    Penicillin
    Alex C.

Sunday Scaries? Not if you're drinking this. You know it's a Castro Sunday when brunch is a memory, the drag queens are winding down, and you're debating whether to go home or make one last questionable decision. Enter: Last Call, dimly lit and perfectly cozy, with the kind of bartender who looks like they've seen it all, and still hands you the perfect drink without judgment. I asked for a Penicillin and what I got was Sunday night therapy in a glass. Smoky blended scotch layered gently over lemon, honey, and ginger so smooth, it practically whispered, "You're going to be fine. Just don't open Slack tomorrow before 10." It's medicinal in the best way, like if your grandmother were a speakeasy witch doctor from a Queen in Glasgow. Every sip feels like it's curing whatever twink nonsense the week tried to do to you. Your boss? Irrelevant. Your ex? Foggy. That existential dread creeping in? Drowned in peat and citrus. This isn't a cocktail. It's a reset button with ice. Pro tip: get it before the lights come up and the jukebox cuts off. It's called Last Call for a reason and this Penicillin is the prescription you didn't know you needed.

I guess it would be more appropriate for me to call this spot the First Last Call Bar since believe it or not, I had never been here before a recent atmospheric river forced me physically to seek shelter. And I do mean 'physically' because I was like Winnie the Pooh on that blustery day looking for my honey pot. It was early on a weekday, like 3:30PM, when I entered the portal. There was just a couple of guys at the far end of the long bar and the friendly bartender keeping himself busy. The TV was playing one of the Star Wars movies from the pre-Luke, Natalie Portman trilogy. I never saw that trio so I couldn't tell you why Natalie was looking like a pissed-off prom queen. I decided to try one of their specials, the $13 Spicy Passion Fruit Margarita (photo: https://bit.ly/3K1bYFE). It provided a nice, unseasonably warm kick. No arms were twisted on my second drink, the $8 Makers Mark & Ginger (photo: https://bit.ly/3KwZrvi). I was ready to face the inclement weather. Liked my experience so much I came back a couple of weeks later. This time, the TV was playing the pre-coital samurai scene from "The Bodyguard". That was more like it. A very chill place at 4PM. COCKTAILS - 5 stars...libations made to order AMBIANCE - 5 stars...heavy mellow during an atmospheric river in a compact atmospheric space SERVICE - 5 stars...nice guys tend the bar here TOTAL - 5 stars...return visits likely, Last Last Call unlikely RELATED - Exploring the Castro? My favorite cozy spot for a beverage. It can be a tight fit, a bit loud, but the bartenders will more than make up for it!

We decided to use the portable restrooms outside instead. While we were waiting in line, the outdoor area was closed off. When we tried to return, we were told we couldn't re-enter unless we waited in a very long line and paid admission again. We explained that we only needed to go back inside to retrieve our checked clothes, but we were still told we would have to wait in line and pay a second time. That was completely unreasonable. After some discussion, the staff asked to see our coat check ticket and said one of us could go inside to collect our belongings. However, when I tried to enter, another staff member stopped me and again insisted that I had to wait in line and pay a second admission fee. Eventually, I was allowed to go in, retrieve our clothes, and leave. The lack of communication and coordination among the staff turned what should have been a fun experience into a frustrating one. Better communication and a more reasonable process for guests who simply need to retrieve their belongings would have made a big difference. I will avoid going to the Eagle SF in the future.

It comes with a real dumpling! * Mango Sago = I really liked this one - tastes exactly like mango with coconut and has a few mochi for fun. * Ube Cheesecake = yummy dessert cocktail that is fairly thick so commit (it's worth it) The food is really unique as well - I highly suggest the deviled egg sampler. The atmosphere is very lounge like with chill vibes. Service is great.

Lore's Wonderland escape room was a fun and delightfully whimsical experience. **This review is…read moremainly for the escape room, as we did not order any additional drinks outside of the escape room.** THE SPACE // Lore Speakeasy and Escape Room has cool themed decor everywhere, from the dimly-lit speakeasy/bar room in front, to the Middle Earth/Lord of the Rings-themed board game room, to the individual bathrooms, and of course the escape room's multiple Alice in Wonderland-themed rooms. Clearly a lot of effort went into building these rooms and evoking a certain vibe for each. THE ESCAPE ROOM // The puzzles in the escape room varied in difficulty - some required us to think a bit more, some required our observational skills to work harder, and others required a light level of physical skill/movement. We were perplexed a few times but never got stuck for too long, as the White Rabbit (played by Phoenix, the live actor/puzzle master) would jump in occasionally to provide clues over the speaker or in person. It took us about 1 hr 20 min to finish the entire escape room; I thought the pacing was good. THE [ESCAPE ROOM] DRINKS // Lore's escape room experience comes with "a flight of themed cocktails or mocktails, including "potion"-style drinks that are integrated into the experience as you progress", per the website. We got to choose one cocktail/mocktail option (Korean Cold Noodles) from a list on the website, and the other two drinks are pre-selected to supposedly fit into the Wonderland theme, with the flavors described online as "berry" and "peach". You can get both cocktail and mocktails for your party, in case some people want alcohol and others don't. We all enjoyed the flavor of the Korean Cold Noodles cocktail, which was refreshing and surprisingly a bit minty in the mocktail version. However, we didn't like the two other two pre-selected themed drinks as much. The "berry" drink gave us cherry cough syrup vibes, and the cocktail version of it was quite strong. The "peach" mocktail drink reminded me of canned fruit syrup; we also were missing the two cocktail versions, though we decided not to ask for them as the mocktail version already was less than impressive. One other missed expectation here was the size of the drinks that we received in the escape room. We were expecting full-sized cocktails, like what they serve in the speakeasy in front. Instead, we found out that the drinks are served in small "vials". Given the size of the drinks in the escape room, combined with us not even enjoying two out of the three drinks, I would preferred to go through the escape room without the drinks at all, and likely pay a bit less for the escape room then. OVERALL // I'd still recommend the escape room as a good one-time experience with a date/friends/family. Just don't expect too much from the included themed drinks! The speakeasy drinks on the main menu do sound unique/tasty, so I might come back again to try those sometime.
