Dandy told us she opened the shop back in 1998 right after graduating from UC Berkeley, and she's kept it going ever since. In today's world, when so many people just buy straight from brands online, it's amazing to see a brick-and-mortar shop like this still thriving. It's not easy, but it's clear how much she cares about her community and her customers. The shop itself is fantastic--great selection of shoes, clothes, hats, skateboard decks, trucks, and more. He was incredibly friendly, attentive, and took the time to help my daughter design the perfect skateboard. They had so many awesome deck designs to choose from, a great selection of wheels, and tons of fun stickers that made the whole experience even more exciting for her. While we were waiting for everything to be put together, I believe the manager came out and was just as friendly. He welcomed us and made us feel right at home, which really added to the overall experience. One thing that really stood out to me was a sign about rewarding kids for getting good grades. I thought it was such a cool idea that they encourage kids by letting them earn free skateboard parts and other goodies. I love seeing businesses invest in their community like that. The pricing for new vinyl is pretty consistent with what you see or find at similar independent record stores. I really like the vibe and layout of this store. It's so large that you have separate rooms for primarily their used stuff and a separate area that looks like a hang out area. There's even a room towards the back where I think they have live shows. During out visit, it was used to hold the records that came in for Black Friday or Record Store Day 2025. Came here with some family to do some holiday shopping and just generally looking for stuff. There was a coffee cart there serving up free beverages, which was a nice touch. I ended up getting a couple of records I've been looking for awhile and being able to buy a couple records my nephew wanted for Christmas. Tom is the nicest guy and his passion for skateboarding makes buying a skateboard a fun experience. My son and I learned so much from our visit. I knew very little about skateboards before we went and as we left, I felt like I had a custom introduction to skateboards lesson - what great service! Tom gave us details on all the options so we really felt like we made educated choices. After we picked out all the parts, he showed my son how to assemble it. Learning by doing - my son loved learning how to build his board. I felt the value for the price was very reasonable, especially since it was a white-glove service! I wasn't sure I'd made it to the right place since it looks like a residential house from the street, but I'm so glad we knocked on the door! Tom was GREAT. He's super knowledgeable and super supportive. I never felt like I was being upsold on any of the items. He was really invested in finding the right board for my kid and my budget. As a parent who doesn't know much about skateboarding, I was really emphasizing my son ignoring how the board looked, and instead focusing on how it felt. Tom really quietly took me aside and helped me understand that it was also important for my son to have a board that he likes the look of so he's confident on it at the skate parks. I really appreciated Tom doing this. He was super respectful AND made sure I had good information to help my kid. That's a hard balance to strike, and he did it perfectly. After building the board, Tom offered to teach my son the basics, and even invited him to come back that evening when some pro skateboarders would be coming by. Everyone was super chill and supportive. My kid learned how to get in and out of the bowl by himself, basic skate etiquette, and that evening really created an incredibly positive first experience with skateboarding that will last him a long time. Tom's whole demeanor is that of a long time teacher / mentor. He's easy to talk to (found out he took college level music classes from my mom back in the day!), he knows his stuff, and he's invested in the community.
