It's mostly a take out place although they do have about 6 tables if you prefer to eat in (there's no such thing as ambiance here unless you're in the mood for the neighborhood mom and pop diner feeling). The good thing is, it's pretty obvious these locals keep on coming back and that's because the food is real good and fresh as well as very fairly priced. A small fish and chips cost just under 7 pounds and was more than big enough sized for lunch. This is pretty much a fish and chips spot, although they will grill your fish for you as well, and I must say, this is the BEST fish and chips I've had in London to-date. Granted everyone has their own tastes and that "best" moniker is used everywhere but let me tell you, it was cooked just right, nice crunchy batter with nice and tender haddock tucked inside (you can choose from about 5 fish choices for them to fry up for you). I will definitely be going back here there's no doubt, it's in a random location but if you are in Balham and craving some fish and chips, this is a great spot to hit up!

I thought it was a bit pricey for fish and chips until got home and saw the size of the portions HUGE! It could have easily fed 2 people who hadn't eaten for a while!! The staff was super accommodating. They are clear on the wait times. They make every effort to seat customers in every nook and cranny space of this specific location. We were given a bar top seat that squeezed about 6 people in a line. Food arrived quickly. Since I am the only fish lover in our family, I indulged in the famous fish and chips. I opted for the cod even though haddock was the fish of the day. It was super crunchy and light. I inhaled the whole fish. I'm not a fan of "chips" aka fat fries here. Hubby ordered lots of side dishes: the sourdough bread, thin chippies and more "chips". He also enjoyed the prawns. All delicious. Try to make a reservation or go when it's not prime meal times. The food is delicious.

Today we tried Crown Fish &…read moreChip Bar located right at then end of a road with great storefront visibility for awareness. I had the Cod & Chips while my wife had the Haddock & Chips. We both had the large orders. We had a nice waitress and she informed us they cook the food fresh so it would be about 10 or so minutes for the food to be cooked. We are perfectly fine with that if it means freshly cooked food! When the food arrived, the fish was super crisp and yummy and very hot (temperature) so be careful! It is served with a lemon wedge and a very small pack of Tartare Sauce. On the table is a vinegar container as well. Although that vinegar tasted weak or maybe it was just plain white vinegar. I do prefer the dark malt vinegar. Crown Fish & Chip Bar also serve up Gyros (Doner) and other fried foods. They have plenty of sides such as salad, mushy peas, etc. to add on to your meal. The real star here seem to be the fish n chips and they do it well. Thanks Crown Fish & Chip Bar for a pleasant lunch!

Watching her serve other tables, she gave most patrons drinks after their food was served. The cod was really good and meaty. The onion rings were amazing. The fries/chips were only okay. There was no salt on them and they weren't crispy at all. We got a tiny container of tartar sauce. It was hard to get her attention, so I finished the last half without anything. I don't know if the quality of fish and chips is typical for London, but I'm not that impressed. A small town on the Oregon coast had the best fish and chips ever. I will say, the onion rings were the best even though they were a little greasy. The coleslaw is not like USA slaw, but it was pretty good. I will probably try another restaurant for fish and chips to get a good comparison.
