My wife had noticed the Sailor's Delight shop earlier in the morning, so we decided to stop in. It was really, really good. My family lived in Wisconsin for more than 20 years, most of them in the Madison area. During that time we got to really love a local favorite ice cream brand: Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream. It's definitely a premium brand and thought it was local to the Midwest only. Well...once we entered Sailor's Delight, signs proudly proclaimed that they served Chocolate Shoppe, shipped directly from the plant in Madison. This made my wife immediately look for her favorite flavor: Zanzibar. It's a chocolate ice cream, blending 3 types of cocoa, to produce a very rich but bingeable ice cream. One scoop was priced at $7.50 in a cup, with each additional scoop being $2.25. So I added one of my favorite flavors, mint chocolate chip, to pay for a two scooper. And in Wisconsin tradition, one scoop really means two...our attendant took a regular size ice cream scoop and plunged it in each container to grab two scoops of each. We ate it outside. The ice cream was as good as I remember, and alternating between mint chocolate chip and the Zanzibar was marvelous. We sat down on the edge of the fountain right outside, doing a little people watching while enjoying the weather. It makes me smile thinking about it. I was curious if there were other places around where we live that serves Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream, and OMG Burgers and More seems to do so. Guess where I am going, the next chance I get...

The gelato was oddly gluey and paste-like, the pistachio raspberry tasted artificial, and the milkshake was surprisingly watery. Line moved fast despite the crowd, and the shop is bright, clean, and minimalist. At first it feels trendy and modern. After tasting everything, the minimalism started to feel a little more... literal. Cute beach-stop concept. Just wish the desserts delivered.

Once you walk in, you're greeted by a black and white checkerboard floor! When you look up, there are colorful parachutes hanging from the ceiling! It wasn't busy as it was during the week, and we found a table on the patio. Mr. B ordered a flight to try and we ordered a pineapple jalapeno pizza. I know many say pineapple doesn't belong on a pizza, but we happen to like it. The crust of the pizza was thin and covered in melted cheese, chunks of pineapple and slices of jalapeno. It was the perfect amount of spice and the pineapple calmed it down by adding a hint of sweetness. The beer was great, the pizza even better and you just can't beat the views of the bay. Service was good, and we were off to a good start of eating on Catalina Island.

But if you're hungry and looking for really good food, I personally wouldn't recommend it. That being said, our server was very nice and attentive. Once we were finally seated, another 15 minutes passed without a server acknowledging us. We asked a busser for water, and he said he would get our waiter. We watched him speak to a male waiter, who looked directly at our table but returned to chatting with the bartender. Four other nearby tables that had been seated after us were also left without service. When the waiter eventually headed in our direction, he walked past all of the waiting tables and stopped to talk with guests who had already been served. After sitting for 35 minutes without even receiving water or being greeted by a server, we left. The couple at the table next to us left as well. It truly felt as though the waiting tables were being deliberately ignored. There are many wonderful places to eat on Catalina Island, but based on this experience, I would avoid Topside.
