Accessible Dispatch is actually based in Connecticut, but administers a dispatch system for NYC…read moreyellow cabs that are equipped with handicap ramps and can transport wheelchairs. (If you look around as the larger yellow cabs pass, you'll see that some have a wheelchair symbol on the side. These are the cabs that Accessible Dispatch can send.) I think Accessible Dispatch has a contract with New York City to offer this service. You call, give your call-back #, pick-up location, and # of passengers (since some cars can hold multiple people besides the wheelchair passenger and some only hold one extra person). You get a call back when they have found a cab for you, and the recorded message tells you what time the cab was dispatched and how far away it was. A yellow cab then shows up at your location. When it arrives, you get another phone call telling you the car is there. The driver opens the rear of the cab, lowers the ramp, wheels the wheelchair into the car, and secures it with two hooks in front and two in back for the trip. At the end of the trip, you pay the regular cab far on the meter using whatever means of payment you otherwise would use. According to one driver I chatted up, depending on how far away the driver is when he/she accepts the e-hail from Accessible Dispatch, the driver gets a supplemental payment for the trip. These bonus payments are funded by one of the surcharges that get added by the meter at the end of everyone's taxi rides. (I think it's the 30 cent surcharge.) Here are the pros: -- When it works, it's wonderful. Here are the cons: -- Some drivers seem to have little idea how to secure a wheelchair in place. I've had drivers who had only one of the four securing hooks for the chair, and others who didn't know how to use the securing hooks that they did have. -- The call-back message purports to give you the medallion number of the cab (which for NYC cabs should be a digit, a letter, and two digits). Instead, you are given a five digit number that must correspond to some list somewhere, but is basically useless. -- If a driver gets lost or doesn't show up, you can wait a long time. This depends on the driver, not the dispatch system, but is still frustrating. You can call back and follow-up (which I recommend), but it can be frustrating when a cab is supposedly on the way (especially when one sees other available cabs but passes up on hailing them out of respect for the dispatch system). On balance, though, this makes travel with a wheelchair-bound person MUCH MUCH easier than it would otherwise be.

We waited for 10-15 minutes and decided to just cancel the ride. Then we called another taxi. He said we gave him the wrong address and then continued to hassle us the whole ride home. He brought it up so many times it felt like we were being punished for his mistake. He also drove reckless, talked on the phone while driving and ran multiple red lights. On top of that the van felt unsafe. Very rickety and loud. Extremely unsatisfied with the drivers of this company, though some of the operators were alright. If you want to feel safe, don't use this company. Can't wait until Uber creates accessible ride share.
