You know you walk in somewhere and know they'll take care of you and give you the look you want? That's how I felt walking in Self. The name is a little silly, but the girls are sweet. Iris gave me a bang cut and blowout, and I felt amazing! I knew I was in good hands, and the small change made a huge difference than say, a cut. Thanks so much guys! read more

This is my third time coming to the salon and is been wonderful .. every hair cut I want I get it the same way I ask for .. Paul did a amazing job !! Love my fade and hair cut ... is worth the price read more

I had the best haircut of my life from Self Salon in Bushwick! Acasia did the cut and Megan did the color. I love it! Thank you Self!

The ambiance, the staff, the shampoo, and the haircut were all 5 stars. I plan to return. Thanks y'all.

After my bad experience the owner and manager Salon reached out to me to make it right and set me up with their devacurl certified stylist Chi in their beautiful Williamsburg location. Chi was really amazing, super knowledgeable and provided great service. She did what she could in terms of fixing my botched haircut and I left the salon with defined, moisturized curls as well as tips to keep my hair hydrated. She asked me questions about how I wear my hair and involved me in every step. I would recommend everyone to Chi, the client she worked on before me looked amazing as well so I knew I was in capable hands. Thanks again to management for reaching out and rectifying my situation, I had a great experience with Chi and look forward to coming back to her! read more

I got one of the best haircuts i've gotten in years from this place. I am super cynical about salons since i have ambiguous ethnic bushy hair. So I'm a touch customer but this place was really thoughtful, took my preferences seriously and really spent time on styling. I appreciated the care they took so much. read more

Acasia rocks!! I went to her for my yearly cut (I am pretty lazy about my hair) and she did a beautiful job and was a total sweetheart. She also sold me on some R+Co dry shampoo paste and it smells so good! read more

I had this most incredible haircut by Acasia Rose. I have very damaged fine flat hair and she made it luxuriously voluminous happy and healthy. Best haircut I've ever had - oh and the wash was unreal. Stress just melted away. Definitely recommend. read more

I got an amazing short haircut from Acasia Rose. I love it! She was fast, understood what I wanted and it came out great. I've been getting lots of compliments on the cut and would definitely recommend her and the salon to anyone. It's cute and conveniently located. read more

I've been here twice for bang cuts and finally today for a haircut. I really like it. The place is very clean and chic, and the gals who work there are always sweet and welcoming. Paige cut my hair and did a lovely job. read more

I hadn't had a professional haircut in 5 years, so I was really nervous to go in there. Everyone was so nice though! I had Paige and she knew exactly what to do with my hair even though I gave her a difficult haircut to work with. She didn't try and make awkward small talk the whole time she was cutting it, which was awesome. I'll definitely be back here in the next few months. read more

Having bad experiences at other hair salons, and getting my hair dyed badly I decided to try out Self salon. This place is amazing! Megan did an amazing job with my hair and did not damage it or do anything to my hair without my consent. She recommended how I should take my hair till my next visit. Can't wait till next time. Highly recommended read more

It had been a long time since I'd coloured my hair, about 10 years to be exact. I was a little bit nervous about doing something new with it. Megan did some hair painting and blow out (which is no small feat, I have curly hair and a lot of it) and she did a brilliant job. She communicated well, explained what she was doing and gave some great suggestions. I love my hair! read more

Andrea was awesome! I told her I wanted to keep the length long but a change from my usual long layers w/ a slight angle around my face. She told me what she was thinking and I just let her do it and I really liked the result. I trusted her thoughts and she gave me the change I needed. read more

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Self Salon! My husband and I both go here for our haircuts- he goes to the Williamsburg salon and I go to Bushwick. Maria is a amazing, I got my curls cut on Thursday and she gave me amazing bangs and a cut that i love!! Anna Rose did my color, which was equally as amazing! There are very talented and the experience is always amazing. I highly recommend the salon, esp for curly hair girls. read more

I've been here about 6-7 times so I'm overdue for a review. I've had curly haircuts, blow outs, and most recently colored my hair. Truly never disappointed here. I moved to Harlem and still have made the 1-hour journey here because I trust them with my hair. Obviously the hair folks are magical, but the front desk deserves a shout out. My favorite folks have been the ones who wash hair, get you water through out your appointment and greet you with a smile and take your coat when you come in. Thank you! I've been to both locations but have settled on the Bushwick one. Haircuts: never been dissapointed with Chi (Williamsburg) or Acasia (bushwick). Chi I find better if you don't know what you want because you can trust her to give you a look. Acasia I love because she really can create a look from a picture and really listens. Not just with the haircut but also with the styling. I've gotten at least 6 haircuts already. Color: I recently got full highlights (my first time) from Kat (bushwick). She's so sweet and knows what she's doing. I love love my color and friends who knew what I wanted were in awe that I got exactly that in one shot. read more

Needed a summer cut that was professional for work, but still had some texture and expression to it. Brought a few inspiration pics and a previous picture of myself with a semblance of the look I was going for. Acasia and I talked about what I wanted, and she took her time with scissor work and meticulous attention to detail. Not only did the cut look great walking out of the salon, even though that always feels a bit awkward when you're getting used to a new cut, but it has grown out perfectly. Acasia was friendly, positive, and attentive and really knows her stuff! read more

Last night was my third hair cut at Self Salon. Of course, I got caught up at work and showed up super late, and they really worked to fit my cut/color in, which was a lifesaver, because due to my stupid work schedule I wouldn't have had time for another appointment until sometime next week! The past two cuts were definitely great, and this time I am TOTALLY in love with both my cut (by Acasia) and color (by Kat)! It's everything I wanted and more, and I'm putting off washing my hair for as long as possible because their products smell so good! read more

I love my hair cut from Acacia Rose. She's been working my thick, curly hair for a year now and has been consistently great. She took one straight out of Peaky Blinders this time. Self Salon has a great feel. read more

I can't recommend Self Salon enough. I went to their website hoping I could get an appointment sometime within the next week. As luck would have it, Acasia had a cancellation and I was in the salon getting my hair cut 45 minutes later. Acasia and the entire staff were friendly and welcoming. After discussing the kind of cut I wanted, she made a few recommendations based on my hair type. She really took the time to make sure the cut/style was perfect. Overall a super relaxing and satisfying experience in a beautiful space. I'll definitely be back. read more

I LOVE this salon. Chelsea cut my hair and did a great job. She was super sweet and understanding of my vision. She also isn't a quite hairstylist... She will actually chat with you while cutting and styling your hair. Highly recommend her and Self! read more

The men's haircuts are $60 but they come with two free trims. I got my hair cut and loved how it turned out so I went back for a free trim. Whenever I scheduled my appointment, I let them know that it would be for the complimentary trim and whenever the stylist sat me down I also let him know that I want just a trim. Whenever I went to leave I had to pay the $60 again for a trim. I let it go because he did good and did cut quite a bit of hair. I decided to go a second time for another free trim and the same thing happened. This time he cut barely any hair and I was still charged $60. I will not be going back read more

My first review ever...coloured my hair way too dark. And Anne Rose didn't just correct it back to my original tone... she did magic. In one session. I've tried comparing it to an older experience.... actually there is no comparison possible. Not even close to what I was expecting. And I am just happy. And can't believe it. If you need a colour correction, this is your place to go. read more

i went in with brassy blonde hair and tragic roots (seriously not the cutest combo). After a cut from Paige and a major color correction from Kat, I walked out with EXACTLY what I wanted. Paige got rid of my dead ends from the summer and cut layers that would strategically dry well without styling if I'm feeling too lazy to blow dry (which is usually always). Kat turned my grown out roots into a balayage/ombre masterpiece. She kept my roots, painted them a little deeper down the crown, and toned down the blonde so the transition in color is flawless. I got my hair done about 3 hours ago, and I can't stop looking in every window or mirror I pass. Have already scheduled my follow up appointment! read more

I went to Self Salon yesterday for a drastic hair change. I have had curly hair all my life and went natural about a year ago. I have always had long hair as well, so I went in to self salon wanting to get a pixie cut. My stylist was Barbara, she greeted me warmly (despite me being 5 minutes late) and off we went. I told her that I wanted a pixie cut and showed her a couple photos of what I might want. She was so honest and told me that a pixie cut wouldn't work with my texture of hair. So I spoke to her more, she was so attentive even asking me what was my reasoning for wanting such a huge change. I couldn't thank her more for being so attentive and honest. While cutting my hair she'd stop often and ask if I was okay with what she was doing. She is clearly a stylist that cares about her customers, which is more than I can say for any stylist I've been to in my life. Although I didn't leave the salon with the pixie cut I thought I wanted, I did end up getting an asymmetrical curly cut that I just love! I will be going to Self Salon to see Barbara again and again! Also my cut was very reasonably priced 67 dollars at Self. I normally pay upwards of +80 to do my hair (that is, when a stylist doesn't refuse to do it because of my texture) The salon itself is clean, lets in a lot of light and has a very simple (but chic) vibe. read more

Relaxed environment, friendly staff, great haircut (courtesy of the amazing Acasia Rose)!

Dream team over there!! I got my hair colored for the first time in a while and I could not be more pleased with the results. Kat is super professional, kind and a true artist. Her and Barbara are a dynamic duo for curly haired girls. read more

Paul - who recently moved to the Bushwick salon from the Williamsburg salon - gave me an excellent cut. I have curly hair (type 3A) and have suffered several terrible cuts from stylists who didn't know how to cut curls, so I am always super grateful when I find someone who knows what they're doing. He's also really nice, as is everyone at the salon. And it's a nice space. read more

I have really short hair, which requires a lot of maintenance, and have been visiting this salon once a month, since March. I've had haircuts done by Paige and Blair, who did a wonderful job - but it should be noted, both stylists are no longer at this location - and recently had a haircut done by a new stylist at the salon. Although my last haircut was okay, I could not get over the fact they had raised (within 1 month) their price by +30%. I called to inquire the reason for such a drastic increase, and I was informed the increase was for all WOMENS haircuts (Read: No matter how short the length, if you're a woman, you will now pay 30% more per haircut). I was rather baffled when it was explained to me (by who I am presuming was the receptionist) that they were no longer considering the length of hair for haircut pricing, because they "didn't know where to draw the line." "This way, if a man with long hair comes in for a haircut, and a woman comes in with short hair... there's a line... and we know what to charge," she explained. I'm not sure what is more shocking - the fact that this salon would set-up a pricing strategy based solely on one's sexuality, or the fact that they believe women - no matter what - should pay more than men. I expressed that she should pass along the message that this is sexism - she offered me 10% off my next service. Great - then it would be only a 20% extra charge for being "cursed" a woman and wanting a "man's" haircut. Unfortunately this is a deal-killer... and also sexual discrimination. I'll take my hair (and my boobs) somewhere else. read more

I moved upstate after living in Brooklyn and I cannot express how I miss Paul Keo!! He is talented. He knows instinctively just what to do. I told him I wanted model hair (trick* I also have curly hair). I have never had a better cut. EVER, and I'm from LA, so I've had my hair share of overpriced, overhyped cuts. I haven't been to Self in over a year, but happen to land on this page because I keep almost getting around to make the 4 hr trip just to have a Paul Keo cut. I must in defense of Paul say that anyone raging about uneven cuts or whatever should just go somewhere a little more bourgeois and let the people of Bushwick be. Self, I will be back! read more

I booked a blowout and style on a whim before a wedding last weekend, and was assigned to Anna Rose. Not only is she adorable, fun and entertained me for the hour duration I was in her chair, but my hair has rarely looked better! I'll definitely be going back here next time I'm in town and in need of a good 'do. read more

I followed my colorist Kat Russo from another Salon to Self. You need to see her because she is awesome. The salon is spotless and a totally relaxed environment. Kat suggested hair painting opposed to my typical highlights. She spent hours on my hair, and I can honestly say, its never looked better! I get compliments all the time on the color. I had a cut with Michael who listened to my concerns about growing out my bangs, and gave me a great cut and blow out. So happy to have a great salon close to me ! read more

I love this salon! I'm the usually type of person that cuts there own hair, but i decided to treat myself and get an actual hair cut for once. I'm not usually thrilled when someone else cuts my hair, but Acasia was quick and amazing and gave me an awesome cut that I love. I'm def going back again. read more

I came to this salon earlier this year in desperate need of a haircut. I'd just moved to Bushwick from the Bronx and didn't know any local salon to go to. I booked a service for a haircut and straightening. Don't get me wrong, the girl who serviced me was great. She listened to everything I said and took great care of me. Her customer service alone I'd give her 5/5. Unfortunately, I am paying yo be satisfied with an outcome which is simply not what happened. Don't get me wrong, the haircut itself was great but that actual straightening was a nightmare. My hair was so beyond frizzy. It looked as if I'd just returned from walking in the rain. I am Latina with very thick and curly hair. I could just tell that my hairdresser was just so incredibly overwhelmed and didn't really know how to deal with it. I give her an A+ for effort but it was so bad. I had to go home and completely redo it myself. I would say, to an POC with thick curly (even frizzy) hair please think twice, even three times before coming here. read more

I got a cut by Julie last week and it's the best i've had in ages. She's modern and stylish without being trendy and I love my hair. I am very picky not just about my haircut, but I also want to love my stylist and julie is quietly cool and does the work without fanfare. Love my blowout too and the way she listened to everything I asked for. She's the tops. read more

Guy with curly hair, which means I always get terrible haircuts--until I found this excellent salon. Friendly, professional, worth the price. Barbara took her time and kept me informed. read more

I've been trying to grow out my hair since I dyed it blue last year then chopped it all off and it's been an interesting journey. For the last few months my hair has all been one length as the product of outgrown bob and I just felt like there wasn't anyway I could style it or part it where I liked the way it looked. I was so nervous about getting it cut (the last time was over 6 months ago) because I was trying to get it long again, but I knew I needed to get a trim and perhaps some layers. I had an amazing experience a few months ago at Self Salon when I got full bangs (but no cut otherwise) for the first time as an adult. So when I went today for my appointment I was confident they would help me out with my current hair situation. Acasia Rose did an amazing job giving my hair shape and helping my "growing out awkward phase bangs" blend in with the rest of my locks. It actually looks longer than before I cut it! I honestly haven't been this happy about a haircut in years and I no longer feel like I'm waiting for my hair to look a certain way-it's there! Thanks Self Salon you guys are the best! read more

Super bummed. Wanted to see if they had an appointment available in their online booking system, but they make you register for an account (okay, fine, did this) and then put in a credit card number BEFORE you can even SEE if there are any appointments available. Sorry, I don't want to do that. I'm trying to book online for convenience, I don't want to give you all of my financial details before I know if there's even anything available. :( read more

I got like a foot of my hair chopped off and Barbara was so wonderful! She was incredibly attentive and communicative. I love my cut--it looks great styled as well as air-dried. The atmosphere is chill, light, and beautiful. Alanis Morissette radio kept us all in check. Considering I looked like Alanis in her "Thank U" video going in and was rocking some serious Kate Middleton de rigeur wave coming out, I would say it was incredibly apropos. Anyone with hair in Bushwick should check this place out. read more

What an amazing experience at Self Salon in Bushwick! Firstly the salon itself is such a delight to walk into. Charming and bright decor, very welcoming receptionists and stylists. I booked a haircut with Acasia and hair painting with Megan. When I arrived I was greeted warmly with a smile and was offered water. Shortly after Acasia began working on my hair. She really understands the client's wants and imaginings. She gave me a beautiful haircut, that requires very little management, just what I wanted. An added bonus, she's incredibly sweet and bubbly. I went to Megan next. I never color my hair, but really wanted something soft and subtle for the summer. Megan gave great suggestions and listened to and understood what I wanted. Her hair painting technique is beautiful, that of a true artist. They styled my hair and I was very happy with the outcome. The next day after I washed my hair I noticed streaks of orange, this happens often when you try to lift such dark hair as mine. I called Self, they promptly got me in the next day with Megan. Once again I was greeted with a big smile and some water in a coolest kitty cup ever. Megan was running a bit behind, and while I was waiting both her and the receptionist approached me several times to apologize for the wait, which was truly appreciated. Megan happily did a glaze treatment which she recommended. The outcome, beautiful, soft, natural looking Ombré like highlights. Thank you everyone at Self Salon in Bushwick, you girls are an absolute pleasure! read more
