I went to Weirdo with my almost 8 year old son to buy him a skateboard for his birthday (he'd been asking for a year plus). I wasn't sure I'd made it to the right place since it looks like a residential house from the street, but I'm so glad we knocked on the door! Tom was GREAT. He's super knowledgeable and super supportive. I never felt like I was being upsold on any of the items. He was really invested in finding the right board for my kid and my budget. As a parent who doesn't know much about skateboarding, I was really emphasizing my son ignoring how the board looked, and instead focusing on how it felt. Tom really quietly took me aside and helped me understand that it was also important for my son to have a board that he likes the look of so he's confident on it at the skate parks. I really appreciated Tom doing this. He was super respectful AND made sure I had good information to help my kid. That's a hard balance to strike, and he did it perfectly. After building the board, Tom offered to teach my son the basics, and even invited him to come back that evening when some pro skateboarders would be coming by. Everyone was super chill and supportive. My kid learned how to get in and out of the bowl by himself, basic skate etiquette, and that evening really created an incredibly positive first experience with skateboarding that will last him a long time. Tom's whole demeanor is that of a long time teacher / mentor. He's easy to talk to (found out he took college level music classes from my mom back in the day!), he knows his stuff, and he's invested in the community. This is such an awesome place! Local spot for quality skateboards and excellent and personable service! Tom is the nicest guy and his passion for skateboarding makes buying a skateboard a fun experience. My son and I learned so much from our visit. I knew very little about skateboards before we went and as we left, I felt like I had a custom introduction to skateboards lesson - what great service! Tom gave us details on all the options so we really felt like we made educated choices. After we picked out all the parts, he showed my son how to assemble it. Learning by doing - my son loved learning how to build his board. I felt the value for the price was very reasonable, especially since it was a white-glove service! First off, I've never been to this place. And my intention when calling this establishment was to find out if there were places near Castro Valley for my son and I to skate. What I thought was going to be a minute or two conversation, turned into one of the most enjoyable conversations I've had all week. It lasted 28+ minutes and I feel like I was talking to a long lost friend by the end of it. As one of the other reviews said, Tom is a life long skateboarder, he is, the reason I know this is we were talking about how we use to take metal roller skates and attach them to 2x4's and make skateboards out of them. Oh the good ole days. Not really. We both agreed we almost killed ourselves quite a few times. Really looking forward to meeting him and seeing his shop in person. read more

I know nothing about skateboarding, but I got one for free and wanted a second opinion on it, so I took it to this guy and he was super helpful. He explained how skateboards work and suggested that I try out my board for a month and if I want to continue skateboarding actually that, to invest in a component-driven skateboard (not entirely sure that's the term he used, but basically, a customized board). But I was really impressed that he took the time to explain the basics of skateboard engineering and that he advised me to wait on building/buying a new board. No, it's not your typical 9-6 big box store with multiple employees, a cash register, and a parking lot -- it's someone's home, get over it. His honesty, friendliness, and expertise makes this place a 10/10 in my book read more

This place is kind of weird, they made me sit outside while they got their act together (I got there about 30 min after they were supposed to open. Finally he comes out and asks me what I want, I tell him I want to buy a skateboard and he looked at me like I was an alien. Weird right? Cool looking little showroom - but 100% street boards - no longboards. I would def give this place a chance if I were looking for different decks. read more

This is the right place to go if you want a real skateboard custom-built to your needs. This is not a regular retail store where you get helped by clerks who just happen to work there. The owner is an avid life-long skateboarder and a skateboarding enthusiast. In fact he has a skateboarding bowl right in the back of the shop. He helps you select the parts, assembles your skateboard right in front of you, and teaches you how to maintain and ride it. There is likely no better or more unique place to go for a skateboard in at least all of Northern California. The shop is called Weirdo because as people get proficient in skateboarding, they start doing weirder and weirder setups of their boards. The shop is also in a "weird" location, so as you're driving there don't think you are getting lost, you're coming the right way. I was (and still am) amazed by Tom's knowledge of and passion for skateboarding. He let me take my time putting together my skateboard and taught me how to maintain it too. He was also kind enough to give me a free skateboard lesson to get back into feeling comfortable on a board again which was incredibly informative and fun. Went over to purchase some skateboard stuff for my sister's boyfriends kid. Really nice selection of all different kinds of stuff. The owner seemed extremely knowledgeable. Didn't try to oversell me and took his time explaining the different type of board setups. Great variety of some really cool, trippy decks. I think I ended up with some great priced gear. I was hesitant to come here with my boys even though I was told this was the place to go from several people. I can't tell you much about skateboarding expect my boys love it & were getting into it so I wasn't sure what to ask/do once I got there. Tom took care of everything. I was blown away at the amount of time he spent with my boys & the patience he had with them. The hands experience & allowing my boys to get involved with making the board was priceless.
