I always come here just for the Korean food, and my favorite is the Dolsot Bibimbap, a scorching hot pot that comes with rice, several types of veg, egg and protein (traditionally beef) neatly arranged. It comes to your table sizzling, then you dress it with as much gochujang pepper/sesame oil sauce as you like (it traditionally comes with a bottle of sauce so you can add to yoir taste), and mix it all up. The hot pot makes the bottom of the rice nice and crispy. I get mine with tofu instead of beef and the portion is very generous. It comes with 3 banchan (Korean small side dishes) and miso soup. My only wish/suggestion for improvement is that they should offer more variety in their banchan. Service is fast but I'm usually here outside peak hours. Ambiance is simple but always clean. My dinner bill with a beer and a hot tea came to $26 which is a good value imo (my leftover filled a to-go container). read more

We like to go to Secret Garden on the days & times they have their half price sushi specials. They are usually very good. The ambience is nice but if that's why you are going out you should let your hostess know you'd like to sit somewhere away from the door if a table is available. The best meals come from their Korean Menu hands down. You can almost never go wrong, for those feeling unsure on what to order, the jap chae, bibimbop or kimchi with pork is a great order. This past visit my party ordered a korean casserole..and we were not disappointed! For a great price this feeds up to 4 people and that was no exaggeration. I will start this as I always do by saying that I do not give out 5 stars unless I am really blow away. This is called the Secret Garden for a reason. It is definitely a secret as I have not been here before. It was worth it. Probably one of the best sushi places in the Syracuse area. The decor is that of a nice hidden gem of sushi restaurant. The service was good as they were pretty busy. The most important thing is the food was spot on. The lunch menu was great and had a lot of options. I want to come back and try some other items on it. Awesome spot that I can't believe I hadn't been to before. The staff is friendly and the restaurant is clean with a nice ambiance. They offer half-priced sushi on Monday and Wednesday and what I had was pretty good! I had the Unagi and Rainbow rolls. Both weren't the biggest, but tasted fresh and were perfect for half price. The wasabi was good as well. I also had to hot stone bibimbap and that was absolutely delicious. I love how the stone makes the rice nice and crispy. The sauce is provided on the side which is great for people who have a low spice tolerance, but I didn't think the sauce was all that spicy. It also came with miso soup, two kinds of kimchi, and pickled daikon- great stuff. For the bibimbap and two half-priced rolls my total came to 28 dollars. An absolute steal. The Secret Garden This is definitely a hole in the wall, dark 90s wood and an intimate feel with but good vibes. Upon entering you wait to be seated, and while there you can buy a bottle of wine at the door for $20 (at the time of my visit) to bring to your table. On the half price days they have special menus at all the tables which is pre-marked with all the prices. The regular weeknight menu is also at the table for those who want to browse. Things such as dumplings or edamame are pre-dropped off at the table but the sushi order comes all at once for the diners for everyone to share. Everyone in my party liked their food. I thought the sweet potato roll I ordered was especially tasty and crunchy. The service was good about keeping our waters filled without intruding on conversation. When I dropped a chopstick the staff was readily there with a replacement pair. There was a broad range of people at the restaurant for half price night, a steady turn of folks out on a date or family and friends catching up. Watching those around me was as much a feast as the food. For car parking it's a private lot, though shared with several other businesses so it can get full. Good sushi! I went with a group of 5 on Monday evening for half priced sushi. They have half priced sushi on Mondays and Wednesdays. We waited about 15 minutes to be seated, there were about 2 groups ahead of us. Good selections to choose from! I got steamed veggie dumplings, seaweed salad, Syracuse roll, Venus roll, and Amsterdam roll. The service was quick to bring out the dumplings and seaweed salad. Average time to bring out the sushi, so not waiting too long, but definitely took care of their craft. The two servers were efficient and friendly and very helpful. It wasn't terribly busy when I was there so I was able to ask some questions and chat a bit. I was curious about Soju, a very popular drink in Korea...I found out it is like sake but pretty strong so I'll need a designated driver when I try it! I ordered seaweed salad, shumai shrimp dumplings, salmon roll and Firecracker roll off the half price menu and Tteokbokki from the regular menu. Everything was so fresh, the dishes came out quickly as soon as they were ready. There is a great business model (cooler of bottles of wine at the front and you can grab whichever you want and bring it to your table for $15). We were started with some banchan which included daikon, kimchi, cucumber. We tried the Haemul Jeongol and a salmon roll. The salmon roll was pretty mediocre and I probably wouldn't come back for that. But the seafood jeongol - amazing! Overflowing with flavorful tasty items. The seafood included clams, a small blue crab, shrimp, fish. I'm just blown away by the flavor of the broth though. In the past, the jeongul broth would never be as good as soondobu, but I could drink all of this! Plenty of food for up to four people (we split it between two and had a lot of leftovers). This one is probably closer to 3.5 stars. I hemmed and hawed a bit when deciding how many stars to give this review. If I was basing it on the suhi alone, it wouldn't be four stars. I ordered on half price sushi day, but even given the discount, I don't think the sushi was the best value. Honestly, Syracuse has better decently priced options these days. The sushi wasn't terrible, but it wasn't necessarily something I'd make the trip for alone. Secret Garden has 1/2 priced sushi twice a week, Mondays and Wednesdays. I thought that maybe the discount would be dine-in only, even with COVID, or only for dinner, but was pleasantly surprised to find out it's all day, takeout available (at least for right now.) However, only some of the rolls are half price, and there's no real way to tell based on the online menu. The waitress who took my order over the phone was very patient and helpful, and suggested some rolls to me based on the first one or two I'd asked about. When I arrived and picked up my order, the staff was also quick and polite. I got the valentine roll (shrimp & cream cheese) and the spicy tuna. The sushi was on the bland side. Tuna was mushy. A little heavy on the rice, and the roll wasn't the most structurally sound. Like, think sushi at a mid-range buffet. Not the most horrible thing in the world, but not a dish I'd get excited about. I was drawn in by the sushi deals, but think I might have made a wrong move by not trying the Korean dishes. The pictures look delicious. Mmmm really hit the spot. We ordered a Yukgyejang and Kkanpoongi for takeout, and it was SOOOOO worth it! Since we had to wait a couple hours until we could actually eat it, we asked for the Kkkanpoongi to be made with sauce on the side. The Yukgyejang here is Korean-spicy with lots of vegetables and just the right amount of meat. The sweet and sour pork was delicious and I love that they added mushrooms to it since that's not commonly done for this dish. It balanced with the sweetness of the sauce. The Soon tofu jji gae had lots of flavor to it but was hoping they would add a little more clams as they only gave one. They gave large portions which was proportionate to the amount we paid for the dishes. They gave rice for each of our dishes and 3 side dishes. Secret Garden is not what it used to be. Growing up in Syracuse I'd frequent this place so much. Since moving back to Syracuse everything has changed. Tonight the kimchi tasted too sweet and was also very diluted. It was disappointing. I ordered my favorite dish of bibimbap in a hot stone bowl. I was disappointed that bulgogi is no longer mixed in--I received what looked like and tasted like unseasoned ground beef. They put a fully cooked egg on top--I'm used to almost all Korean restaurants where the yolk is still liquify and you mix it all up in the bowl while it "cooks". I poured a ton of sauce in my bowl but it still was very bland and the veggies were frail and overcooked. Im really disappointed at how this place has gone downhill. I deliberated over sushi or Korean, but there didn't seem to be many photos of sushi or it didn't look that great, so we both ordered from the Korean menu. We had a hot bibimbap and yukgyejang, both were decent. Bibimbap came in a stone dish, with crispy rice at the bottom and a nice accoutrement of chopped veggies, but the protein did not have much flavor. Yukgyejang was a medium spicy, and a ton of bean sprouts. Not a lot of shredded beef, but I wasn't surprised about that. Plenty of parking in the lot and we were seated quickly during dinner.
