My review is for the massage services at Scruples. I was in the need for immediate relief of tension in my shoulders and neck, and had no luck getting a last minute appointment until I called Scruples. The deep tissue massage is pretty expensive here (more so than Swedish massage - most places charge the same), but the space upstairs was very nice - nice furniture with a homey feel. Mimi, my therapist was excellent. I've had many massages and often you feel like they're going through a routine, but Mimi really custom tailored our session to my specific needs. I could tell that she really wanted to make me feel better and feeling that intention is important. I've only been once so far, but intend to go back for myo-fascial work. I probably would've given it 5 stars but it was quite a bit more expensive. read more

We usually go for the massages and never seem to disappoint. Place is clean and the prices are reasonable. I would highly recommend, been going there for years read more

I was never a customer here, I only interviewed for a receptionist job-- but that's all I had to do to realize I would never want to be a client of Scruples. I went in professionally dressed (business suit) for my interview, and was essentially laughed at by the current receptionist and the salon owner-- and NOT out of earshot, I might add. I felt like I was in middle school as soon as I walked in the door and announced that I was here for my interview... they send me into the front room and began whispering, pointing and laughing. To this day, I have no idea what they found so amusing about me. I'm not obese, my fly wasn't down, there weren't boogers in my nose. Yet I was completely alienated. I will never set foot in this salon, nor recommend it to anyone. I hate to see what they say about their clients behind their backs. read more

Not a big fan. I'm a nice person and I also don't mind spending a little money when it comes to looking good, but I can deal without the attitudes. This place was snooty and pretentious from the start. The services are overpriced (likely so that they can afford to stay in the giant house that they are in). Atmosphere was strange and all of the employees seemed much more interested in talking amongst themselves, even thought it required shouting, than what they were doing with your hair, nails, etc... I don't know, this place is probably perfect for some people, but like I said, I can do without the overpriced attitude. read more

Had a spa day here with the bridal party of the wedding I am in. The estatitian was great she made my first bikini wax almost painless. But the girl who did my nails was not the best. I have done better on my own nails than she did. read more

I did all my wedding prep work at Scruples. My maid of honor (Jen) and I both got a lot of stuff done there, and we both had a great experience. We got manicures and pedicures, massages, and we had our hair and makeup done there for the wedding. I also had waxing done. Their prices were on the high side of the estimates I got for these services. I chose Scruples because they had everything in one place, they had all the days and times we wanted available, and Lisa (the scheduler) was nice. I am much more a tomboy than a fashionista, and Scruples was perfect for bridging the gap. The day of the wedding, I brought in McDonalds food and a bottle of wine, and it was a much better time than I anticipated. I think they had a lot of fun with my naiveté, and I'm happy that I was able to avoid the knowledge of what was actually happening. My favorite person to deal with was the girl who did my hair. I had highlights done, and she did a great job on my hair for the wedding. She was chatty and reassuring and fun to hang out with for the day. The lady that did my nails was nice. I didn't get fake nails; I just grew mine out and did a french manicure. They came out fine. They fixed Jen's nail the day of the wedding, because she just had to do dishes in the morning. Massages the day before were fantastic. I got a traditional swedish massage. Another bottle of wine and getting pampered just made the wedding a little less frantic. The lady that did the makeup was very cool. I really liked her jeep, too. The bumper stickers are funny. I thought I had a little too much makeup on, but that's just me, and I thought Jen looked great, too. I would not recommend the waxing. It was my first time doing it, and I just wasn't impressed. I pretty nearly did a full body waxing. I had to shave anyways during my whole honeymoon. I also had a severe skin reaction, and having that to worry about the day of the wedding kind of stunk. When I called, the girl who did the waxing kind of blew it off like it was nothing. I don't think I will ever get waxed anywhere, from anyone ever again anyways. Shaving is so much smoother. All in all, it was a little pricey, but it was worth it. They email me specials when they are running them. read more

I attempted to coordinate a spa party for 15 ladies for my Aunts Bachelorrette day and did not have a good experience. The owner required $200 in services per person and half payment up front. She even stated she'd make more money to open the spa to the public vs. work with me and the 14 other ladies we wanted to bring in. We brought our business down the street to Somers Day Spa and had a wonderful experience with no restrictions or requirements. They had a private room for us at no extra cost and were very accommodating in coordinating all 15 of us in our 2+ services each over a 4 hour span. Their prices were also better & now they have 15 of us to spread the word on how wonderful they are! read more

I found Scruples on Yelp while looking for a place to have an eyebrow wax and tint before my wedding. I found both the receptionist and esthetician friendly and helpful, but the actual service was a bit strange. I've had my eyebrows waxed in probably 30 different locations around the country, and this is the only place that did it while having me sit upright. This made me nervous, given the possibility of wax dripping on me or my clothes. The esthetician also didn't really wax my eyebrows - there was a lot of hair left afterwards that I had to pluck myself. She did a nice tint, however, and was very concerned that I felt that she got the color right. Not sure if I'll be returning. read more

I received a gift from my bestie after completing grad school and it was a one hour deep tissue massage with Joe. I've never had a massage from a man before so was a little apprehensive at first. The last month has been stressful to say the least and this gift came at the perfect time. I went upstairs to the spa area and it was so peaceful and quiet and was greeted by Joe who introduced himself and learned about me as I learned about him. We went into the room and he was beyond professional and listened to what I specifically wanted to focus on. He is so knowledgeable about deep tissue massage and made me feel comfortable the whole time. By the end of the hour my entire body felt relaxed and the stress I was carrying was virtually gone. I have already made another appointment to see him and I highly, highly recommend everyone to visit him. Trust me!! Thank you Joe for probably the best massage I've ever received. read more

I found this place when I was living just over the border in Massachusetts. I randomly got an appointment with Angela and now I won't go to anyone else. I moved to Boston in July 2013 and I still make a point to come home every couple months to get my hair cut. Angela and Crystal (the owner) are always accommodating with my schedule as I'm usually getting into town late on a weeknight. I'm pretty laid back with my long, uncolored hair, so I let Angela do whatever she thinks is best - but she knows not to take too much off or give me a style that requires much effort. The first time I went, I was shocked at the $20-something total - I expected it to be much more expensive for a shampoo, cut and blow-dry/style. I've never had anyone else there work on my hair so I can't speak to the complaints about attitudes that I see in other reviews, but I'm usually one of the last clients there in the evenings and whoever is still there has always been friendly. Sure, the facility is a little dated. But it's clean, and like any salon, the stylists are responsible for their own stations. Like I said, I've only ever gone to Angela and her station is pristine. I've never had spa services so I don't know what the upstairs looks like, but the downstairs just looks like a typical old New England house converted into a place of business. It's quite charming, actually. The first time I went, I accidentally went in the staff entrance on the side. I entered through their break room and they all looked at me like, WTF? But I can't have been the only person to do this. Now that I know where to go, it's nice to be offered a cup of coffee, water or tea while you wait. Update 12/2/14: We got about 6" of snow last Wednesday, and Scruples decided not to open. They called me on Tuesday to cancel the appointment I had booked for weeks. They asked me to come on Tuesday instead, but I explained I was coming from Boston and was only available Wednesday. It seemed really silly to cancel appointments a day ahead of time, especially given it's New England where A. snowfall predictions can be wrong and B. you should be able to handle driving/working in a few inches of snow. I only went here because of Angela and now that she's left and they canceled my appointment, I've decided to take my business elsewhere. read more

First I'll say that I'm thrilled that they take Spafinder gift cards. Second, if you're in need of a therapeutic massage, call this place and book with Erica. She is THE BEST. I've been to places all over CT for massages and she is, by far, the best massage therapist I've ever had. I now only book with her, for typically 75 or 90 minutes. Worth every penny. When I leave, I feel like she "fixed" me lol read more

I was visiting my mom in Enfield Ct. I usually have a deep tissue massage weekly back home in Los Angeles, I woke with my Back out and was able to make a last minute appointment at Scruples 6:30 pm that day, they brought her in that day for me which was very special. Dana the massage Theropist was great and got me straightened out and feeling much better. Way to go Scruples! read more

This place is cozy and the girls there are very friendly, however, the owner is an absolute snot! She thinks so highly of her place and talks to the customers like they are low life trash. I liked going here but hated having to consult with the owner as she is the secretary so she greets everyone and takes all the phone calls. Her attitude sucks and she literally laughs in your face. read more

5 Star all the way, great boutique with lots of cute styles, and the staff is top notch, Linda, Mom and sister are the best!!

My friends and I went to Scruples for a girls' spa day. Three of us got called in for our services on time while one was still waiting. I was getting my pedicure and could see the waiting room from where I was, and saw my friend waiting.. and waiting.. and waiting. I then moved to get my manicure and my friend came in the room to chat while she continued to wait. Over an hour later she hadn't gotten anything done. Over TWO HOURS later and she had only gotten the first part of her pedicure (no polish yet) while the rest of us were nearly done with our facials, nails, and massages. My friend is not a complainer but ended up declining the facial because there was just no time at that point. The manicurist was waaaaay too chatty, I wanted to relax and hang out with my friends but I felt forced into conversation with her instead. The manicure did not include any cuticle trimming and since she was talking more than paying attention to filing my nails, they are jagged and uneven. She glooped on the polish so thick and was confused when it was streaky.. All the while saying what a perfectionist she was. I do a better manicure on myself. We will definitely be taking our business elsewhere ($800 worth!) when we do this again. read more

Horrible customer service....used to go here years ago and loved it. Called recently to make an appointment and was grilled on who I used to see, why I haven't been there in a while, and at the end of the conversation was told I needed to give a deposit over the phone because they were afraid I might not show up. I found whomever answered the phone (and I think it was the owner) to be rude and overbearing and told her to forget it! Very bad business sense....sorry Lauren, you could have made a lot of money. read more

I absolutely love this place! I've been going to Scruples for about 7 years, and even if I moved I would come back again and again! I have had fantastic massages.... each massage therapist I've had has been wonderful. They are attentive to your needs and requests, and will check in during the session in regard to pressure, technique, etc. You will not get a bad massage at this place... if you're not happy, it's your own fault for not speaking up when asked. :) The esthetician, Brianna, is also fantastic! I truly have a hard time not falling asleep. I feel absolutely pampered during my facials. They offer some wonderful packages (my favorite being the Spa Experience For Her), and week-day specials (can't beat Terrific Tuesdays!) The owner, Crystal, is attentive and happy to work with you to create a package or experience that suits your needs/wants. The employees are professional, yet up-beat and have fantastic personalities. They truly value their customers. Their website here on Yelp is outdated. Correct one is scruplesdayspa.com read more

I have always been a great fan of Scruples, and have been going there for at least 7 years. The owner, Crystal, is so friendly, and her staff is as well. I always get my hair done by Heidi, who's been there for a while, I love her. Not only is she talented, she is personable as well. My husband and I have had couples massages there quite frequently, and all I can see, if anyone can relax my husband, they've done a great job! He was also pleased with Scruples and continues to ask me, when do you want to go back for another couples massage? We are thinking some time soon. Great job and kudos to all of your staff. read more

This was my first and last time visiting this place. I received a spa finder gift card and finally took the time out to use it at Scruples. When I called to make my appointment I told the person that I wanted a 30 minute deep tissue massage. She booked my appointment and asked me if I had a gift card to which I replied yes. I told the person who was doing my massage to specifically focus on my lower back pain but instead she massaged more of my shoulders. She told me it was her first time so I understand if she was nervous. What I don't understand was why the owner penciled me in for a whole hour instead of the 30 minutes as I originally requested over the phone. When I told her that I specifically wanted a 30 minute massage and that she made a mistake, she refused to acknowledge it. Instead she decided that she would prove that she was right by showing me her pencil filled note pad and then saying, "what are we going to do about this?" After she told me the balance remaining for this one hour massage she had the nerve to ask me if I was going to tip the person who did my massage? I told her no, paid the balance and left. I would NOT recommend going to this place for any massages. read more

Second appointment I made at this place because the first time I got a call and got cancelled ON because the person who did massages didnt have anyone to watch her kids... Now I went there only to see there are multiple people who do massages so why I could not be moved to someone elses chair is beyond me... I didnt ask for anyone specific and to be cancelled ON is about the most unprofessional thing... The receptionist is very rude, talks to you like you are stupid, I asked if it was possible to come in a little late because I was stuck in traffic and got an "uh no, there is someone after you, that is why I put you in for this time". an "im sorry that isnt possible there are other appointments today" would have been great... Im am aware there are other people just didnt know it was back to back and that was simply my question... Finally got in for my appointment and the woman was very nice and all but I felt as if the massage was not professional... I asked to have a specific area of pain targeted and I think she targeted just about every area BUT that one... I also got a mani/pedi and the woman again was very nice but honestly I could paint my nails better than that not worth the $$ they charge there... then on the way out the receptionist basically demanded I leave tips and looked at me crazy when I told her I would not be leaving any after all that for a whopping $150... I did not complain but I have taken my business elsewhere... very rude ! you do not ASK for tips... read more
