The miso soup was overly salty, and the seaweed wrapped around the tempura roll was soggy and tough to chew, which made it feel far from fresh. Came to celebrate our anniversary and had a great time at Sequoia. We arrived at 530 so it was still happy hours and started ordering one of everything thinking it will be small bites. Decorated for Valentine's, the was the perfect winter evening dinner date. Right across from Trader Joe's, the ambience was reminiscent of the old Greenbush neighborhood while still staying modern and elevated all at once. Staff were warm and welcoming, patient and genuine. Our pork bun appetizer was juicy, well-filled and pillowy. No complaints here! We tried the rakkasei dry ramen with a peanut base. Surprisingly, they retained the Japanese flavor with the seaweed sprinkle topping and the sauce was just the right amount, consistency and peanut flavor. Both sushi rolls lived up to my excitement: the cranberry smoke and aburi salmon. Both really well-rolled with the perfect rice texture and ratio, every bite was oh so yummy. Plating was super pretty and elevated too For drinks, I had a blue lagoon and while it was nice, the color and taste reminded me of Fanta blueberry but spiked, so it was not my favorite I did not finish it. We loved this place! I had no idea it was a sushi restaurant, but I see it every time I walk to Trader Joe's. I had the vegetarian ramen, and it was perfect. The broth was rich and savory, and the fried tofu was perfect. I would recommend eating the tofu first if you get this dish, as it gets soggy if you let it sit in the broth too long. The presentation of all of our dishes was beautiful, as you can see from the flaming sushi roll! Our waiter, Nathan, was absolutely amazing. He made us feel so welcome, made excellent suggestions, and was overall very kind. The restaurant itself was so cozy, and the decorations were so so cute. We came here for my birthday and were fairly underwhelmed. This place has potential but it fell short in every aspect. When we first arrived, the restaurant was mostly empty except three very tight tables on the left side. These tables are maybe 12 inches apart on one side, 14 inches on the other side. One side had a family of 4 including a baby , their car seat stroller wedged sideways blocking the side of the middle table. A foot away, a young couple whispering. The restaurant was so quiet, at 5 pm, you couldn't talk without being heard front to back. It baffles why, with at least 15 other tables, we would be led to this tiny table and made to squeeze into this tiny table to cuddle with the strangers nearby. We asked to move so we could talk to each other. It took several painstaking minutes to be moved, awkwardly looking at the cuddle buddies we rejected. We wanted to walk out and we should have. There was only one server, no bartender even to help. He didn't know how to make our drinks as he told us directly, saying he would "learn" how. When drinks are more than $10, I don't want it to be an experiment. Eventually another server showed up, both of them were nice enough people. I have to agree with other people, the food was all lukewarm, nothing great, certainly not worth the price. read more

We had a great lunch at Sequoia on Monroe Street! They had tasty and beautiful cocktails. I was delighted seaweed salad was on the menu - it's so fresh and I love the flavor. They offered us a free eggroll "snack" before our food came that was a surprise treat. Their lunch menu features two specialty rolls for $29. Not a bad deal, and food was very good and plated very artistically. I was about to say that the rolls weren't anything different, but there was one that really stood out. The cranberry smoke has seared ribeye, cranberry sauce, shrimp tempura, and cream cheese. Sounds weird? Maybe. But it was pretty great. We really liked the atmosphere- lots of wood, hanging lanterns, oh, and a nice tap beer selection, which felt unexpected for a sushi place. Service was kind. We will be back! read more

We were excited to try sequoia on Monroe. Cute location where brocach used to be. Street parking was easy to find and service was very attentive. We ordered drinks, seaweed salad, and 2 rolls. It left us satisfied but not amazed. If you're in the area and craving sushi it'll meet it, but otherwise nothing to rave over. I highly recommend the seaweed salad, it's not just the seaweed but comes with other greens. I also recommend the vilas sunrise roll! It was really great and made the experience. After my boyfriend mentioned it was my birthday, our server gave us a round of beers on the house, which was nice, but she didn't make it feel special. The sequoia ramen came out quickly afterwards and the broth was lukewarm, so by the time we got the rest of our food, it was cold. The philadelphia roll and flaming volcano roll were decent, but not spectacular. Overall the food was just ok (plated beautifully, tasted average) and the service was subpar - our server looked overwhelmed and we felt ignored. It seemed she was managing FOH alone. Although I feel for her, it's not an excuse for the lackluster experience. She failed to clear dishes and glasses off our table unless we tried handing them to her directly to make some room to eat. Oh WOW!! Can I just say this place is SIMPLY AMAZING!!! Sushi is so so good!! The fish was so fresh and the sushi was bursting with flavors. Love the decor and the vibe of the place. Service was excellent. Our server recommended the Cherry Blossom and Vilas Sunrise rolls and my oh my they were absolutely delicious. The Dragon and Torched tuna roll was equally good. If I could give zero stars, I would. My experience at Sequoia was awful. The service was bad-our server was nowhere to be found, and it took two hours for our food to come out. When it finally arrived, I almost wished it hadn't. The yellowtail had strange red dots on it (seriously, what was that?), and the salmon tasted like soap. Walked in and was kinda throw together type beat, in a good way. The food was good, we got gyozas and the sequoia deluxe, the gyozas were pretty good. The sushi that we got with the sequoia deluxe was good for the money sushi. I felt like maybe my expectations were probably too high. The service was not great, we were asked and what we wanted before receiving menus and the servers seemed un attentive as they were also putting out fires of slow food to table times. After about 44 minutes we received our food. But we also hear one table say they had waited an hour and a half. I believe they are going through a management change, so maybe this is a new thing. Had a wonderful meal here. The food was good, well-plated, seemed fresh and it's reasonably priced for what it is, by comparison to other Madison sushi restaurants. I felt bad for the server, though: Very young and not well trained. I saw the menu when I sat down and asked whether they serve nigiri and sashimi, or only just rolls. They were emphatic that they only serve rolls. As I read the menu, I discovered that they serve all types of sushi, so I ordered a nigiri and sashimi sampler. It was great. After this was finished, I asked if they made hand rolls and the server said, once again: "I've never heard of that so I think NO." I asked them to ask the sushi chef because they had been wrong about the nigiri and sashimi, and they were reluctant to do so but finally did. I'm sure I came off as a world-class jerk for presenting it this way, and felt bad about that. So I left a big tip, and wanted to follow up with a positive review and a suggestion: It's okay for servers to say: "I don't know, but I'll check." So many assume that they're required to know everything, particularly if they're young and new. But the only way to learn is to be humble and ask the question. I wish this server felt free to do this because it would've been a better experience for both of us. Otherwise, I'll be back! Please prosper! read more

Upon entering, we were immediately seated and the waitress took our drink orders. Everytime I come here, the waiters are always very attentive though I do have to say the food service is a bit slow. Anyways, I came back to find the menu has a few additions: Aburi Salmon Sky and Sea And so I ordered both along with the delicious Rakkasei noodles which are noodles tossed in a delicious peanut sauce. A while later, the food arrived and wow. It. Was. Amazing. A few things I look for in a great sushi restaurant is not only the taste but also innovation of their menu that asks the question, what does this sushi joint offer that makes it unique? I do want to preface this by saying - both our sushi and our bbq wings tasted good. Nobody had any complaints about the quality of the food. If you order pickup, or you go in on a date night for two, maybe you'd have a better experience than we did. We came for a birthday party, eight total, and called ahead. They told the birthday girl's partner that we didn't need a reservation with 8, though he told them we'd be there at 6:30. Why, then, did nobody tell him the bar was closing at 7 and the kitchen at 8 until we sat down? We were able to get one round of beer (a birthday inclusion, again, a nice gift!) but no last call offered. Our seating was right against the window, with no ability for the server to reach 6 of our party at all. We had to pass everything down, including drinks, sushi, and at one point a flaming sushi plate. It should be noted the restaurant was otherwise basically empty. If you only have one place to seat eight people, you should probably require a reservation, and if you're going to seat eight people at all, it should be somewhere where everybody can be served properly - if there was another option, why seat us there?? The food came out completely haphazardly. We were brought (and charged for) an extra roll of sushi, and it was probably 40 minutes between when the first plate was served and the last. The birthday girl got her plate last, too, and she did not order last. There was no rhyme or reason to how food came out, and different people's sushi orders were plated together. Waitstaff could not reliably identify which roll was which, either. The attention to detail at this place is just severely lacking. I understand we're a big party, but we tried to give them prep time and the care was just not given to making this a great birthday experience. It's too bad, because the food is quite good! Read about this place somewhere a few months ago and put it on my list. I specifically remembered it had ramen so that was the goal on this visit. However, it's mainly a sushi restaurant that also has ramen - they only have the "Sequoia" ramen and a veggie version. I also got the hot milk tea. The ramen I'd say is merely fine. The noodles are crinkled, if you care at all, and chewy. The broth was nice and hot and has a somewhat creamy flavor but not as much as tonkotsu. The toppings were rather sparse though, with only 2 pieces of pork and a couple slices of bamboo shoot. The egg is a regular soft-boiled egg, not ajitsuke. I almost missed the corn because it all sank to the bottom so I didn't realize it was even there until the end. This is also the only type they have, as I mentioned, so I'd recommend the other specialty ramen restaurants in town if that's what you're looking for. The milk tea's sweetness and flavor reminded me of bottled and powdered versions - which I mean as a good thing because I like those! Versions made fresh from milk and tea can vary a lot. They don't have boba but if you like royal milk tea I definitely recommend this. Didn't get any sushi so I can't speak to the quality there. The interior was fancier than expected, maybe some holdovers from Brocach? My husband and I dined in for a date night at Sequoia. The ambiance has a romantic vibe and perfect for a date night. We started out our meal with two beers which to our surprise were a nitro draft which was an interesting surprise. We thought maybe our beers were flat tasting but when we asked our waitress she told us that they were a nitro draft. If this would have been specified on the draft list I'm not sure we would have chosen it but it was nice to try it. We ordered a couple of rolls and a bowl of Rakkasei noodles to share. The sushi rolls were quite tasty our favorite was the cranberry roll. It's was sweet yet savory at the same time. For the price point of the sushi, we did expect a little more flavor from the rolls. Our noodles with pork belly were quite disappointing. The pork belly was as thin as a piece of paper.The noodles themselves were okay but nothing special about them. Overall I'm glad we gave Seqouia a try but when comparing to the other sushi spots in Madison, Seqouia doesn't meet the mark. read more
