To sum up why I rated John and Jacob as outstanding is: 1. Response time in responding to my request for bid and presenting me with a thorough line per line estimate with no padding or unnecessary costs associated with their labor. I had another company bid which was so obvious they were trying to inflate their costs, that even being an novice it was evident. John did my entire kitchen for what the other bidder only would being doing half my kitchen at double the price. 2. All the positive reviews John had plus the years he had in business was a big factor. They lived up to their positive reviews and then some. 3. It is quite obvious from the start that John and Jacob know their stuff. I started out with questions that were easily answered and solved. 4. Johns relationship to the tile provider is outstanding which makes it smooth and streamline making sure you have the right product and amount for the job. 5. Jacob did the install: he showed up everyday on time, protected my floors and surrounding areas, cleaned up before he left each day. Job only took 3 days to complete. 6. Jacob's installation of glass tiles around my curved glass vent cover was amazing. I kept wondering how he would do it and if he could. I was blown away see his finished work. 7. We had what I would call a "problem shower", the last install wasn't the best, there was water/wood damage, and the shower was in need of more structural support. My husband and I remodeled our master and hallway bathrooms. After researching several companies, we decided to hire Jacob Varela from Custom Tile. He did an impressive job at a reasonable rate, and kept us informed on any schedule updates. In our extensive experience with contractors, that's not too common. His work area was always kept tidy at the end of the day which we really appreciated. Both bathrooms were completely gutted including the tub and showers. We had a large new construction window installed in our hallway tub/shower. Jacob did all of our tile work except for the hall bath flooring. He worked with us to create a custom shower bench in the master and the niches I wanted, including putting a niche in the hall bath where the medicine cabinet used to be. He also installed all the fixtures and safety bars. Jacob shared numerous ideas that enhanced and showcased his tile work, like using white tiles as shelves in our hall bath niches, and finishing the borders with the narrow white trim. It's bright, beautiful, and so modern! I'm also impressed with the detailed skinny vertical tile he installed to border the front edges of both showers, and the wrap around border into the window area by the master shower. We love our new bathrooms! I especially love my wavy turquoise shower tile and niches! Our hallway bathroom was designed from a dream I had. Jacob helped make it a reality! In hindsight, I'd make the 2 following changes. The first is I would mount the curved shower rod in the master bath about 3 inches closer to the edge of the shower so the curtain would hang straight down when pulled to one side. The second change would be installing a tall vertical niche in the master bath on the opposite end of the shower from the water source, like the one in the hall bath pictures. The horizontal niche is beautiful but tends to gather a little water on one side while showering. We just need to wipe it down after showers. It was our choice to design it that way, not Jacob's. He did exactly what we requested. Well done Jacob! We highly recommend Jacob Varela from Custom Tile for any tile work you may be considering. I'm trying to include pictures of his detailed work. This is the first remodel we have done to the house and it was an absolutely painless experience. We had heard horror stories from our neighbors from the contractors they used for their jobs. On days work was going to need to start earlier or later, he let us know. He always communicated when he was leaving or when he would be adjusting the work days. Jacob finished on time and kept to his timeline that he initially gave us. Nothing was a surprise. I will say that when we had small details we were nit-picky about, Jacob quickly addressed them and changed it to our preference. What I really appreciated was how clean the work area was kept through the entire process. Our remodel took 3 weeks and it was well worth it. I can't say enough good things about Jacob and John's company. John visited several times to check out the work and chat a bit. I'm not sure when our next remodel is - but we will definitely be asking Jacob to come back - as well as referring Custom Tile to others. The finished product speaks for itself. He completely went above our expectations. I will add that there were small things we noticed a few weeks after - and Jacob was quick to respond to our questions. Jacob Varela is the Best of the Best. Aside from being a tile & stone setter extraordinaire, he has a work ethic that you just don't see anymore. Jacob is a 3rd generation tile contractor and his skills are evident. He has eons of knowledge crammed into his head, and he knows how to do everything the first time to perfection. Jacob starts early every day and is on time. The first thing he will do is damage control. He covers up the flooring and his work traffic pathways with VERY heavy paper and tape. And uses plastic to cut down on dust. At the end of every day - he cleans up, hoses down the street and plans what he will need material wise for the next day. When he starts the day - he works pretty much non stop. And he works smart. He knows his layouts, cuts, and does such a perfect job planning the install, from the location of his equipment, to demo, to pre planning the tile setting itself. He's a perfectionist who cares about doing the best job possible. And everything tile wise lines up and is balanced in the room. He did a couple bathroom floors, 3 stone walls, backsplash, new shower floors, new shower doors, set all new toilets, hooked up all our kitchen and bathroom sinks and garbage disposal. The job went like clockwork. I had the pleasure of meeting his brother - who helped with our stone walls, and his Uncle, who re routed some laundry plumbing for us...The Varela's are a terrific family with awesome construction skills and a work ethic that is old school. The price quoted was reasonable, we liked some of the suggestions given, and the fact that he uses tried-and-true methods for the areas exposed to water. In the master bath, he did the complete shower from the studs out, including the plumbing, mortar method on the floor and walls, framing a large niche, and the tile. He also did the tile for the floor and the wainscoting of the walls. It turned out really beautiful as can be seen in the accompanying pics. I don't even know what to say here, really. I described a fairly straight-forward job - a shower tile installation. At some point in the convo he said something about wanting to do all plumbing (drains, supply lines) himself, and complained that anything at all was already done (well known local hotmopper had already done the hotmopping). He said he'd come by the next evening to give me a quote. An hour or so before he was to arrive, he sent me a text saying he had too many projects right now, and was going to pass on the job. I hadn't even given him a timeline, so that struck me as weird. So I looked him up on California's contractor license and yeah, he has a C-54...which doesn't even cover plumbing, the thing he practically insisted on doing. Requested a bid to complete approx 800 sq ft of 8x48 porcelain tile. Jacob came to the house and we were immediately impressed with his straight forward and professional assessment and bid. The job required removing areas of carpeting and removal of existing ceramic tile. Jacob and his team worked a total of 5 days, starting promptly at 7:30. All I can say about this place... a big disappointment. After reading all the reviews, I thought of giving them a try. Wanted to get an estimate on remoldeling our shower. An appointment was made. On day of appointment...no call...no show. Wow. So much for that. In response to you, we were here "and" waiting on Sunday. As a matter of fact we had family here visiting and let them know before we went to the beach that you were coming over. No we never received a call, "you" may have forgotten "that happens sometimes". I remodeled my upstairs bathroom in June 2015. After reading the reviews on yelp, I could not believe my eyes when I read the review Sarah from Oceanside in 3/2015. I found the total opposite with this business. Both John and Jacob were professional, did not try to up sell me anything (we did discuss replacing the angle spouts and I agreed since they were 40 years old - gave me an average price). John was not moody but very pleasing to work with and patient when he explained several issues along the way so we could come to the best solution for certain things (placement of niche, height of shower head, the trim around the tub, how the tiles to be placed at the window, etc). Both John and Jacob never stalled on the job, arrived always on time, did a full day's work, and cleaned up afterwards. He allowed full drying time for thin set, grout and sealing of grout, while some tile setters actually do these jobs too quickly to get the job done faster and move onto the next job. John and Jacob did it the right way. My bath is spectacular thanks to the Varelas. In the past 6 months, I had a total nightmare with an unsavory contractor who did shoddy work, many times never showing up, did not do work to code, etc. It was to the point I was ready to sue them and report them to the Ca State License Board. Based on this experience, I was leery about starting another remodel - this time my bathroom, but decided to take a chance. Had a very good first impression with John V, owner. Received an in person estimate(a little higher than others) for a kitchen backsplash, and was going to hire his company. John requires a contract and agreement to cover his payments and work, which is fine. However, if you'd like to include dates that are agreeable to your work schedule, he's not flexible. His time for completing projects is based on his availability, which was in about a month at the time. You would need to be on his schedule, or he will charge additional fees (unless you leave your house key). I wanted to work around my work schedule when I am available, a beginning start date, but he couldn't give me a start date, just could put me in line. There are also fees for extra labor and materials.( We didn't see the color of grout he was going to use written in the contract- we don't know if there would be a fee if we changed color) Just read your contract, he seems to be an excellent tile installer. He didn't want to include our requests of agreed upon written start date, so we went with another experienced and great reviews Escondido contractor listed in Yelp. We had installation date set immediately, and fantastic, precise, and beautiful work completed within two weeks. No upfront fees, no additional fees. read more
