This school is clearly more about the money than the success of its students. The instructors used to be more skilled and now it looks like they are just trying to get through the class rather than actually wanting to help students. More than half of the class is spent doing jumping jacks and conditioning exercises rather than actually teaching Taekwondo. I don't remember the last time I saw Hwang's focus on the quality of kicks, sparring techniques, blocks, stances, and the individual weaknesses of the kids. They typically rush through these aspects whenever they do go over them --which leaves the students with terrible form and a lack of skills for self-defense. There is barely any space for the parents to sit down as well. They used to have an upstairs area where parents and students could hang out but now they have been trying to lease the upstairs space for the past three years. It just shows that they care more about the money than the students and families that are a part of the dojang. It also feels like most of the instructors don't care anymore. I mean during belt-level tests, students sometimes have an instructor in front of them telling them step-by-step how to do the poomsae when students are supposed to memorize these to receive the belt. It's an absolute joke! This place is nowhere close to a school or an academy or anything to do with teaching. The instructors look like they have lost their passion for Taekwondo and teaching. If you are looking for a place to learn how to properly learn Taekwondo, this is NOT the place for you.

At age 5, she started at a different martial arts school in the area, to help her gain some skills to overcome her shyness. Unfortunately, this other school's teaching style did not accommodate kids like her, who are more hesitant and cautious, which was disappointing, because this was one of the reasons why we wanted her to try martial arts. At the first sign of nervousness, she was told that weakness and tears were "not allowed on the mat," and was made to sit out. At age 5. Which I found appalling. Enrolling instead at Hwang's was one of the best decisions we have made. The instructors have been patient and encouraging, never shaming her when she has struggled. Instead, with just the right amount of good-natured encouragement, she has felt supported and welcomed, has overcome so much anxiety and self-doubt, and three years later she is a proud junior black belt, at age 8. The confidence she has gained has carried over into her school and social life, and I can safely say that we largely have Hwang's to thank for this. I feel that the curriculum for kids is age-appropriate and a good balance and progression of physical and mental discipline. General kids' classes do not teach hardcore elite-level technique, and that is fine. Students seeking more intensive martial arts experience are free to sign up for private lessons, or ask about enrolling in the Olympic training class. There will always be fees involved with testing and tournaments, and black belt promotion involves time and financial commitment just as at any reputable taekwondo school. For the positive changes we have seen in our daughter through taekwondo at Hwang's, we strongly feel that the investment is well worth it. Also, black belts are registered with the Kukkiwon in Korea, which is widely known as the world taekwondo headquarters. In other words, Hwang's is legit. Lead instructors and masters have all been welcoming, friendly, and willing to take time to answer any questions or concerns. All the instructors, including the assistants, are excellent role models for the younger students. Master Hwang takes pride in each student who comes through the door. The enrollment has grown a lot recently, and the school is undergoing renovations to accommodate the growth. Parking can be a challenge, but there is extra space available farther up the "street"at PSE. Our family looks forward to many more years to come, and more dan stripes on those belts.

What started by chance became one of the most meaningful journeys of her life, and ours. Over the years, she progressed through every belt rank with discipline, determination, and commitment. In 2024, she earned her first-degree black belt, and in May 2026, she proudly earned her second-degree black belt. She was also the only girl in her second-degree testing cycle, something that made us even more proud of her determination, resilience, and commitment. DMW Martial Arts has truly changed her as a person. We watched her grow from a timid and shy child into a confident, respectful, focused, and resilient young woman. The lessons learned here go far beyond martial arts. The journey to second degree was not easy. Six and sometimes seven days a week of training, high expectations, and constant dedication taught her perseverance, accountability, teamwork, and resilience. Even during school breaks and family vacations, training remained part of her routine. The owners are incredibly committed and hold a high standard for helping young martial artists grow. This is not an easy path, but that is exactly what makes it so meaningful. Students are challenged, supported, and pushed to become stronger, both mentally and physically. As parents, we feel incredibly fortunate that she found purpose, structure, and a strong community through DMW Martial Arts. A heartfelt thank you to the owners, Dan Cartan and Miss Karen, as well as Instructor Jake, Instructor Chris, Miss Rein, and Russy. You are a powerful team whose dedication, leadership, and belief in your students leave a lasting impact. Thank you for helping shape the person she is today. This journey is not just your child's journey. The entire family walks it together, supports it together, and grows through it together. If we had to do this journey all over again, we would choose DMW Martial Arts without hesitation. If you are looking for a martial arts school that teaches far more than technique, DMW Martial Arts is truly something special.

Super friendly and they learned more than just martial art. Master Kwon taught them how to respect others and listen to parents. Then Master Kwon moved away for a bit (a couple years). I did hear he came back and decided to enroll my kids to his class again. Kids are happy to attend his class again and relearning what they forgot. Master Kwon is sincere and cares about what his students are learning from his class. I highly recommend this place for you or your children.

My son ended up joining and his friend didn't, which was kind of funny since he was the one who suggested it. As my son continued, I thought it looked like so much fun so I joined in too. Master Kwon and Instructor Kwon is a husband and wife team and they are so kind and nice. They push the kids to be respectful, focused, confident and kind. They are true role models for these kids as well as the adults. They are also very precise and position their students exactly where their hands need to be and where their foot placement should be. They also build up the kids confidence, and it's like night and day. We have watched so many kids grow from these shy and almost meek kids into confident and strong children. The great thing as well is that they don't teach the kids to "fight". They teach them self defense, respect, kindness and discipline. They have a 5 stripe system where the kids can earn a trophy at each belt test if they do 5 tasks. 1) read 14 books, 2) do 10 chores a day for 60 days, 3) teacher sign off for their schooling, 4) testing for their form and 5) parent sign off of their papers to get the last stripe. And that last stripe is a goal that the parents can set for their kids. It's a great system and it makes sure that the kids study, are kind to their teachers and other kids at school, they do their chores at home, and are respectful to their parents and siblings. My son even started doing competitions which he didn't want to do at first. After some encouragement by myself and the Kwons, he finally decided to enter into a competition. He was really nervous at first, but now after 2 competitions under his belt, he has built up a lot of confidence and is now excited to continue entering into more competitions. I can't say enough about Master and Instructor Kwon. They are so nice, kind and sweet. They are very inspiring and our lives are so much better from learning from their example.
