What a disappointment. Made a reservation with the intention of taking my friend from out of town, and they wouldn't let us in the door due to our footwear (flip flops). We were dressed very nicely, and nowhere on the reservation or restaurant website does it say that flip flops are prohibited. I recommend Sei Less for sure. The vibe is super cool. The music is cool and at a moderate level. It's very classy so ladies please wear your heels and pretty dress. You walk in and turn to the stairs on the right and go up one flight. They have a huge bar, a lot of staff. Our waiter was great. Attentive they are! We had it all. Also both good. Had a Stella, but make sure you ask for bottle or they'll give you tap. Crème brûlée for dessert was bleh. OMG we were in New York City for two days didn't know where to eat we saw this really cool looking neon sign decided to pop in and have dinner. They didn't have room for us but we came back the following day and pretty much had the most amazing meal of our lives. The vibe was super cool almost felt exclusive and we had the best food. The service is great and the prices were very reasonable. Would highly recommend. Dara the owner was incredibly gracious and came to our table to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. I was only offered a cheap shot of alcohol or a house salad for an expensive mistake . I'm at a company dinner and they only offer to take my portion off the bill... this is affecting me personal and not the company; they should've gave credit or even a gift card and neither one was considered . I don't normally leave reviews but this place had some of the worst food I have ever had. I brought my fiancé here for his birthday and was so disappointed. The place is nice, but as soon as we were seated it smelled like dirty mop water. The server came quickly, got our orders. We got the Sei Less Drink More drink and it was ok. For apps we got scallion pancake and chicken dumplings, again just ok. The entrees were a big no. My fiancé got the filet mignon and broccoli and it literally tasted like freezer burn and the flavors were not good. It was so horrible we had to send it back, which is the first time we have ever sent back food. I got the short rib and just had 2 bites because it just wasn't good. We also got vegetable lo mein, and had to ask for salt because it was so bland. They gave us a bowl of rice that was hard. All of our food came out in less than 10 minutes which tells me they're just putting things in a microwave. We were in the restaurant for less than an hour and left starving. Presentation for everything looked nice, but that's about it. If you're going here for drinks, and not to eat, then you should be fine. read more

Same menu as all the other fancy NYC Asian spots (Philippes, Brooklyn Chop House etc) however I have to say this place had the strongest Lychee Martini out of the 3. I only gave it 3 stars due to the fact that they want to charge $50 to park in the front when it is NYC metered parking. They hold down all the parking spots between the block with cones and call that Valet. Highly doubt that's legal. read more

One word: Frustrating. Food was excellent but experience was lacking. Arrived 20 minutes early for our reservation but we were seated immediately with no hassle. Off to a good start. I did the restaurant week menu while my friend ordered an appetizer and entree a la carte, plus we ordered one extra appetizer for the table. Rock shrimp tempura and short rib bao buns were very good, and the chicken satay skewers were excellent! The Beijing chicken and Kung pao chicken were both good entrees, and the chocolate mousse and yuzu cheesecake desserts were very good as well. The service though was spotty. The appetizers and entrees came out together (same for the table next to us so I guess that's just how they do things there???), and then our server disappeared once the food came. Would have liked some chopsticks but they weren't offered, and I had to keep turning around to try and make eye contact with our server to order another drink mid meal. Afterwards if my friend hadn't asked for a dessert menu, I'm 100% sure mine would have arrived (since I was asked my selection up front as part of the restaurant week menu) without anyone ever checking with him. And when he ordered there was no ask if we wanted coffee, tea, or anything else. Finally, as some other reviewers have mentioned, the tip was automatically added, but there was no explanation of what percent it was. And when the card receipt arrived to sign there was a blank tip line with no indication that the tip had already been included. Usually I add a tip on top of whatever is included, but I was too frustrated to make an effort to figure it out this time. There's also a line for "Cash Discount" if you pay with cash instead of a card, but it's not a discount, it's an extra 4% of the food & drink subtotal that's added if you pay with a card - a bit misleading. I do want to add though that the bus staff was very attentive. My drink slipped out of my hand due to to the odd shaped glass and condensation on the outside (excuses lol), and someone came over quickly to clear it up and put a napkin over the spill. Also our water glasses never got more than halfway empty, which is usually a good indication of an attentive wait staff. If I could have I would have put an extra tip line specifically for those guys. read more

Problem with this restaurant is that NYC is over saturated with these restaurants with the same menu owned buy the same people to cater to different demographics. Philippe will always be #1 in my book. The decor is dark and "intimate" but could use more liveliness. The music is great for an urban crowd and it's instagram worthy. I am not sure what the hype is about this place, but I assume that the experience at dinner, or after hours on a weakened is the time to go. it is definitely not lunch on a Wednesday. I will walk you through the experience, because there is no detail too small to spare. 1. Entered on 38th street through large doors. I work a block away and it is clear that this location used to be a private club (gentleman's?) because of the curved wall of glass block facing the street. Upon entering there were closed velvet curtains to our left, and curved stairs to the right which you have to ascend to get to the dining area and bar. Very not ADA compliant. 2. There were no less than 50 boxes of deliveries in the entry way which had just arrived. The place looked like it was still being decorated or staged. 3. There is a semi circle of dining areas surrounding a long, proud bar that is frankly the most impressive part of the décor. More closed velvet curtains along the left wall - we passed maybe 15 empty tables before we were sat along the same wall as everyone else - all the tables I could see, that were not behind curtains, line the walls Our table was directly next to the kitchen door. 4. Must have been a very off day - the exhaust in the kitchen is broken and large clouds of greasy smoke billowed out of the open kitchen doors throughout the hour+ we were seated resulting in coughing, burning eyes, and our clothes and hair saturated with a burning oil smell. 5. The waiter, who was very, very nice and professional never mention the smell or the smoke which was very odd. 6. The food: everything was deep fried and over salted. There is nothing special about this food in comparison to average Chinese-American food and I didn't enjoy it at all. - Chicken satay - why is this deep fried and a red color? - Rock shrimp - the spicy mayo sauce was too generous, and the shrimp were bland although cooked well - Black pepper shrimp - slightly larger shrimp than the app, lots of large red onion pieces, very nice White Beech mushrooms (a highlight) and lots of greasy, sugary brown sauce. If you like standard Chinese food, this was it - I prefer less sauce and something a little lighter. 7. The after-smell for the entire day was a real disappointing party favor - a coworker even commented that I smelled like food in the office. Even without a kitchen disaster, which should have been acknowledged and addressed, the layout is too spread out and focused on the bar which might create a fun atmosphere for dinner or late night drinking, but not for lunch or a regular night dinner experience. From what I read, the restaurant is designed for a certain crowd and atmosphere and it's palpable when you are not part of that group because the space doesn't function to be welcoming or comfortable outside of that very specific experience. read more

I had the black bean shrimp as an entree, delicious! It was truly flavorful. As for appetizers we had vegetables dumplings 9/10. Vegetable spring rolls were also a 9/10, crispy and filled with veggies. Next were the satays... I was not very happy with these. It was unlike any satays I've had before, it was a lot on the sweeter side and I couldn't have more than one bite. Maybe for those who like a sweeter peanut sauce it'll be a good choice. I also tried the lo mein which was solid, 9.5/10 for that one. As for the service, excellent. The staff was kind and made sure that we were ok the entire time, but it wasn't overbearing in the slightest. Ambiance was nice, dark and classy.
