Biggest nightmare I have ever been through in my life. If you have an insurance claim be wary about them suggesting ServiceMaster, choose your own restoration company. The water dryout and demolition took forever mostly due to poor project management. Although initially a large crew came out to the house to start work, this grew smaller and smaller until there was basically just one guy sent out, and usually they weren't even sure what they were supposed to be doing. Also, when they did bother to coordinate with us to work on the house, often they would get called away to some other project after only working 5-10 minutes. Constant waste of our time just so they could have the convenience of moving their workers around whenever they needed. When the dryout part was done was when the REAL issues began. I made the mistake of letting them take over as contractors on putting the house back together instead of finding my own company, BIG MISTAKE. I could write a book about all that happened, but this is already getting long so I'll sum it up: Overcharged on everything, including on work that was never even performed. Incompetent project managers. I had to watch over everything just to make sure they were doing stuff right. Caught them in mistakes and outright lies so many times I lost count. I shouldn't have had to work so hard. Mismanagement of the estimate and failure in working within our insurance claim. We cut a ton of corners on materials and did a lot of the work ourselves in order to get some other work done on the house. After all the smoke cleared we had a house put back together with lower quality materials and no remaining funds. The worst part of our experience with ServiceMaster was all the stress we had to go through due to the issues listed above, including the house being unusable for almost a year, and countless other issues. I would never ask this company to do anything for us in the future, it just isn't worth the aggravation. read more

Insurance Restoration. House flood. Needed the entire downstairs, Main, utility, bathroom and bonus room restored. Upstairs kitchen, dining and living room, hallway and entryway restored. The mitigation Crew were awesome. Fast response. Dried things out. Determined extent of the damage. The demo guys were great too. That said ... As for "replace and restore" it was a nightmare. This company's project manager (Alicia) seemed communicative yet made a few dozen errors that greatly affected the outcome. Poor decisions like scheduling. Such that caused electricians and offsite contractors to make sub-par decisions. Ie Wallboard going up BEFORE 220 AC lines could be installed to code. Resulting in unsightly external conduit do be the final result. No time to redo. Was 365-day claim deadline. A few times one month would go by without a service call to the house, very little contact from Service Master Salem. I understand I was not their only customer but, hey! How about answering the phone or even a text? Received standardized Emails with minimal info. Eventually Alicia got less and less commutative. I suspect, due to my wishes to have the work done properly. instead of using inferior materials and work crews. Cheapest possible choices. Leaving the place a mess. Left trash inside and out. Cigarette butts. Spilled paint and caulk etc. Gaping holes in corners and seams. I ask them to correct the issues which I ended up doing myself. Poor workmanship. - Cut-outs for electrical plates. Hacked out oversize. Wall plates did not cover cut-outs completely even with extra large plates. :( - Delivering damaged goods ie: sinks, tubs and tile which caused more delays. Eventually ran down the clock to so I had to settle for inferior workmanship vs not finishing the project at all. Calling the project complete without finishing important features and cleanup. Lesson learned. I do NOT recommend this company for Repairing and/or Restoring a home. read more

We hired Service Master to do mold remediation/restoration, they did the demolition of our only full bathroom, and in part of our bedroom. They took out the moldy drywall, and when they were done we called the company to schedule the restoration. We were told by the project manager we were assigned that they weren't accepting new clients for restoration! I reminded her that we are current clients, not new clients, and she said we'd have to Google other contractors for help. No waiting list, no promises to get to us at a later date, they just dropped us. We contacted the manager, no help there either. When they did the demolition, they did it in such a way that we'll need to tear out ALL the drywall in the bathroom in order to put up new drywall in a way that looks good. The water mitigation side of this business did adequate work. Had some issues with communication but generally dried out the water damage and removed damaged materials with minimum mess. We had some water damage in our downstairs restroom. I repaired the leaks and found Black mold under the sink and in the walls. I went to one company that said they could do the mitigation but they don't do repairs. I then called Service Masters who told me they'd do it all. I went to their office and spoke with Melissa who reiterated that they would do all of the work. I signed the paperwork for them to begin and to contact my insurance company. One person initially came out and said that someone would follow-up. A few days later a crew came and started demolition by removing the vanity, toilet, floor tiles and drywall from two walls. They then put some air driers and fans. Left the equipment for about 8 days to dry the wood. When they were done they had me sign a completion order. I asked about putting my bathroom back together and was told that I was just signing an agreement that the mold and dampness remediation was complete and another crew would come to put it back together. After a couple of days I called Melissa and she told me that she'd have Nicole Call to set up a time. Two days later I received an e-mail from Nicole (a copy of which I kept) that said, basically, "sorry Charlie, we're too busy and not taking in anymore jobs." They have since confirmed that they are not going to do my repairs and that they've already contacted my insurance. Implant for payment. These dishonest bastards have had my bathroom out of order for two weeks with the toilet, vanity and sink left in my garage. DO NOT USE THIS SORRY EXCUSE OF A SERVICE PROVIDER. Service Master was referred to us by our homeowner's insurance company. We have heard of them before but have never used them. They handled everything from the water mitigation, rip out of the damaged cabinets and floor, move out, repairs to the cabinets, replacement of the floor, repainting, and moving everything back in. There were some delays along the way but overall the project was done and completed to our satisfaction. An insurance agent from Idaho recommended Service Master. WHAT A NIGHTMARE!! We were out of a shower for three months, showering at the YMCA. They didn't order the right amount of flooring, forgot to order our shower door, and left the trim in the bathroom looking like a toddler piecemealed the whole thing together. We had a major ice storm here in Salem, Oregon and a large tree limb pierced our roof above our bedroom leaving a 4x4 hole in our roof. ServiceMaster contacted us through our insurance carrier within 4 hours of the damage and 2 hours of our phone call. They promptly sent a reliable, competent and professional crew to our home and had that hole covered with a tarp, thus preventing more water damage. As a customer of their Damage Restoration business I have never felt more under served before in my life. While the staff were friendly they were also pushing us to sign a contract to begin tearing into our walls. In the end, the work we did sign off on left our home in a position that there is actually more damage from our leaking roof than when they first arrived. Not only did we get charged $849 for them to place a tarp and a handful of sandbags on our roof in Jan, but they did not tarp up to roof cap, choosing instead to tuck the tarp under a row of shingles they lifted up to fit the tarp under. And even though we have added another tarp ourselves ($15.99) a few weeks laster, taking it up and over the over the crown, and overlapping their tarp, we still experience leaks, albeit diminished amounts of water. Sadly the damage inside our home continues to get worse as we wait for dry spell to happen so we can get the entire roof replaced. While the non-stop rain for the last few months is not ServiceMaster's fault, nor is it their fault that the roofing company needs a two day window of no rain to replace a roof; what is problematic is $849 for a single tarp, a handful of sandbags and about an hour of their time to only have the leak continue. Not only does this feel like we were extorted in a time of crisis, but it also feels like, in the eyes of this former customer, that they do not know what they are doing; If they did know what they were doing the leak would have stopped. Right? This complete and utter failure has cost us not only the original $849 they charged us for the tarp and sandbags, but now we have to replace all the walls and ceiling in our bathroom, where when we originally called, we were only going to have to replace a few small patches of drywall before. I am giving them two stars for two reasons; 1. They came as soon as they were called. 2. They were nice. One star for each. I am deducting three stars for the following reasons; 1. Their work did not stop the leaks and may have contributed to the ongoing problem. 2. Their prices feel exploitative ($849 for a tarp and sandbags) when you really don't have any other choice. 3. They were pushy to get us to sign a contract to begin demolishing our bathroom (as a part of their Damage Restoration work) even after we said we can't sign because we don't know yet what our insurance will cover. We have to get approval. For an organization that touts itself as being Christian-based in it's business principals, it would appear to this reviewer that ServiceMaster is more about the almighty dollar than providing quality workmanship at a fair price. read more

120 days ago my organization contracted with this company to do a $20,000+ job of restoring our building. They required $7,000 up front which we paid. Now, 120 days later, they still have not done the job! We used Service Master of Salem following burst water pipes in Jan '16. Final mitigation, repairs and settlements were not completed until late Sept '16. Throughout the entire process we dealt with excessive delays, lack of communication, disruption of services following the contractor being let go suddenly, and shoddy work and damages that had to be redone, repaired, or left "as is." Often we arrived at the house to check on progress only to find that nobody was there working. In addition, discounts that were promised were not honored (in part because the person who promised them was let go), and we repeatedly had to insist on repairs being redone because of the inattention paid to them on first, second, or third rounds. Lastly, invoices and statements were extremely vague and generalized rather then including a detailed itemization of the work. And when we received the final "estimate" (bill), it was so vastly different from the first estimate (in format, square footage, and descriptions), that it made comparing the two highly confusing and convoluted. Our attempts to request compensation and a settlement of the entire matter resulted in a less-than-satisfactory outcome that was ultimately just too tiresome to continue fighting. If you're considering using Service Master of Salem for mitigation work and home repairs, expect a pull-your-hair-out experience! They will seem helpful and attentive on the surface, but once the real work gets underway, you may end up extremely frustrated! Shop around. If you do use this company, lower your expectations WAY down. read more

When I came home and saw that my washing machine had flooded my entire upstairs...I panicked when I saw standing water throughout my house and didn't know what to do. Luckily, I was referred to use ServiceMaster of Salem and they were able to come out immediately and make me feel at ease. The nice young men who initially came out were very efficient and I was impressed with how quickly they got equipment setup. The girls I spoke with in the office were very helpful and explained how everything would work through my insurance since I had never gone through the process of filing an insurance claim before. They were able to replace my floors and got my home repaired and make the best out of a very stressful situation for me. We had a small fire in the back bedroom of our manufactured home. Service Master of Salem was on the spot within two days and told us all the things they would do. That was the end of anything good about them. They took all the bedding and clothes in the bed room and kept them for 3 months, the charge for this service was over $3000.00. They only brought them back after we told them we wanted them back. They made promised to fix everything. As it turns out they would only fix things after we had to ask them several times. For three months they never came out to do any work. After 5 months of them coming out maybe twice a week, to do the work we told them we didn't want them any longer. The original estimate was a little over $9,000.00 The final bill that they gave us was over $17,000!! That was not including the $3000.00 for the cleaning! They did not paint a room, fix a wall that left a open to the outside, clean carpet, replace a storm door, replace molding around a damaged door. The list goes on, one item they billed us for they never did. Our insurance company had to call them every week to get them to come out to fix items. I have had to do the promised work that they did not do myself. They are a terrible company for workmanship, and taking care of the customers.
