Anthony from Service Now came out today to perform yearly furnace maintenance and give me an estimate on furnace ductwork.

Dennis was kind enough, since I was a new homeowner to answer all my questions, make recommendations on filters and review my thermostat with me. He even provided & put in new batteries in the thermostat for me. Super experience, very affordable. I highly recommend Ron's Heating & Air of Sycamore.

You are right I am not a expert in heating and cooling that is not my profession. I hired another company turns out there was a leak in the fiberglass tape that caused the issue. Ron's heating blamed the builders saying not enough insulation or etc. Well you're wrong. You guys come to my house for 10 minutes . Yes it's on camera you can say different but it shows when you stepped in the doors and drove off. Total 12 minutes. You guys want to charge me a diagnostic fee FOR WHAT? You guys didn't diagnostic the issue another company did within 30 minutes. Get a second opinion before hiring this company because they are a one sided company and that side only Benefits them. I have my newborn room with improper heat coming into the room. It's 61 degrees when the house is set to 70 degrees and they blame the builders when it was due to their issue that they didn't even diagnose another company did. JOKE of a company. I tried paying the diagnostic fee that I honestly shouldn't because they rushed and didn't even spend the time to figure out the cause. They wanted to charge me a 3% fee for a debit card. Then they tried to charging me for a visit the the prior owner did and never collected on me. The owner wife was trying to pull a fast one on me then said ohh sorry I didn't realize it was a different name. Luckily I asked my total before providing my debit card number

This is my first review, EVER: (Once upon a time we had the Yellow Pages to help us find reputable…read moreservices....Uncle Ted provided reviews!) DeKalb Mechanical has serviced my furnace 3 times in the 6 years since I've owned my home, and this week assisted in a chimney replacement. I chose DeKalb Mechanical because the brand new furnace had been installed by them before my purchase. Andy & Charles have always listened patiently to my frantic description of the problem and sent repair technicians within the day. The techs are consistently courteous and knowledgeable and pretty good about cleaning up after themselves.. The final charge always seems high to me - they're probably competitive - I'm "old", living on a fixed income, and think any service costing more than $200 is too much! I've been particularly crabby these last two weeks when I finally established that my various furnace issues have most likely been related to a roof leak adjacent to the chimney. (Had the roof repaired in 2019!) The first estimate blamed the flashing, and bid $2000 for the flashing and a plywood/shingles replacement. A second estimate with a different roofer found NO issues with the flashing but said there was no cap - estimated charges $400. (I liked the 2nd bid better, but even I could see the flashing was rusted out.) Finally, the first contractor proposed replacing the brick chimney & flashing with a B-vent, requiring the coordinated assistance of my HVAC people - the best estimate was 2 grand for the roofer and not more than $1000 for the furnace folks. My final charges:$2850. I was fuming when I completed the review - assigning only 2 stars. (I've spent thousands of $ on roof repair and furnace servicing and the leak was probably present before I bought the home!) But that is NOT THEIR FAULT!! Before the ink could dry on my review Nathan, DeK Mech's man that oversaw the project, was at my door to find out what he (they) did wrong! Nothing. They did nothing wrong. They did it ALL RIGHT. Arrived an hour before originally scheduled, performed their work efficently and worked as a team with the roofers. I'll be calling DeKalb Mechanical this fall before I start the furnace for the season. Keeping my fingers crossed!

He cut out and replaced a couple copper pipes related to the washer that was leaking. He also replaced our two bathroom fixtures. He helped us pinpoint where a vibration that could be felt from the hot water coming on.. it just turned out to be from the water heater! And it was all good! It was good to have a hearing person let us know if it was a problem or not. He was very honest and easy to work with. We definitely will call and ask for him again. An estimate is not labor, but rather an approximate or tentative judgment about what conditions a worker will encounter and, additionally for parts that may be needed...in other words, an assessment for a potential job, no labor, work or exertion at this juncture. An employee of a company (let's say plumbing) arrives, to provide an estimate, per your request. Said employee jots down some notes -- no labor involved. Said employee then proceeds to get on a stepladder to take a quick peekaboo at an attic (the said person didn't actually go IN the attic, still assessing, and no labor or work. After a few minutes, said person immediately heads out to his truck, only to return with a hefty bill of $195 for w h a t?? you might ask. When will I get the estimate? It could be a very BIG surprise for the unsuspecting customer, but let's face it, it sure seems like working at some places can be quite lucrative because they don't actually provide an estimate--just a bill for the drive to your home. A great gig if one can get away with it. Of course, the employee does not do one bit of actual work, nor is he expected to work. You merely made a call to the company requesting an estimate so you know what the job and the cost will entail if you should choose to hire them. You're out $195 with no estimate. It's a 100% win for this company. Too bad for you, silly customer. An innocent person might suspect that this is kind of a shady practice (oops, saying shady - --that wasn't nice ---sorry). To N O T notify people to expect a $195 fee at the time of the initial call for Nothing-- one might wonder who does that? They should at least notify you that they plan on doing nothing when they arrive & hand you a bill for nothing. Does that seem wrong to you? Just asking. Let's face it, businesses are free to charge as much as they can possibly grab from unsuspecting people. Right??! Yep, and most people have a tendency to expect ... oh, who knows, maybe, professionalism, integrity, credibility & trustworthiness. Hmm, wondering if this applies to, let's say possibly, any given plumbing business that might come to mind??? Any thoughts?? Respectfully P.S. You may be interested to know that professional, credible plumbers are out there and the best part is they don't charge for estimates. I know, I found several!!
