I'm grateful to Luiz and his excellent crew. They did a wonderful job on paving our driveway and side entrance steps. My wife and I love the result. Additionally, when the job scope significantly increased due to unforeseen events, Luiz went above and beyond in handling the extra work. To begin: I got 3 bids for my project. Luiz came by and he had the most detailed proposal. He pointed out the lack of proper sloping near the garage, which led to water pooling. He also explained some mysterious holes in the ground: they were the other end of drainage pipes from the side of the house. Luiz fixed the driveway to properly slope down, and moved those ugly water holes so that the side house drains into the end of the street. Luiz asked the city to mark electricity/gas/cable hookups, as expected. Unfortunately, the city was wrong. After digging up the driveway, Luiz discovered our main electrical pipe was inches below the driveway (not 3 feet, as required by code), and it was corroded. The city immediately shut off electricity to our house, out of caution. Luiz worked with the city's electrical department, building inspections, permitting office, and my electrician to handle this. I'm grateful for his ownership of this stressful period. Luiz even brought a generator so that my fridge/freezer would keep running. I can't recommend Luiz and his crew enough. I'm so glad we went with them, both because the driveway looks great but also because of how he handled the electrical pipe problems. Luiz helped me fix up my backyard in April 2020 and everything is still in great shape a year later. It was an absolute pleasure doing business with Select Pavers on our backyard project. In order to find a good contractor for my backyard project, I basically looked at all pavement and landscaping contractors on yelp, and picked 4 contractors with license for interview and quote. All these contractors have good reviews on yelp and the projects they did look awesome. Luiz, the owner of Select Pavers, is the last contractor my husband and I interviewed. We decided to work with Luiz because of his professionalism, competitive and transparent prices, and excellent communication/customer service. I like the itemized quote Luiz provided, clearly listing all charges and no hidden cost. And he totally understands the quoted items might be removed as design changes. Due to my vacation, HOA approval and material lead time, my project was just done in October though I contacted Luiz this April. Of the four contractors from whom we got estimates, Select was by far the lowest ($7k lower than the next cheapest, and more than $20k lower than the highest). Normally this might make me hesitant, but based on their great reviews we went ahead with them, and weren't disappointed. The work itself looks great, and the communication was very good throughout. Either Luiz or Neto (the lead guys) was on site at least once almost every day, and when they weren't around, they kept me well updated by phone and email. We chose Belgard Catalina Grana pavers (in Riviera with graphite border) and WaterSavers Supernatural 80 turf. There were a couple of delays because of weather and also a delay in the turf being delivered, but overall the process was pretty smooth, and the team was conscientious about keeping our property clean. Called to request a quote to fix a problem installed by a previous company. The project includes 100 sq feet of concrete to be broken up and replaced by pavers to resolve drainage issue, and also six concrete 4' footing to be poured under a paver patio and the existing pavers replaced (for a gazebo). Woman with the thickest accent picked up the phone and was a little dismissive and said "just so u know we require minimum requirement of 100 sq feet" So i replied, "I think its about 100," She then replied "no i said 400." Hello, If you are reading this I assume you are using Yelp to search for paver contractors. I just completed our backyard project which included 2/3 of the yard becoming a paver patio and the remaining 1/3 being landscaping gravel. After an exhausting search for the right contractor, I chose Select Pavers and I am very happy I did. So why did I choose Select Pavers? Good communication (they responded to my many questions/comments over email and text which is a must for me due to my busy work schedule), hands-on small business owners (Neto or Luiz showed up to the job every day), Select Pavers offered a lot of small extras others would charged for, for example, installation of PVC/conduit, and their price was very competitive (they really give you a lot of value). Select Pavers is owned/run by two brothers, Luiz and Neto. They are very hands on, know what they are doing, and made a lot of good suggestions after reviewing my plans. They have a good selection of small bobcat skiff loaders and even a small excavator. These can fit into amazingly small areas (less than 6ft wide) and made removal of existing concrete mow strips and walk-ways much easier. Plus because the existing grass area was about 5" above grade and I wanted 6" underlay, they had to remove a lot of dirt (approximately 12 inches in some places). They removed a section of our fence to allow access in/out of the backyard and re-installed it after the job was completed. During the job they would put it back in place temporarily at the end of the day. They also have various dump trucks so we didn't need to have the huge dirt bin in our driveway or next to the house. All the dirt/concrete was dug up, loaded into their trucks and taken away (mostly all in one day). A big concern for me was water drainage, while it doesn't rain often, our weather is very unpredictable and the last thing anyone wants is flooding and water damage. This was an area where Neto really helped. After reviewing my plans and inspecting the yard, he suggested we install three drains in low areas of the yard. They blend well with the pavers and are installed into the border. Issues will arise and sometimes design changes are needed, Neto and Luiz worked with me to solve them in a very professional way So I highly recommend Select Pavers! Here is some additional notes and advice: I suggest you do your own research on paver installation best practices, for example 4" to 6" underlay, barrier cloth between clay & underlay, ... Google is very helpful. Also pick your paver brand and style. Costs vary quite a bit. Visit local building material companies such as PBM or Garden Supply. We looked at Calstone and Belgard and ended up choosing Belgard. I liked that Belgard pallets contain the multiple stone sizes for a particular style (reduces partial pallets & cost). Calstone is very nice too, but their pallets contain a single size (increases partial pallets & cost). The paver style we choose was Catalina Grana which is very popular. We mixed colors to liven things up, choosing 40% Barcelona (reddish) and 60% Victorian (grey) and a Barcelona border. I think it turned out great! During my search, I had a very difficult time getting and keeping some contractor's attention. Some would visit the house, inspect the yard and review my plans, promise a quote and then crickets chirping. I even had some contractors working on a quote, asking questions, then more crickets. For me, communication is super important when choosing a contractor. Poor communication = fail. I received a wide range of prices for basically the same job. I had a fairly detailed drawing plan with dimensions which I highly recommend. Why the huge difference? No telling, but in general if someone's quote is super low or super high, I avoid. Lastly I suggest you do your own research on paver installation best practices, for example having a minimum of 4" to 6" gravel underlay, barrier cloth between clay & underlay, ... The quality of the work done by Select Pavers is just outstanding. They carefully prepared the site - gravel and sand - and then laid the pavers in so perfectly they would not shift or develop gaps. The whole thing slopes away from the house, with any water runoff going into a french drain system that will carry the water out to the street. The design is just beautiful. There are curves in the design that required careful cutting of the stones. We also needed two steps to lead from sliding doors out to the patio - the steps are beautiful with bullnose perimeters. It was important to me to support a family owned business and I am so glad I did. Luiz (and his brother Neto) own the company. There was always a supervisor on the ground, their turnaround time on questions was quick, and in many cases when my wife and I were not sure what would make sense they would also advise us on the best course of action. They were super flexible to accommodate any changes we wanted ( that were not discussed before) and their answer was always "it can be done". Parking was tight in front of our house but they did a great job of getting their vehicles in and out with no disruption to us or our neighbors. It was hassle free for us! It has been almost a year since I got my driveway done by Select Pavers, and the pavers have held up well. So finally posting this review. These guys are amazing! They dont subcontract the work like a lot of other construction companies. Luiz or Neto actually supervise the work themselves. So the quality of the work is really good! And you can do a lot of customization and get the exact setup you want. If some work needs to to be added after the contract is signed, they are really accommodating and do not charge exorbitant rates. Their equipment is good quality, which results in less noise during the construction process. read more
