Well I am writing this review first as a Puerto Rican who left the island in 1979 and second as a Puerto Rican who knows how Puerto Rican food taste and looks like. I can say that I do agree with some of the reviews on here that are higher than my 2 star rating, but I am also reviewing according to what I ate and experienced today Sunday July 9th 2017. I have heard of Senor Bid Ed before and though I have been wanting to give it a try, and God knows I worked so close by on Orangethorpe never had the time to stop by Today I decided to take my sister and treat her to some Puerto Rican food, so we made our way to La Palma. When got there I was excited to see all the pretty pictures on the outside window of typical Puerto Rican dishes, along with my beautiful flag from Puerto Rico. Upon making my way inside, first thing that caught my eye is how plain the dining room was, aside from a Map of Puerto Rico framed on the end wall there was nothing else to look at other than a couple mirror palm trees and an apron with a Puerto Rican flag on the other side, two old fashioned coin bubble gum machines and one of those Crane machines where you try and grab (most of the time a bear or some plush animal) unsuccessfully. I mean if this place is owned by a Puerto Rican, this was your chance to go crazy with pictures of the island, momentos from your trips there and some foliage, plants, green anything to remind these diners that this place has a connection to an Island in the Caribbean. Now to the food (help me God!), so, I ordered the Carne quisada con papas, arroz blanco and I asked if the had "Habichuelas guisadas Marca Diablo", any Puerto Rican knows these are the big red kidney beans, yet the waitress looked at me clueless, I mean the picture of the beans was on the menu, I Pointed it out to her, my friend had a plate with withe rice, habichuelas pintas guisadas, a relleno de papa, un pastelillo y una alcapurria, same for my sister, I had a Agua de Piña (pineapple water), the waitress took off, came back in a few minutes and said they did not have my beans, that all beans where Pinto, I said ok. Waited a bit. By the way like in another review here, the place was completely deserted, mind you about a couple more diners came in as we were there. Here comes the food (yikes), she placed in front of me a plate that had cubes of beef, not chunks in sauce, with some mushy white riece and a few pieces of maduritos on the side, the beans where served in a cup type bowl on the the side. First I know what Carne Guisada con Papas looks like (Mom use to make, RIP mom), this was sad to look at, there was two marble size pieces of potato in there, that was it, no olives, no sofrito, no cilantro, nothing, all that scent of the Puerto Rican food was non existent. I was very disappointed without even taking a bite, just by the looks of it, so I dig in, yup! Very bland, tasteless very sad, same for the pinto beans that felt like they opened a can, threw them in there and microwaved them, these beans were not Guisadas. I felt I left my sister down for bringing her to such a place, I am not even going into the other plates my sister and my friend were having, but she did mentioned her rice was under cooked and the tostones lacked Ajo and spices, the food and ambient here is the bulk of my review. Well to cut this long review a bit short they have a case with a few Puerto Rican novelties, such as hats, stickers, flags, etc. I asked one of the waitresses if they had a Puerto Rican flag sticker maybe in stock, she said no, but you can take that one that says Salsero on it and cut the Salsero part out, Said What???, I asked are you Puerto Rican? and she said Nope. So to conclude, is sad that there are so few Puerto Rican restaurants in southern California, so this was a missed opportunity to impress and bring in the people from the island who misses our dishes and our food, now don't get me wrong I am sure they have a following for some of their Fritangas, and I respect higher ratings to this place, but I am speaking from my own personal experience, I think I will watch more Aida from "Sweets and Beyond" on YouTube and start learning to cook the foods of my island and how to prepare them at home.
