I'd never sold anything before, but like most people who are even considering it (and thereby looking up reviews to see where to go), a few months ago as gold prices were rising, I started seeing those "cash for your old and broken jewelry" ads on the tv. It got me thinking about all the unworn stuff I had lying around. I'm not a jewelry girl, and it really didn't have sentimental value, so I set aside a few things I wouldn't miss and set about researching which were the most reputable buyers in town. Yes, that was a hassle, but Yelp definitely helped make it easier... and I'm here to save you even more time. There are a LOT of gold buyers here. I admit, I get a little nervous about those dingy looking shops in nondescript tiny strip malls, in nondescript parts of town. Black awnings screaming "WE BUY GOLD" types of slogans in bold yellow (always yellow!) type. And they all swear they'll pay the absolute best price, but of course, only one really does. My imagination gets away on me and I picture a sketchy guy with questionable eyebrows hunched over a glass case full of desperate people's wedding rings and it just depresses me. My hopes weren't high when I saw this shop was in a tiny strip mall - but fortunately, the lady inside was very professional, normal, and non-scary, and her eyebrows were fine. Best yet, Sell Us Gold really did offer the best price - by a couple hundred, in some cases - of anyone. The next closest offer was about $80 less. I'd have saved a lot of time and gas if I'd just gone straight here. You should go to them, confident that you won't do better elsewhere. Just an FYI - if you do want to shop around, this is what I've learned: if you're going to sell gold or silver, to anyone, you should definitely know in advance exactly how much you have of what. If you can categorize it by karat, so much the better: for example, 3 grams of 14K, 2.4 grams of 18K, 4.3 grams of .925 sterling silver, etc. Then look up the current ("spot") price of each type of gold or silver, so you have a ballpark clue of what it's worth. These businesses have to make a profit, of course, so no one will pay you full spot (except in the case of certain coins) - but obviously, you want to get as high a percentage of that as possible. read more
