Not greeted at the door despite two people posted at the entrance, chatting up a storm about their cosmetics. Total self service. Never once asked if I needed anything, so finally just bought one item and didn't care to shop any more. Place reeks of perfume and displays were just okay. I will give them credit for saying "thank you" as I left. Just believe that ageism is blatantly apparent, so do yourself a favor and shop at Ulta in Petaluma, where they understand customer service. I had a wonderful experience here! I always do. Whether I come in here dressed to please with my make up and hair on point or I come in with both my kids in my double stroller, no make up and messy bun they are ALWAYS helpful. I am a very approachable person, I smile and make eye contact. And the ladies in here always respond in a helpful manner. Sephora has SO much product! I mean I could spend thousands in here monthly. Coming in here is fun because I always have something on my list that I must have, a basic in my beauty routine, but I always look to leave with something new each visit. And for me that something new always requires the guidance of the knowledgeable associates here. Every time I stop in here for makeup, skincare or perfume, I leave with more than I planned for. But it's always great. The ladies that work here are so helpful and go above and beyond to ensure I find the right products. Today I came in looking for the right wedding eyeshadow and Negar took such good care of me. She expertly applied some eyeshadow of my choice and added eyeliner to help complete the look. The preview helped me decide to go ahead and purchase the mini palette. Just your typical Sephora. Makeup here, makeup there, makeup everywhere. Any other Sephora would get four stars, but I'm deducting two stars for the Novato location. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but do not come to this store with a reusable shopping bag unless you want to feel like a criminal. Yeah, I'm talking about the same type of bag that's commonly used for grocery shopping, except I also like using mine to go crap-I-want-but-don't-really-need shopping. Before coming into this Sephora, I went shopping at the Target next door, bought some stuff, and put it my reusable bag with it. I then move on to Sephora. Everything was all cool at first. I already knew what I wanted and went straight for it. Pauline D. wanted to try on some lip gloss because she has lipglossiosis, an obsessive compulsive lip gloss purchasing disorder. She was taking awhile so I decided to kill some time by trying some on, too. One sales associates asks us if we need any help with the makeup products or applying makeup. No, thanks, we got it covered. I ask Pauline D. about non-smearable eyeliner and I opt to sample her recommendation. One of the cashiers seems to be eyeing us. As I'm applying it on, blind as a bat without my glasses on, another sales associate asks us if we need any assistance. We politely decline. After applying the eyeliner, Pauline D. says it looks "aight" so I get the last black eyeliner left. Now that I'm holding $40 worth in purchases in my hand, maybe it won't make it look like I'm just sampling on their products and the sales associates will leave me the heck alone. We wander to the perfume section and look around. Another sales associate asks how we're doing. Doing good, thanks. We wander to the nail polish section and Pauline D. gets a bottle. Another sales associate asks if we're doing okay. We're doing okay. At this point, we're ready to pay and get out of this store. As we're paying, the cashier quickly packages our purchases into a Sephora bag. I said that we can just stick our purchases in our reusable bag so that the Sephora bag could have a second life. As I'm shoving our stuff into my reusable bag, I see from my periphery that she's shadily peering into my bag. WTF? Either you're being obnoxiously nosy or you think I stole shizit from this store. Maybe both. Look, I've worked in retail for several years so I know what it means to be a good sales associate and go around asking customers if they need help in order to increase sales and customer satisfaction. That's just fine, but I really don't need to be asked four freakin' times. I also know that approaching a customer is a passive-aggressive loss prevention tactic. Like I said before, maybe I'm just being paranoid and misinterpreting the events that took place. Geez, can't I just use my reusable bag because I want to do what little I can to help the environment and not use plastic and paper bags? Sigh. Saving the world is such a unappreciated job. After several swing & miss experiences at this store, I've been compelled to finally write a review. As much as I looooove Sephora (VIB Beauty Insider - meaning I've spent well over $500 in a year), this store is a major disappointment. Every time I go in, I have to struggle to find anyone to help me. Knowing this, I usually a) bring a friend to play with, rather than counting on the advice of the employees or b) research the products I'm looking for online so I know what I'm going to grab. Even so, sometimes I need a little guidance in locating what I need; the staff I've encountered make me feel like an inconvenience for asking where I can find my fav mascara on the shelf. Probably the worst experience that sticks in my mind happened a few weeks ago when my sister & I were perusing the Bare Minerals eyeshadow. One of the employees, who was assisting another customer, stepped in front of us & grabbed the shadow I was reaching for. Without so much as an "excuse me," she actually brushed my belly (I was 32 weeks pregnant) and practically pushed us aside. I would expect nothing less than such rudeness from the elitist clientele, but not from a staff member! (Maybe they are on commission. If so, I can understand the need to push aside a lowly preggo in favor of someone who might be more spendy-spendy.) I looked at my sis to see if I was overreacting & she was clearly as shocked as I was. Not that I expect the royal treatment, but a simple "excuse me" would have been nice. That one incident aside, I still have never felt that my business is wanted or appreciated at this location. It seems like a chore to help me, and its come to the point that I'd rather spend my money at Sephora.com (and get the free samples!) than inconvenience the employees at this store. I live in Cotati, so it's easily a 20 minute drive to this location in Novato. I'll be thrilled when ULTA opens up in Santa Rosa and I'll finally have another beauty option in the area. I don't have to go here,there and to the ends of the earth to get whatever i need, it's all right there. But I find the associates a little disconnected with their customers. Sometimes they can make you feel a little unwelcomed. I visited this store 2 days ago. There was an associate standing next to the door at the her counter. She didn't welcome us when we entered. She looked at us and then looked back down. I found it to be rude. I don't think I will be visiting the Novato store again. I love Sephora. Too much in fact. So much that I think my boyfriend fears any day that I come home and say, "Guess where I went". I've generally never had an issue with any of the stores. I have one comment on something that happened at the Novato store on Sunday 07/22 that, if I'd written this on Sunday night would have resulted in 1 star. Now that it's getting amusing with time, it bumps up to two. I went to a bbq Saturday and managed to get a pretty nasty sunburn despite frequent SPF apps. I was wearing a scoop-neck t-shirt because it didn't rub my chest or the back of my neck. I was RED, and sore. I was standing in the back, talking to an employee who was putting together a couple of samples for me, when another employee in the back room walks out, walks up to me, pokes my sunburn on my collarbone/chest area and says, "Boop!" laughs and walks away! Luckily, I can laught it off. BUT: 1) Never, ever, ever, ever (did I mention ever?), touch a person without their permission. Ever. Ever, ever, ever. 2) It's a SUNBURN. Why in God's name would you think it's okay to touch it? On a stranger. (See #1) 3) When said stranger, says "Ouch! Sunburns hurt" Don't laugh and walk away. 4) Repeat #1 4 days later I'm still in a state of disbelief that she did this. I'm sure she's nice enough, but WHO DOES THAT?? I can tell you who does that. A Sephora employee at Vintage Oaks. I will not describe her, because if she ever should read this she'll know who she is and hopefully realize that that was not, not, not her smartest move. I hope she'll think twice before randomly touching a stranger, that she is not currently helping, nor does she know, that HAS A SUNBURN. Love the products...despise this store. Today was my third and final trip to Sephora/Novato. The only reason I went back after my first two disastrous trips was that I received a gift card for Christmas. Darn!! I wish the gift-giver chose Nordstrom. I'm putting the gift card on Ebay for a discount just to get rid of it and not have to deal with the associates! They are rude, don't care if you buy something or not, and I was made to feel extremely unwelcome from the minute I walked in the door. In other words, it was the exact same experience as the first two times. I vowed not to return the first time, but thought it was maybe a fluke. Went back a second time: same thing! I went in yesterday with my friend to sephora and the whole time we were there they followed us as if we were going to steal. Every aisle we went to, they were there making it seem like they were fixing products. When we paid my friend told the manager (Lee?) that the girls were following us as if we were going to steal and she said very sarcasticly "oh no! Their just stocking up" they clearly weren't. I' ve been to other sephora's and I've never had this happen to me. If they were worried of us stealing they should have checked their cameras and called us out. I am so pleased to write a review for Berenice who works at this location! Many times I walk into beauty stores just hoping for someone willing to take the time to match my skin tone and help me look my best. Berenice immediately engaged me with enthusiasm to help and so easily matched my foundation color (which is not an easy task for many and for me with fair and freckled skin seems impossible). This review is less about make-up and more about the service from the team. I thought I lost my phone in the store during a quick shopping trip, and asked one of team members there if I could use an iPhone to use the Find My Phone app. One of them graciously let me use their phone and when we located where it was on the map, the store manager let that associate step off the floor and help me track it down. We eventually found it in a crevice on the side of my passenger car seat, but wanted to give a shout out to Katie for helping me find my phone and the store manager for letting her run around the center to help me find it! I am a huge fan of Sephora based on what they are known for, providing a wide variety of options and their great customer assistance. I have never had a Sephora trip in which I wasn't approached by at least 2 sales assosiates and I am sad to say that was far from the case at this location. The make up that I have used for many years has discontinued so I was looking forward to the assistance of having help discovering a new love of a brand. Over my 30 minutes of wondering throughout this store comparing, well not really sure what I was comparing, I was unapporoached completely. I was 1 of 3 customers to their 5-ish employees. Yes, of course, I could've easliy asked for assistance after sooo long but I honestly felt that if they didn't have the desire to approach and assist me, then they definietly wouldn't be that great of help when I burdened them with my needs. I somehow came out great and really love the products that I purchased and I will continue to use Sephora, but this location....uh, ouch...no thanks!! Sephora is a 5 star shop by far. This location is especially great. While smaller than the SF shops, I've always found what I'm looking for and the aisles are still big enough to roam freely when crowded. The staff here are super sweet, nice, and helpful. The greatest thing though... Sephora now has a rewards program! THANK GOD! Now I feel like my unrelenting vanity and narcissism has value and a purpose. I WANT MY FREE GIFT DAMMIT! I've never been looked up and down head to toe so judgmentally in my entire life as I have by the women working at this Sephora. What gives? Also, when I'm lucky enough to have someone ask me if I need help, I don't get the whole "let me radio in someone to help you" business. I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars. This particular store has everything they all seem to have, and most of the sales clerks are very knowledgeable and approachable, but some are simply not very nice; they don't want to be bothered with we normal looking folks - I guess you have to be beautiful to win their attention. So they lose a bit of star power because of the attitude. The product selection is pretty good. I like the array of brushes. They have a 5 piece microfiber brush kit for $38 that's really nice. I like microfiber because it doesn't retain gunk as easily as natural hair. It also cleans far easier. The science behind it has come a long, long way since the old days of scratchy, stiff, thick bristled brushes, making microfiber my preference to animal hair. Sephora also sells my make up (Bare Escentuals), which means I don't have to bully my way into a parking space and elbow my way through the Marina for my refills. That part is quite useful! The prices vary greatly between brands and quality. For the young girls that plaster themselves over - they can buy the cheap stuff at the drugstore, or the decent stuff here. I'm trying to get my beautiful niece to start using better stuff -- and this is a starting point. read more

Let's be clear-- the 4 stars are for Norma. I love her x1billion. I went in to the store, 10 minutes before closing without realizing it, and told her I was looking for THEE perfect Nicki Minaj pink without being an obnoxious Nicki Minaj pink. She went right over to the exact color I didn't realize I was looking for, I tried it on, and -- boom -- perfection. She didn't rush me, and helped me find a couple other things I had been wanting but didn't know too much about until I had exactly what I wanted. She never made me feel guilty about walking in right before closing, and I so appreciated that. I know that can be annoying, but I had driven to Novato from Mill Valley just to go to that store and she made the trip worthwhile. I went in another time and told her I wanted to do the cat-eye thing. No problem. She picks out the Stila liquid liner (that I now can't live without), the Marc Jacobs mascara (lengthening, which I love), and gave me a free sample of a product that holds the liner in place all day. Then she not only showed me how to do the cat-eye, she wrote down step-by-step instructions on a little sheet of paper for me to take home. I'm now rockin' the look on the regular. I love her. I do have to say that the women who ring you up are a little stingier on the free samples than other Sephora's I've frequented. I'm not trying to hustle them out of product, but I have purchased products from the samples I've taken home. My absolute favorite mascara (They're Real- Benefit) was from a sample I had taken home in February. I juuuust tried it on after my Marc Jacobs ran out, and its my new favorite! I went into the store raving about it and bought two of them. The woman at the register smiled and gave me one sample of acne cream, which I will never use. I was actually fairly surprised to see as many negative reviews as I did, but it does make me wonder what the circumstances were. How did you treat the employees, what was YOUR attitude like, were you having a good day to begin with? Having always worked in customer service, I know it's important to keep your composure and "kill 'em with kindness" even if a customer is belittling you or giving you a hard time, but we're all human. For every action there's a reaction and you get what you give. If you're having an off day yourself and being a bit snippy, you're probably not going to get much back... And hey. Novato is what it is. Hush. ANYWAY. I totally love this Sephora. I'm pretty positive that I've received a compliment from at least one of the girls working here every time I've come in, which is always very sweet and makes me happy. They do have the tendency to be very aggressive with assistance, but honestly I just don't care that much. It doesn't really bother me to say "No thank you" a few times, and there have been a couple of occasions in which I've ended up saying, "....Actually, yeah. I've been standing here trying to compare these two products for like 30 minutes and I totally do need help." So it's whatever. Speaking of help, I don't know what the turn around rate is for employees at this store because I just became makeup-crazed about two months ago (Like, shopping here anywhere from 1-3 times a week), but the girls that have assisted me know their stuff. In fact, no joke, the reason I started becoming more interested in makeup is because I came to this store on a whim one day looking for a new foundation and admitted to Raquel (Who is a sweetheart, fabulous, flawless, etc.) that I didn't know how to apply bronzer and she was happy to show me how and make excellent recommendations according to my preferences. I could go on and on. I've never been disappointed in my service. And in my experience they'll hook it up with samples if you ask them to. Now, my issues and reason I'm not giving this location 5 stars- I feel like the fragrance section is kind of lacking just a lil bit. I wish they carried the TokyoMilk Dark products that are available on the website. I just don't really see any new or interesting perfumes come through very often. But what really bothers me is that almost every time I come in one of the things I'm looking for is out of stock. I never feel welcome when I go in, I have to constantly ask to get some help and when I do and I get "help" they seem to not want to help me. There is a lady who helped me and I wanted advice on a foundation. I had bought it and I hated it and telling her about it and I felt like she scolded me and felt offended for me not liking that particular foundation. She just seemed like she didn't want to be there and the only reason she was helping me because she had to. I felt so unwelcome and I never want to set foot in there again. I love this store! First of all, it's easy to park and you don't have to walk through a mall to get to it. The people who work there are super knowledgeable and friendly. They are completely patient with my indecisiveness (which is legendary). My favorite day at this store was when one of their workshop teachers spent literally over 30 minutes with me (not during a workshop..just as a walk-in). He spent that time matching me with everything from what lipstick color best suited me to changing my whole face-wash/toner/lotion regimen from an intense and expensive, multi-step routine into a super simple (with less expensive products) one which has improved my complexion dramatically. I cannot live without the Boscia skincare products anymore. There are always people available to help me and they have turned me on to many, many products that have become part of my daily routine. They also have great hair care selections and I've been turned on to my GHD Eclipse straightener to dry shampoo. I love that they carry Bumble and Bumble which is the only shampoo and conditioner I use. I am a Rouge Member which allows me to get exclusive deals and attend exclusive events. They always make me feel like a VIP which is so fabulous when you spend a lot of money at a business. I have probably gone to almost every Sephora in the Bay area and this one remains my favorite. read more

I don't know, I guess the workers here can be pretty helpful if they feel like it. Most of the time I find myself asking them for help VS them asking me. About two weeks ago I had one of the best experiences and it wasn't even with a Sephora employee, she actually was there with Tarte. I don't remember her name but she was super helpful and listened to me. It was just a different experience than usual. Funny because originally she was helping me find a concealer that wasn't Tarte but since I couldn't get my shade in the one I needed she showed me the new Tarte concealer. I've always used the Tarte stick concealer so trying a new liquid concealer it ended up working out perfect!! Anyway overall I've never really had any horrible experiences at this location so I will continue to come! read more

As was mentioned by another reviewer, I think the best way to visit this Sephora is by doing some research online and narrowing down the products you are looking for...I did this while I was on a primer hunt, and was really pleased. I think if I had went in without a general idea of what I wanted I would have been there all day. (Of course, it can be fun just to browse too...in which case, please ignore this review!) The sales people were great at finding what I needed, and helping me compare it to some other products that were similar. LOVE this place. There is so much to look at and so much to try. Don't be afraid to ask for advice and samples... it is their job to know all about the pros and cons of each product so give them a chance to tell you. Also give them your two cents because it is helpful for me when they are able to talk about real customers experience. The experience in the store is like being in an amusement park, you really have to give each ride a spin before you can really tell if it is fun for you, looks & packaging can be beyond deceiving. It is a smaller than average Sephora store so selection is limited and some of the staff lack the knowledge of their complete available inventory. My first experience with Sephora was in Paris and I have yet to see a location that matched their Champs-Élysées store, here's hoping. Like any girl who likes to primp occasionally... I enjoy Sephora. If you don't know their deal is, whatever you like take a sample! My first visit everyone was so helpful and continuously asked if they could help with anything. One of the clerks sold me a bronzer from Cargo which I love and she let me in on their return policy, she described it as "we are like Nordstrom's if you don't like it just bring it back no questions asked." So that got any crafty girl thinking... hmmm i have so much makeup from sephora that I fell out of love with. Listening to the angel on my shoulder and not the devil, I only returned 2 items that truly where not as expected. The same clerk helped me on this visit but she was not as friendly or warm as she was last time, I am writing it off as a bad day.. But it all worked out, they took back the products no questions asked and I found exactly what I was looking for. Also my boyfriend needs a new cologne, another clerk gave me like 7 really nice samples. Letting him decide will be so much easier than me buying the wrong scent! read more

Been to this store several times and most of those times I didn't end up buying anything. I like to go in and sniff at colognes to figure out what my next one is going to be, when one of my many bottles is empty. Someone usually greets you as soon as you step inside which is nice, however it doesn't seem genuine, but rather rehearsed and forced. I wanted to give a HUGE shoutout to Norma for doing such an awesome job on my makeup yesterday. So today is my big debut at work as Rachel, and I was so doubtful and apprehensive about expressing myself at work but after I talked to HR it was a huge confidence booster. I wanted to look pretty and presentable letting my self free. When I looked in the mirror after she did my makeup I felt so liberated and free you have no idea. I wanted to cry but she just did my eyes :-) very knowledgable and not too pushy and I use to be in sales at best buy so I know how it is. I've only been in a few times but the last time was worth noting. I went in with a girlfriend to browse. Her teenage son has severe acne so he started on Proactive a couple of months ago. He's not getting better, rather worse. So I decided when we were in Sephora that we should brainstorm with an attendant about options. She was so great, very informative. She knew right off all the Proactive ingredients compared to other products. My friend realized her son was allergic to the leading Proactive ingredient and that's probably why he's so red and irritated now. Fortunately there were other product options they could try. Thanks to a neutral parties expertise...at Sephora! Also, I loved their "Best of" wall. It was so easy to see all the product options for my skin type. So convenient.
