We had such a great experience at 510 Skateboarding. I brought my kids in to get helmets and pads, and the owner, Dandy, helped us personally. She was incredibly patient making sure their helmets fit just right, and even gave them free stickers--which completely made their day. Dandy told us she opened the shop back in 1998 right after graduating from UC Berkeley, and she's kept it going ever since. In today's world, when so many people just buy straight from brands online, it's amazing to see a brick-and-mortar shop like this still thriving. It's not easy, but it's clear how much she cares about her community and her customers. The shop itself is fantastic--great selection of shoes, clothes, hats, skateboard decks, trucks, and more. The vibe is super friendly and laid-back, and you can tell it's a real community hub. Honestly, 510 is a total asset to the Bay Area. We'll definitely be back. read more

I struck out on the SNKRS app this morning for the Nike SB Dunk Low "Matcha" and decided to brave the line to try to get a pair at 10:00 AM. The release at 510 was FCFS and had a claim ticket process which helped people know if their size was still available or not. At most other skate shops in the Bay Area, there is either a raffle process or website only release (in which you stand no chance against the bots). Overall the process was very efficient and I was able to get my size. Thank you 510! read more

Put my son into a skateboarding class and was told the Magneto board I bought on Amazon was not up to snuff. The coach recommended us to visit 510 Skateboarding and off we go to pick up some quality stuff (and to redeem my ego). I've been in skate shops before where the workers are very pretentious...and that is really off putting. Upon walking into 510, Hue greeted my entire family (brought the wife and 2 kids) as I let him know that I needed two new boards for the little ones. He quickly finished up what he was doing and tended to us. What was great? Hue was incredibly knowledgable, warm, and welcoming. He talked with my kids and gave them stickers. There was zero pressure on getting the best of the best. He recommended us the size and walked us through all the accessories needed so that my two kids would be riding a board that would last them years. Putting everything together for 2 boards took about 15 minutes and Hue actually provided explanations for every step that he did for me. I'm a DIY guy myself and this was invaluable! My 7 year-old has been wanting a skateboard for over a year now. We did some research and found this place. So for her 7th birthday we took her to realize her dream. It could NOT have been better. The two lovely people at the counter (I forgot to get names I'm so sorry) were incredibly kind and patient with my shy kiddo. They showed her deck after deck with not even a hint of irritation. They let her count out her money, and the lovely woman even encouraged her with tips and stories and telling us about skate like a girl. They let her watch the entire process of making the board. This is a great small business near the UC Berkeley campus! It is a wonderful mixture of skateboarding as well as good streetwear fashion. The clothing is comfortable, loose, and allows mobility for those who use it for skating or simply a nice and trendy streetwear fit. They also have a great selection on skate shoes that are also very fashionable depending on your use. They also sell their own branded clothing that resembles a classic 1990's baggy skater look. Awesome shop! I used to come here quite a bit back in the day, but it had been probably 5-10 years (pun intended) since I last visited. What brought me back was that I won a raffle for some sneakers, which was pretty cool! I came in during one of the assigned days to pick up the shoes, and it was super easy and smooth. I just had to show ID, and was probably in and out in 5 minutes or so. As far as the shop goes, they were practicing social distancing as expected and mandated. Aside from skate shoes, they have a huge wall with skateboard decks, and sell skateboard hardware and components as well. There's also a nice selection of skateboard apparel. I'll definitely be back again, and hopefully will win some more kicks! read more

Wow! Such a pleasant experience. We showed up here after my daughter started skate camp at Cal and was told she had the wrong type of board.. my bad! LOL We went here to get her geared up and, knowing nothing about skateboards, I was feeling a bit intimidated. The guys here knew exactly what my daughter needed, she picked out her deck, wheels & trucks (don't be knowing the lingo mom!! ) and they had us on our way $50 cheaper than what they originally estimated! Nice! The guys were helpful, knowledgeable, friendly and easy to work with. They made the entire experience easy & fun for my daughter. Thanks for the stellar service 510Skate! Five stars for service. I came in to get a recommendation on wheels for my daughter's board. We had replaced them with easier wheels to learn on when when we got her the board a couple years ago, but now she's ready for different ones. I had the original wheels with me and asked the guys at the counter if they would suffice. They said yes and said they'd replace within 10 min. 10 min later, I returned, and they handed me the board and the now-extra wheels. I asked how much, and they said nothing(!) So they had two opportunities to charge me: could have recommended other wheels (I don't know anything about skateboarding so I probably would have bought their suggestion) and could have charged me for the labor. And they did neither. While I spent no money in the shop today, I'll be happy to return for any future skateboarding need. read more

Went there for 6 years for every board and didn't get one smile from them. I felt like I was in their way, or I wasn't important every time I walked in there. They could care less about you as a customer. Don't shop here cause they don't appreciate your business. Definitely not mine or my other Black friend. Support Local. Hang on for the long haul, this might be lengthy. My 5-year-old daughter just started watching Back To The Future, the skateboarding scenes caught her eye. She then found my old busted skateboard in storage and started riding it, rusted bearings and trucks, cracked board and all. I told her I'd buy her a new one. I remember we all used to go to 510 to buy SBs and get our board parts. So as a graduation gift (from preschool) i decided to take her here to pick one out. (we are also moving to Texas in a few weeks and I didn't know of many spots she can buy one in Texas, so what better place than here) Plus this could be a little piece of home with her. Anyway, i surprised her and took her to the store and she was super excited to pick out a deck. She chose a 510Skateboarding design which said Oakland on the bottom, perfect choice. The staff was very friendly and the store very clean. They answered all our questions and even put the deck together for us. Process was very quick and painless. My daughter skates everyday, very fearless. This by the way was her very first board. Thanks again 510! read more

510 is a shop for anyone. There's no attitude here, just stoked people who seem as welcoming and helpful to total beginners as they are to people who have made skateboarding an important part of who they are. I don't skate, but my teenage daughter is starting. I used to spend a lot of time in local surf, windsurf, and bike shops, and I have seen shops that are intimidating for beginners. But I know nothing about skateboarding. My daughter initially just wanted to get her board online, and I was trying to explain to her why it is such a huge benefit to have people who are in your sport get you set up in a local shop and why you have to support them. I was hoping that 510 was that kind of shop and it totally is. As soon as I told the owner Dandy, and other guys in the store (Saylor and others) that we were were effectively clueless, they immediately went into a super helpful start-from-the-beginning mode. They recommended the correct board, trucks, wheels, and backup wheels for other conditions when I asked, and told us where they thought we could save money and where we should not skimp. It was exactly what we needed -- and exactly what we would have gotten wrong buying online. My daughter is psyched about her new board, which she rides daily and will also ride in a Skate Like A Girl virtual camp this summer. She now tells me why it is important to support local shops and how cool and friendly the shop was. ;-) read more

I know some attitude in skateboarding is cool, but the guy who was working here on a Saturday morning was a jerk. Came in with my son to look at wheels. Almost every question about wheels was met with a look like 'why are you bothering me by asking me such dumb questions'. Aside from the anti attitude. My son tells me that the skateboard and clothing offerings used to be located within separate shops. His Mom previously bought him a skateboard here. Since we were in the neighbourhood yesterday, the Kid brought me in to with the idea of getting another set of wheels and a wrench. It was certainly an education, as I learned quickly that skateboards were not always an off-the-shelf item. And my son certainly knew the language. The shoe and clothing selection was pretty cool too, and with a decent sales rack. This Hipster Dad even found something. However, I promised to let Gayle dress me for the next round, so my "quirky" fashion tastes will have to wait for a short while. read more

They've got a pretty decent selection of shoes and clothing. However, they seem to offer alot more for men in the latter. The staff is laid back, prices are moderate. Space is tight, but it's not crowded, even on weekends. I've been going here for 4 years and I like how the store still has it's roots and has a very organic kinda feel. This is the store to go to if you're in Oakland/Berkeley. It's a boutique-styled shop with a huge selection of boards, and they separated the wall between popsicle and shaped. Adding on to that, the store is well-maintained and organized neatly. The staff is friendly and there's always a skate video playing on the TV. In addition to the plentiful stock of DLX product, they carry equal amounts of brands that tend to sell out fast in other shops: Theories, 917, FA/Hockey, Quartersnacks, Dime. They were the only store in a 10-mile radius with Bones Swiss, when I needed new bearings. read more

We paid the 510 crew a visit to buy our skateboarding 7 year old wildchild her first deck and they were great! The whole staff helped her find the perfect size deck with graphics she loved, wheels, trucks, grip tape, plus they shared their knowledge, were all very encouraging, and hooked up our daughter with a ton of free stickers. Our daughter is as stoked on her board as we were supporting this awesome local business. Look, I found them extremely helpful to pick out boards for beginners, as well as getting helmets when they did Cal Skate camp. They were perfectly friendly - but in my 6 or so trips here, I have seen a grumpy guy a couple of times. He wasn't doing customer service at the time - probably a good thing - so didn't effect me at all...and he was just pretty distracted and grunting answers at the young'uns asking him questions. All in all, I like the place. When the kids go deeper and have to get boards/wheels/whatjamajiggers serviced, we'll see how it all holds up. read more

The staff were super helpful and were equallly as good at explaining things to ne in a way thstbI could understand so that I could make the right decision. They put the skateboard together for me. This happened more than a month ago and I am still sore about the experience. I took my son to get his first new skateboard here, what a disappointment. The young man was NOT knowledgeable, neither was the dude at cash register; I asked them about ratings for ball bearings (ABEC) they told me there was no such thing just the more expensive the better. When I found the rating on the store printed label (it was less than ABEC 5) they said nobody's using it. Other questions I had were also answered in a similar fashion. Granted, I am over 50 and don't look, talk and think like them, so a waste of time for them, right? I dropped $170 and walked out with my happy son and shiny new skateboard, which they put together in 10 minutes or less. Nevertheless, I am NOT EVER going back, nor recommending the store. These days you can get everything on-line, sans the attitude and poor service. read more

I'm sorry to give this shop a bad review, Because I'm all about supporting the real skate shops, I was here to buy skate shoes at full price, not from the sales rack!!!!! I found the shoes I wanted at the mall's skate shops but, I wanted to support VI0skates I asked about my size it wasn't available ok cool, at this point I just need some shoes to skate so.I said what do you have in my size? He pointed at a couple shoes, so I said OK do you have anything else? His answer was. "I can't remember all of them and plus I'm busy right now" I just said thanks and walked out. They are on a busy street in Berkeley but on a Wednesday at 5 I was able to find parking (meter) across the street. I called ahead of time to see if they had the brand/size that I needed in skateboard elbow pads (187), and they did. The shop is fairly small so they keep the pads in the back -- you need to ask. I also tried to get knee pads but the size was off (obv not their fault). They didn't try to upsell me and price on the elbow pads was similar to online -- and as I always say - I'm way happier supporting a local business. The guys at the shop were nice and helpful and I didn't feel like an idiot even though I'm a new skateboarder. But it's hard to make me feel like an idiot anyway. I'm rad. read more
