Was roaming around New Haven and happened to get to Seoul Restaurant right when they opened. Was a little caught off guard that they locked the door but the owner said it's because they've had some trouble in the past with people harassing them. Nevertheless, the lady who seemed to be running everything was very sweet and accommodating. Seafood Pajun: If there's anything to get, it's this. Great balance between seafood and the batter, all bundled together in a yummy crust. 10/10 Stone Pot Bibimbap: A little on the small side in terms of portion. Nothing much to note but I did wish I was given some sauce to accompany it. Pork Bulgogi: Succulent, fatty pieces of pork coated in a spicy marinade. The only problem was that there wasn't more. Soondobu Jigae: little on the fence with this one. The broth clearly was made with time and love. It just didn't have too much in it. Mandu: Another highlight. I hate to write a bad review on one of the few Korean restaurants in New Haven but this was some of the worst Korean food I ever had. I ordered the soon-tofu which had the appearance and consistency of chili with ground-up tofu, with a flavorless broth and minimal protein and veggeis. My friend who ordered the stone pot bibimbap did really like her dish so if you do visit, I will stay away from the soon tofu-- you can make a much better version yourself with the instant packs sold at Asian grocery stores. Ring the bell for entry. Yes, it's odd, but likely due to security issues. While I wanted a larger portion of stew and more banchan (Korean side dishes), I found the served portion to be adequate especially since I'm in a hotel. I'm glad I came here despite the "low" reviews. The 1 stars are unjustified. The stone pot bibim bop was one of the better dishes I've had outside of what I know from California. It was sweeter than what I had before - maybe their own style and twist to it but it was so good, and the rice perfectly crisped, that I finished it all in one sitting and food coma'd. We also ordered the dukbokki and the rice cakes were perfectly chew! A bit on the salty end but their own twist in flavor from what I have had was still there and to my liking. As a visiting student staying for a few months without a car, I'm giving 5 because this is one of the better Asian places I have been to in this area. The price is a bit high but I don't mind it given they're one of the few Asian restaurants within walking distance from where I'm at. read more

This place enjoys polarizing reviews. People seem to love it or hate it. I have been to this place a couple times, and every time this place was 20-30% full. The whole store seems empty and disorganized - they have a bunch of bases/ keyboards up top, and another corner of the store piled unused ice cream equipment and TV monitors, etc. - a very confusing set up. It would have been okay if the food was yummy and service was good. The food was decent. Their bibimbap was hot, steamy, pretty up-to-par. Their kalp beef soup was standard, but the soup has fewer substance (e.g., fewer pieces of beef) compared to other Korean restaurants nearby in the same price range. As other people had noted, the owner and his wife take their sweet time to serve you. We ordered a couple of dishes and waited 30 minutes to be served. The bigger problem is that, from other Google reviewers, this place seems to treat different clientele differently, and seem to be selective in terms of what types of clientele to provide good service and which types of "scoff" at. A couple times when I stepped into the restaurant, the door was locked from the inside. I and my friends had to shake the lock a few times before the owner coming to open the door for us. Three kinds of kimchi: steamed broccoli with hot sauce (this is not kimchi/side dish); bean sprouts; cabbage kimchi. Forget the types of kimchi you see on their website - not in amount and not in kind. And the peak: when I asked for an extra dish (which is the norm in Korean restaurants), I was refused and asked to pay an extra $5. Stay away from this restaurant... it's been along time since I have food this bad. The sign says Seoul but the food coming out of here is a disgrace to real authentic Korean cuisine. The dishes here are made to fool and appease those who've never tasted great Korean food and it's sad that they call any of this food Korean... You know it's bad when you walk in at 7 pm and they tell you they ran out of seafood... half of your dishes require seafood so that pretty much meant half the menu is now no longer served. What...? First off, the banchan (small dishes) here is just horrific...the kimchi is grey and dry, the bean sprouts look like they were plucked from the backyard, the broccoli was boiled with a squirt of chili paste...terrible. Strange thing was they ran out of seafood but you can still pay 15 for the seafood pancake and you guessed it ... no seafood inside . Besides the 2 pieces of tiny shrimp. The "seafood" soon dubu had no seafood inside and the tofu was gross, all mashed up and in tiny little pieces. The bulgogi was essentially nasty slices of beef in terryaki sauce (what an insult to real bulgogi). Overall the experience here was just extremely disgusting and off putting . Super slow service and really truly awful food. I strongly urge everyone in new haven to stay as far as you can from this terrible terrible place . Had a fabulous lunch today for my daughter's birthday. Had scallion pancakes and dduk bok kki for appetizers. Both were delicious. For main dishes, we had special kalbi, chicken bulgogi, kalbi tang, and dumpling rice cake soup. Everything was perfect. Great amount of spice, and loved all the side dishes too. Ate here once and will not be coming back! Pros: They have dine-in available and their own free small parking lot. Service was okay, the waiter was polite (but does not speak English very well at all). Cons: Food was very expensive and also tasted below average. The $17 seafood tofu soup tasted a little weird (almost sour?) and the tofu was very smashed up. The $16 "beef" bibimbap was essentially some veggies, rice, and a small dollop of smashed up beef paste. The four side dishes (aka banchan) that was brought out consisted of kimchi, broccoli, sweet beans, and pickled veggies. They were just a-okay, nothing great/just average. Overall, way too expensive and the quality and flavor of the food definitely did not justify the price. Then place is very spacious, but normally with two to three tables being "reserved." the place normally have one or two tables occupied at most. Oh I am thankful that New Haven has some proper Korean food because I'm pretty sure my system needs a shot of kimchi from time to time to keep on running. Seoul is not the best Korean food I've ever had, and it's pricy for what it is, but it's good, and it's comforting. I've never tried the sushi/Japanese stuff and don't intend to, but I imagine it's okay too. I've tried a whole bunch of stuff on the menu and it's all been yummy - galbi, bulgogi, chicken bulgogi, pork bulgogi, octopus stir-fry, kimchi stew, scallion pancakes, dolsot bibimbap...all good. Seoul is really good for coming with big groups so you can steal off your friends' plates in typical Korean/scrappy glutton style. We threw a surprise party here for a friend once and the staff was helpful, let us bring our own cake and hide it, and the restaurant easily accommodated around 20-30 of us. It's a fun space and you wouldn't necessarily think of it to throw a party in, but it totally worked! But back to the food...I really don't have anything else to say about it, except I guess that I would like some now. read more

Being the only Korean place I've seen in New Haven, it's not bad, but being the only one, I guess they don't have other standards to compete with. I went there with my husband, and there was barely any English being spoken. I'm traditional enough that I bowed to the hostess, and they were pretty pleased with that. We had dol sot bibimbap, bul go gi, and jap jae. It was pretty good, and I really love banchan. The bul go gi was a little stringy, but the flavor was there. It's not a million percent authentic - you could get better food in K-town. But it is good for what it is, and they have lots of traditional dishes. So, after talking with some of you guys and after having a hankering for Korean food, I decided to revisit Seoul after 6 years to give it a try and see how the place was. I was actually really shocked. The food was really good and the service was great (which was unusual from what I remember). The food only took 15 minutes to come out and it tasted really good. I got bibim bap and duk bul ki both of which tasted really good. The hostess even came over and helped me with my bibim bap to make sure the rice got cooked evenly and was crunchy. I will say that the food was pricy, which was unfortunate and that since this was my first time back in awhile, it's possible that the service is variable. But, all in all, it wasn't the absolute nightmare lack of service void of destruction where your hopes and dreams go to willow away and die like I remember. I actually really enjoyed myself and will likely go back again to confirm that the experience was actually good and not the result of a hallucinogenic dart that I may or may not have been hit by on the way into the restaurant. I've been searching all over Connecticut for Korean food and have found there is a huge lack of it. I ate Korean food quite often while living in Louisville, KY and Charlotte, NC. It was decent in Charlotte, but Louisville is a secret foodie-gem and it had some excellent restaurants. I've also eaten Korean in San Francisco, and there is nothing like food in San Francisco. Rating this compared to my across the board Korean food experience, it filled the void, but isn't excellent Korean. The owners were very nice. The dolsot bibimbap had an option of coming with tofu, so I was happy about that. However, I couldn't eat the banchan. My favorite part of the meal is the banchan and it just wasn't up to par. The salad bar at my cafe at work recently had kimchee that was better than this. I would go again to fix my Korean cravings, but I wish we had more options. read more

I ordered the Stone Pot Bibimbap and when it arrived, the proprietress asked if I had ever had it before. While a few local places offer korean items on their menus or korean bbq like the Chengdu Food Trail, they do not offer a full authentic korean menu and do not put as much care into their business quite yet. For those of you traveling by car there is plenty of on street parking, and they are only blocks away from Yale hospital and other hotspots downtown COST: The restaurant itself is run by a korean couple and as stated above it is the only place to go to for authentic korean food and bbq. The price is also well within the range of many other korean restaurants found in And around Fort Lee NJ. The costs everywhere has gone up. If you want to eat at a fast pace chain, high volume dirty restaurant that is rushing you to finish your meals in order to open up a table, sure you can find a cheaper place a few hours away. SERVICE: The Service here seems to be a topic to debate. And I'd like to set things straight. At any given time of the day there is usually only one server and no host to greet you. The servers are also the owners. Although there is no sign for you to seat yourself, they will often point in the general direction that they would like you to sit, while continuing serving those currently seated. Now if you have the ability to get off your high horse and enjoy a mom and pop restaurant that individualizes their service to its customers, then you will find their service to fit your needs. I find the owners to be charming, and they are clearly hard workers. On numerous occasions while seated near the bar or kitchen I've overheard teaching and training with their kitchen staff, done in a respectful manner. Once again, the owners are hands on. Something that is rare and to be cherished. They follow up to the work that is being done and are efficient doing so. They are also hands on and observant with the customers needs. I ordered the hot stone pot bibim-bap for the first time the other day, and when one of the owners saw me breaking apart the egg with my chopsticks he ran over and politely yet quickly showed me how to use the long spoon to mix it all together while scraping the pot. This is something he repeated for two other tables that also ordered the dish. Another time I requested to pack my left overs and the owner (wife) came up to me and told me that she left out one of the side items as it goes bad quickly, but she added more rice. Again going above what I'd expect and as owners nonetheless. It's left overs, she could have simply plopped it into a box and let me on my way. The owners are kind, will keep your drinks filled and will offer suggestions if you allow them to or if you have specific dietary concerns. Things to try: * Scallion pancake, fried light appetizer large enough for 4 people cut into 8slices. Try it with the sauce they give you, it really does amp up the flavor! $11.94 * Stone Pot Bibim-Bap, comes with miso soup. This is a great optioned you are new to korean food or simply love Bibim-Bap. Assorted veggies, over easy fried egg and either beef or tofu. $15.95 * Soon Do Bu Jigae (soup), my favorite soup so I am bias. It will come out in a hot stone pot! The beef and seafood are both delicious options! Comes with a bowl of rice $13.95 * Cod Fish Geegae. A soup similar to the Soon Do Bu Jigae but with a fish broth for the base, with cod fish and assorted vegetables and tofu. The owners are actually korean so that's a nod for authenticity. We had a gochu pajeon (korean scallion pancake with peppers), soondubu jjigae (soft tofu stew), and kalbi (beef shortrib). The pepper pajeon wasn't something you see very often and it was executed well and fresh. Definitely gotta eat it while it's hot. The soondubu tasted like it was pretty fresh but the broth seriously tasted of instant dashi, aka asian stock/bouillon, not like it was made from kelp and anchovy stock. I've gotten tons of recommendations from clients to try Seoul. I haven't had Korean food before, but have wanted to try it for a while, so I finally made the time to check it out. I went for an early lunch, and my friend and I were the only customers in the place. The waiter was very friendly, brought out water immediately after seating us, and was attentive throughout. My friend ordered bulgogi, and I ordered a hot stone bibimbap. The food came with sides of kimchi, daikon radish, broccoli, bean sprouts, and salad. Mine came with a miso soup. My dish came in a stone bowl that only stopped sizzling a few minutes before we left. It was fantastic. I demolished my bowl, only leaving a crispy bit of rice at the bottom. The miso soup was super savory, probably some of the best I've ever eaten. The kimchi was awesome, so was the radish. Both made me want to ask if I could buy jars to take home. The salad, broccoli, and bean sprouts were also very tasty, and between the two of us, we ate nearly everything. I tried a couple pieces of bulgogi, and it was perfectly cooked, tender, and tasty! Upon craving Korean food, we decided to give this place a try. We love the spicy pork bulgogi and the bibimbap! The Korean owner was lovely! She showed us the correct way to eat the bibimbap and even mixed it all up for us in the stone bowl, which was a very sweet motherly gesture. I had passed this place a few time and finally ventured in about 2 weeks ago. I was the only patron and reveled in all the attention. I started with two apps (as I was hungry and my eyes were literally bigger than my stomach). The shumai and the dumplings to start. For the main course I had the beef and scallion soup. Everything was served with a warm smile and the place may be a bit pricey I totally enjoyed my meal in a warm space with real table clothes. There is a band stand so it makes me wonder when they have live music. I'd totally go there for that and some dim sum any night of the week. I think it makes for a great date spot.
