Far West Texas can be a pretty desolate place - often lacking in nice scenery, fun things to do, and good dining. Big Spring, while a decent sized-town, is an exemplar of this lack. Settles Grill is a bit of an oasis out there: semi-fine dining, but without the larger price tag you'd find at a restaurant like this in a bigger city. Also, it's not as stuffy as you might find in a bigger city. I imagine this would be a nice stop for anyone passing by on a road trip. Also, the Settles Hotel, where this restaurant is located, is historic and has been restored to its former glory in the last few years. read more

Fine dining is hard to find in small towns but when they have it, it's usually gold. Stopped by here for lunch. Hotel really nice and recently renovated; worth a stay next time. Ordered chicken tortilla soup to start off; nice chunks of avocado complimented shredded chicken and tortilla strips. Selected the Herb Roasted Chicken Breast for entree; meal was excellent. Chicken nicely balanced with mango cheese grits and pan Roasted kale. Portions were just right and meal hit the spot. The grill is located inside of The Settles Hotel. Very cute hotel. The grill was clean and the staff was nice. But if you're in a hurry this might not be your spot. The food was average. We ordered pancakes, waffles, and chicken fried steak and a chip appetizer. I would not recommend the chips. Everything else was okay. But nothing to write home about. read more

Beautiful history and ambience. Service was good. The food really didn't taste good for us but perhaps it's just a matter of taste. I ordered the steak which ended up being tough little pieces with an off taste (to me). The corn tasted bland and frozen. The mashed potatoes were dry and the gravy was not pleasing. My husband had chicken fried which was really dry. We left hungry. I hope this isn't normal and I've given it a better rating based on servers and ambience. read more

Driving up here my husband tells me this place is haunted! I start to freak out :) Wow!! What a great surprise. This restaurant gives Dallas restaurants a run for their money. After living in the Permian Basin for 46 years, this is the first time I've set out with Big Spring as a destination. After reading reviews on the Settles Grill, I decided to surprise my husband with a Sunday brunch. Upon arriving at the hotel, we were taken back to the 1930's in this beautifully restored hotel. Immediately greeted and seated by a pleasant hostess and drink orders were taken. We enjoyed orange and honey zest coffees while deciding on our entree. The seared salmon salads was served along with crisp greens and a tangy lemon dressing. The experience surpassed expectation; we look forward to a return visit. read more

So, after church, today, we went to lunch at the Settles. Sat there for an hour and a half waiting for our food. People coming in after we did, were being served and some even leaving after finishing their food. Waitress kept coming by our table and telling us our order was the next one up. I finally told my husband that I was ready to leave (I was hungry and my blood sugar tanking). As I walk out, I told my husband that I was going to find out what's going on, and he told me good luck, and he was going to the car. Turns out, our waitress never turned our order into the kitchen, and, yet, kept coming by our table saying our order was next up. First time to view the results of the rennovations to the old Settles. Beautifully done. The Grill was crowded so I figured it must be a good place for lunch. The service was very slow apparently due to the crowd. The entrees in the menu were apparently priced to help pay for the rennovations. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak. It took a long while to arrive. The presentation was a woek of art. The steak, however, was a thin, formed cutlet rather than the traditional Texas style chicken fried steak. Could've used more gravy also. Barely enough to cover the dome-shaped mound of mashed potato. Though not a terrible meal, I expected a lot better for the price. I'll probably give The Grill another try, but definitely with a different entree. read more

Staying at the hotel and dined here twice. The pm waitress I had was extremely slow and awkward. She seemed like she didn't want to serve us at first and we felt like she never came by. A very disappointing dining experience. Ordered the fried pickles for an appetizer, sounded interesting with Tabasco butter and blue cheese, the pickles arrived two minutes before the chicken fried steak dinner. The fried pickles were a mess, they did not stay together with the breading and were a mushy mess. The chicken fried steak was a too well done and tasted like it was not fresh made. Stopped by for a cocktail and a bite before an event in town. Published hours in Yelp and others said 7 am-10 pm. A hotel executive happened to see me and explain they close between 2-5 pm everyday. They are "in transition" so the times were an error. She suggested a fast food place. Really? No. She then recommended Red Mesa to which some locals moaned that it hadn't been good in a while. So this old hotel wants guests but providing standard amenities of food or drinks isn't possible? read more

Had dinner with the family. Service was good. Food was even better. I had the ribeye and it was cooked perfect. Wife had the chicken, she loved it. The atmosphere is nice. The place can get a little loud. I think this has to do with the acoustics and the room. But we had a great time. We had just mentioned to our waiter that it was my daughters 4th birthday. Came here for dinner and drinks on Monday and was impressed by the ambiance. The waitress was nice but seemed really busy so we found ourselves having to wait for things a bit longer than normal. My husband and I stopped in to the Settles Hotel and restaurant on a whim. We were passing through Big Spring, Tx, where all you can see for miles around are oil pumpers, huge windmills and businesses that serve the oil industry. The Settles Hotel is a newly renovated Hotel and restaurant that was originally built in the 1930s. Every detail was there from a Model T car in the lobby to the light fixtures in the restaurant. We had an early morning breakfast on a Monday morning . The server was excellent and attentive to our needs. She answered all our questions about the menu and the history of the hotel. We enjoyed our breakfasts( I had the Belgium waffle with fresh strawberries and my husband had the western omelet) It was a fun and surprising change from the monotony of the road through West Texas. If I ever pass through Big Spring again, I'll definitely go back! read more

We sat at the table for 10 minutes before waitress took our drink order. Then returned 10 minutes to tell us that they were out of merlot. Then 5 more minutes she brought our white wine. It was awful. Never have I tasted a Chardonnay like that. We looks at menu it was Woodbridge. Here is this really nice place serving a $4 dollar bottle of wine. Why? We sent to back and revived an equally bad glass that we could hardly drink. After we ate , the food was ok. Salmon and burger. We sat at the table during a rain storm for 30 minutes. We were not asked if we wanted dessert or another drink. Nor were our dirty dishes removed. So we decided to have a drink I the bar. NOT WINE. We sat a table I the bar for OVER 20 minutes and not one waitress came to the table or even acknowledged we were there! We left and will not be back. It's a shame Big Spring has this wonderful really nice place with service like this. read more

My fiancé and I have attempted to have a "nice meal" in Big Spring and our only option has been the Settles Grill. Every time we've tried to "give them another chance", we've learned why we really should just give up and drive to Midland instead. We have yet to have a good service experience at Settles in the 2 years we've been in Big Spring. Here is the most recent experience: It's Valentine's Day. We arrived at 7:50pm and put our name on the wait list and said we'd be in the bar. We were informed we wouldn't be seated until 9:30pm at the earliest. We said it was fine with us even though the dining room seemed to have several empty tables. We had called earlier in the day and they said they were booked. Okay, no problem. However, we sat down at the bar and the bartender's behavior was passive at best. She slammed bottles around and seemed as though she couldn't be bothered to serve us. I had to get up and search for a bar menu and order an appetizer... that never came. After we waited until after 9, we approached the hostess about being seated in an empty dining room and she said she walked though the bar "looking for people to seat and didn't see us" even though we were at the actual bar the entire time. We closed out at the bar (including the ghosted appetizer) and made our way into the empty dining room. We were seated (after some confusion amongst the host staff) and only then were we informed that they were only offering a pre fix menu. $70 in, we decided to leave. Settles customer service leave A LOT to be desired. We understand that this is a very small town but as the only "fine dining" establishment, they need to step up their game quite a bit. As someone who has spent over a decade in the service industry, I'm VERY forgiving but after this experience, I can no longer forgive. read more

Horrible experience! There were no less than five items we ordered, where the waitress came back to us and said they couldn't do it/didn't have it. Four out of seven of us ordered steak. When they came out all were overlooked. The waitress and the manager asked us perplexed if we wanted them to take them back! YES! When the steaks came back out to us they gave me the wrong steak and they still weren't cooked correctly. When we complained the managers response was to offer us free dessert and tell us they were training. By this time we were just done with this restaurant and asked for the check. They added the tip to each of our checks and then attempted to tax us for the tip. NOPE! Not gonna happen. They then sent the hotel manager to speak with us. As a good manager should do she asked what they could do to make it right. Although they should have comped us the horrible steaks, we asked for some type of discount. They ended up giving us a 50% discount, which was better than nothing. Again, just a HORRIBLE overall experience. Will most definitely not be going back again. read more

This place has such potential. But the service, especially in the bar is so irritating. My husband and I ordered food, I got mine, it was cold, and when I was finished eating he finally got his. Also they recently changed the menu in the restaurant, for the worse. They removed the tenderloin steak, which was one of the best steaks I'd ever had. The new pasta dish doesn't taste as good. And they started using new plates and bowls which are smaller, so you get smaller and smaller portions all the time. I really miss the tenderloin steak and the larger portions of salads they used to have. read more
