I saw this place being recommended by many of the local moms in the Maple Valley/Covington Mom group on facebook, so I checked out their website and found that Han Mu Do incorporates Aikido/Hapkido in their teaching! I contacted Washington Han Mu Do for my son to attend the trial class. My son loved the trial class, and he wanted to continue (He is one of the most undecisive kid on this earth, and him wanting to continue is a big deal). It's been almost 2 months since he started, and he loves the classes. The environment is very family friendly and they teach the kids respect and discipline in addition to martial arts (which my son needs badly). Their prime location is also what sealed the deal for us. They are located within close distance from the local elementary schools, which makes it convenient to take my son to the class after picking him up from the after school program. In the same center, there is Taco Time and McDonalds just across the street for easy dinner after the class.

Not so great if you want a mix of the physical and mental, yin and yang, contrary to the yin-yang symbol incorporate into their logo. While Han Mu Do is a good form of martial arts, the Maple Valley location is the only location in Washington State. You will likely start over if you leave. With only a few licensed instructors, mature students are often relied upon heavily to lead lower students and classes. Favorites are compensated, others are not. As a result, the schedule is not reliable due to leader availability. Unlike Washington Han Mu Do, other martial arts studios often include some aspects of Asian philosophy, such as an active focus on the balance between mind and body, meditation as part of the session, and understanding that spirit and body need to be in harmony. This studio is about forms, sets, and workouts. Repeat. Overall, a good cost to experience ratio when compared to a gym or other exercise place. But is that really what you wanted to do when you join a martial arts studio?

He was having a hard time in school and showing signs of depression at just seven years old. We knew of Ms. Mari's because my Nephew and Sister were former students who loved training there. They run a two month trial which allows you to see if this is something you would like to commit to. This deal is AMAZING! Two months of lessons with a uniform for just $99. I signed up both my seven and five year old sons and never looked back. One of the best parenting decisions I have made. My oldest has gained considerable confidence and belief in himself, while my five year old son is showing more respect and curbing his quick temper. They show the Tae Kwon Do moves and also explain the way you would use them in a real life application. If a student is in need of more assistance with a specific move they will have an instructor, or peer with a higher belt work solo with them to ensure that they get it. Do not hesitate to try Ms. Mari's! She's an amazing instructor and anyone fortunate enough to train with her should consider themselves lucky.

Ms Mari and her staff are kind but firm and our boys are learning skills for self defense as well as self confidence. This year our oldest has joined the leadership team which will continue his personal growth. For us it is an after school care option that provides physical activity with discipline. We highly recommend this dojang for your kiddos.

I brought my son in as a wild, high energy 7 year old who couldn't sit still in class for 5 minutes (let alone stop talking for a second ), who at 9 is a respectful, attentive, active participant in all his classes (judo and at school). He is in great shape now and really strives to learn in class. I couldn't be more proud of the young man he is becoming, and I think I owe so much of that to judo, and more specifically, Sensei Tom and Highlands judo dojo. Sensei Tom is an incredibly patient and attentive teacher, who grew up himself in judo and uses his own stories to help the kids understand the important of respect and tradition. The dojo is clean and safe and follows all of the (ever changing) Covid guidelines. My son couldn't be happier, and we as a family could not be more grateful. Highly, truly recommend.

After the open house and meeting Sensei Tom, we decided to try this place as well. Sensei Tom has one heck of a job wrangling everybody from age 6 to 60 in his classes. He's a freaking SAINT when you see his youngest class. Sensei Tom is the perfect mix of patience and discipline for that age group. He must get frustrated at times but it doesn't show. I love watching the kids try new exercises and work together. The dojo itself is clean, doesn't smell, and perfectly simple.
