Hell, I remember when this legendary bear spot was 'Daddy's'. That was back in the '90's when I was in the twilight of my cruising marketability. I don't think I was on a daddy hunt, in particular, but in hindsight, I would've been open to having a drink with someone who had a deep baritone, equally deep pockets, and gray in his temples. The reality was that I was a cheap date, and this was the watering hole to be cheap. Flash forward a few eons and here I was again still being cheap. Only I was definitely not on a daddy hunt. Who's your Daddy now? Or maybe more accurately, Grandpapa. In fact, some middle-aged twink out on the sidewalk called me Mr. Miyagi. But hey, I come here for the friendly, seasoned bartenders and the cheap drinks. Love this bar, I have been coming to San Francisco regularly for 30 years now and knew this place when it was Daddies. They have great staff and really cheap drinks specials often. There is a lovely atmosphere here, very social and a bit cruisey, lots of friendly people. If I had to choose only one bar in SF that I could ever use it would be here. read more

Been here a few times prior when visiting and I really like this place out of the other two I frequented during this trip (The Mix & Midnight Sun). As a matter of fact, we returned here as our last stop of the evening as the prices were unbeatable compared to the other two that I mentioned above as well the cocktails tasting much better (alcohol to base ratio). I once went here for a work trip (yesterday) to scope out the place before bringing my (mostly) straight colleagues the following day. It was Monday, which was underwear night, and despite the 50 degree rainy weather, there were still folks in their undies. Easily the rudest place in the castro. The door attendant pretty much told me to leave--I have been to hundreds of establishments and have never received such rude and a superbly unprofessional door attendant. I guess he needed training and hated his job or just hates people. read more

The bar has always been a good vibe until this experience. I do not recommend using the communal men's restroom. I had a random man try to remove my pants and inappropriately touch me in the bathroom without consent/ and told "no thanks" multiple times. The situation was reported to security, however the man (with a yellow beanie) was allowed to return inside by security because he was as "regular customer"... it doesn't matter what the case/place... no means no... Great bar located on the Castro strip. My friend had suggested we go there and hangout. What I liked about this bar, is it wasn't about being fabulous, it was chill, prices are low. Our friend has a crush on the bartender who likes to be topless, he would smile every time he'd look over at that chiseled torso. Word of advice for the locking bathroom. You need to hold the handle down as you flush, or else it will practically backup. I almost did this, not knowing what I was doing. So scary!!!!! If you're a dude, just using the trough in the back. First let me start by saying I actually like this place. But tonight, the bouncer messed it up. I had a few drinks. I preface this because I figure most people reading it will understand. I told my friends I would be back and walked down the street and bought a couple of pizza slices. Why? Cause we've been drinking and it's the thing to do. So I tried to walk in and he stopped me and said couldn't. I asked why? As anyone would. And he said..."because I said so".. oh hell no! You do not say that to anyone. He continued to say "I said so", so I told him he's behaving like Fox News peeps and Trump and all he needed to say was "no outside food in the bar" and I would have accepted that. Also, put a god damn sign outside if that's the case. I ate a slice and gave the rest to the homeless people outside and then tried to walk in..empty handed. I was told I couldn't go in. I said my friends are in there and don't have signal and just want to tell them I'm out here. Denied again. So I stood outside of the door and waited for closing for my friends to come out. I liked 440 but will never, ever go back there (as if I could get in based on this guy) and will tell everyone I know not to go there while this guy works there. read more

I used to love to come to 440 for the underwear night and just to have a drink and chill w homies but now this place is shitty as fuck and the customer service just terrible... once I got out they were people got kicked out as well and they told me you got kicked out because you are not white.... ATMOSPHERE: It's a narrow, dark-walled, dimly lit bar with a few seats at the front, some in the middle and the majority towards the back. BEVERAGE: They have a full bar menu with good beer prices. My Bud bottle was about $3 or $4. SERVICE: The bartender was friendly and funny even, presenting my beer bottle to me like it was a bottle of wine. I mean, it is what it is. It used to be called Daddy's. I'm not sure why they changed the name, since a more accurate name has never existed for a place. It's a total Daddy bar. Arguably, it's THE Daddy bar. I'm turning 40 quite soon... and when I pop in I'm usually in the youngest quartile of bar patrons. I'm pretty sure that once or twice I've been the youngest fellow in the place. The drinks are cheap and strong. The crowd is friendly enough. The men's room definitely has a peek-a-boo urinal trough, so if you're not okay with getting a compliment while you're peeing, you may want to use the facilities elsewhere. Not really my scene... it's a bit crowded and stuffy and not all of the patrons are obsessive about their personal hygiene. But if that's what you're after, then this is your place. I went in here with some friends - my gf wanted to go to a cool gay bar and this is the place. I've been here before and I prefer it not so crowded. These bartenders are excellent - they have really affordable drinks and can make anything!! I mean they can make a craft cocktail or a great martini and everything in between. They are personable and cool no matter who you are or what you look like. There was a drag queen to my left and they were as cool to her as they were to me and my friends. Awesome place - and the customers all seemed to be having a good time. It felt like camaraderie. ***NO Cards - Bartender said most bars on Castro don't take Cards*** good to know. read more
