. We hung out on the upper patio area a lot where you get the best view of it all. Definitely not a place for the faint of art. The art and photography on the walls alone might be too much for some, but we're all adults. And if you've been to other Eagle establishments you know what to expect, though one that plays great videos, movies and has this much space will truly impress. The International Mister Leather/IML 2024 is currently a title holder for SF Eagle - SF Eagle Leather Pup 2024 Jamal O'Malley-Herrera. He was around a bit for the weekend, but also proudly displayed on the huge projector and monitors. Great mood lighting, great events and an impressive beer bust on Sundays. Going up for Folsom Street Event's Up Your Alley (Dore Alley) was the best, but I will say that wait on Sunday to get in was a wow (over an hour, close to an hour and a half), but worth it. I found out they have karaoke here on Mondays and I know I'll be staying an extra day next time I visit just to enjoy that. Don't bother driving here - the parking is sparse and it's around a lot of residential buildings - lots of rideshares (including Waymo and co about). Open mic, comedy nights, trivia, body positive, bdsm education, contests, drag, SF Eagle has it all and definitely has me hooked. Just don't tell Eagle LA... or actually do! And then stop in and enjoy yourself at the one and only Eagle San Francisco. read more

I've went here twice the first time was great experience. I came with my friend who dances for the bar for some of their events and had a wonderful experience. So, i decided to bring some other friends to come with me during an event. We were so excited to finally all go to a leather bar together. And the event in general was amazing! BUT..... The staff is AWFUL and scams their patrons. I don't understand why we were getting dirty looks from staff when my friend asked if he left his wallet at the bar, and why the bartender charged us $75 for 3 well tequila redbulls. Mind you, 2 of the same drink were around $25 total... We didn't want to argue with staff because we understand how stressful it is working in nightlife/bars are, but this was ridiculous. We were definitely some of the younger people in the crowd, and I am not sure if that has something to do with it, but it felt very awful for people of our community to treat us with disrespect and scam us. read more

I'm of Latino origin, and I was kicked out by a security guard for no clear reason on a very slow night and told "don't ever come back." The security guard was from the segregation era. As a Latino guy, the interaction felt targeted and humiliating. Security did not touch me because I left immediately as soon as the situation escalated. There was no explanation and no respect. As you can see from the pictures of the bar, age or behavior don't matter -- what matters is your ethnicity and your origin. This happened in front of other American people who were also upset (be mindful you can't always tell, because they are brown). It would probably be safer for me not to say anything, but it's better to be honest about what happened. This place isn't the inclusive space it claims to be. Same power trips and arbitrary enforcement you see in plenty of places in the U.S. Hard pass for me. The situation didn't feel safe, especially if you are not American or white. And always remember: there's a lot of competition out there -- that's why this place is cheap. read more

Recently went for the beer bust with friends. The staff was so all over the place some bartenders were super nice while others hated life. The worst was one of their bar backs. Had to make a public service announcement about how crowds work in busy bar. All because my group had found a corner to hang out in. Then when I was just dancing for not even 10 seconds he came sweeping in to tell me to stop or I would be kicked out. I was like whatever bro. A few friends visited Eagle SF for Pride weekend, and my friend asked for a drink automatically. The bartender yelled at him to leave he was extremely hostile, and we asked why he said he just had to leave. Another bartender told us just to go to the back side because this guy was having a bad day! Tbh, my friend felt targeted for being Latino as we were leaving he chased us out and injured one of us! He left the bar just to do this and went back to work. We spoke to a manager, and he just said sorry, "He's never been like this." Sad day! read more

Came in on a Monday, which is Karaoke night. They had some pretty wicked singers, but it was pretty dead. I think in total there were like 10 people, including the bartender and the DJ for karaoke. The back patio was open for a bit, but there was not really any people so not much use outside of being a smoking area. The drinks were cheap and the singing was good, so I'd definitely come back, but maybe on a busier evening. Overall, a cool spot. I thought i was the type of gay who could enjoy any music/ambiance/dj if you get me drunk enough. Keyword:was Imagine throwing a guitar in a wood-chipper, only for the guitar string to get stuck in the rotor. But the rotor keeps spinning with the screeching sound of dying instruments stuck in its gears. Only to be occasionally interrupted with a loud "your bluetooth device is ready to pair" or a Spotify ad. Last time i was there the trash speakers and the blownout no-copyright music gave me a migraine. An actual migraine. im in my 20s and ive never had a migraine before. ive no family history of migraines. But there i was, having an actual honest to god migraine for the first time. It felt like my soul was itchy. like my soul was strapped to a torture chair and subjected to a million nails scratching on chalkboards. I think the grima made me age 30yrs that one night. And no this isn't just one night, it's every single time ive been there. Dear god please fix the music. yall have a good atmosphere, nice staff, nice open space ambiance. Pure JOY is hanging at this classy, classic SF legend I've seen some scorching movies staged/filmed in this place in the 80's/90's so I was thrilled our band the Golden Seed Garden got to play here. Well the entire night was easy, fun, with GREAT sound, tasty drinks, and an appreciative audience- and the staff were pleasant and accommodating the entire night. As it happens I left my backpack there when we loaded out- my treasured Bluetooth speaker, $500 cash, other stuff- and don't you know they put it in list and found and I got it next night with no problem I highly recommend this place for sexy friendly fun times read more

Well, I am guy all my life lol. It never went to the San Francisco Eagle. A stable gay institution as it seems. Ok that ended last night when a friend of mine had a party thrown there. I was amazed how big the bar is, it is split into a outside patio style area and the actual dance and bar area. It wasn't busy but I am sure there will fit a lot of people in there. It's a nice surrounding, felt very clean. It is so huge it has three separate bars. Just one was opened yesterday but the mixologist was very good and the prices reasonable for San Francisco. As always with almost every bar they don't have ice tea but bottles sparkling water! Yeah that's a win for a non drinker like me :). So I'll have to come back and check this out when it's busy but right now I'll think it deserved five stars. read more

Although I'm not really big into the other drinks, my friends always come here and if you want bottled stuff they got tons of it and galore. Of course you can always drink the beer. Best froth it's a fun social crowd. It's a store at the open air venue makes it excellent in today. I was going out there and they were doing community service to benefit nonprofit. He can't beat that good people, good community service, good brew, and a pack, social house that is friendly and flirtatious. Like other people have said, the bartenders are rude and have attitude. I walked up to the bar when it was relatively empty inside and the bartender just stared at me, no acknowledgement. I asked for an Eagle lemonade and he very curtly said "a WHAT." So I explained that I saw it on their menu behind him. He made no acknowledgment of this, went to check their lemonade tap, and mumbled "I guess." Overall ruined my mood. In my opinion, it would be better to take your money elsewhere, there's so many good bars in SF with nicer staff. read more

Eagle SF is one of those grunge gay leather/bear/daddy bars that attracts a wide variety of guys but consistently has its crowd type. Staff have been consistent, attentive, and great attitudes. Eric was especially a great bartender who was there on a slower night with great service and conversation. The Eagle is a place to gather. I'm not into the crowd much at all, but it's a good respite from other bars. They have a very large patio and outdoor stage suitable for shows. The Eagle has gone through some changes since I last reviewed it - no more trees, no more fire pit, new management, etc. - but one thing that hasn't changed is its commitment to our community. And that includes making sure that all patrons have been vaccinated - even before the city mandate took effect - so that people can enjoy themselves without having to worry about ignorant plague rats in their midst. My suggestion to anyone who disagrees with this policy and who thinks he/she can effect change by creating Yelp accounts just to post anti-vax lies: Move to Texas or Florida. No vax mandates, no masks - what could possibly go wrong? read more

Drink beer... If you want anything else... Well, let's just say their glasses are too big for a pour at a gay bar. Charged me 30$ for 3.75oz of Woodford. 10$ a pour is a pour of 1.25oz. I'm a bartender and assume the owner is insisting they pour so poorly. I noticed friends getting conspicuously undepoured... The bartender was very nice and I was happy tipping extra 2-3$ a glass on my beer and wine. Actually a very nice guy behind the bar. So I go up and ask to buy a friend a drink and tell him "my friend needs a nice drink so what's your pour" he pulls out his jigger after gesturing at a glass an amount. And shows me his pour. He has a 1.5 oz conical jigger (I have the same jigger at work) and pours short of the top at the line at 1.10-1.25 oz. That's a jigger my company uses to keep costs down. Again, this is a divey gay bar in SOMA not a corporate hotel, so I'm confused. Look, I like the guy. I Love the patio space. I dislike the owner's policy. Man, did I pick the perfect night to first visit the SF Eagle when I spent a few days in the city. It was Gaymer Night, and my experience was literally the best at a gay bar outside of LA. Besides the games, everyone here was really chill and welcoming, which is an obvious plus. Like super chill, I'm even in contact with them and it's safe to say we're friends at this point. The drink specials for the night were amazing because they matched the theme (had a Zelda's Wild Breath) and I'm a sucker for details like that. Not to be too comparative, but I like the layout of this Eagle more than the LA one. I kinda just like the SF Eagle more which might be fighting words depending on who hears, but I'm insanely jealous that the SF one isn't my local version. I mean, it takes a lot for me to visit the same bar two nights in a row but the SF Eagle managed that, so I'd say it's well worth anyone's time. read more

Eagle bars are all over the world including San Diego, Chicago (former city I lived in), Los Angeles and of course San Francisco. It's a go to name for most leather bars. None of them are connected except for two things, the name (with either the city name added) and that for the most part a leather bar. I say that because I have visited most of these bars and some are more part of the leather community than others. They have to survive in the current world of Social media wherein gay bars have been replaced by Social apps such as Grindr, Scruff and Recon. Nothing really replaces face to face meeting groups in bars but some pooh pooh this connection. They mostly seek an ideal meeting place online or regular sports bars or other venues to connect. After that mini lecture, let's examine this particular bar. I review most places I go to but hesitate to do most bars. Obviously, when it comes to personal choices, we don't have to reveal all of our activities to the world including places that most people don't frequent. But Yelp has become a go to for visitors in the urban landscape, so I share my own experiences in bits and pieces but almost always on places I have at least been once or twice a year (out of town). Most of my travels are for pleasure and family and not for business, so I visit to relax. If you are familiar with what SF Eagle is, then here is my take. It's spacious with half of the place almost outdoors. It gets busier on times when there is a specific event related to leather or the leather community is happening. That being said, this only means more visitors and not necessarily the same people it would cater to. Although we all want to be inclusive, the idea that someone in their shorts after a long afternoon out can come into to the same bar where most people are dressed for the event makes it different in my eyes. No issues with this until the same people complain about service, environment and of course how this bar is not what they thought it could be. I have been to many bars, I can't say most of them would not be considered the ideal place - noise, spilled beers, bathrooms with possibly hygiene issues and of course a large variety of clientele from the curious, to the extreme. I have seen the SF Eagle busy and quiet. However, I always come in with my expectations tamped down. I know how to be patient on busy nights and not worry if the place is empty (less crowded). I enjoy each visit because I don't try to idealize a place. SF Eagle can be what you want it to be, a different place to meet friends and strangers. You have to come in with expectations that if it is a leather event, there might be men/women in gear (leather) in various forms. On quieter times, seeing people in casual clothes is expected with a mix of some other leather persons. Out of-town visitors seek similar places (like I do) in other cities they have visited - Berlin, London, Paris etc for like minded folks. If you are one of those, always check the website. If nothing is going on during that week or weekend, don't expect much but if its a particular event, prepare accordingly (crowds,mixed groups of people). read more

Why, when the entire length of the bar is unoccupied, do people line up single file behind the cash registers? It makes zero sense to me when the bar is long to accommodate as many people as possible. Perhaps it's just a pet peeve of mine, but dang, get a move on. The whole place is about the outside patio. While it's very large and impressive it's not very welcoming. Nor is it conducive with moving freely because it gets SO packed. While that might be the scene some enjoy, I don't think it's fun to squeeze. On the positive side, the bartenders are sexy af. Eye candy never hurt anybody so that's a good thing. There is a decent selection of beers and drinks and they aren't overpriced, which sometimes you get at a place like this. It would be a cool spot to hang out if it weren't always so crowded. I'd call this a quick stop-in place. One and done, then move along to somewhere else. It's nice for a hot minute, but that's about it. read more
