CONTEXT:
Just to give some reference about my "make-up background," here are the products I buy: Laura Mercier Face Compact ($40), Smashbox Photo Finish ($38), She Uemura Basic Mascara ($27), Laura Mercier Foundation ($28), Philosophy Grace Body Soap (?), and all the make-up cleaner, brushes, and brush cleaners. So, you have a good idea of the way I value quality in make-up.
REVIEW:
I have to admit that I don't look like a typical Sephora make-up customer. I don't wear lots of make-up and usually go wearing a ratty t-shirt and jeans. Hey, I have a corporate job and work 12-14 hours in a suit so I try to look grungy after I get out. So, I understand if I don't fit the Profile to get great service.
However, I look at going to Sephora as a task like grocery food shopping. I don't like doing it, but I have to. Why? Because every time I go, the representatives look at me funny and make me feel guilty about asking for a free sample. If I try to ask them a question about something, they quickly get it over with and walk over to the lady who definately wears a lot of make-up.
BUT, KIMBER changed it all! I have to say that I had the most PLEASANT and FUN experience ever at Sephora (any Sephora for that matter). She asks for my name and shakes my hand. She put my basket aside for me when I needed to take a restroom break. She made me feel comfortable enough to finally say that I am looking for a wrinkle cream (I'm only 26!!!). At first, she takes me over to Lip Fusion ($130) and when she noticed that I look less than impressed, she doesn't assume it's because I want some cheap-o imitation. She asks, "What am I looking for?" I can't remember the last time someone even CARED enough to ask. And, I finally tell her that I want something cosmetic AND long term prevention. So, I'm working on the Perricone Face Lifter for my neck ($90) and I love it.
Because Kimber spent so much time with me, I'm putting more serious thought in folowing the instructions on the sample and following through. Everytime I look at it, I remember how she made me feel comfortable and beautiful. She even shared her own personal stories. I'm going to go in and buy the Perricone Face Lifter when I run out of samples. Yes, I said SAMPLES with an "s." I'm constantly surprised when I have another associate help me and they open the drawer with a million samples and hand me 1 dinky one, as if it's costing them a lot of money or effort to give me one!!!
What really surprised me was the fact that Kimber even walked me to the cash register (no pressure, I told her I was ready) and asked the associate to take care of me. She even stayed a bit to talk. But, the cash register associate seemed to "roll her eyes." Like, being a great person with customer services skills was "lame" or "uncool."
Well, I think not. I think that's why Sephora can stand to THRIVE even when MAC stores with their punky and indifferent attitudes about customers are popping up everywhere.
Sephora, I hope you can find a way to recognize and reward this type of customer service. I can't wait to go back and ask Kimber for more recommendations that I will actually feel HAPPY about everytime I use it (even if I end up not liking it, the memory of the experience will be good enough).
Oh, and it's not like Kimber didn't have other stuff to do. She also answered 3 phone calls and 1 other in-person question while she talked to me. And, she did it in a way that didn't make me or the other person feel like she was rushing. read more
