My mom and I, both life-long drug store make-up users, decided to go for a make-up consult on a Friday afternoon when she was visiting, and it was a lot of fun! We were both interested in getting some tips on foundation and make-up application ( I rarely, if ever actually wear make-up and my mom wears very little ) and we were pleasantly surprised by the service. It took a while to flag down a sales associate (even midday on Friday), but once we did, we were helped by Sue Bostani, who was very honest and not at all pushy. I was concerned that if I had my make-up done, the person helping me would try to sell me a bunch of different things that I didn't really need, but Sue was very sensitive to the fact that my mom and I are minimalists, which we really appreciated. The store was busy, and I'm sure she was as well, but she took time out with us and didn't rush our service. She sold us both on some awesome foundation and made my mom feel like a million bucks, which was the highlight for me. Would definitely go back sometime (probably on a weekday to avoid the crowds), and would recommend Sue! She was great! read more

I absolutely love Sephora! (Shout out to Edward - my stylist LOL). I love their products, their staff, and the store in general. I love MAC too, but what keeps me going back to the Sephora is their variety and of course their frequent buyer program. I've had nothing but great experiences with Sephora. The only thing negative that I can say is keep my products in stock!!!! Carol's Daughter for instance, the selection is not that great and they don't have a lot of the products. Sephora also ran out of another one of my makeup products, which caused them to lose about $50 to MAC. So keep it in stock, and keep up the good work. read more

Sephora has always had great products and a ton of choices. My critique lies with the service. My experiences have ranged from the snotty biotch who corrected my pronunciation of "Lorac" to some really nice people who have helped me a lot. Last time I was in, a very helpful guy found the perfect eyeshadow for me. He must have smelled my ineptitude from a mile away as I stood there for 10 minutes looking at a sea of shadows with a pained expression on my face. He asked if he could help me. "Yes" I replied, "I suck at applying eyeshadow and I'm looking for a neutral color with some sparkle to it". Five minutes and $19 later I was on my way out with the perfect Stila eyeshadow. Had it not been for him, I would have done what I usually do, which is to pick out the most garish color (ooooh sparkly lime green!) and applied it till I looked like I was going for a (poorly executed) hooker look. As with any store, it can get super packed on the weekends. Service can be hit or miss, just be patient and look for a sales associate who looks friendly. This is definitely the worst location ever. Very condescending staff. I am a VIB rouge member and today will be my last time in this store! I wanted to pick up facial cleanser during my visit today. I didn't know which would brand or type I wanted so I asked the staffs. They were very rude and step aside and gossip about me very angrily saying "I am not dealing with this today." The employees really take the time to make sure you know how to use the products and which ones are right for you. You can sample basically anything here and they're incredibly nice about it and give you solid recommendations. They don't work on commission, so I always appreciate when they don't just rave about everything and tell you the truth. My first step into the store was like walking on to a movie set you didn't want to leave. Great selection of products, as can be found at most Sephora stores, and a really fun sampling dynamic. However, with my many trips to this store in the last two years (spending over $100 each time) I must say I have felt belittled by the pretentious staff each and every time. I live in center city and I don't drive, but if I did I would frequent other Sephora stores instead of this one. On occasional trips to the suburb malls I never felt as alienated and uncomfortable as I did at this particular branch,which is a shame because I live down the street and am a sucker for awesome beauty products. So, great products, fun play testing, but really rude ass bitches on the floor, I'd like to note that every time I have checked out my cashier has been most gracious and polite. Seriously every time I came here someone different was a total asshole for no reason except being threatened with actually doing their job. But I still love Sephora for helping me find the products I love (through no help from the staff), thanks for that, now I can buy them all online from a different store. First of all, the location is amazing. It's bright and welcoming and easy to find your way around. However! After being to this place a couple of times I can honestly say the service is quite horrid. The first time I went I scheduled an appointment to get my make up done. 1. It took me forever to get the attention of a sales associate, I felt as if they were all avoiding me. 2. When I actually found someone, they sat me down and I has to wait for another 20 mins, for them to finish whatever they had to do, when the store was basically empty. 3. After I finally was helped, I told her exactly what I wanted and she did the complete opposite. (It still came out AMAZING!) but still she should have asked first. That was my first experience. Since the location is very convenient, I have no choice but to go here. and my other experiences were even worse when it came to the sales associates, but since I love the brightness of the location and the layout of the store I gave it three stars. It seems ridiculously silly, almost petty, to review a chain store like Sephora, but this particular location is so unpredictable that it's worth mentioning. I have nothing against the products or the product selection, mind you -- Sephora always comes out on top when it comes to their wide selection and fair pricing. However, the service fluctuates like crazy -- I've had decent service from the salespeople who mind the skincare products at the back, but been absolutely ignored (and when I say ignored, I mean I've been walked away from) at the makeup section of the store. It's a shame, because I generally have a good idea about what to buy for skincare, but need a ton of help when it comes to makeup. Maybe they don't like my desperate face? Sadly, the service has been so bad that I've just about resigned myself to their online store or the King of Prussia location, where they're just a shade friendlier and more helpful. read more

WOW!! I can't say better things about ALL the employees here. I went next door to Blo-Out bar and had the worst experience!! But Sephora redeemed them. They went above and beyond. I hated my fishtail braid I got done next door and mentioned it so they offered to fix it for me. And they did a way better job than the hairdresser at Blo-Out bar! Mind you this is a beauty bar NOT a hair salon lol. The girl that approached me helped me pick out the perfect lashes. Super friendly, then found me a seat with Alise who did my lashes perfectly. She even offered to do my wing liner and lower liner which I accepted. I got complements on my eyes all night. I only buy online these days, and I quickly ran in here to compare color swatches. This location was renovated since I last visited, so it looks a lot cleaner and more organized. Good job to Sephora on that end. As I was browsing, I noticed a staff member with another customer, and I could tell that he was genuinely interested in helping to find the best product for her. I hope Sephora management will continue to promote people like him. I only buy Clean Beauty, which is one of the reasons why I rarely come here. However I think this Sephora location has an opportunity to increase sales if it adds a Clean Beauty section with RMS, Ilia, and other natural beauty brands. According to the USDA, Pennsylvania is the #2 consumer of organic products in the country (surpassed only by California), and this interest in organic goods probably also applies to makeup. read more

If I had been a secret shopper at this store, they would have failed miserably. As a VIB Rouge member ($1000/year spend - addiction, I know) I spend a lot of time in these stores. I know what the standard for customer service IS at Sephora, and this store fell way below that line. I came in looking for a complimentary mini eye makeover (as advertised in EVERY store) to help me decide on a new eyeshadow palette. I approached the first available rep who told me to "wait in this area and someone will help you". TWENTY minutes later and I must have been ignored by at least 3-4 staff members. Even as I approached someone, she made eye contact with me and then continued talking to her colleague. Ignored. To add insult to injury, one client came up near to where I was standing, and TWO reps came to help him! I was chopped liver. When someone FINALLY came up to me and I explained that I had been waiting, she became defensive instead of apologetic and helpful. Unreal. I really love that I can sample makeup and other cosmeticsc here, especially for products for which it's important to test the color before buying (like foundation, blush, etc). They have an excellent free rewards program and even better online-only deals (always some coupons for free deluxe samples w/ some min purchase like $25). This Sephora's location makes for a crowded experience, since Chestnut street is loaded with lots of high-end stores to go in and out of. The staff are overly-friendly/helpful, but you know, if you need help, you're going to be happy, and if you're not in the mood, you're going to have to be assertive and tell them no thanks right off the bat or they do tend to hover. I also thing the hovering comes from shoplifters, so I can't blame them. This stuff isn't cheap! I know because every time I go in here I end up spending way more than I should. If you're looking for a good perfume, this place is great for getting small sample bottles of them. That way you can actually wear the scent for a bit and see if it's worth shelling out the big bucks! If you're looking for high-quality makeup and hairbrushes, they have a great selection, as well as hair products for everyone. Makeup, makeup, makeup. Went on a Saturday with my friend. She was interested in trying a new foundation. Someone did come over to see if we needed help. She basically took a sponge, swatted some out of the floor sample and put in on my friend's face. EEWWWW! Why didn't she sanitize it at least? She then was like I can clean a brush for you and left us to our own devices. Does Sephora not have floor staff that help you anymore or do you need to make appts now? Anyways she cleaned a couple of brushes for us and I basically helped my friend with her selection. Pros: The makeup was there. Staff tried very hard to help the very busy store.The store didn't smell like nail polish which some Sephoras do. Cons: The store's displays were very dirty. The applicators were empty and the garbage cans were filled to the brim. Didn't like how you have to give staff's names to prove they helped you. Now they are on the expensive side I have found great items in here from makeup, skincare, to perfume. The makeup brand I found to love is Makeup Forever, Benefit, and Sephora brand cosmetics. The skincare that I loved from Peter Thomas Roth blemish mask it was $40 but I have had it for about 2 years now and it help even my esthetican even sells the product. I must get some more. The sales associate I spoke to seemed to have her butt glued to the wall behind her because she pointed me across the room and wouldn't budge. I love Sephora and since they're a chain there is not much difference between each store. However, I find this one to have unhelpful/unapproachable sales people. Stopped by this location on Sunday with a need for new moisturizer and a good face wash. Armed with a full paycheck, I was prepared to drop some major pennies for products that will benefit my skin (I have sensitive and at times very red skin). While in the skincare section I failed to receive any help from the sales associates. Being a Sunday I wasn't dressed to the nines and felt that I was being ignored due to my rather laid-back appearance. I did however find a very nice lotion with colloidal oatmeal (First Aid Beauty- Ultra Repair Cream) on my own which I am very pleased about. Also, a 6 ml roll-on bottle of L'Eau d'Issey, a perfume I've been meaning to wear, but unsure whether I wanted a whole bottle, this small roll-on is the perfect compromise. I did not find a face wash, but a sample of Clarins cleansing milk was put in my bag at the register, which I think I will purchase. I love Sephora. I just love it, love it, love it!!! I can get hard to find skin care, perfume & hair care stuff right in Philly without waiting days to get it online. My only issue-pricy costs. I have to pay $36 for 1.4oz of an oil free, sensitive skin moisturizer. It sucks, really sucks but having sensitve, oil free skin that doesn't turn red or flake means alot to me. This Sephora is hands down the best I've ever been to and as an esthetician I've been to A LOT. The location itself is large and super clean and the staff is attentive and friendly. The testers weren't gross and dirty either. They have great lighting and their makeover counter is right near the front window so it's done in natural lighting which is so important. I'm pretty good at color matching myself but always like a second opinion and Hunter was so helpful and retouched my entire face for me after I picked out a new foundation! read more

I made an appointment to get my makeup done before a party, and Justin did a flawless job. I received tons of compliments and it gave me such a boost in my confidence! The location of this store is great--very much in the center of one of the main shopping districts. The sales associates with whom I spoke with seemed very polite and knowledgeable. I don't usually wear makeup, but I was looking for a very basic, natural look for job interviews, etc. and I was able to get some good recommendations from some sales associates. The lines carried are more high-end than drugstore brands, so the prices will be higher, but some good deals can be found on the private label. And the range of colors is much better than in drugstores--I have an olive skin tone that is difficult to match, but I was able to find a foundation powder that works for me. One downside is that this store is crowded. The lines aren't usually too bad (about a 5 minute wait), but it's difficult to navigate the store. I always feel like I'm in a maze. My experiences at this Sephora are similar to those other Yelpers have expressed...customer service is hit or miss. Some of the employees are helpful, others are terrible and are either entirely absent or have no idea what they're talking about. My most recent experience is what prompted me to write this review. I attempted to return an item to Sephora without a receipt. One reason I have shopped religiously at Sephora is their excellent return policy. This time, when I went to return my item (a $20 item, mind you), the employee asked for my VIB number. She looked up my account and said she didn't see the item on my account and ask if I always give my VIB number. I explained that I only do when asked, but I definitely bought the item from Sephora because it's a made-for-Sephora item (so I couldn't have gotten it elsewhere). Her response was, "Well, it's not a question of WHERE you bought it but IF you bought it" implying that I stole the item. She took the item back after admonishing me. I was absolutely disgusted. I emailed Sephora customer service and they said the store manager would get back to me in 5-7 days. 2-3 weeks later, no response. I emailed AGAIN. The assistant manager from the store finally emailed me apologizing and offering me a make-up application and gift bag. Nice gesture, but too little too late. Sephora had better step up its game, especially now that Ulta is in town. Just sayin' read more

I'm a tad surprised at myself that I have yet to write a review for this Sephora yet. Here we go.. Pros: 1) This location is huge! 2) Everything is clean and all of the price, 95% of the time, are aligned perfectly on the shelf. 3) They're usually young men in suits at the front door to greet you. Cons: 1) For the first few times that you are here, the layout is overwhelming. The cashiers are right in the center of the entire store. The signs that indicate what section is for which brand are not that clear. 2) Don't be surprised if you are not asked by an employee if you need help. Most of them will blatantly ignore you and continue on with their business. 3) It's hard to find staff that can or are willing to help you. For example, I asked a young lady if she could help me find something. She said she was with another customer. I found this odd because there was not a customer standing next to her. Whatever. She proceeded to say that she will ask a fellow co-worker to help me. Perfect. I continue waiting in that spot for close to 5 minutes without any help. I doubt she even asked anyone to come over and help me. Nonetheless, I got sick of waiting and continued on my merry way. 4) Theres a good chance that you will be in line for up to 10 minutes. I don't know how this is when they're 4 registers but it is what it is. Prepare to wait in a line if you plan to come here for your lunch break. My best tip: know what you want before you even enter into the store. Most of the employees are not helpful and seem as though they do not even want to help you in the first place. Your better off just researching the product on your own and then going to the store to purchase it. read more
