I called Day Energy Solutions to provide us an estimate to upgrade the installation of our fifties era house which we had recently purchased. The house was cold and the heat pump & furnace were running a lot. PGE said we were using substantially more energy than a household of our size should. Ahren from Day Energy came out to assess it. He pointed out that between our antiquated duct system and the old R-10 insulation we were heating the attic and wasting energy. Ahren showed us if we updated just the insulation that the inefficiency of the duct system would override the value of the new insulation.
Ahren put together a detailed project proposal to vacuum out the old R-10 insulation, seal all gaps, remove and replace all the old duct work and to blow in R-40 insulation. He also included an estimate to insulate the walls.
I had two other companies come out to give me estimates on if I need to replace the duct work and the costs. One company was said yes it needed to be replaced, did not provide a detail scope of the work and was about $1,200 less than Day Energy. The third company provided a summary of their work and their price was twice as much as Day Energy.
I also had insulation company provide an estimate. Their costs were comparable to Day's.
Ultimately we went with Day Energy Solution because of the confidence we felt in Ahren. He came out to the house multiple times to access the scope of the project as it changed from our initial conversation. Ahren knows his stuff, we felt confident we were hiring the right company.
The entire project unfolded as Ahren has said it would. His crew, Daniel, Juan and Geronimo, arrived every day at the same time to start work. They worked hard, cleaned the attic out of the old insulation, built a catwalk to the furnace, sealed everything, created new vents to increase air flow in the attic, replaced the old ducts, hauled off all the old debris and left the worksite cleaner than they found it. The crew were cheerful, kept me updated on their progress and what to expect the next day. The entire project took a week. Ahren was out multiple times during the week, he checked on the crews progress, provided analysis of the work and answered questions.
The moment I turned on the updated HVAC system I could tell a difference. The entire house feels tighter. On the coldest nights since the Day Energy Solutions work, the heat pump runs less and the house feels warmer. We have also seen a noticeable dip in our monthly PGE bill.
