They have loads of people to help you on the sales floor. But, at the cashier it is always a long wait. I even mentioned it to the manager the last time I was there, because I was waiting over 15 minutes in the line to pay. Her response was that she wished she had more people. But, it doesn't take rocket science to take a few people off the sales floor and put them behind on a cash register. That being said, I had a lovely cashier wait on me. She has beautiful blue hair and she was so nice. I think her name was Jess! The store is jam packed with products and I am sure if you know what you want, you could find it there. The manager with the heavy makeup and the jet black hair that comes mid back (or longer) is so rude. Stands in the front and when you ask for help she redirects you elsewhere. I asked a general question about store hours and she redirected me again, I then asked her to point me in the direction of the female fragrances and she redirected me again and each time she was ruder than the next. She needs a new position because standing in front as the "greeter" is not the best place for her and her bad attitude. read more

I was very unhappy with my last visit to this Sephora location (about two months ago). I interacted with three associates--I asked for help from one associate, who was not friendly but able to direct me to another associate who was much more helpful. Unfortunately the last person I interacted with (at the cash register) was very unkind and sloppily wrapped up my purchases in tissue instead of offering me a bag (I called back later to ask about it and the manager impatiently said the store had run out of bags). The cashier also did not inform me I had reward points I could use (which I also verified with the manager). In my past visits to Sephora (albeit at different locations) I've always been informed of my reward balance and received a small sample item at the register, not to mention much friendlier service. All the products are expensive but very high quality. I bought a Kat Von D felt tip eyeliner pen for $20 that lasted me for 2 or 3 years before it dried out. The eyeliner had a pointy tip, so it was easier for me to create a winged look even as an amateur makeup artist. Also, it was waterproof, so I could wear it all day (even in the shower!) without it smudging at all or fading. If you want smudge-free, long-lasting eyeliner, buy Kat Von D. It's worth it! I came to this location just to browse. I don't often buy products from here because of the prices. As I was browsing, an employee asked if I needed any assistance. She was friendly and helpful. The staff there are talented with their makeup skills, so you can tell they know what they're doing. read more

Worst customer service ever, while I was looking for my tinted moisturizer , no one was available to help. The only time help arrived was when I found the shade only to be embarrassed in the store for finding my shade in the drawer since it was not on display . She was very condescending saying ask for help, loudly even though no one was available .no one ever greets you in this store , they are busy talking to each other. Unlike the Pike & Rose location.Not only did she not help , she was very abrupt. And had to repeat it several times, even though I am not hard of hearing. This happened yesterday July 19. I should have spoken to the manager or her superior this is unacceptable for a loyal paying customer. Next time I will make sure I get her name. Spend your money somewhere else. Overall I'm a huge fan of sephora.. Just not of this particular store. They always have such a wide selection of things I never knew I needed but I was severely disappointed the last time I stopped in this location.. First off the store feels very small and cramped. I wondered around aimlessly for 20 minutes and no one offered to help me then when I attempted to test products myself I couldn't find any brushes, sponges or tissues... Pretty hard to buy makeup if I don't know what it looks like on.. When I got to the register the manager checked me out and seemed bothered that no one helped me but she was one of the people who previously walked past me in the store with no acknowledgement.. I will take my business to the friendship heights location.. They seem to value their customers there! read more

Had a very terrible experience with getting my shade matched at Sephora. I asked for an employee to help me find my foundation shade for Fenty Beauty foundations and concealers. She matched me to a 120 and it seemed to look pretty nice in the store... I was naive and trusted her, without doing more research into the Fenty brand, specifically the shade range. I knew something was off once I got home. Although my face looked ridiculously pale I kept telling myself that I was probably overthinking things. Nope... even my friends mentioned to me (unprovoked) that I looked pale and sick. When I did a color match to Colourpop's Liquid Foundation (my old foundation) through their match finder, it said that a Fenty Beauty 120 shade matches the Colourpop shade 30. I had been using Colourpop shade 70 (the shade numbers go up by fives)... I did a lot of research and checked the Youtube videos of many many Youtubers. I realized that Youtubers such as Jeffree Star, NikkiTutorials, and Porcelain were using shades from 110-130 (I think they all used 110 but I may be wrong). These makeup youtubers are very very fair skinned. I have absolutely no idea how or why this employee thought that I was nearly that fair skinned. I later went to two other Sephora stores and was matched to a 190 and a 220, respectively. Oh my gosh. Even though they still did not agree on a foundation match, 120 is not even remotely close to 190-220. Thankfully Sephora has a very forgiving return policy, so I was able to return the 120 shades via mail. Now, I didn't know any better. If you are not super knowledgeable on makeup, DO YOUR RESEARCH and do not blindly believe the Sephora employees. read more

Make-up playground - great place to explore smaller labels for cosmetics but they also carry the big names like Dior and Clinique - smart on their part to be seen and competed together, the true democratic choice. My favorite names include NARS and Make Up Professionals for the intense pigmented eye make-ups. The mascara corner carried some of the best mascaras you could find in the market - the good thing was you could test them all out if you wanted. The perfumes they carried were also great you could test out as many as you desired. The skin care lines were also great. I was looking for a moisturizer to replace the discontinued Hydra Zen and the lady from Philosophy was so nice she gave me a few to try, that sealed my decision for one that suited me. I also received coupons ($15) and freebies when I purchased at Sephora. I like shopping at Sephora, though it can get expensive. read more

Although this store is closer to me, and I used to shop here frequently, I now go out of my way to shop at the Chevy Chase location instead. There has been a lot of staff turnover in the last few years, and most of the current employees' attitudes range from general indifference to thinly-veiled disdain to bristling superiority. Overall, their communication skills leave a lot to be desired, and thus it just feels better to avoid them altogether. This is in sharp contrast to the CC location, where staff are much more relaxed and pleasant, and the atmosphere isn't so off-putting. read more

I hate getting makeup tips from someone whose makeup is absolutely horrendous, but sometimes you have no choice. I found myself in that position this weekend. After taking a couple of selfies to show off my new 'do, I realized that the dark circles under my eyes were more pronounced than I previously thought. Yikes... I came to Sephora to find a good undereye concealer because the one that I've been using has obviously failed me. I went in and immediately looked for the nearest African-American sales associate (since we have similar skin, theoretically they can recommend products that work for our unique skin type) with fabulous makeup. Unfortunately I was only able to find one of the two, as the two young ladies I found both had a layer of makeup so thick you probably had to remove it with a sandblaster. Moreover, their makeup was heavy, cakey, and messy. The key to good makeup is blending. Unfortunately, I could clearly see where each product they used began and ended. This did not make me optimistic about getting good advice to solve my problem. The ladies put their heads together to try and help me find the product that I was looking for: a full coverage, undereye concealer that looks as natural as bare skin. The multiple products they tried on me were highly visible against my skin (despite their telling me that it looks good) and after trying several concealers, I was still unsatisfied. They told me that they were running out of options and that I wasn't going to be able to find anything much better than what they were currently offering me. I recommended trying a color corrector under the concealer first, which did the trick.The undereye concealer blended much better and provided me a smoother, more natural look when accompanied by the color corrector. I ended up buying the color correcter on the spot, and the young ladies sent me home with some samples of the concealer I liked best. This is part of the problem of hiring young girls at stores like this. They don't have much experience doing good makeup, and often only know what the company has told them, or what they have seen on YouTube tutorials. Although I ultimately found what I needed, it is hard for me to give this place more than 3 stars because when I come into a place like this, I expect to receive expert service from experienced professionals who understand your needs and can recommend products accordingly, instead of telling you that you won't be able to achieve the results that you want because their product and technique knowledge is limited. I have no doubt that the two young ladies who helped me did their very best, and I'm grateful for the assistance they were able to provide. However, had I not had the knowledge of color corrector (which I was introduced at another Sephora store in Florida), I may not have found what I was looking for. Or worse, I might have been talked into buying a product that did not give me the results that I sought. read more

I have been using GOOD GENES for a while. The product has a slightly unpleasant smell that I got used to. BEWARE: the products at Sephora at Montgomery Mall ARE NOT the original products. The content of the little jars have been replaced with another fluid cream or moisturizer that has a pleasant, citrusy smell. The last time I wanted the buy it, I only found one original product. MANAGERS: please monitor what happens in the store. There is no way these are customer returns because all fake products have the same pleasant, citrusy smell meaning the replacement must have been done in the store. This is a VERY EXPENSIVE product and it is unfair to customers to pay about $120.00 for a cheap content. CUSTOMERS: read the Amazon customers' reviews about this product to learn about its very specific smell. DO NOT BUY IT AT THE SEPHORA AT MONTGOMERY MALL unless you smell it beforehand. I went in to exchange on of the KVD translucent peach powder for the Laura Mercier translucent powder. It was a easy process and definitely will be back. Mind you, I did go on a Wednesday around 6pm. I don't use a lot of makeup. Mostly because I'm lazy. And also because my mom tells me that I look like a cheap hooker whenever I do more then put on lipstick. So I save my makeup for when the cheap hooker look is socially acceptable (ie hot dates with the husband...or for cosplay. Heh. I'm hilarious). My neice is a makeup artist, and she recommended that I get this one specific foundation for my face...to make it look less big. And freckly. And oily. And...oh you get it. It was supposed to be the most magical foundation on earth...and I could get it at Sephora! Great! Armed with the little slip of paper that told me what to get - I march into Sephora, and asked the sales people there where I could find this magical foundation that will make me look 15 years and 3000000000 drinks younger. They looked at me like I was speaking in Chinese. Taking a deep breath, I try again, and this time, one of the salesladies relucantly walks me over to the next aisle over and points at it. I still don't see it, so I ask again. Finally, with a big dramatic eye roll and sigh, she picks up a tiny little tube that I had over looked. It looked...kinda like what my neice recommended...but it didn't look *quite* like the tube that she showed me. So I'm trying to describe the tube to the saleslady (who really just wants to get back to gossiping with her friends) and showed her the note that my neice wrote for me...all the while she's nodding and telling me that the packaging changed and that this was it. Knowning that this happens often, I went with it...and bought the $28 tube (that is smaller then a tube of travel toothpaste...I shit you not). Only to find out...yup...it was the WRONG ONE. Employees are always rude and/or unhelpful at this location. I went in today to get a sample of the Toofaced lip balm and the lady gave me the tiniest amount of product (basically none). I hate when stores are stingy with samples. How am I supposed to consider buying this if I can barely try it bc there is barely enough product for one use? The store also seems to be much dirtier than others. I walked into Sephora looking for 1 thing - Korres mascara. The first woman I spoke to sent me to the back of the store. That's where they keep Korres eye treatments - no mascara. The second woman sent me all the way to the front of the store. That's where they keep mascara - but not the Korres brand. FINALLY a third woman helped me find the mascara I wanted. But fighting my way through a highly disorganized and crowded store just to get a tube of mascara that I could have bought on the internet? Not worth it. Especially when I politely and gently informed one of the women who had incorrectly send me on MascaraQuest 2010 that she was wrong about where they kept the product - and she looked at me like maybe I had horns for ears. I have mixed feelings about this location. The First Lady who helped me was super nice and helpful, she helped me smell several perfumes and helped me find a new one. I wanted more than one to add to my collection so I stuck around waiting for her to come back around to me. After a while I noticed she was at the register and another lady came to help me, which felt more like she was doing me a favor by spraying the perfume for me. She helped me and then she disappeared, I waited around 20 minutes for someone to come and help me and since no one came I decided to open the bottom drawer and grab the perfume myself since I seen a woman do it a couple minutes before. This employee comes to me as soon as I open it and said " you can't open those you have to ask for help" and then she points at the sign as says "you have to call us for samples". I felt like she thought I was trying to steal and that's why she came over to me so fast. Where was she when I was standing there for 20 minutes waiting for someone? The way she said that to me made me feel bad and I just wanted to leave at that point. This Sephora is so bad! Starting with the store itself, which is dirty and disorganized, and has tiny aisles so it's impossible for more than one person to look at a product comfortably. I went in recently to exchange some items. The registers were unmanned so I stood there to wait for someone to show up. Within 60 seconds, someone did but it was to ring up the customer she'd been helping. No problem, I get that but I expected to be next. Meanwhile, a line formed. A second employee came up and asked if I needed help. When I said I had some returns, she told me I needed to go to the back of the line. I replied there wasn't a line when I arrived and she just shrugged and said sorry. I would've let her have it but as a new mom, I don't need to be acting ratchet! I sucked it up and got in line but simply returned everything instead of getting the new items I wanted to try. I'll be sticking to shopping online at Sephora, plus you get samples in addition to the VIB perks! Shipping is pretty quick anyways! read more

During my makeup application with Dalba, she truly went above the level of customer service I have ever received at a Sephora and it could not be more appreciated. She listened to why I was there, the reason for learning a new makeup routine and she actually listened to my answers to her questions. When she asked about my skin-type and whether I wanted liquid or powder foundation, she provided me with products that were along what was best suited for my answers. She gave me the makeup look I needed (a quick look to put together before teaching every day). She took into consideration the time each step would take and the most effective, yet efficient, ways to apply my new, quick, but cohesive skincare/makeup routine. I also would like to add that she game me makeup tips specific for my brow shape and my deep-set (almost hooded) eye shape. I have alopecia and I lost my eyebrows and eyelashes when I was younger. My eyelashes grew back, but my eyebrows never fully grew back. I have been filling them in for 12 years and through many a make-over from makeup artists, not a one has provided me with brow shaping techniques for my brow bone shape and for my eyelid shape. I have never felt more listened to, or had a set of products more acutely curated for me and my specific needs before. Dalba was patient and explained the best ways for me to apply the makeup and skincare products. She answered my questions and explained each step and the why behind each product showed to me; she didn't bring over excess of items when she knew I wanted a quick and easy look to put together. One product that I really liked, but was a little too much at the time, she found a perfect alternative so I can still achieve my look and not completely break my budget. She also showed me a few Sephora brand products, which I hadn't considered in the past and those were my favorite purchases from that day! Because of her, I will be back during my VIB 15% sale this week to purchase a few more of the products she showed me during my makeup session. In the handful of times I have had my makeup done by artists at Sephora, none have provided the personalized routine and product assortment that Dalba provided for me. I will continue to come to the Sephora at Montgomery Mall because her exceptional customer service and specifically look for her when I need new recommendations. Truly an amazing person with a great personality and an exceptional knowledge base for the products in the store and customizing them to what her customer needs. I love going to Sephora because they carry a decent amount of healthy and organic products for your skin; enough to keep me happy (at least for now). I find new things every time I go there and they are constantly expanding their collection of Earth and human friendly products. I also like that the sales people leave me alone (for the most part) and let me shop. I love, love, love Lavanila's healthy fragrances and lotions. I wear Lavanila's Pure Vanilla everyday and feel good about it because it smells so good and it's free of petrochemicals, phthalates, silicone and parabens. That's why it's called the first healthy fragrance. I also discovered Juice Beauty here too. Juice Beauty is a skincare line made from organic fruits and vegetables that has options for all skin types including acne prone and anti-aging skin types. It's 97% organic and made without harsh chemicals and parabens as well. If you have the extra bucks (I mean lots of extra) or if you are HUGELY into taking care of your skin, you may want to look into Stella McCartney's CARE line. CARE is made of 100 percent organic active ingredients and zero percent petrochemicals, parabens or silicones. Even cooler is that the containers are made of 100% recycled materials and are all fully recyclable as well. If you're not quite into fully organic, raw, or fully recyclable products, Sephora also carries a lot of natural products like Carol's Daughter and L'Occitane. I like where this trend is going. For everyone else, they carry lots of great makeup and make-up accessories - products that cover every part of your body from your toes to the hair on your head. Just your standard Sephora, located in the heart of Bethesda on the top floor of Montgomery Mall. This location is usually well-stocked and carries most of the popular beauty products. Some of the more sought-after items are sometimes out of stock, but you can always order online and pick up in store for free, a huge plus! I like that they offer samples of products before purchase. However, as a few other reviewers noted, they can be stingy with the samples here. Maggie (I believe her name was) in particular seemed almost reluctant to allow my friend and I to try some perfumes from the new Dior collection. As a VIB Beauty Insider who spends hundreds of dollars at this and other Sephora locations per year, I expect better customer service and respect. Other than that, the store is well-lit, relatively clean, and polished. Easy to flag someone down if you need help finding a particular product or need help finding the right shade. TIP: They offer make-up lessons on certain days of the week! Never been but hoping to check these out with a friend sometime soon. read more

I'm so surprised to see many negative reviews. I have gone to this location during both busy times and "slower" times and no matter what I've received excellent service. I've been greeted when I enter the store, asked if I need help, and when I did need help, was given awesome recommendations for fragrances. Maggie in particular is wonderful and was incredibly knowledgeable about the products, even knowing each French translation of the Hermes "Jardin" line fragrances. She listened, was not pushy at all, and gave me samples since she knew I was having a hard time selecting. I shared with her the fragrance that I liked but was not sold at Sephora and she was able to look it up in her computer and find alternatives that I may like instead. Another day I visited fragrances and I'm sorry I didn't catch the salesperson's name because she too was AWESOME and gave me great recommendations as well as samples. I didn't have a Sephora Beauty Insider card (opting to use my mom's card if/when I went to the store) but after the lady at the register explained the perks, I got one. This was the worst sephora experience I have ever had. It was 8:25 pm when I entered, and instead of getting greeting I was told QUOTED "they are closing soon so hurry up." I just wanted to see the new FENTY lip sticks and I was approached by the same woman no less then 5 mins later saying they were closing do I need help because we need to clear the store. Another woman then approached me saying they were shutting down the registers and I needed to leave, I checked my phone and it was 8:39 PM. All together I was told by 5 different women in horrendous tones I can only describe as thinking of me as scum and speaking to me in that way.
