I visited Select Beer Store over Labor Day weekend and was so amazed by their variety of beers on the shelves. They had everything! From the more known beers and to the totally obscure beers from the farthest corners of the furthest countries. On top of that I was blown away by the friendliness and knowledge of the staff. They knew what every single beer that I pointed at. I am a very picky person full of opinions and they managed to keep pouring me things a thoroughly enjoyed. It was great to come to a friendly place to have a quiet beer after spending the day at the beach with screaming children. I saw that the owner ordered a pizza for his staff. Its the small gestures like this that confirms that this is a great place. Good for everyones moral! read more

Let me start by saying that if you are coming here to drink cheap, yellow, fizzy beer and watch football, do yourself a favor and walk to one of the 328 other bars in the South Bay that offer that. If you want to drink an incredibly fresh craft beer while meeting people in your community and striking up a real conversation (not ignoring them and staring like a zombie at a TV) at a store that knows and cares for beer, then this is your place. Sure, other big box stores like BevMo, Total Wine, etc have a big selection but the key difference with Select Beer is the staff actually takes care of the beer meaning it is fresh and at its optimal condition. From keeping 90% of its bottles refrigerated to taking the extra step of putting UV coating on its cooler lights (UV light damages beer) to meticulous cleaning of its draft system, these people know how to keep beer tasting good. Staff is friendly and highly knowledgeable about beer (unlike many big box stores). One of my favorite places to have a beer in the South Bay. read more

Prepare yourself for an absolute treat. As if the 300 bottled varieties in the coolers to your left as you enter the establishment are not enough, the 12 taps directly in front of you will most certainly get your attention. The finest ale in the land flows through these taps, and the turnover in choices is both frequent and often. The quality of offerings is mind-blowing. Let's say you want to sample the only American style of ale (that being the relatively new Double IPA) - chances are there's a tap for that. Perhaps a Strand Brewery (Torrance) Black IPA? There was some of that during the exceptionally well-attended Grand Opening. How about some Sour Black Ale - sweet Jesus and Katie bar the door - there was some of that as well. And the list goes on. Double dry-hopped IPA? Check. New Belgium (Abbey) Grand Cru? Check. Lagers, Pilsners, Reds, Blondes, Stouts, Belgians, Hefeweizens - and did I mention that most of these are available as 4-ounce tasters? As an aside, cleanliness is paramount - this place is *spotless*. The lines are professionally purged every time a keg is changed, and every glass is re-rinsed before being filled. You could either drive thousands of miles to sample these at their home breweries in all of their fresh goodness, or just pull up a stool at the bar, or a chair at one of the 8 or so tables, and sit a spell. Like a box of chocolates, you never know exactly what will be available across the dozen taps, but all of those bottles in the coolers? Yeah, any of them can be poured for a modest cappage fee - and to say that the selection is world class is putting it mildly. By the way, there's refreshing ginger beer (an excellent palate cleanser), notable root beer, and mineral water in those coolers for the non-drinker as well. Food is not served, but menus and delivery from nearby bistros are available, and patrons are encouraged to bring their own food as well. The owners and staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly love what they do. It is a feather in the cap of Redondo Beach to have this establishment here. Drop by - if you've never enjoyed a proper ale, allow the staff to offer you as much or as little education as you want. It's an empty Tuesday evening, 3 of us walk in, hoping for a few beers and some laughs. One of us does not drink so she brings in tea from coffee bean. The rude, offensive, female bartender spots us and our scenario. Decides tonight's her night to flex her power trip, treats us like bottom barrel scum, since we weren't ALL drinking THEIR koolaid. This honestly left the worst sour taste in our mouths from this small business. I've met the owners, they're nice (they get one star each), but their choice of employees is sub par at best. Selection - 5 stars! Knowledgeable owners and staff - 5 stars! Craft-beer ambiance - 5 stars! Selection - 8 stars! No, 9 stars! No... Select Beer is what happens when people follow their dreams - they get it exactly right. The selection is fantastic - both on tap and in bottles. I don't know how anyone can leave the place empty handed. Avoid a comparison with Naja's - they serve completely different purposes. You WILL learn a thing or two about beer at Select, drink something Naja's didn't think of, and the taps are always fresh. I might add that you can use the restroom at Select wearing your prom dress and not a nasty bit of anything will stick to your tulle. I like Naja's just fine, but this is a different kind of place. I'm was a Belgian beer snob (throw in a SD-style IPA or two for good measure), but the folks at Select Beer have a much broader view. My horizons have expanded. I thank them for that! read more

A very solid store. Not just your typical liquor store. The entire place makes you feel like you're in your dad's den simply full of beer from wall to wall. The fun knick knacks on the walls plus the seating spots add another touch of cozy to the atmosphere. Another thing that separates this place from a typical liquor store is that they host events. Not too long ago there was a chili cook festival and a mini Oktoberfest. PLUS, Select Beer Store has a bar including tastings. This place is awesome! You're here at the Select Beer Store to try something a little different. I say only a little different because you still have some of your familiar beers, but also many unique and more rare beers. If it's something you want to drink before heading out, they offer a service where you can drink your beer of purchase from inside their very own store. A few bucks extra to do so but I say it's worth it. I'm definitely a fan of this place, however, it might cost just a tiny bit more for a bottle here than at other competitive liquor stores. On the plus side, the service is very knowledgeable and very friendly. It's not run by a lonely guy with the usual "uuuuhhh" attitude. You have genuine people here with a personality that shouts, "please, take our beer and drink with us." Service is definitely top notch. When you put everything together, this liquor store puts together both purchase and fun experiences together. That's what really sets this place apart. Wine snobs beware. Beer lovers have a secret club and it meets at Select Beer Store. Beer snobs is what they are but that's okay, you don't have to sniff the bottle or squeeze the cork to enjoy it (they do tend to all look alike though... kind of on the scruffy side, generally trending to facial hair and red noses...luckliy that's what I'm into). So drink in store or take your beverages home. If you stay, you can bring your dinner in and eat it at several tables inside. We saw lots of folks with bags from Trader Joe's, scarfing down bread, cheese, chips salsa etc. with tall glasses of amber lager. If you're gluten intolerant better steer clear! The selection of beer on tap is one of the best in the south bay, if not THE best (I'm talking quality, not quantity). I like how there's something new on the menu every time I go in. I like to explore beer and these guys are my travel agent. A friend and I came in one night with a mission to find 6 different kinds of beer to share with our ladies back home. We got three on our own and Wes helped with the last three. I didn't have an IPA on my list and he suggested the Anchorage Brewing Co. Galaxy White IPA. Wow. It was a pleasant surprise and a great suggestion, definitely the crowd favorite. The other three bottles were also fitting for the evening, (we got one more for artistic merit) and we were well decorated for a mission well done (several medals because the wild card was named Panty Peeler :). These guys and gals know beer. You come here to drink beer and buy beer and talk about beer. You can come in and talk about other stuff as well of course, but if you really want to talk beer with people who know beer this is the place. I also like that you can bring in your own food if you want. I actually feel kind of bad for the Riviera Mexican Grill next door. SO: I have seen this spot countless times before, I am found at Mexican Riviera Grill next door quite often (they share a parking lot). Every time I walk past, it looks like it has a good vibe. Last night the manfriend and I were told that a table at the Riv was going to be minimally 25-30 minutes on account of three larger parties. Well, what we would normally do is go to the bar and just grab a marg whilst we wait, but lo and behold! The bar was solid packed. Now, I am not a beer drinker, hence why I have never stopped by Select Beer. BUT me being the doll that I am (ha ha) I told the manfriend we could go by so he could grab one for the wait. We sit down and immediately are greeted by a bubbly and friendly fellow named Chris who gave us the 411 and guess what? THEY. HAD. WINE!!! Not the biggest selection, I believe they were three reds and three whites but shoots I'm not complaining! The whole experience was short and sweet but great, none the less. Our buzzer went off earlier than expected for dinner so we did have to drink and dash but you can bet you'll be seeing us here again before dinner from now on. read more

Like manna from Heaven, this place dropped into my Hollywood Riviera neighborhood while I was on extended duty on the East Coast. I came back to find a happy little craft/specialty/import beer community had sprung up next to Riviera across from the Chevron island. Owners Wes & Heather, beermelier (OK I made that word up) David, and the whole gang are friendly and accessible enough for the neophytes and knowledgeable and creative enough for the masters. The prices per pour are fair, especially given the craftsmanship in selection and presentation (check out the gas blender in the kegs fridge if David gives you a chance), and there's always the $2-4 taster pour for the commitment-phobe (or those who, like me, would die if I drank a pint of every delicious variety on draft). With Wes' deliberate choice to eschew TVs onsite, actual conversations ensue at the bar, and they're often both interesting and unpredictable - on recent visits I've chatted with backpackers, a CEO, a sound designer, scientists, schoolteachers, and a classic car restorer, all with fresh perspectives. With comfortable table and bistro-style seating as well, it's suitable for dates, business associates, and buddies, or just a solo pop-in. I am ecstatic to buy excellent take-out beer there for parties etc., too, as I know my beer dollar is going straight to local, independent business. First, I want to say the service was excellent. The two tending the bar were hospitable, attentive and courteous. I gave a three star review due to the "blah" feeling my wife and I felt along with the inflated prices. The absent of televisions made the place feel mute. Yes, there was some background music, however a little ESPN really goes a long way. I was disappointed with no food or snacks being available for purchase. I think a high end nut selection or some type of snack goes great with a premium beer. I liked the option of being able to purchase a beer and drinking it right there, but I can do the same at Whole Foods. The beer is slightly higher than Whole Foods and they do not add the $1.50 premium for drinking it on the spot. The added charge is not necessary. The beer section is good, but no better than Total Wine, BevMo, or Whole Foods. A mark of a good beer bar (in my opinion) has a Russian River brew on tap; none here. My wife and I love going to beer bars all over the nation, this place is just three stars. No more, no less. read more

Love it! Over 350 bottled beers to choose from - Belgians, Germans, even Scotland. Plus about 8 microbreweries on tap including Lagunitas, Strand, and Monkish. I was really impressed by this place. The bartender even helped me find a new favorite (Celis White - if you like Hooegarden, it's the same master brewer). Note: While we there last week, the owners of Smog City were there celebrating their city approval for a new brewery in Torrance. They said it will be around the corner from Monkish in Torrance....on Del Amo blvd just west of Western. They hope to be open by Feb 2013. read more

This place is like a high-end AM/PM except only for beer and with much-much-lower chance of a stabbing incident. Maybe it's the large cooler that gives me that impression. Anyway, it's packed with a wide array of craft brews and you're sure to find something special. I usually get dragged here by a friend and always end up trying several new unique and delicious beers. This place isn't in my neighborhood, but I wish it was. The owners and the staff are extremely welcoming and friendly. Great resource for craft beer. Selection isn't overly intimidating, but they carry many west coast labels and my usual east coast loves (ommegang, dogfish, etc). They have about one cold case dedicated to each style (ipa, stout, etc) and a dry shelf area with many similar labels plus some. On a Saturday night pickup, I noticed that most tables/bar seating were full of people in a very chill way. They had a good dozen beers on tap. I had asked the bartender for a suggestion for a sour beer and was a little disappointed in the recommendation when I cracked it open with a friend. The added benefit is that you can buy a draft, or pick a bottle and have them pour it. What a great concept! Sure, wine may be my passion, but I love a good pint of beer. In fact, don't tell anyone, but I may drink beer more often than wine. Select Beer and Tap Room is probably one of the major causes for this. The owner, Wes, has put together the perfect place to explore and discover all types of interesting, wonderful and hard to find beers. He's adept at selecting and suggesting different beers for every palate. I personally love getting a bunch of different testers so I can compare and enjoy more flavors and types of beer. It is a beer store and tap room. There is no food. However, Wes is very open to bringing in food from other places and even ordering delivery to the Tap Room. It's a great environment - very friendly and casual - and believe it or not, a good place for a date or to meet up with a long lost friend. This is a man cave, but women are most definitely welcome. Just happened to walk into this place yesterday and was I happy that I did. I am always on the quest for a place with solid craft beer, and since I moved up here from San Diego, I have found the scene lacking. I am very happy to hear that Wes and his wife at Select Beer are helping anchor the craft beer market in the South Bay. And I am happier still that it is walking distance from my house! All the other positive reviews here convey the same message: about 10 taps that rotate based on distributor availability. An extremely comprehensive bottle selection (one of the other reviewers with 3 stars said that it wasn't any better than Whole Foods or BevMo, that is 100% BS). There is no food here, but Wes has no problem with you bringing it in from the many surrounding eateries and pairing with his tasty beverages. No TVs, but who the hell cares? It might be nice for them to put some effort into getting some good tunes in the background... next time there I'm going to see if I can help with this endeavor. Overall, simple and straightforward, and what is nice is that the set up is very conducive to having conversations with the people around you. Imagine that, strangers actually talking to each other! While there, I happened to meet a few of the other characters/owners of the local craft beer world the area. I am glad to see that it is an actual community. This is going to be fun! read more

Finally now I do not have to drive down to westwood or orange county to get my craft beer fix. The store is done up really nice and even has a bunch of UV ray blockers so all the beer does not get skunked by the sunlight. They have a few tables inside and out along with a small bar so you can enjoy whats on tap or pop a bottle that you just bought. They have a vast selection of all different types of craft beers only drawback is they dont have anything on the rare/hard to get side but that will come after the distributors see they are in business for awhile.
