My husband wanted to check this place out since we had extra time on our parking. It's a very nice place with lots of items. I like their incense area, and I like that some of their items were themed, like a Big Bird and Elmo piece. They have a variety of glass, metal, and even some backpacks. The employee was knowledgeable and answered our pricing questions. You don't always find patient and knowledgeable people in customer service but here you will. In an area full of smoke shops Secrets always hits the mark. Secrets is conveniently located near Clark and Belmont so you can easily take the Redline or hop on the various buses that overlap. Secrets from the outside isn't as fancy as a lot of the newer shops. I would have missed it if I wasn't visiting with my husband. The inside of the shop is sizable and divided into different sections. When you first walk in you are met with glass pipes of different sizes and colors. This section is definitely the place to do if you are looking to upgrade one of your pipes or gift a fellow smoker a new pipe. The prices were on par for the other shops that I have visited across the area. The back of the shop has more accessories along with candles and a wide variety of incense. They had some scents that I have never come across. I love that they not only offer smoke accessories they offer things to help with the smell. The gentleman that was working that night was very helpful. He was extremely nice. We scored a discount with our purchase for being frequent buyers or maybe it was an end of year sale. Giving this rating because I went in for the first time ever and bought a product for 1.40 from a young woman who was there. the next day, I come in for the same product and there is an older man working. When I ask for the product, he asks me multiple times if I am buying anything else. I confirm that I am not (due to having a train to catch but I did not share that with him). This seemed to upset the man in some way because he charged me $5 for something that should have been $2.80ish after tax. Went in this place to by a sweet leaf grinder. The lady working the counter got all kinds of ignorant with me cause I called it a sweet leaf grinder....she says "it's not a sweat leaf grinder". It literally said it on the top of the grinder. When I pointed this out to her she got real irat an refused to sell it to me. The place is pretty good. Wide selection of pipes and bongs to choose from and pretty cheap too. I found my 'Rasta' color pipe. I hate that word. Word of advice. The colors "Red, Gold, Black, and Green' are colors of Rasta natives, but it means more than that. Red-The blood Gold-The gold that was stolen from us Black-The color of our skin Green-The land of mother Africa Sorry, but I had to put that in there. But its true origination was brought over from Africa...not during the Bob Marley years. Anywho, the associates were great with explaining different bongs and pipes. This is probably the best place to buy exotic pipes in the Chicago area. Other exotic tobacconists often make you feel like you are walking into a dirty, rank adult theater full of men in raincoats, sticky floors, and nothing else. Poorly lit, lots of dust and badly displayed merchandise. Places where you feel instantly ashamed, and worry that someone you know saw you go through the door. Places of infamy and degradation. Secrets is amazing. The prices are reasonable, the staff is nice and intelligent, and the selection is mind-blowing. The store is well-lit. They ONLY sell smoking materials, which I think is important. And remember these pipes are sold only for the purpose of smoking tobacco! read more

If you kind of just take your time and ask to see a bunch of pieces... eventually the guys and chicks that work there will give you some kind of an offer on a glass piece. I got them to throw in a nice slide and some other supplies on the cheap. Also, ask if they have any pieces they are looking to get rid of. A journey to Secrets is like visiting a museum. Some of the glass pieces that I would never consider buying are just gorgeous, so I usually spend fifteen minutes just taking in the insane spectrum of artwork they possess. I bought my first tobacco pipe here, and it has proven its $40 value. Very durable selection they have, ranging from very small to enormous and almost obnoxious. Lots of animal shaped glass pipes, which I adore but would be too nervous about breaking. I always find something new that I didn't see last time. read more

There are certainly worse headshops in this city - hell, on this street - but there are plenty of better ones too. Everything about it feels a little dated and stale. Prices on some accessories are reasonable and par for the course, but much of the glass is FAR overpriced. If you're looking for concentrate pieces, try their sister store across the street, but don't expect to find bargains there either. The guy working the counter was attentive and friendly. This place is relatively cheap compared to other places.. I wasn't sure if they had a storewide sale, but they knocked off quite a chunk of change on my purchases. The people who work here are rude and all act entitled - super condescending to customers. They act annoyed when someone has a question and basically roll their eyes when a customer walks in. They aren't helpful at all, they make you wait and wait while they finish personal phone calls or conversations about 'last night' with other employees. Besides the awful bedside manner of these people, the PRICES ARE SOOO RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE!! And given how CHEAP the PRODUCT QUALITY is, it's insane they charge so much. I bought 2 identical glass one-hitter pipes from there: the first one I took out of the bag when I got home and let it roll onto the counter: it shattered. I brought it back the next day and asked of they could replace it (it was $45!!) they said nope can't take it back it's broken I was like 'I was literally just here 12 hours ago, you sold this to me, I know you remember - it's not like I've had this for years' still they made me buy a new one. I did, and within a week same thing - completely shattered for no reason. I also bought a small grinder during this 2nd trip that they told me was 'the best of the best' - it's this small silver one and it was $50; whereas the same silver one next to it by a different brand was $35. I asked about the difference and they gave me some line about how it's higher quality blah blah - THAT is the purchase I regret the most. The thing is a piece of (sh*t). It grinds things to a powder basically so it all falls right through the pipe when you're trying to load it, not to mention it dries everything out horribly. My previous pipe before I went to this store I had for over 5 years - it had been dropped and this and that and never broke once. So for the third one I went to Smoke Shop Pipes and Stuff X in Wicker Park -- the same pipe there was $25 -- $20 less than what Secrets charges for the exact. same. thing. And the grinder? I got a larger size one, it was $30, and it is amazing. They will also give you discounts on stuff pretty much any time, the staff is super kind and genuine there - they know when to step in and ask you if you need help and when to back off and let you do your thing. So i went in there today to get my first vaporizer. staff was nice enough to explain everything to me, and i bought something from there for $110 to what i though was a good deal. then i go online literally when i get home an hour later to do research about what i bought, to make sure it was legit. turns out on the company's site its selling for $75. (http://www.vaporitevapes.com/product_solo.html) so i call secrets to tell them i'd like to at least return it to get my money back. this is how the 75 second conversation went after i explained what had happened: "well you have to understand online sales are different than instore, we have bills to pay where they don't. either way all sales are final" a $45 mark up on ONE ITEM for something you bought wholesale at an even lower price? yeah okay. my reply: "no one told me all sales were final. all i was told is that if it broke i would have to go to the manufacturer to get a replacement. i literally just bought it an hour ago and all i want is my money back. VERY loyal shopper turned jaded enough to never shop again. Purchased a bottle of butane. Started using it, it didn't work. Brought it in said hey this can of butane is defective.... P.S. spend over $100 once every month or two here...never get any deals Bc im not a haggler...everyone needs to make a little extra sometimes. The dark haired girl (whom I always find obnoxious, sometimes as she is shouting on the phone as she checks me out) tells me it's impossible a can of butane is defective (lol. Ok. It's squirting out little bits at a time and the nozzle is a little off kilter). She convinces me its my torch at home. I buy a new torch....as I leave I ask her if I get home and it's the butane, can i bring it all back? She says let me see the butane again. She squirts some in my new torch, it lights (barely, im realizing now...bc the can was defective and not filling the torch) and she says "it works, it's your torch. Well I get home and now I have 2 torches, one can of (bunk) butane and barely a flame coming out of ether torch, bc the butane isn't filling....bc the bottle Is defective.... I buy a new bottle of butane elsewhere, both torches WORK!! So I call them. Explain what happened. Tell them I feel like the sales rep handled this wrong and I almost feel suckered into spending $50 on a new torch. I had made it VERY clear to her I couldn't really afford a new torch right now (while my other one gets warranty exchanged) and specifically asked her if I could return the torch in this situation, To which she reassured me it was NOT the butane. I am told by tool bag boss dude that there's no such thing as a defective can of butane (LOL), he can't take "returns" by law (i believe this is to save a loyal customer...u can do anything...and it's technically not a return. It was a sales error) and by her just exchanging the butane as I had asked, that takes from their pay checks. LOL they prob pay $2-4 for a can of tane. So I laughed in his ear and hung up. Bc they just decreased their sales by a few hundred dollars a year by not doing the right thing. So take that paychecks! plus I was sending people there that liked my pen. I was told if i brought everything in,i could *maybe* get store credit. ha. oh yay let me just make another trip there for store credit. LOL Id rather cut your profits for the year. And I will sell my brand new torch on ebay.... Also dude was like u should have brought the torch in with the butane....I said I didn't buy the torch from u therefore I have no reason to bring it in. I brought in the can of butane that I know was defective, that I purchased from you. My original "broken" torch is not their matter. It is all just ludicrous. Over a can of butane that cost them a few bucks. I've never liked this shop, it is VERY overpriced and the staff can be pretty phony. But their stock is great and its VERY conveniently located, when I am out and about. Not when I have to make trips there to receive lousy customer service. I bought a bottom magnet and a mouth piece for a pax. They charged me $35.00 each. They are $13.00 online and the most of any other sites including the home site for my PAX is 20.00 each. I have been a loyal customer (at least 3 PAXes by referral and much more)...but I can't go there anymore after that...beware. I mentioned it and I was ignored. IMO Do not buy lighters from this place. I bought a $25+ Vector torch lighter and after refilling the lighter, it only worked half of the time. I called the store the same day and the i was told to adjust the flame which i did. I tried again and i had to flick it about 8 or 10 times before it worked. I asked if i could get a refund or exchange it for one that work and she told me she couldn't and my only option was to call Vector company and have them fix the lighter Secrets sold me,a defective lighter. This means paying for S/H and repair on top of the the price of the lighter. So keep in mind the lighters Secrets sell might not work and they will just wash their hands and you'll have to pay extra to send it to be repair, what a rip off. Also there was a guy sitting on the floor and one guy high as hell who "stand" by the door. I came there to spend money not to steal. It made me felt not welcomed. My 7-11 lighter works every single time vs Secret's Vector lighter. I will never return and will let my friends know. read more

Bongs, water pipes, bubblers, spoons, bowls, pipes, chillums, vaporizers, double bubblers, ash catchers, diffusers, percolators, Ionizing spray, hemp wick, papers, lighters, FREE LIGHTERS!, and just about anything else you could possibly want or need! Secrets is one of my all time favorite head shops, I've been to all the main ones in Chicago (all the ones all Clark) and a handful of the smaller smoking shops scattered around the city. Also, I grew up in CT and have been to quite a few head shops on the east coast and I still maintain that Secrets might be my number 1. Not only do they get props for their selection but also the staff is truly well informed and seems to care (at least a little bit). I really like that one old guy (don't know his name, sorry) who is almost always there. He knows his shit. Now that I've truly put Secrets on a big ol' pedestal I'm gonna have to take them down a bit. Two things, price and the non haggling policy. Let's start with the price, now before I say that Secrets is the only really expensive Head Shop around, I do have to say that coming from the east coast I know that all Chicago head shops are relatively overpriced. But let me bring up my second point of no price haggling which will enforce my point that Secrets is overpriced. Secrets has a policy that everything except for a few of their top shelf bongs (the illadelphs and possibly a few others) have an automatic %20 discount. Now to the untrained and inexperienced head shop attendee this seems like a great thing, "Oh wow! A 20% discount! Woohoo!" However, this allows them to also have a no haggling policy. Which frankly, if I can speak on behalf of some of us who frequent head shops, really sucks! For example, I once went into Novelties and Stuff (on Clark) and talked the guy down to $250 on a bong that was listed at $750. Having said that, I still think that Secrets provides the best quality and service in town. A good head shop for the experienced smoker and a great head shop for the novice (because of the impeccable service, and they won't pressure you into buying like some of the other head shops on Clark.) I was there on a sunday. I gave this place 2 stars only because of their collection of glass. Racial discrimination at its best. I walk in with a friend of mine looking for some glass to add to my collection. We were the only ones in the store and the girl who was behind the counter showed no interest of giving us service. she answer questions with just "yes" "no". She did not explain how the piece works nor did she give us advice on what would be best. She just didn't want to be there The reason I went back to secrets is because you can haggle the price. There was no haggling here. I asked for $5 less. It's not like I wanted the goddamn thing for free. She would not budge a dollar. Secrets might have good, name brand glass, but lets face it people, there are plenty of glassblowers in the world. And I would try Novelties and Stuff right across the street. They actually haggle with prices and give great customer service no matter what color or ethnicity you are. Secret is Very unprofessional, very disappointing, and very discriminating. Most disappointing part is right when I was about to leave, a Caucasian walks in with his friends. The girl at the counter was happy as can be. This place was a little overwhelming to me, and I am a seasoned smoker. Very clean store, gorgeous pieces, massive inventory. The guy behind the counter I dealt with mostly wasn't too friendly, but he wasn't a jerk either. The other older guy was very nice, but he was busy helping other customers. I got a great GonG ashcatcher with black and white solid color reversal work that was (If I recall correctly) blown by Chris Carlson for $60, which I think is a solid deal. As far as the bad reviews go, every smoke shop in America has an "all sales final" policy, and "real" K2 is an imitation product to begin with lol. read more
