Yesterday was my first visit after seeing the great reviews. I had a funeral to attend in the afternoon so I called right when they opened if they could see me in 10 minutes and they accommodated. When I got there, Honey took me in immediately. She was friendly and professional. Listened to what I wanted done and proceeded to wash and cut my hair. I liked the results . I asked if she had time to curl my hair, but unfortunately her next appointment was already there and waiting. She asked another stylist, Hylynly (blonde Asian girl with black roots) if she could curl my hair. She started curling my hair and was friendly but when she was almost done, she burned my cheek with the iron. SHE BURNED MY FACE!! I instinctively retreated my face from the hot iron, covered my cheek, and yelled out a cuss word. She asked me something and I told her she burned my face. As she denied doing so, I then asked if she had any ice. She left and came back with a refrigerated used water bottle. That's all you have? Fine I'll take it and placed it on my cheek. She kept telling me I'll be fine. I don't remember even hearing an apology. So on top of having to attend my brother's funeral, I had to attend it and speak to my large family with a burn on my cheek. The only reason I gave stars at all was for Honey and the cut she gave. And now, atop of a superbly coiffed doo--courtesy of Lori. Lori gives a good shampoo to the head...and her flat ironing skills are out of this world. I took my daughter here today to get a Brazilian Blowout. I had called other salons for pricing, and Sense Salon was the most reasonable. I wasn't sure what to expect, this was the first time she had any treatment done to her hair. They were super busy when we got in, so they took us 20 minutes after our scheduled appointment. Understandable, it was a Saturday. Carisa took my daughter, who is 13 and very shy, and made her feel very comfortable. My daughter has a lot of very curly hair, but she took her time and was very professional. The result was AMAZING! Her hair came out straight, smooth and totally healthy looking! This was my first time going to this salon, and after much research, decided to do my first Japanese hair straightening treatment with them. I was able to make an appointment the day before (awesome), and asked me several quick questions about my hair and gave me a price estimate. I have dense African American hair and was a little nervous, due to I usually just handle my own hair. I went in and was nicely greeted and immediately was given an open seat. Polly (the owner) took a look at my hair and talked about the processes in which will be taken to achieve the straight look for my hair texture. Polly and another stylist worked on my hair diligently and definitely made the process faster. I was shocked to see how straight my hair was getting mid way of the treatment, and was satisfied with the results. My hair is so manageable and Polly is the sweetest and is an expert at Japanese Hair Straightening! I gave 4 stars due to they didn't really fully "style" my hair at the end, only blow dried which looked good but thought they would've straightened it also. She showed me some products that I can use for my newly treated hair and I feel like a new person. I will definitely be coming back!!! read more

I stopped visiting salons for my hair when I was 13. I sport specific asian-inspired hairstyles for a guy that other places can never create the way I like. From the day I first walked into Sense Salon in late 2011 until now I have always felt extremely welcome and ready to have my hair done the way I want it. The one very special lady that I get to do my hair each time is Rhea. She is wonderfully welcoming and very personable, and we always have great conversations. She's very fast and efficient. I've never been dissatisfied leaving Sense Salon and even though I live in Sacramento about an hour away, its always worth the drive! Prices are very decent, the place is clean, and has a lot of magazines available if you're looking for something new! All-around great Salon! I decided to check out Sense Salon based on its Yelp reviews, and I'm really glad that I did. They were able to fit me in for a same day appointment. Hylynly cut my hair earlier this week, and did an outstanding job. I have super-short hair, and she was really precise in her cut, and did the whole thing without razoring scissors (I hate razoring scissors). My hair dresser was here years ago so I decided to give them a try again. The new location is a bit sketchy and as I walked in for a quote they were not real welcoming. When they quoted me they said 120 but then before I walked out the door they jacked up the price to 160. Everyone in this salon is one race and they are not too welcoming if you are not part of that race. They acted like they were doing me a favor by helping me. Eye brow threading review! I have been getting my eyebrows threaded everywhere in hopes for the perfect person. My old go to spot was Green Valley Salon &Spa but after a while, they stopped listening to what I wanted. HEENA is incredible. She has been shaping/ "cleaning up" my eyebrows for probably about a year now. She is amazing! I don't trust my eyebrows to anyone else!!! Even when there's a long line of ladies waiting for her, she does each person's eyebrows [or lips or chin or whatever] meticulously. I'm only giving it 4 stars because of the location, I know they cant help it... Anywho, I came in this evening around 520 just as a walk in although i called ahead to see if they were busy or not. My cut was done in about 35-40 minutes. Lori cut my hair tonight, and i really, really like it :D My friend comes to this salon a lot and she lives in fairfield, so when she told me to try it instead of my usual, Devyns, I did a quick check on yelp and sure enough the reviews were rave! Place is clean, and homey like the review under says. Seems fairly new, according to Lori they just had their 4 year mark. so Its not run down or anything. On to the stylist, Lori. I am very pleased with her skills. She was friendly enough as well during my session. She wasnt overly talkative which is great! she did show interest in the conversation, so that made me feel a little more comfortable coming in to a new place. She did a quick assessment, and i told her that I wanted my hair to appear fuller since it already is super thin. She explained to me what kind of cut will achieve what I wanted and that was that. Seems like she knew exactly what I had in mind. YAY And as she said to me, She is a safe cutter. Meaning she leaves about and inch to half and inch from the length you initially want, just to be safe. I like that. because c'mon guys, sometimes stylists cut WAAAY TOO MUCH OFF. After reading the reviews I went to Sense Salon. It's kind of a homey atmosphere, with lots of regulars who seems to know the owner well. I have long hair and needed it trimmed and shaped, but have found not everybody can really do that in a sexy, effective way. I sat down with Polly, the owner, who is a very no-nonsense woman and who clearly is very skilled. She flips in those hair clips like they are a part of her. A real pro. It was impressive. As was the end result. I am VERY happy with my cut. It's not the experience I've had at other super clean upscale salons but it was a great one. Hey, this is Vallejo, so roll with everything that's great about our town, the down to earth, multi-ethnic, casual fabulous-ness of it all and you'll get a GREAT haircut. Because I read such great things about Lori, I decided to make an appointment with her. I called on Tuesday for a Friday appointment, which was available. However, when I got to the salon Friday, I was told she had an emergency and that they were unable to reach me. Although, as I pointed out, they did take my phone number when I made the appointment. So they gave me the option of rescheduling or seeing someone else. I decided to let someone else do my hair for this appointment. The lady never introduced herself, so I can't tell you her name. I asked for a rinse slightly darker than my natural color, and she didn't do that, it was my natural color she matched, so the highlights I was trying to hide weren't hidden. I wasn't thrilled with the cut either, although it wasn't bad I just felt like it was cut in a hurry and not shaped as well as it could have been. Like other posts say, the cost of the cut was more than reasonable. I just wished I had asked what the rinse was going to cost, I wasn't happy with what I ended up paying. I do appreciate them seeing me even though Lori wasn't there, but my overall experience wasn't what I was hoping for. I'm due for another cut in a couple weeks, and haven't decided if I'll go back or not. read more

I came into Sense Salon with a terrible haircut that I received over a year ago from another salon. My hair was past my hips but had terrible chunky uneven layers. Jackie assured me that she would do her best to mend my disastrous do. Fortunately for me, she did way more than damage control.. She was able to even out & blend the layers without completely severing my long hair. Albeit 5 inches, I am very satisfied with the end result.. She made sure that I was comfortable with the cut before making any major snips & went easy on the shears after I told her that I wasn't a big fan of them. The best hair cut I have ever had, for only $23! I have spent the last 7 years paying $150 - $200 in Marin for highlights and hair cuts, after tip. I did some research and found that no, not all drugstore box kits are bad, and one should not have to go broke after a good hair cut. So, I bought two boxes of Revlon Colorsilk, which turned out awesome, and was now in dire need of a good trim. After reading the reviews, I decided to make an appointment with Lori. I was able to get a same day appointment with and the hair trim only took 30 minutes! She was polite, professional, and thorough. My hair has never been so even! As mentioned by other Yelpers, she prefers your hair to be dry, then flat irons it and then trims. I am a true believer in this technique after being less than happy with wet trims after my hair dries. Sense Salon is clean, modern, and offer other skin care and hair treatments. Heena conducted my eyebrow threading, and was personable and professional in her approach. I was able to walk in on a Saturday, and didn't have to wait to long for her services. She asked where I was from, and after we established I was visiting on business, she still have me her return card....where if I have a certain number of services, I can get 1 free. I travel to the area every 3 months or so, and will be back to see her if I need to. It's a short ride from Napa, where everything costs more...and I wasn't able to find a threading salon anyway. read more

Beware of unfair reviews that have been posted recently in June! I personally do take reviews quite seriously. I always check reviews prior going to any place. However, this is my first time writing one. When I went to the Sense Salon this week, I overheard that the salon have received really bad review recently. I then learned that one of the stylists, Kenny, was let go in May. Then, bad reviews all the sudden surfaced! What a coincidence... I think it is an easy puzzle to put together. Let me tell you the honest truth. I have been a loyal customer to the owner of Sense Salon even when she worked as just a hairstylist in El Cerrito. I live in Richmond. Do you think I am that crazy to need to drive 1/2 hour and pay $5 toll to do my haircut or styling? I do not think anyone in the entire Bay area has the skills and the heart to take care of her customers like Polly. In addition, she charges very reasonable price for the service! I went there to get my hair cut a while back and Kenny; one cool ass young stylist cut my hair and told me the honest truth whether i should cut it short or leave it long. Im glad i left my hair long and the way he layed my hair made it look even longer. So far, im happy and would probably go back.
