I've now taken 4-5 items to Sew What! on Excelsior for repair and I've been very happy with the work. She is very nice and professional. I'm baffled by some of these comments and honestly I'm wondering if they actually went to a different location, because she is solid. She repaired large off-seam rips in expensive yoga pants and they look fantastic - $17 for the repair vs $120 for a new pair of pants. At times she has told me - "I'm not set up to do this job, but you can take it to XYZ shop and they can help,", which I appreciate. She is professional and I think she does pretty much everything on her own, so if you feel like she isn't being nice enough, maybe she is just in a hurry to get back to work (to be clear, that's *not* my experience at all). I have a ton of respect for this business and she's watching her grandkids at times to boot to help family. read more

Been a customer of theirs for around 6 years. I've trusted them with my pants, shirts, hoodies, coats, and suits (blazers, vests, pants, etc). They've repaired zippers. They've reinstalled buttons. They've down patchwork. They've taken in coats, as well as let them out. They've hemmed pants and shorts. They've installed suspender buttons to my slacks, and cufflink holes for my dress shirts. Patchwork is an art skill that I've seen messed up before and when it was time to find a seamstress Sew what was available and with a quick turnaround to boot! My boyfriend plays international rugby and received his patch this year and wanted it placed on this bomber style jacket he liked. The fabric is not your typical letterman jacket and I was worried it wouldn't look nice. Behold! She did an outstanding job and we were able to have his local team patch added as well. For a easy $15 and 4 days wait, she completed the task and we are so happy with the turnout. Beware! This is the button that was sewn into my bridesmaid wrap dress-four threads on the OUTSIDE of the dress. I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw this. I went back in and asked if there was a mistake. She said she could sew into the seam, similar to what she had done for ANOTHER unhappy customer with a wrap dress. I declined because, clearly, the quality of work here is horrendous. I requested the button be removed and I be refunded. Her response was "I never charged you for the button". I paid $70 for a hem and a button and the best she could do was offer me $4 back. Unbelievable! The only pro about this place is it's close to my new house. I will never go back or refer this place to anyone. read more

Sooo I came in to get three items dry cleaned, two jackets and a sweater. One of the jackets had just been sat on by my 15lb orange tabby cat so suffice to say, it was pretty hairy. When I took it out of my bag the lady at the counter said to my face, "Oh no, that's too hairy. Why so much hair. You have to go home and get the hair off before we can dry clean." HOOLLLDDDDD UP. I literally had to stop and think about what she said and then asked "What." She said again that my jacket was too hairy and that I need to get the hair off first before it can be dry cleaned. Part of me was like, am I enraged because after 24 years of living in Los Angeles I am a complete diva? And part of me was like "What the hell? If there was cat hair, poop, and blood she should still be able to dry clean it RIGHT? OTHERWISE I COULD DO IT MYSELF WITH DRYEL." But since I was lazy and completely too passive aggressive to walk out, I gave her the stuff to dry clean and I'm going to pick it up on Wednesday. read more

The zipper of my winter coat needed to be replaced. Work was done on time, but the customer service was pretty disappointing. Both dropping off and picking up my jacket, the woman barely acknowledged my presence and made me feel like my business was a nuisance. Brought my wedding dress in to the xerxes ave "Sew What" location. They took in the waist and hips for me and also sewed in some bra cups. The dress was ready to go in less than two weeks, the total was $65, and I was very happy with their work and felt the price was fair. Would definitely recommend them and go back. read more

This shop shortened 3 pairs of expensive jeans for me and did an awesome job! Some of the original bottom hems were a bit frayed but they still managed to make them look good. The work was done on time and reasonably-priced. The staff was competent and friendly. They did some really good leather work for me a few years ago, as well. Our normal tailor was too backed up for us to use, so we came to this place instead on the recommendation of a friend who uses it for work. We came in early two get 2 shirts tailored, a button sewn on a suit jacket. They said it would take a week and we'd get it in the afternoon. We said that they we didn't have the time for that- so they said they would rush it for five days. The total charge for those items was 76 dollars, which seemed high but we assumed the additional cost was the "rush" fee. We told them that it was for a job interview and the shirts had to be perfect. Additionally, it was pointed out that the sleeves were about 1.5 inches too long. 5 days later, we come back to pick up the shirts and blazer and discover that the sleeves hadn't been shorten at all! The person there said nothing was mentioned about shortening the sleeves, but if we wanted to leave it there, she could do them. We still had to get the shirt dry cleaned, so we had no time for shortening sleeves. We asked for the rush fee back (since they didn't actually complete the job) and the person behind the desk said we'd have to come back and talked to the manager. We came back to talk to the manager, and she said that she never heard us say to shorten the sleeves, and that she never charged us a rush fee. She said "sorry, but I never pinned the sleeves, and you should have said something then". She blamed us for not listening to us! She additionally seemed not the least bit sorry, nor cared how important it was to get this right. I would not go here. The service was not acceptable, they are slow, and they are rude, and there are more tailors in the area that charge more reasonable fees. read more

I had some pants altered here. I had to argue with the tailor about how long I wanted them to be. Unfortunately, I wasn't persistent enough (my fault). When I got them back, I had to bring them to another tailor to have them done the way I wanted. I'll never go back. read more

I was really upset with how much I paid to get two unlined summer maxi dresses hemmed. The hemming for both dresses cost more than the dresses themselves. I felt really ripped off and overcharged. Of course, I could have taken my business elsewhere, but I was in a rush to get this done and didn't have time to shop around. Worst ever. I paid way too much for an alteration that was way too small. I couldn't breath in my bridesmaid dress. And NO I did not put on any weight. I spent much of the day and evening with my dress unzipped because it was altered way too small. I had to deal with concerned family members of the brides saying"honey do you need help zipping your dress?". These people should not be running a business and furthermore should be willing to give refunds for mistakes they made. DON'T GO HERE! read more

I brought a bridesmaid dress here for a simple hem and was not pleased with the result. It was quite obviously done with poor attention to detail and very fast, careless work. My mother, a talented seamstress, who had chosen to let a professional do the work on a delicate dress was not impressed with the hem. I would not bring anything there again. read more
